Battery Are Heating Up: Swan’s Banger, Messer’s Rescue & World Cup Group Chaos

Let's talk about quickly.

Let's talk about what we haven't been doing and what we have been doing.

I think both of you have spent most of our time allegedly working, but spending a lot of time allegedly watching a lot of matches with the World Cup.

But let's.

Before we get into that, let's talk about the battery and the upswing in their kind of form here lately.

Yeah.

Really consistent.

Honestly, I was.

We'll put it this way.

I was disappointed in the last game that we didn't score five because we had scored five goals previous two matches.

And I was like, all right, this is our thing.

We're just gonna score five, and we'll just make sure we don't let the other team score six.

Yeah, that's the way to do it.

Right?

We're still letting some goals through, but, man, we're getting some great, phenomenal performances from our front in our midfield.

Also, because it causes stepping it up.

As I saw a text from you, I said, that was a filthy goal.

That was from full Swan.

And that was an incredible strike.

I don't know where we keep that up.

We're gonna lose him for too long.

We're gonna snatch him up in a summer signing.

Yeah, Swan kind of incredible.

Like, I'm lucky he scored that goal.

I wasn't able to make the game.

Way too busy of a work day.

Not a World cup day, but way too busy of a work day.

I was excited to take Gunner.

It was the pups at the pitch.

It was looked like it was a lot of fun.

Oh, it kept showing.

All the dogs having fun.

And I was jealous.

Gunner got into it.

She.

When she sees a dog on the tv, she is up there, like, whining looking.

Where'd they go?

So I was like, yeah, I'm so sorry.

Like, I got home or I got off at 5 o'.

Clock.

I have a little bit of a hike now back home.

Yeah.

So not enough time to get down.

But I'm glad Colton scored that goal from his angle because that's the exact spot where I sit.

And seeing it live probably would have been more amazing.

But Watching it was just like wow.

Like we're.

We're so caught up in watching all this World cup and these superstars, global superstars playing and this incredible like prowess of Holland.

And you have Mbappes and you have these.

Who was it today?

It wasn't due.

It was Dembele.

Strike.

Yeah, yeah.

A very similar strike too.

Right?

Yeah.

And then just toss in Colton Swan because you have him on the edge of the box.

Turns around, two defenders, goalie sees it, can't get it.

Just world class strike.

Do you think Colton was on the pitch the other night that we would have taken out Turkey?

Yes.

He deserved a look.

I don't like our, our USA coach but that's just because he used to work for the other side.

But it seems to.

Russell Crowe seems to be doing a pretty good job.

Maybe he can do something with Colton.

Yeah, I think there's a few things from the Turkey game but I mainly Yep, we'll get.

I don't think we're going to see half those people playing ever again.

So what was the other good.

The other fun thing that we're passing around the goals too?

It's just not like Colton Zillow when scoring.

Yeah.

Honestly the, the first goal a causa like straight up.

I thought he had a clear shot, was going to have it and then just pass right across from Malik.

Didn't love his placement of the ball but when you hit it low and hit it hard and it goes in, it goes in.

Hey, you know it still counts, right?

So it looks like Colton's leading with seven goals and Malik's got five and Emilio I think's fallen up with with four.

Then we got two people back behind those two that are feeding them up and that's Nathan Messer and Jeremy Kelly.

Yeah, a little surprised by Kelly.

I thought his goal in this game was phenomenal.

Great touch, solid finish.

But I think we should rewind.

I it.

This game could have gone a different direction.

The first 10 minutes was all Loudon.

Two amazing shots, a great save and an incredible block off the line by Messer where the ball just falls to them.

And this is where it kind of.

I want to give the.

The flowers to Messer.

Dude, like you're getting up, you're scoring these goals, you're getting these crosses and assists in but you're on the line preventing the goals from going in.

And that's incredible to see.

We expected out of like a suber or Smith or Joey.

I mean but Mess.

Yeah, but Messer just.

He's going Both ways.

Yeah, he's, he's, you know, he's putting the assist in and they're on the goal line.

Yeah.

And he's no, he's no spry chicken.

Like we're not Talking about a 19, 20 year old kid here who just has endless energy.

Yeah, but he's French.

Yeah, they're ageless.

Terry Henry, just list a bunch of them, right?

Yeah.

But honestly, I think his performance really, you need a big moment like that.

So this huge block off a line and I think that was a quick turning point for the Battery.

And then from that point we were just all attack, all possession.

Even when we lost the ball, we quickly gained it back in the opposition's half, which speaks kudos to how we were set up from coach Fierman and kind of the game plan and who's going to fill these spots and kind of just be in the correct positioning.

So really well done on that end.

I mean, look at.

So we were going up and down in form.

Now the last two matches we played kind of bottom mid table team, so maybe we shouldn't take too much from it.

But we drew the Rowdies and we have beat them.

And then we put in five against Tulsa and they're.

They were upper mid table on the other conference and then we put in five against, I can't remember who the next team was.

And then four against loud.

So we're racking up the goals.

We need to stop the bleeding at the back now.

But that's always been a concern of ours.

The, the other team was Jacksonville and honestly, I get what you're saying.

These are games we should be scoring, we should be winning.

But how many seasons do we look at this and we go on a run of like up, down, up, down.

We're playing really low competition, like low level.

As in they haven't won a game but somehow they bring their best against us or the keeper plays out of his mind.

So kudos to the Battery for not slumping into that up and down roller coaster stretch, which we kind of become accustomed to.

Like it's unfair, but it's nice to see.

I like big wins, but I like consistent wins more than big wins.

It's nice to hit both ticks on that box though.

And in, in the past seasons we've really come out of the, you know, out of the blocks really on fire and have been consistent all seasons.

And towards the end we start dropping off in form and we had discussions about that last season, the season before.

It's like, is it better to Be at the top of the table all the way through the end and drop in form?

Or is it better to be building your form up and on the, on the upswing of it?

And the teams that have won the league have generally been kind of struggling and they start getting better and stronger and stronger, stronger.

And then the end they're knocking out, you know, Louisville and knocking us out.

So maybe this is our upswing in our form and getting us ready for the postseason in a couple months.

I will say we, we have hit really good form the past two years and then we slumped very late, as in switching a lot of players, not really trying new things out, but just going out with a somewhat strong lineup the past two years near the playoff push and just not looking great.

So I would prefer.

Or to not dip at all.

I think all of us would prefer that.

But let's say end of July, maybe get a loss or two losses and then start building that form back up into the playoffs, which is, I think any sports person, any league will tell you consistency is it.

And it doesn't matter if you have it early on and then you lose it.

If you get it when the time matters, that's all all people care about because that's what makes a winner and what makes a loser.

You just got to string together those last couple of matches.

That's the reason why I don't like the format of playoffs because it doesn't reward the team that's been consistent all season.

Necessarily true.

And we would see a completely different landscape in the championship of teams and how they approach it.

Signings, holding players, bringing players in.

It'd be completely different if that was the setup.

I agree.

I like that setup more.

I think the American fans were all just kind of used to this playoffs and, and I'm not just saying from soccer, but from all our sports.

We're just accustomed to it growing up no matter what.

So I don't think, honestly I don't think it's what we're going to see in the future where obviously not they're trying to switch that whole format.

But I don't think the, even the casual American fan cares about the playoffs if they.

You just tell them how it works and you go, hey, best team at the whole season, whoever's on top wins it.

I think they would be okay with that.

Yeah, it is interesting because last week, week before they were talking brought out was locked in or what he's talking about how he felt like Americans were soft in their sport leagues because they'd Lose a match when he's playing for Galaxy and nobody'd be upset.

And he was like, we should be upset.

And they're like, no, we just got to make the playoffs.

And I think that says volumes about, you know, maybe our competitive nature or lack thereof.

We just got to make it to the top eight and then work our way to the, to the end.

But.

Yeah, and it's a different setup too.

Like it's nice when you have these cup competitions where you don't have to win it but you just can't lose it.

So yeah, it gives you that sort of feel like we're used to right now and getting to see the World cup play out.

And I don't know, I love the competitions of you have your groups and then you go into knockout rounds.

But I realistically, I love seeing a team have to work for it all season and get rewarded for their work.

And I think as Battery fans you would agree because we finished number one so many times.

Yeah.

That we would, we would take all those first place finish trophies instead of just Eastern Conference finals or Eastern Conference champions.

So I want to go back and look at team of the week stuff.

Week 1415 you had Emilio Acasa making team of the week and he started out not as strong this season and then he's just been building and building and I think it's a lot of it's due to just they're now getting playing time together and so they're starting to connect.

Ben Pearman was the coach of the week and then the following week I think Miguel Berry's on it on the list.

Week 16.

So we're consistently now starting to get players on team of the week, which doesn't really mean anything but it just means that we're playing well and we're.

And we're distributing it out not just one player on it all the time, like where you got used to Aaron Malloy on there all the time.

But now it's nice to see Miguel Berry pop up.

See I cause a pop up.

See somebody else pop up there from week to week.

Yeah, it's nice to see and it's also your big name players on your team like your center striker.

He doesn't have to be on it every week, but you expect maybe every other week or every two weeks.

He has some really good games, scoring some goals and I think Barry's filing into that form right now.

He's really coming into it.

I think my difference maker for all the guys is Malik Foster.

Like big surprise out of nowhere Just kind of like exploded.

The speed is there, but like his positioning now and getting balls from Ikaza or just being able to play in different locations.

Yeah, I think that's such a difference maker for a team that relies on everybody now and not like that one focal guy.

We don't have our Nick Marcanic, we don't have our Aaron Malloy.

We don't have, you know, even MD Myers, like this big focal point up top.

So it's nice because we are sharing the ball.

Yeah.

But we're now getting these guys coming out and stepping up and the confidence is building and you can see it through everyone else on the team.

I mean, Joey had two strikes back to back.

That should have been goals.

Yeah.

And I, I don't think he scored all season and he's not a prolific scorer anyways.

He's getting paid to defend.

But those two strikes, it was just, you know, if the moon was a little lower on the horizon, I don't know that when it went off the post in a little different direction.

So do you think looking back at Tampa Bay because we were struggling, you think Tampa Bay was kind of our turning point on an upswing here?

Did it give us some confidence or did we just had confidence?

We just weren't getting the results we wanted?

I think it's just gelling.

Right.

Like you need.

It is a team that is a completely rebuilt team for the most part.

So it's just more time playing together and you go through something where it is a tough team to play.

It is.

I mean, I basically call it Battery 2.0.

They just took everyone.

So you kind of hold your own on that.

You build the confidence.

Like it's built up for the fans, it's built up for the coach, it's built up for the players.

You make it through that without losing a game.

Okay, that's off the board.

Let's move on to the next stuff.

Let's approach this next game.

There's not all this hype built up around it.

And I feel like they did a good job.

That's exactly how they approached it.

Let's move on.

Pierman got the guys to forget about it.

Hey, this is what we're going to do.

And they go out and light it up.

Now we're five goals.

Five goals, four goals.

I think something just is clicking now that.

Yeah, you go through a team that's very dominant with a lot of dominant players and big names that we're used to and you can come out with the draw.

I think we were better in that game, thought we should have won it.

But not losing it is a big deal.

So that means huge.

Yeah.

And it's.

It's a in conference team.

So if you're not stacking up losses in the east against these conference teams, that's great.

Like the west, whatever.

Who cares?

Like they're predominantly weaker than the East.

Like we have our big names that we worry about or like playing Detroit or Pittsburgh that always shows up against us or their keepers play out of their minds.

I'd much rather see us just not lose a game and get on to the next one and then reset.

Loud on the 24th.

Is it on July 4th?

I don't think so.

I'm looking at a different calendar.

Then July 11 is Charlotte and that's a USL cup match.

And then it's Sacramento and Colorado Springs.

So what do we.

What's a successful take out the cup match?

What's the.

How many points do we call July a success?

How many games are we having?

We have Indy, we have Sacramento, and we have Colorado Springs.

I think if you could take six that's successful, seven is above and beyond and nine is just completely absurd.

You're going to get some accolades for coach of the month players.

All that.

Yeah.

Because two of the three matches are away except for the.

That's excluding the cup match.

But the other two other three matches, they're away.

So if we can get six, that be fantastic.

Yeah.

And it's not too much, right?

Yeah.

For four.

Four games in a month.

That's not absurd.

Plus we're.

I mean, you gotta remember we're coming off of insane form right now, so.

Yeah.

Realistically, I want to see some clean sheets coming up.

I know it's not a big thing that we do in Charleston with certain keepers in that and I know we've harped on this a lot and how we'd like to see someone else in there, but I think our cup keeper is phenomenal.

I'd love to see him play in the league from time to time, but I feel like our run will be fine.

Offensively.

I don't care if we draw without scoring.

I don't want to give up goals.

Yeah.

So I noticed a couple weeks ago when we're leaking goals left and right, left and right, all of a sudden there was a big push on social media by the battery with Zamudio and he was like the primary kind of emphasis of a lot of posts coming out.

Do you think that was to gather support behind him?

I mean maybe, I mean maybe it's the guy who has the most free time.

It doesn't seem like he's training to get much better at saving goals.

The goals that go by him are in his face, in his hands or something.

That's so slow and anyone should be able to react to and he just doesn't react to it.

So I don't know.

I, I think he has a lot of free time on his hands.

Samudio, step it up, man.

Need some help back there at the back.

It, it doesn't matter as much when we're scoring five goals and four goals, but when we get closer matches we can't be drawn two two.

We need to be winning two one.

Yeah.

It also, it creates a whole identity of a team.

So like if you don't care that you're going to get scored on, well, hell, we're going to go out and buy all the best attackers.

Yeah.

And like our midfield is going to be more of an attack midfield and like whatever.

But that's not how we're set up.

We're a very defensive minded team.

We want to cover, we want to spread the ball around, keep possession and naturally you don't just lob the ball forward, sprint at people and leave yourself wide open.

So it's weird that we always get scored on with the style that we play.

Yeah.

And it, like I said, it's not like most of them are, you know, somebody breaking away, a counter attack or something like that.

It's like it's either in his face or something that we should have, he should have been able to defend better and stop those goals.

I do, I do like Messer going up forward but sometimes I think maybe it sets us up for that.

But we should be able to defend with three at the back easily.

We have three very prominent center back players.

Yeah.

Outside backs that come in as well.

Like we should be completely fine on that front and.

I want to say I'm very happy with Joey and very happy with Graham Smith.

They're doing a fantastic job.

Yeah.

I love these guys.

Yeah.

I just.

There's also the timidness, like how we watch it from game to game.

You can't backpedal the Whole time.

Like, especially when.

When the guys are outside the box.

Yeah, that's a good time to close the gap a little.

You don't have to go be in their face.

But 8 to 10 yard gap and you're still backpedaling is a lot of space for an attacker.

It absolutely is, especially a decent attacker.

So let's switch gears to.

What I've been engrossed with was this World cup thing going on.

I. I started out, I'm like, oh, it's a World Cup.

That's cool.

Because I haven't been necessarily a national team kind of soccer watcher, but I've just been engrossed.

Not.

Not the USA team necessarily, but just the whole spectacle of everything, all the way from the referees not calling.

Calling it differently than what we're used to, like in the Premier League and La Liga and everything else like that.

Just to all the fantastic stuff that's going on around it.

You know, I was trying to find a traffic cone so I could wear it on my head, you know, for part of this and stuff like that.

They're apparently all gone.

They're either in Boston or wherever they.

They relocate in the.

So what's your general thoughts on the World cup so far?

It's amazing.

I'm watching in English and I'm.

I stream everything, and I didn't want to purchase Fox or whatever.

And so I've been watching it on Peacock with Telemundo and it's been blast.

I can't understand a word they're saying.

I'm starting to understand cabeza, stuff like that.

But just.

Even my wife said, hey, why doesn't Fox have the little colored dot?

So I know which color each team is, you know, and who does.

Yes.

And Telemundo is showing all the way through the.

The hydration breaks and just.

It's a lot of fun.

The announcers are a lot more chatty as things get closer to scoring a goal.

You can definitely tell.

You can feel the.

The intensity of what's going on where.

I don't know if I have.

I tried to watch one In a place in.

In Somerville, and it was on Fox and it was just kind of dead.

But anyways, yeah, I don't remember.

I think it was.

Japan was playing and I watched them.

They scored this goal and we were watching on Fox and my wife's sitting there and I'm like, oh, my God, they started.

The celebration was happening.

Everything.

And I was like, oh, my God, we gotta switch over.

We gotta switch over.

I wanna.

I wanna hear it in Spanish.

I swear he's gonna keep yelling goal.

By the time we get over 10 seconds later, we get.

I get Peacock on.

We get it in Telemundo, and he's still going, oh.

Oh, he does it three times.

Does it three times.

I got in at the end where he had to retake his breath in to finish it off, and it superb.

But as far as World Cup, I mean, this is the greatest tournament ever.

A little different this year for me because being an Arsenal fan, I've been so engulfed in everything else and kind of taking a mental break.

From soccer.

Not watching every game, not watching every score, not kind of keeping up with the groups as much.

With the whole tournament, obviously, USA is a different story.

I have favorite teams, like, always, kind of like Portugal, France, for reasons tied to my local club, and then just kind of these underdog stories.

But I've moved away from kind of keeping tabs on them.

So realistically, just watching a lot of USA games, watching some big games.

So, like Netherlands, Japan, I thought would be an amazing game.

I think we have on Spain, Uruguay right now.

Yep.

Watched Sweden yesterday because I'm a big fan of, like, the closeout day of the group stage, where things matter and anything can happen and everyone plays at the same time in their group, so there is no conspiracy or alleged cheating or bribery happening.

It all has to happen at the same time.

So.

But I'm excited.

We're a couple days away from knockout games, which is the greatest thing on earth.

It's going to be.

You're going to be in a full kilt, walking around, getting cones off of signs.

So it's nice to have friends that are generous, let's put it that way.

It's fun to watch all the different teams and watching and, you know, and I. I've been looking a lot like the Lot of ar.

I'll tend to see if there's a game on that I might not want to watch.

And there's an Arsenal player that might be playing like an Ecuador in ca.

It's just been, you know, first couple match, I think he's kind of, you know, tired, but then he's turned it on and, and watching him against Germany and, and Cappy getting the yellow card and I think it's Kai Havers.

They have a meme him, you know, looking referee like trying to argue with over why'd you give him a yellow card.

And it was kind of like, you know, the Arsenal buddies are still Arsenal through and through, so.

And it was on the Arsenal side.

It's good to see Hincappe signed with us.

I didn't real.

I don't think I realized he was on loan.

I did know that.

I just didn't realize it until said we finally signed him for a couple years, so that's a good thing.

He.

I think he broke rights or infringements when he showed his butt on live tv.

So.

Yeah, Leverkusen had a part ways with that.

That's a good thing.

Spain's a little disappointing, I think a little bit that I expected more out of him.

France has been killing it.

And then you have a couple.

A couple of other squads that are all.

I mean, it's insane.

I'm sure everyone already knows this, but it's insane watching.

And it's like basically half of the World cup players were born in France.

Yeah, that's the way they do it.

They like to spread out the love.

Have a bottle of wine, some cheese, baguette and a couple players.

That's how it goes.

It's lovely.

They're a scary team.

They're so fast.

And the match today was just.

I thought, well, this is going to be a good match.

Norway and Norway sat, you know, the big two.

They didn't play today, but just watching rants in Mbappe and Bomble, whatever who and a couple other players.

It was just fantastic.

And of course Saliba at the back.

It's always fun to see.

And it strikes me because I see him in my mind, I see him in red and white and then I see him in a different color jersey and it shocks me and it scares me because I'm like, no, no, no, we need to make sure he comes back to Arsenal.

Especially with the rooster on.

Yeah, I know.

I'm very confused like that, so.

But the rooster isn't perched on top of a ball, so that's the only way I know it's true.

And it actually looks like a rooster, not a spur, whatever that thing is called.

Okay, so what else you want to talk about?

Where the season's going, kind of the standings as we get into a more natural standings position where we can kind of see the tops, the middle and kind of the bottom.

And what's really going to be the difference in some of these bigger matches especially.

I mean, the Battery have some huge ones at the end of the season.

We have Louisville for sure, which is at home.

Mm.

I'm anticipating that being the season decider for kind of positioning for us.

I want to proudly announce that.

That she has now used a term at work that she learned watching football with the rest of us, most notoriously Benny White.

And she used it apparently yesterday at work and all the other employees thought was fantastic.

It's called terms called shithousery.

And so I was.

I was so proud of her to carry that to the workplace where they don't necessarily watch soccer.

So I don't know what happened.

I don't know who the shithouser was.

I don't think it was her.

She's pretty, you know, straight laced and everything.

But I'm glad.

I feel like I've accomplished something.

But it's always great to have that to force your useless Knowledge and terminology onto your wife.

I can't tell you.

My wife's sitting there half this World cup tournament and I'm just like, oh, you used to play for Arsenal.

Oh, that was blah, blah.

She's like, who cares?

That's, that's when I turned my wife.

No, we have some fantastic wives that put up with our addiction here and, and I appreciate both of them immensely.

She sung the the Yorker as song the other day.

She's.

It's.

She now knows it from me singing it countless amount of hours.

But seeing him play with Sweden, I won't tell you any other comments that come out of her mouth about these teams, but that one was pretty funny to hear her just start the chant and I was like, oh, okay.

So.

And kudos to my boss.

He's a basketball guy.

He, he's now trying to learn football and so he every morning's a another teaching moment about football.

He was a little disappointed in the USA Turkey match, but pointed out, said, hey, we weren't playing our strongest 11 and because we already went on through so.

So there's people out there have several people that are high ranking and the place where I work that are not necessarily soccer fans, but the World cup is really bring it to them and they're really enjoying just the whole atmosphere all the way from watching matches all the way to, you know, fans and everything else, all the stuff that goes on with it.

I will say it is tough being an American with the World cup here and like dealing with work and work schedules because the USA are playing their knockout game on a Wednesday and I feel like that should be a national.

Any other team in the world would just if they're playing, they're not.

No one's working.

And I personally, it's selfish but like I think that's kind of crazy.

This is why the, the game of soccer or football in this country isn't ginormous.

It's because of shit like this.

Like, give the people off, go watch USA go bare minimum.

Be patriotic.

We can't cater to everyone's schedule and be like it's going to be only Saturdays and Sundays that they'll play.

That's not how this works.

Figure it out.

Give your employees the day off, give them the afternoon off bare minimum.

And support your damn country.

Or let at least let them do shots at work.

If you had to keep them there.

Out of office and they could be in office with the team.

So the, not the last USA match, but the match before.

Myself and Mario and Chad joined us we went to a place in Nexton and I was sadly disappointed by how many people were not there to watch the USA match and it seems like the people that were kind of gravitated towards the high top table were at but everybody else was just off doing their own thing and I just wanted to blast people for that so people need to get into it and the.

Battery are doing a very good job of putting out these posts for here's some USA watch parties my wife and I went over I think this was the Thursday game you're talking about Yep we went over to Holy City phenomenal packed out great time it's just every time I go there I forget how big it is so I'm just like trying to get a spot relative that's like but they had TVs everywhere around the place that I didn't know about so the game was all over Kind of thinking of going downtown to the share house location for the Wednesday game because it just seems like a good afternoon match yeah to catch it outside in some nice weather and just with a bunch of people so there's plenty of venues hosting it so definitely look up batteries posts and check it out.

Or check one of our one of our kind of a friend of ours the friend of mine coach's son in rec league a long time ago is he owns Proof on King they've been showing every match God bless him he's the Liverpool fan but I love him anyways but he's they're doing fun things down there different drinks and different drink special so yeah everybody's got there back to the Battery and I think Pierman's even doing stuff with the Post and Courier given his thoughts and predictions and stuff like that so it's cool to have the everybody integrated into the the fabric of the soccer world here in Charleston and on that I have nothing else to say sir all good to.
