Welcome to Cannon Crew, a weekly podcast discussing the Charleston Battery.
Speaker BYour host, Granite, will be joined by.
Speaker AOther defenders of the fleet from the black and yellow supporters section, and together they will help fortify and conquer.
Speaker AThey are the Cannon Crew.
Speaker BWelcome to the Canon crew.
Speaker BI am Granite and I'm joined by Ryan.
Speaker BWhat's up?
Speaker ADoing good?
Speaker BI'm doing all right.
Speaker BYou working?
Speaker BSitting at the desk at the soccer five, coordinating courts, fields, pitches,.
Speaker AA little bit.
Speaker APickup going on and having some nice.
Speaker BRyan do an outstanding job.
Speaker BThank you.
Speaker BAppreciate it.
Speaker BWe'll talk again Monday.
Speaker BPatrick, you are sitting next to a shuttle simulator, are you not?
Speaker CYeah, you could say that.
Speaker BThe Artemis 7 is being simulated on your shuttle simulator.
Speaker CNo, no.
Speaker CIt's too woke for the people.
Speaker CThey.
Speaker CYou can't tell them that it's all fake, that all the astronauts are actually actors that have appeared in movies.
Speaker BWhere'd they go, the actors?
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker CI think they made it big time in Hollywood.
Speaker BYou would have or they would have.
Speaker CYes.
Speaker BI. I'm trying to fill some time with banter because we're going to get the.
Speaker BIt's like ripping a band aid off.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BBut we won't talk about till later.
Speaker CI think it's more.
Speaker CIt's more like sunburn.
Speaker BSunburn.
Speaker CYou have to take a shower.
Speaker CYou just don't want to do it.
Speaker BOh, excellent.
Speaker AOh, my gosh.
Speaker ARight?
Speaker AYou know, it's going to feel better, but you know it's going to absolutely hurt.
Speaker CYou didn't do it right away when it wouldn't hurt.
Speaker CYou kind of wait until later or the next morning and you're like, I kind of got to do it.
Speaker CI don't want.
Speaker CI.
Speaker CHow long can I make this last?
Speaker CYou smell the pits.
Speaker CI can't make it.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CThat much longer.
Speaker BYou drink?
Speaker BDrink a little.
Speaker BDrinks.
Speaker BIt doesn't seem to help.
Speaker BWell, let's talk about a good note.
Speaker BLet's talk about good notes.
Speaker BThe beautiful get.
Speaker ADoes that seem to.
Speaker ADoes that seem to happen, like, across multiple days, though, when you're on the road and you're traveling and you're on extended road trips, Right.
Speaker AYou get, you know, need a shower, you need to change it up.
Speaker AHard to stay.
Speaker AStay with the flow, Stay up with consistency.
Speaker BNo, I don't have that problem.
Speaker CI've always been curious about the gas station showers.
Speaker CWant to just put my name in, get a number?
Speaker BI think we should do that.
Speaker BWe'll do a podcast for them outside the truck stop showers.
Speaker CWe got to figure it out.
Speaker CWhat.
Speaker CWhat's going on back there.
Speaker CI don't know.
Speaker CLet the people know.
Speaker BYeah, let's see if our back four can shower and.
Speaker BAnd try to get us somewhere else besides where we are.
Speaker BLet's talk about the beautiful game real quick.
Speaker BJust got off of the pitch.
Speaker BReferee in a couple matches.
Speaker BCity of Charleston Rec League West Ashley, Bunch of kids out there as always.
Speaker BAnd first match, you 12 girls.
Speaker BIt's always fun, you know, it's slow paced.
Speaker BI have to force myself to run a lot, just kind of get a workout.
Speaker BAnd one team showed up and they're one player short.
Speaker BSo they're playing 7v8 and then they're losing 3 1.
Speaker BHalftime.
Speaker BAbout 10 minutes through the first or second half, their keeper gets hurt.
Speaker BShe's gotta go off.
Speaker BSo we're playing two players down and they were just dejected.
Speaker BYou could see em.
Speaker BThe other team scored a goal.
Speaker BThat's when the player, the keeper went off and they were just like looking at me, their heads down.
Speaker BI said, girls, I said, just have fun.
Speaker BJust go out there and enjoy the game.
Speaker BDon't worry about it.
Speaker BDefend well and just do what you normally do.
Speaker BAnd within five minutes, they scored a goal and their eyes just lit up.
Speaker BAnd they still lost 3, 2.
Speaker BBut they defended like beast and everything else.
Speaker BAnd I was like, this is the reason why this is called a beautiful game, because those young players went out there and just had a blast.
Speaker BKudos to the young ladies that went out there.
Speaker BThey still lost, but they had smiles on their faces when the match was done.
Speaker AThey're going to remember that game.
Speaker AMatt Wallace is going to feel so much different to them than just a loss, Will.
Speaker BThey fought.
Speaker BThey didn't give up.
Speaker BAnother goal and they ended up scoring that goal.
Speaker BAnd it was.
Speaker BThey just played very well.
Speaker BSo they.
Speaker BI felt like they won.
Speaker BThey felt like they won.
Speaker BThat's all that matters.
Speaker BOkay, Any other comments on the beautiful game?
Speaker AWhat a full circle moment.
Speaker BA full circle moment.
Speaker BWhat.
Speaker BWhat about losers?
Speaker ANo.
Speaker BWhat about winners?
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AOne.
Speaker AKnoxville knocking off D.C. united in the U.S. open.
Speaker AAnd their head coach happens to be a former Battery player.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AAnd not only is he a former Battery player, but he is a former Battery player who also scored against D.C. united back in 2008.
Speaker BIs there a conspiracy going on here?
Speaker AWell, conspiracy there going over here.
Speaker BOh, Ryan has left us to go do something.
Speaker CHe's checking on it.
Speaker CHe's seeing it still alive.
Speaker CIs.
Speaker CIs it real?
Speaker BApparently I'm the only one with two more than one screen.
Speaker BAnd Ryan's screen is reduced to five and a half inches.
Speaker BPatrick, do you have any good feel good stuff before we start turning on the water?
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CI think as soccer fans we were treated to a really fun week.
Speaker CWhether you have a team in the race or not.
Speaker CChampions League, man.
Speaker CQuarterfinals are big.
Speaker CSecond, second leg of it.
Speaker CSo the Real Madrid Bayern game, incredible.
Speaker CI wasn't watching that one.
Speaker CWe all know.
Speaker CJust like granite.
Speaker CI'm an Arsenal supporter, so I was watching a miserable game where nothing happened.
Speaker COh my.
Speaker CIt was tough to watch, but tough anyways getting to kind of watch those highlights.
Speaker CThat Bayern Real Madrid game, phenomenal.
Speaker AYou know, only watch the highlights.
Speaker COh, man.
Speaker AY' all miss a great game.
Speaker AOh, just the.
Speaker AEverything in between the highlights was just.
Speaker BI'm.
Speaker AIt's what you.
Speaker AIt's what you sign for.
Speaker AAnd now you're getting Byron versus psg.
Speaker BAnd I'm like, well, it's, it's.
Speaker BIt's the.
Speaker BI have problems with the Harry Bane or whatever his name is.
Speaker BThat's just thing of mine.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AHarry Payne.
Speaker BWho is it?
Speaker AHarry?
Speaker APain in my veins.
Speaker BWell, anyways, yeah, that was a kind of a high flying, high scoring match and so we had to bounce it out with our stomp Sporting.
Speaker ASo know that means right too the acronym hpv.
Speaker BSay that again, sir.
Speaker ANot hairy.
Speaker APain in the vein.
Speaker AHpv.
Speaker AThat's a. I'm not even joking with you.
Speaker AI didn't.
Speaker AI didn't make it up.
Speaker AIt's literal chant that they.
Speaker AI take.
Speaker BIsn't there.
Speaker BIsn't there a.
Speaker AThat was vaccine.
Speaker ANo, that was when she was with Hol.
Speaker ABack with Hull, with.
Speaker AWith Jamie Varty.
Speaker BJamie Var is a beast.
Speaker BI hate Jamie Varty when he plays against us, but he is a beast.
Speaker CHe is like old school loyal if anything.
Speaker BRight?
Speaker BYes.
Speaker BEvery time we.
Speaker BI loved it when I watched him play other teams.
Speaker BI hate it when he.
Speaker BWhen he played against Arsenal because I was like, oh,.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker CI mean besides the Real Madrid Bayern just.
Speaker CAtletico beating Barca, actually losing, but going through.
Speaker CBut some really good games this week at high level, which is fun.
Speaker CAnd us as Arsenal fans have a big game this weekend, but Premier League's winding down, most of the international leagues are winding down.
Speaker CSo we're getting down to nitty gritty time in the football world for the rest of the world and starting to ramp up in the championship with kind of get off the pot like we're starting to get into.
Speaker CAre these the guys we want to stick with?
Speaker CAre we going to make some changes?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CHow's our form doing?
Speaker CWho's going to be our next starter.
Speaker CSo interesting contrast of the rest of the world is kind of winding down getting ready for World cup and we're kind of winding up trying to find our feet, get into a groove and see who's going to stick around as a starter and might be making changes soon.
Speaker ASo now do you think that impact is going to have though on the league with some of the players getting.
Speaker BCalled out for international play?
Speaker AFor international play.
Speaker CI.
Speaker ADo you think it really affects the usl?
Speaker CNot so much, but kind of how the talk has gone recently with MLS trying to I guess stay relevant in an MLS way of saying they want to switch to the rest of the European league schedule eventually but without declaring a time or facts and how they're going to do it.
Speaker CBut just saying we may go ahead and switch to that schedule because it just makes sense for world football.
Speaker CI think it's too little too late of that NFL mindset of where the dominant force in the US kind of like their last graphs at it.
Speaker CI don't think it really.
Speaker CThe World cup stuff, I don't really think affects USL championship.
Speaker CI mean you're going to have those off teams if they qualify.
Speaker CMaybe one guy, two guys in total that are really going to join a camp.
Speaker CBut everyone else, not really.
Speaker CI mean we're more on the under 20s, under 23s, kind of those guys going off and playing international and getting a little better competition because you're playing against European players who are on maybe reserves or a two team over in Europe.
Speaker CSo I think that's.
Speaker CThat's more of something we should look out for.
Speaker CAre like a Colton Swan.
Speaker CIs he going to be.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CContinuing on this road to play international duty for the under 23s, under 21s and not abandon the club but like grow his game but not really stick around when maybe we need him in some key.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CVery key moments.
Speaker CExactly.
Speaker BAnd where's his head at too?
Speaker BYou know, because that age and what you're looking at here, his head's probably going to be focused a little more on national team than.
Speaker BThan battery sometimes.
Speaker BWhich, I mean, I get it.
Speaker BMy brain would be there too.
Speaker CYeah, for sure.
Speaker CBut you got to remember who.
Speaker CWho signed you first.
Speaker CYou know, you're getting this opportunity because you're a club.
Speaker CMore chances than not you're not getting it just because your parents knew and paid for you to go play us under 17 team.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CI mean, unless your name's Geo Reyna, it's not happening so.
Speaker BWell, it's almost time to turn on the water.
Speaker BI think,.
Speaker CI think we should dive into it because.
Speaker BHere we go.
Speaker CWe.
Speaker CWe have something else that we can look forward to.
Speaker CWhat's that?
Speaker BWhat can we look forward to?
Speaker CJust a game at home finally.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker CWe're having a prolonged like absence again.
Speaker CWe're not, we're not gonna have a home game for a few weeks.
Speaker CLike my wife just.
Speaker CWe're trying to plan some random thing and she's like, can you pull up the battery schedule?
Speaker CKeep up Arsenal schedule.
Speaker CI'll make sure the date.
Speaker CAnd I was going through May and.
Speaker BI was like nothing.
Speaker CAway game.
Speaker CAway game away.
Speaker CYeah, I guess we're clear.
Speaker BWell, let's talk about a game that shouldn't have been the way it was.
Speaker BI don't know what, I don't know what to say about it.
Speaker BKind of our job is to score goals and stop the other team from scoring goals.
Speaker BAnd it seemed like neither of that, Neither one of those things happened.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CFor lucky for the listeners, they didn't hear the pod that will never be released of us talking about our next three games.
Speaker CWhat do we think's gonna happen?
Speaker CDraw at Louisville would be fantastic.
Speaker CIf we win the game Brooklyn, that should be a freaking easy, easy peasy easy.
Speaker CAnd then get ready for Tampa.
Speaker CYeah, that's going to be a big one at home.
Speaker BSo we went this really high apex, you know, penultimate thing in Louisville and like hell yeah.
Speaker BThen smack down to the low part of the valley to prepare ourselves for Tampa Bay.
Speaker CWe get.
Speaker CWe can prolong it a little bit.
Speaker CWhat a God awful camera angle to have to watch a game.
Speaker CI mean you might as well just put it on the ground.
Speaker CI don't care.
Speaker CSomeone just put your phone on the ground.
Speaker CThey're just broadcasted from here.
Speaker CYou can't see anything.
Speaker CYou can't see runs, you can't see space.
Speaker CIt's just.
Speaker CI mean you're watching a U9 kids game.
Speaker CNo, that was the point.
Speaker BThey have better cameras.
Speaker CThey have roller coasters behind.
Speaker CGo.
Speaker CSomeone go sit on top of that roller coaster.
Speaker CAs freaking highlighter vest as maintenance and just broadcast the game.
Speaker BAt one point even announcer says, we don't know if that's a corner throwing because we can't see that part of the pitch.
Speaker BI, you know, that's fantastic.
Speaker BWell, you know, turf.
Speaker BI don't like turf anyways.
Speaker BI don't know if that affects us.
Speaker BWe've had this discussion before, but it just.
Speaker BIt's a baseball field that they hamstrung into.
Speaker BPut a soccer pitch on.
Speaker BI don't I don't know how we're letting teams into the USL at this level on a baseball field anymore.
Speaker CI, I don't know how we lose to a team that.
Speaker CAnd they even.
Speaker CThey have one, maybe a win.
Speaker CYeah, I mean they're, they're not good.
Speaker BNo, they're not good at all.
Speaker CEven you watch their goals.
Speaker CThey're just kind of.
Speaker CI don't know, it.
Speaker CIt's like the, you have a coach growing up who says just take chances, you'll.
Speaker CYou'll get lucky.
Speaker CEvery now and then it's like they went off that mentality of just shoot it and maybe it'll go in and we have a guy standing between the freaking post who has no idea what's happening.
Speaker CI think he's looking at the roller coasters too.
Speaker BI think so.
Speaker BFirst goal and I, and I watched it and then I watched it again and was kind of whatsapping to y', all just briefly saying, oh my goodness.
Speaker BHe said all three of them were like that.
Speaker CYeah, it's like he's looking as if he's so obstructed.
Speaker CCan't see it.
Speaker CThey somehow have a camera angle behind and you're like, no, you saw it, you saw it, you watched it.
Speaker CWe could see your head move and you just didn't react.
Speaker CLike, I thought we turned a leaf with this guy.
Speaker CI thought he was starting to build some momentum.
Speaker CHe had some really two back to back games that were good on his part.
Speaker CMaybe not good overall, but good on his part.
Speaker CI didn't think we would have to go back to what the hell is this guy doing on a professional team?
Speaker BOh, it just.
Speaker BHe needs.
Speaker BWe.
Speaker BWe have one clean sheet and I don't think that's up to him.
Speaker BHe did some Mickey Mouse hands at that match to kind of save a couple shots that coming at the goal.
Speaker BThat was it.
Speaker BAnd everything else, I mean, is going in the back of the net.
Speaker CIt's just, it's just poor.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CLike you have to at least dive or you have to react.
Speaker CAnd it's not like someone hits a worldy from outside the box and he curls it around a wall of defenders and you're kind of diving at it and you just, you just can't get to it.
Speaker CThese are chances you're seeing the play, you can see the ball.
Speaker CYou don't react and then you throw your hands up like, oh, you guys were in front of me.
Speaker CYeah, they're in front of you.
Speaker CYou can move too.
Speaker CLike, you can move a little bit in Shift like it's not on every defender.
Speaker CIf they did that, then they would.
Speaker CEvery attacker would just dribble to goal if the defense just moved out of the way.
Speaker BWe don't, we don't want those because he's not been very good at those things either.
Speaker BSo Brooklyn is played six matches.
Speaker BThey're two and four, four losses.
Speaker BAnd of course one of the two match or wins were against us.
Speaker BGold difference negative.
Speaker BNegative four.
Speaker CHere, here's one stat.
Speaker CSo this is a big stats lie game.
Speaker CWhen you get scored on in the 9th minute, a team who isn't as good as the battery is going to resort to maybe a little more defensive, a little more counter, go for that break when they need to.
Speaker CSo you'll look and you'll see a lopsided possession.
Speaker CYou'll see a lopsided total shots.
Speaker CWell, maybe not total shots, but big chances, passes.
Speaker CEverything that has to do with kind of controlling the ball.
Speaker CThat's all a lie.
Speaker CWhen you get scored on in nine minutes, the game has shifted at that point.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CTeam can sit on their heels and kind of lock you down defensively.
Speaker CAnd when they get a second goal in the first half, all bets are off.
Speaker CThey don't even want to touch it.
Speaker CGo ahead, attack us.
Speaker CIt's on you now to bring the game to us.
Speaker CWe don't have to bring the game to you any longer.
Speaker CWe don't have to be opened up.
Speaker CWe don't have to give you chances, but you are going to be opened up.
Speaker CAnd that was the case where we saw a third goal.
Speaker CAgain, like, it's just football.
Speaker CThis is what happens.
Speaker CAnd the stats will lie in this game more than any game that we will see throughout the season.
Speaker BYeah, because I'm looking at ball possession.
Speaker BWe had 71%.
Speaker BThey had 29 total shots.
Speaker BWe had 13.
Speaker BThey had 11 shots on target.
Speaker BWe had four.
Speaker BThey had seven.
Speaker BI had two big chances.
Speaker BThey had one.
Speaker AWe just got to go back to shooting practice.
Speaker BI.
Speaker BAccurate passes.
Speaker BAm I looking at the right thing here?
Speaker BBecause this is just nuts.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BSo after passes, they were at 58% with 127.
Speaker BWe were at 82% with 457.
Speaker ATriple.
Speaker BIt's just crazy.
Speaker BIs this just a fluke match or is it time to make a change?
Speaker ACompleted that 400 and something bit of battery that was completed passes.
Speaker CIt's time to bring a different goalie in.
Speaker CLike I don't want to see like the, the our third string guy or whatever who played in the US Open play him.
Speaker BHe's a monster is Christian Garner still.
Speaker CThis, this is where guys get their chances and they thrive and maybe make a name for themselves.
Speaker AYeah, this, this is the point where I'm putting my hand to my head and I'm like, where's Kuza?
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker ABecause we know we didn't see him.
Speaker AWe haven't seen him yet this season.
Speaker AHe's supposed to be back.
Speaker AFrom what I've been hearing in the off season is that he was expected to give Zoo a real contention to for that starting role.
Speaker AI was asking for him that we would most likely see him after the fourth week.
Speaker AWe are well into that point now where we're now asking after week five.
Speaker AWe completed week six, right?
Speaker BYep.
Speaker AWeek six.
Speaker AWe just played week six and we're literally asking for it now as a fan base, like, I know I wasn't saying it was going to be this bad.
Speaker AAnd are we really this bad, right?
Speaker ANo, no, no.
Speaker AWe're really not.
Speaker AWe can still bounce back and everything, but why not allow for there to be change?
Speaker ABecause we know what the end story is down.
Speaker BWe've changed everything else.
Speaker BRight?
Speaker AYou gotta change.
Speaker AAnd if you're changing everything else, why are you holding back and changing this position?
Speaker ABecause you weren't last year.
Speaker BI don't.
Speaker AOr the year before.
Speaker CI don't know.
Speaker CIt's kind of just hitting me right now.
Speaker CAre we focusing on the wrong thing?
Speaker CDo we make.
Speaker CDid we let too many good players go at this moment now?
Speaker ANo, no.
Speaker CYou're saying it defensively.
Speaker CI can hear it in your voice.
Speaker BNo, no, of course not.
Speaker BWe wouldn't do that.
Speaker CBut like, I, I agree with the whole, like.
Speaker CWhereas, because this might be my biggest knock on this league is you don't get updates.
Speaker CThere is no transparency on, like, yeah, I picked up a knot, a slight injury.
Speaker CWe're kind of weaning them back or.
Speaker CIt doesn't have to be even that transparent, but it should say, like, pick something up in training or like, is injured, he's out because he's injured.
Speaker BLike, tell us what the hell's going.
Speaker COn in the dark for every player, every season.
Speaker CAnd unless you physically are at the training facility seeing a guy kind of like gingerly train one on one with a coach on the practice field, you're not going to get any information.
Speaker ANo, absolutely.
Speaker AAnd I feel like it's.
Speaker AI feel like it's ridiculous for.
Speaker AAnd again, this isn't just for us.
Speaker AIt's for teams in the entire league where I've looked at their Other team apps, they have injury reports where it's a whole tab where they have like a match day.
Speaker AThey have like their lineup and everything.
Speaker AThis is injury report.
Speaker AGuess what's never filled out for every team?
Speaker AThe injury report.
Speaker ANobody fills out that tab.
Speaker AThey will always put their team lineup, their formation, who scores, the assists, the cards, everything.
Speaker ABut they'll never fill in an injury board.
Speaker ASo we never know who we're going to see who's got the pickup.
Speaker ALike, like Laurent for example.
Speaker ALike I was asking for him to start.
Speaker AHe finally got his start against Louisville and finally made an impact and scored right away like he should have.
Speaker AIt was beautiful.
Speaker ABut before he was, he was coming off of a hamstring injury but we didn't know that and it was like kind of like his fans.
Speaker ALike I was kind of like frustrated a little bit for not seeing him, but then I got to speak with him and he's like, yeah man, I'm coming back with a little hamstring.
Speaker AAnd I'm like, wow.
Speaker BSo on CO wasn't even on the bench.
Speaker BWe have Burner on the bench, right?
Speaker ASo no CO is on the bench.
Speaker AGarner's the Garner's retired.
Speaker BI said CO is not on the bench.
Speaker BHe wasn't on the bench.
Speaker BI'm looking at, at, at the stat substitutes, all the ones that checked in and then left on the bench was Jo, John Burner, Joey and Cruz Hill who like Joey did play.
Speaker BBut I don't, I don't see where we had CO sitting on the bench.
Speaker CAnd we do, we don't need to know that he hell Joe, don't tell it, don't tell us that preseason he's competing for the job and he's going to really push for it.
Speaker CAnd then five, six weeks in, we, we're not sniffing anything U.S. open cup games.
Speaker CHe's not getting minute like yeah,.
Speaker BI.
Speaker CDon't know if it's another injury.
Speaker CI mean that's a player decision that's the toughest to go through.
Speaker CYou have to sit there and wonder is this worth it again?
Speaker CBecause these are your years where you should progress and maybe have that opportunity to succeed and move up.
Speaker BWell, we need, we need to stop goals and Kuz isn't doing it so might as well.
Speaker BI mean if we're going to lose 3 nil, why not lose it?
Speaker BBecause John, we took a Chance on a 35 year old John Burner.
Speaker BYou know, put him in there.
Speaker AWe signed the Academy kid, throw him in there.
Speaker AHe's 62 East Charles in Born and Bred.
Speaker AHe probably put more of a fight right now.
Speaker CThrow Subar in.
Speaker CHe's not even playing defense.
Speaker CPut his ass with gloves on in the middle of the net.
Speaker BSomebody love you, love you Zamudio.
Speaker BBut man, you gotta, you gotta do better.
Speaker CAnd this is Ryan.
Speaker CWhat, what do you say to these goals?
Speaker CBecause this is a tough look for goals scored against you as a keeper.
Speaker AThis definitely is.
Speaker AWhat was.
Speaker BThat.
Speaker BFor our viewing public.
Speaker BRyan is actually working right now so he has to go out and supervise a little bit.
Speaker BSo in the meantime what we'll talk about is who's the academy guy he's talking about.
Speaker BLet's talk about Jack Wayne real quick.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker CTalking about him.
Speaker BHe.
Speaker BHe came out for a played a little bit.
Speaker BWas it.
Speaker BHow old is he?
Speaker BYoung man, age 17.
Speaker BHe came out there and I and just watched him last, you know, couple minutes.
Speaker BI was like he's not doing that bad for a 17 year old out there doing better than some of our not 17 year olds.
Speaker C10 Touches on the ball in six minutes, which is more than a lot of youngsters would get.
Speaker CI don't know.
Speaker CI like again we've had these conversations.
Speaker CI think these are players where early games, mid season games, you can kind of experiment, give them some minutes at the end of the game and see where they go.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CSee if they maybe can hold up to the pressure.
Speaker CI don't know.
Speaker CIt's a good, it's a good analyst of.
Speaker CDoes the guy have the mental strength or does he have the kind of whereabouts.
Speaker CNot, not necessarily all the physical stuff.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CLike you can kind of see if, if a player young enough has the mental fortitude to continue in this league and maybe step up and train and like get to that next level.
Speaker BNow I, I like that we put them in, we're losing three now and we put them in there and I don't think it was changed the game state.
Speaker BI don't think it was anything other than hey, go in there, get some, get some time in the, in the trenches.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BWhich I think it was a brilliant move by.
Speaker BAnd hopefully pay off dividends at the end of the year by coach Pierman.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker BRyan, question do.
Speaker AOkay, got one.
Speaker AI got.
Speaker AI actually got a good take.
Speaker ADo you think we actually utilize mid season transfer target?
Speaker BI don't think so.
Speaker BI mean maybe for a keeper.
Speaker BThat's it.
Speaker AI talked about.
Speaker AThat was my next question.
Speaker AEven for a keeper because I see, I see us still going and grabbing, if not a winger grabbing another forward on loan or something and then still going after, like, if we do not go after a keeper this entire window and we end the season with our keeping core, how it is now, how far do you expect us to go?
Speaker BWell, we talked about last year, about clean sheets and how it's been.
Speaker BIt was difficult and we talked about all season long and it was a difficulty for us.
Speaker BAnd we're starting out the season with one clean sheet and we're not scoring a bunch of goals.
Speaker BAnd so best way to win matches is to have more goals scored against, you know, the other team.
Speaker AWhen you tell, when you do sell your number, the guys scored the most goals and the guys scored the second most goals or the third most goals in the league, I, yeah, I, I,.
Speaker BI think that, that the people we have are more than capable of doing scoring more goals than they did.
Speaker BBut it's hard to do that when you're picking the ball on your own net.
Speaker BYou know, I think it, it changes the game state, it changes the way you approach your attacks.
Speaker BYou know, just how players react to everything because all of a sudden you're getting anxious and you're rushing things where you might not necessarily rush it and, and not taking chances or taking too big of chances.
Speaker BAnd so it's not what you're trained to do, it's not what you practice to do, and so it just throws you all the way off.
Speaker AWell, like, I just don't, I don't believe that this lineup either was our best lineup.
Speaker ALike, yes, it wasn't our best lineup to where you just came off playing Louisville and you can rotate guys because of you're on the back end of a road trip, but for who, for who was played in the positions and stuff.
Speaker AIt's kind of like some of the guys definitely had the numbers, the minutes tolling on them on the long road trip, but then like, you could have revitalized some other areas of the pitch in other positions, and you just didn't see that.
Speaker ASo it kind of left like question marks of again, like, are injuries looming on these road trips?
Speaker AAre there, you know, just not carrying as many people on these trips or, you know, what is it, you know, I kind of like to know.
Speaker ASo, like, that way, you know, that's easier transition into what fans understand about this league, and not only what they understand, but also what they're willing to kind of buy in for the team because who's, who's for a lot of the stuff when the fans are giving back, the fans are trying to, you know, continue to purchase jerseys, food, the stadium tickets, the Constant supporting of the fans or supporting of the teams.
Speaker AThey want to continue to be there, be there for those players.
Speaker AIf they don't know, it's kind of hard to continue to build that connection.
Speaker ABecause you go to a game, you see a guy, the next game, he's not there, you think he doesn't play there anymore.
Speaker BYeah, and we've seen that last year.
Speaker AYou know what I'm saying?
Speaker AYou see that quite a bit.
Speaker AAnd it leaves you questions like next two, three, four games, you don't go to a game for a month.
Speaker ABut the guy's been back for a week already.
Speaker AYou just don't know.
Speaker BSo what do we do?
Speaker BWe talk about keeper change.
Speaker BIs there any other change that we need to do?
Speaker BI'm a big fan of Kelly and Kelly played an excellent match.
Speaker AI played a fantastic game.
Speaker AI gave him some.
Speaker AI gave him some little beef the other probably about two podcasts ago.
Speaker CKelly,.
Speaker AI see why we kept you.
Speaker AI do, I do see.
Speaker AI do see it.
Speaker AI do.
Speaker CI think, I think this is the coach's curse, right?
Speaker CYou're damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Speaker CWe can sit here and say, personally, I wish Landry would have started.
Speaker CMaybe that would have been a little more energy.
Speaker CCentrally, Kaza didn't look great.
Speaker CMaybe you playing Landry, he just is a bigger guy, a little more physical, kind of.
Speaker CI don't know.
Speaker CI mean, we can sit here and say that, but you have guys in training.
Speaker CWe don't get to see training all week.
Speaker CYou don't see how guys are performing.
Speaker CPersonally, I think from a battery standpoint, Barry needs to find the mark.
Speaker CBarry needs to start getting on a roll and maybe not just scoring goals, but like looking more dominant up top.
Speaker CLike you're a, a pretty well known name who came from the MLS.
Speaker CYou're not 40 years old, you're still in your 20s.
Speaker CYou should be putting in better performances.
Speaker CYou should create a little more or start gelling a little more with these guys who are supposed to be your creators.
Speaker BI think that's what it is because his energy is there and his movement I think is there, is just.
Speaker BWe're just not connecting from that midfield to him.
Speaker BBut I understand what you're saying, which.
Speaker CAlso going back to your question with him moments ago, Ryan of like, do we see us bringing anyone in, like big name transfers?
Speaker CI think we're missing a winger.
Speaker CI personally, we don't have that.
Speaker CWe are built on wingers.
Speaker CFor the past four seasons, it's all been wing play, messer is leading the USL Championship in crosses.
Speaker CHe's our left back.
Speaker CHe should not be leading.
Speaker CHe shouldn't be leading the league.
Speaker CHe shouldn't be leading our team in classes right now.
Speaker CWe have a.
Speaker CAnd this isn't a knock to the players.
Speaker CThis is a pyramid style of play.
Speaker CWe are missing these creative guys on the wings who are willing to just take players on and damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Speaker CI'm not asking you to sprint back on defense, but go and create and we're not getting that out of it.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAnd when have you actually seen like, have you actually seen a play from.
Speaker AFrom Barry this season where he's gone and created like, like with the ball?
Speaker AHe's gone and created off the ball because he works.
Speaker AHe has.
Speaker AThe work rate is there and he's not lazy and he knows where to be.
Speaker ABut I haven't seen him create anything with the ball.
Speaker BWhat kind of attacker is he?
Speaker BI mean, is he something.
Speaker BHe's over the top ball.
Speaker BIs he.
Speaker BThat's how he been successful.
Speaker CHe's a big guy.
Speaker CHe's more of a stand up, stand up the target, receive the ball.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CAnd I guess the, the argument I'll make is usually you give guys some grace when they come to a new league.
Speaker CHe's in essence taking a step down in league play.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CHe should be more dominant and I think that's the issue that we're kind of running into.
Speaker CCome out of the gates.
Speaker CYou don't have to be scoring two, three goals a game, but you need to be putting in a little more like the efforts there.
Speaker CThat's awesome.
Speaker CBut like at some point it has to click.
Speaker CLike you're making a run and your guys know you're going to make that run.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker COr you know a guy's going to make a run off of you.
Speaker COr you can be the holdup play that draws guys in.
Speaker CLike, if you're going to be that central point, you have to be a disruption for the defense.
Speaker CYou have to create for your midfielders, you have to create for everyone else.
Speaker CIf you're not going to be that guy scoring and turning and trying to drive, then you need to open it up for the rest of your team.
Speaker BExactly.
Speaker BDefenders way.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAnd everything else.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BThat's a very disappointing match.
Speaker BI felt like we were, we took a huge, you know, 15 steps forward against Louisville and then really stumbled, fell back about 37 steps.
Speaker CWhat is it about this, like, not this core group of guys, but the Battery in general.
Speaker CWhy do we have to keep going through these super high highs, super low lows week to week?
Speaker CCan we not be like just a little consistency of play?
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker BIt's maybe, it's just, maybe there's.
Speaker BMaybe the players are just still trying to gel with each other.
Speaker BSix matches in, is that enough for a team to start making those connections and, and you know, on and off the pitch, the lead team, you know, really good teams to start scoring goals and start defending really well.
Speaker CI think it, it should be at, at this professional level, the amount of weeks you're.
Speaker CWhat are we at?
Speaker C8, Nine weeks of training together?
Speaker B10 Weeks more than that.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CThat you should be gelling decently enough, maybe getting your stride with.
Speaker CWhen he plays the ball like he, he can play it to my foot and not 20 yards past me.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CI don't know.
Speaker CI think, honestly, I think our midfield just needs to have more control in these games.
Speaker CAgain, there's so much space just left between our midfield and defense that any team should be able to get in behind and have 10, 20 yards of dribble.
Speaker CI think we need to tighten up there if we're gonna play, if we play more attacking.
Speaker CBut you still have to help your defenders out.
Speaker CYou can't just be like, hey, the four of you, three of you on an island, see ya.
Speaker CYeah, someone's gotta stay a little bit.
Speaker BBecause our defensive core, who, who was the starting backs?
Speaker BThis man.
Speaker CWe had Messer, Smith and Suber.
Speaker BAnd so you have Smith back there, who's been back there for a while with us in front, especially in front of Zamudio.
Speaker BAnd Subaru is just an outstanding player.
Speaker BMesser, like I said, is really killing it, moving forward with the ball.
Speaker BBut they don't seem to be gelling and they're seem to be allowing people to get shots off at Zamudio.
Speaker BOf course he can't stop, but normally we wouldn't let get off.
Speaker BDo you think that defensive failure back there is causing us to not be able to score goals?
Speaker CNo, because you're putting more guys in front of them.
Speaker CThey like those, it's on them.
Speaker CNow if you're putting that many, you're taking a defender away.
Speaker CYou're playing three back.
Speaker CYou should be creating more chances.
Speaker BRyan.
Speaker BWhat?
Speaker AAnd it's that like, you know, I saw this take and it got me really thinking that about how youth U.S. soccer is actually, you know, on the downgrade of trending because of when you're taught, you're taught one of three options, right?
Speaker AYou have this option, this option, this option, if you get right and anything else is wrong.
Speaker AWell, if one of those options are not available because coaches want to do.
Speaker AConstantly want to do certain pass patterns or certain types of movements and stuff like that.
Speaker AWell, if one player doesn't do the right movement or one player isn't there, okay, well, that player is now stuck.
Speaker AWhat is he supposed to do if he hasn't been developing the skills to actually move the ball and create again?
Speaker AThat's where we're going into create.
Speaker AAnd that's where we're at right now with the battery.
Speaker AAnd it kind of shows across, not just here, but in US Soccer is that ability to create.
Speaker AAnd I feel like now we're.
Speaker AI feel like each season comes with a different theme.
Speaker AAnd I started noticing this when I started coaching, too, that each season does have a theme, whether it's just with you and your team or if it's with the club or with the.
Speaker AThe league entirety.
Speaker AAnd it does happen.
Speaker AIt does have like a kind of like a cohesive theme.
Speaker AAnd like this year right now, I feel like we're in a creative season where you're going to have a lot more.
Speaker ANot just wingers, not just forwards, but players individually starting to come out and be more creative on top of the ball.
Speaker AAnd I hope that that's where we kind of progress to the next two years.
Speaker AYou know, more like that.
Speaker ASimilar to like the Brazilian or the Argentine playing style, but making it our own and allowing our Americans to.
Speaker ATo really develop on their own.
Speaker AThat's my take.
Speaker BThank you.
Speaker BRyan.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker AWhat do you guys think?
Speaker BWe've been talking while you've been giving orders out there.
Speaker BSo we.
Speaker BWe have a lot of thoughts.
Speaker BSo let's switch to Saturday night or Saturday afternoon kick off.
Speaker BWhat, 3:00pm Is that what's showing?
Speaker A3:00Pm 3:00pm Ignore Quartermaster Darby.
Speaker BHow are we feeling?
Speaker BI mean, just how are we feeling?
Speaker CI'm excited.
Speaker CThis is the.
Speaker CWe talk about Louisville in previous years of like these big one verse, two matchups.
Speaker CI'm more excited for this game.
Speaker CI'm more excited to see Dos Santos.
Speaker CMaybe Leland Archer will be in the stands.
Speaker CI don't know.
Speaker CHe hasn't played a single minute for Tampa Bay.
Speaker CBut like MD crying at the end of the game.
Speaker CAll of them just watching us celebrate.
Speaker BR. Ryan screen either stuck or he's like, I. I'm not prospecting.
Speaker AI'm looking at.
Speaker AI'm looking at their stuff right now, seeing how much.
Speaker AYeah, I mean, you got Myers right now.
Speaker AHe's got Two goals and an assist on the season with only having two starts.
Speaker AAnd Dos Anto is actually getting the majority of the playing time down there, so he's actually doing decent enough for Tampa.
Speaker ABut that.
Speaker AThat's another huge statement game because Tampa is, again, a team that's in the driver's seat right now in the east, and it's just another team that we can go and knock right off and have so much meaning behind.
Speaker BOkay, this is what pisses me off about the Santos going to Tampa Bay.
Speaker BI can't wear his jersey now.
Speaker CRight?
Speaker BI mean, I really can't fucking wear his jersey.
Speaker ANo, no.
Speaker AHere's what you do here.
Speaker ASo let me.
Speaker AHere's what you do.
Speaker AYou wear it.
Speaker AYou wear it.
Speaker AAnd after the game, you go and you go get a hug from that man, and he's gonna sign it again and he's gonna go, and you know,.
Speaker BI can't do that.
Speaker BLoyalty is number one.
Speaker AYou get a bird, then you.
Speaker CYou wear.
Speaker BYou're dead to me.
Speaker CYou wear it.
Speaker BYeah, you know what?
Speaker AYou know what?
Speaker AAfter this.
Speaker BBurn it.
Speaker BWe burn it, right?
Speaker CYou put.
Speaker ABurn it.
Speaker CYou wear it, and you put a little line on the second O. Yeah.
Speaker CSo it says Dos Santos.
Speaker CSantos.
Speaker CAnd you and your wife dress up as Santa Claus.
Speaker BDos Santas.
Speaker BI just won't wear it.
Speaker BI'll wear a tourist jersey.
Speaker BHow's that?
Speaker CIt's better.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CIs it this game?
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BI've missed.
Speaker CDude, are you guys excited for this game?
Speaker CLike, they're.
Speaker CThey're number one in the East.
Speaker CThey haven't lost.
Speaker CThey're undefeated.
Speaker BSeven matches.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CI don't.
Speaker AFirst I'd wear the jersey.
Speaker AI wear his jersey.
Speaker ABe like, nate, remember when this looks so good, when you beat Tampa twice.
Speaker AAnd then now you're on Tampa and you just lost.
Speaker BI think it's some pirate thing to say to him.
Speaker ALike, you know, yeah, I just rated this from the tr.
Speaker BI rip it off, throw it at him.
Speaker BTake this back, Trader.
Speaker BI'm just kidding.
Speaker BI'm just kidding.
Speaker BNate, if you're listening.
Speaker BI'm just kidding, man.
Speaker BI'm just.
Speaker CHe's not.
Speaker CHe doesn't care.
Speaker BYou don't know that.
Speaker BWe.
Speaker BWe have a listener from several places in Europe.
Speaker CHe's in Florida.
Speaker BWell, he might have a VPN.
Speaker AHey, we got a few listeners down in St. Pete.
Speaker BDo we.
Speaker BI have to check.
Speaker BYes, yes.
Speaker BI just checked.
Speaker BWe do.
Speaker BWe do have a couple of listeners down in St. Pete, and if it's the USL people, I'd really like to See your rules.
Speaker BSince nobody will answer my emails,.
Speaker AI would.
Speaker CAll right.
Speaker CWho do you guys want starting in this match?
Speaker CBecause we gotta go.
Speaker CI assume switching it up a little bit with the team.
Speaker BNo.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker ALorenz got it started.
Speaker BWho?
Speaker ALauren?
Speaker BI think so.
Speaker AI think he's got to start.
Speaker AAnd the other must start has got to be Krill.
Speaker BKrill.
Speaker BI'll go with that.
Speaker BWhat about our back?
Speaker BJoey's got to start.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CJoey should be back in for sure.
Speaker BI think not having Joey there really hurt us in.
Speaker BIn Brooklyn.
Speaker CI would.
Speaker CI would also like to see Colton come in and just start the game up top.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AOr.
Speaker COr play something with a two forward system because I don't think the wingers are there yet.
Speaker CSo if we just have two forwards playing off each other, maybe let's try that for a game and it might be a little better.
Speaker BAt least for a little bit.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker BWhy don't.
Speaker AI mean we could go right back to what we did against five four.
Speaker ANo, we did or one and then moved it to three in the bag.
Speaker AAnd then you basically play a three, five two.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BThat's how I was sitting there looking.
Speaker BThink Smith.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AI think it cold playing much better.
Speaker BThat I think we put Suber, Smith and Joey in the three.
Speaker AGot the three to do it.
Speaker AAnd why haven't we been doing it?
Speaker AI mean that she solidify and again you still get scored on.
Speaker AI mean the Louisville game we played so good.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker AYou're still going to concede.
Speaker AI mean look who's in gold.
Speaker CAnd you.
Speaker CYou got to remember Dos Santos is going to push up that field.
Speaker BYep.
Speaker CHe does leave space behind where the center back has to come over.
Speaker CSo that's going to create in the middle in the box.
Speaker CHave two forwards up.
Speaker CLike you're going to be able to create this space off of them.
Speaker CHe.
Speaker CHe hasn't changed as a player.
Speaker CHe's still going to try to drive the ball forward, move it.
Speaker CHe rarely likes to go back.
Speaker CHe likes to try and create it himself.
Speaker CSo I think we can capitalize on that.
Speaker BDoes he cause a start?
Speaker CI. I think so.
Speaker CI. I mean what.
Speaker AWhat's that option I put.
Speaker AI'd put him at cam with Krill and Landry as the sixes.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BI'll go with that.
Speaker CGood with that.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BBut what do you do, what do you do with Kelly?
Speaker AKelly's out wide on the left.
Speaker CI think he's such a good central player.
Speaker CI wish.
Speaker CI wish he was.
Speaker CLike we talk about how Malloy left and like this.
Speaker CHow do we fill this gap?
Speaker CI think Kelly's a better replacement than Iaza, personally.
Speaker BSo push concept 8 roll that wears on his jersey and.
Speaker BAnd Kelly into more of a six.
Speaker CWhat a crazy statement what the number on his back is.
Speaker BI mean, that's the reason why you kind of do that, right?
Speaker CYeah, that's the exact reason why you pick numbers.
Speaker BSorry, that was.
Speaker AI mean, I could see that of.
Speaker AInstead of playing Krill, playing Kelly in that six role, just Krill is so big.
Speaker BHe is big, dude.
Speaker AHe is so.
Speaker AI mean, did you ever go next to him?
Speaker CHe made.
Speaker AI'm six two.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AI'm six two.
Speaker AThat made me feel small.
Speaker BSo why not put these big guys in the box?
Speaker BRight?
Speaker CWell that.
Speaker CI think that's what Ryan's saying.
Speaker CYou just can't take them off the field.
Speaker CYou gotta have them on there.
Speaker BThere's a reason why we picked tall guys, right?
Speaker CYeah, we just use better wingers to drive and get more corners so we can just harass teams with our overall height.
Speaker BJust put in there, dink, dink, dink, dink.
Speaker BJust a header after header.
Speaker BRight?
Speaker BOkay, guys, we've been going.
Speaker BWe've been stammering for 47 minutes, which is really long for a wine ass session here.
Speaker AI gotta go and get ready to start closing.
Speaker BI too have to get ready to get.
Speaker BDo something.
Speaker BPatrick, what do you have to do?
Speaker CYeah, I gotta go to bed.
Speaker AYeah, his score prediction real quick and then he can go.
Speaker BGood dude.
Speaker BPatrick, you bet.
Speaker AWhat you betting, Pat?
Speaker CI think it's gonna be a.
Speaker CA 2:1.
Speaker CBut I think we go down 1:0 early, unfortunately.
Speaker CRyan, I think we, I think we battle back.
Speaker CBut I see us going down first.
Speaker AI see us.
Speaker AI see us Wrong.
Speaker ATwo, two with us with them equalizing against us late.
Speaker BOh, man, you guys are.
Speaker AThey score first, we go up 2 to 1 and then they equalize late.
Speaker BI'm going 32 and we're winning this one.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AI like.
Speaker BI'm going towards you.
Speaker BI'm going towards you, Ryan, because you last year like it leaks a goal.
Speaker BNow the movie is leaking at least two goals.
Speaker CI was going to say no clean sheets.
Speaker CSo we'll probably get one.
Speaker BYep.
Speaker AHey, if that's what it takes, that's what I'll keep doing that.
Speaker BOkay, gents, see you at the pitch.
Speaker CYellow lot, 2 o'.
Speaker BClock.
Speaker B2 O'.
Speaker CClock.
Speaker BThe other lot.
Speaker CIt's Saturday.
Speaker BWhat else we're gonna do?
Speaker CIt's gonna be 90 degrees, so everyone get a little sunscreen, grab a little water.
Speaker BHydrate or die.
Speaker CYeah, with your barley water.
Speaker BDid you say ranch water?
Speaker CRanch water.
Speaker CBarley water.
Speaker CRegular water.
Speaker CBring all the waters.
Speaker BWhiskey waters.
Speaker CMom water.
Speaker ADad water.
Speaker AKid water.
Speaker CAre we going to see a tifo in the.
Speaker CIn the back?
Speaker COh, yeah.
Speaker CMercedes Benz.
Speaker CDo you think they forgot about it already?
Speaker ASuch a waste.
Speaker ASomeone I had.
Speaker CRyan, you got a Griffin.
Speaker ASomeone came up to me saying, man, that looked good.
Speaker BAnd I was like, no, it's off center.
Speaker BIt's like the tunnel.
Speaker AYeah, I can't get every house.
Speaker BIt's like the tunnel coming out behind her goal.
Speaker BIt's like off center.
Speaker BFirst thing, you're like, wait a second.
Speaker BDoesn't look right.
Speaker CMaybe we get Home Depot for the next one, you know?
Speaker AYo, waters are yellow.
Speaker BMaybe we just need to get lasers and get a little laser light show the canon crew laser light show and put it onto the.
Speaker CWe need those drones.
Speaker CFly all the drones in as a wall.
Speaker BDrop down the big yellow wall.
Speaker BWe can do that.
Speaker AWhat if you just built a cannon crew tfo?
Speaker BThat's what we need to do.
Speaker BBig one.
Speaker AThat's what we need to do.
Speaker ACreate a canon.
Speaker BIf you have ideas, send them to us.
Speaker BGranite canon crew dot com.
Speaker BWe shall build.
Speaker ACan you feel the thunder?
Speaker ACome to put you under.
Speaker BWe are the make.
