The Charleston Battery put in one of their most complete performances of the seasonโฆ and somehow walk away with just a point.
In this episode, we break down a match where Charleston controlled large stretches, limited Tampa Bay to almost nothing, and still left you feeling like more was there for the taking.
What We Cover
- Game Control vs. Scoreline Reality
- Battery looked like the better team for most of the match โ but couldnโt fully capitalize.
- Defensive Dominance

- Missed Opportunities
- Woodwork hit, chances left on the tableโฆ this couldโve been a different story.
- Nathan Messer Masterclass
- Assist, delivery, energy, communication โ becoming one of the most important players on the pitch.
- Center Back Pairing
- Joey + Graham Smith quietly locking things down and controlling buildup.
- Tactical Talk
- 4-4-2 vs flexibility โ is this the identity or just situational?

Speaker AWelcome to the can of Crew podcast.
Speaker AI am Granite and I'm joined by Patrick.
Speaker BWhat's going on, Patrick?
Speaker AWhat is that?
Speaker ABuckets of stuff behind you.
Speaker BNot.
Speaker BThat's above my pay grade.
Speaker BOh, that's from the wife.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BOh, okay.
Speaker BThey must have been on sale or something, you know.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AWe will not inquire any further.
Speaker ASo we've brought on some guest talent and he's probably more talented than we are.
Speaker AJulian, how are you doing, Julian?
Speaker CCould be more good.
Speaker AGood.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker ASo you're an avid follower of the Battery.
Speaker AYou've been one of our people that's kind of follow us around, even in the good times, the bad times.
Speaker AAnd I've seen you and you do a little bit of work for the Battery.
Speaker CYeah, so I work with again, day staff.
Speaker CSo I'm kind of like, you know, scan tickets, host being a hoes, getting out wristbands and all that good stuff.
Speaker ASo when you're out and about the Patriots Point Stadium, you see Julian Kim.
Speaker AHigh five.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AIt's.
Speaker AThe disclaimer is he does not speak for the Battery.
Speaker AHe is speaking for his own personal self.
Speaker BHow's that either?
Speaker AOr does it satisfy the lawyers for the Battery?
Speaker CYeah, I don't get myself in trouble, so.
Speaker AYeah, we won't.
Speaker AWe won't let you get in trouble.
Speaker APatrick might get himself in trouble, but that's nothing new.
Speaker BNothing new.
Speaker ASo let's talk about some real serious stuff.
Speaker ALet's talk about the Battery.
Speaker ALet's talk about last Saturday's match against.
Speaker AWas that Tampa Bay?
Speaker AYeah, the Battery South.
Speaker AIs that what it was?
Speaker CI guess.
Speaker ASo what was your general thoughts, Julian, about the match?
Speaker ADid you get.
Speaker ADid you.
Speaker ASo you're working.
Speaker CYeah, I do get to see it.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker CYeah, So I do get to see it.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ASo what'd you think?
Speaker CIt was kind of what I expected.
Speaker CYou know, two great team going at it, you know, one's unbeaten ones.
Speaker CYou know, we're trying to find our form, so to speak.
Speaker CSo, yeah, I think it was a good match.
Speaker CBe some missed chances, but, you know, that's just how it is when you play a good team.
Speaker AThat's what they're saying about us.
Speaker AThat's a missed chances.
Speaker ANo, they didn't.
Speaker APatrick, from your perspective.
Speaker BOverall, I thought it was a great match.
Speaker BGetting to see it live is always amazing.
Speaker BWelcome back to the Patriots Point.
Speaker BThank God.
Speaker BLike, so annoying watching things on tv, being told, hey, we gotta go do this.
Speaker BAnd it's like, I just want to sit here and watch the game.
Speaker BWell, it's easier to come up with an excuse than that were going to the game and get to see it live.
Speaker BSo beautiful weather, beautiful day.
Speaker BLineups on Tampa Bay.
Speaker BKind of what you would think.
Speaker BI did pass Leland when I was walking to my seats.
Speaker BHe was coming out of the kind of player area with two official Tampa Bay coaching staff members.
Speaker AOoh.
Speaker BSo that's special.
Speaker BHe didn't look like he was walking.
Speaker BGreat, I'll say that.
Speaker BBut glad he wasn't on the field.
Speaker BYeah, I thought the Battery, overall, I thought they had a great game.
Speaker BI think stats will probably lie in this aspect as we go over them, but I thought we looked the better team for most of the game and I agree.
Speaker BYeah, I think a big, a big stat that would prove it is they didn't get a shot on goal until the 73rd minute.
Speaker BSo kudos to our defense.
Speaker BReally shutting down what they had to offer.
Speaker AWell, we, we did take control of the match and there was just a couple times that, you know, of course everybody's going to have a little counter here now and then, but I think we, we, we played very well and if we played like that against last week, we would wouldn't have lost that match, I think.
Speaker BYeah, I think, I think a big part of it is just confidence for the boys being back home and we probably getting a little bit of being back at their own place, sleeping in their own bed, feeling better, more positive attitude in training and just excited to play in front of this crowd again because I think they.
Speaker BIt's hard to say why we're so flip floppy in some of these matches, but this is the form.
Speaker BWe should see a little bit more.
Speaker BWe should see more consistency, more attack, more control of the game and it's.
Speaker BIt was great to see it happening again.
Speaker BWe haven't seen it in a little bit.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ABecause we're going to have those up and ups and downs.
Speaker AAs we build the team, they become more cohesive and gel together.
Speaker AI think we're going to see more performances like this and less performances like we did the week before.
Speaker ASo what did you think about the 3 o' clock kickoff?
Speaker CIt was definitely hot, sunny.
Speaker CI got a little sunburn.
Speaker CI don't know if you can tell but yeah.
Speaker CStaying in the sun for the whole game.
Speaker CSo you know, it was.
Speaker CBut yeah, nice earlier kickoff.
Speaker CI guess I was just to do something with like the broadcasting or something.
Speaker AIs that what it was?
Speaker CSo it's usually sometimes the case but you never know.
Speaker AWell, we had, I think they had 3, 3800 seats or tickets sold.
Speaker ASo it wasn't quite a sellout, but there's quite a few people there.
Speaker CMost packed.
Speaker CAtmosphere was great.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AWent down to.
Speaker AOh.
Speaker ASo speaking of the atmosphere, the boys were back, as I call them, and you saw them that if you look there on the supporter section on the opposite side of Lebara, and they were here a couple weeks ago and they just brought an energy.
Speaker AI think it's a fraternity from CFC and they come back wearing pink shirts and having a laugh.
Speaker AA lot of energy, which is a good thing.
Speaker AI like that.
Speaker AI like that, like, because all feed off each other.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker APatrick, do you have any thoughts on.
Speaker ADid you partake any of the food vending?
Speaker BWe did, yeah.
Speaker BSelfishly, three o' clock's a great time for me because our under one year old goes to bed at seven, so we could still make bedtime, get out of the house.
Speaker BBut I think what like Julian was saying, it was so hot.
Speaker BIt obviously wasn't a sellout because that's the first like amazing boat day and people are going to take advantage of it.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BA perk of Charleston is you have too many options of nice things to do.
Speaker BSo.
Speaker ASo really to get three, 800 is pretty good.
Speaker BYeah, for sure.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CFirst three click off.
Speaker CYeah, pretty good.
Speaker AI was harassed, I will tell you that, by one of the vendors and I won't mention Jay's name, but every time I go up there, he has to harass me.
Speaker AHis co workers next to him are fine, but he gets unruly and report him to the authorities next time.
Speaker BNow, a little birdie told me you may have seeked him out.
Speaker BI.
Speaker ANo, just serendipity.
Speaker AI. I just.
Speaker AI just.
Speaker AJay, the.
Speaker AThe bar man, he does a fantastic job and we have some good banter in line.
Speaker AAnd I think people originally, you know, when they first hear us kind of shouting at each other, they take it a little too seriously and then they realize we're joking around, especially when he calls security and then I tell him I'm just here to check his ankle bracelet, make sure it's still functioning and we still track him for his warrants and all that good stuff.
Speaker AIt's a good time.
Speaker AGood times.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BThey did have a new IPA.
Speaker ATo.
Speaker BPick from, so that was nice.
Speaker BI think last time we went we were having Carlsberg mainly.
Speaker BYeah, I believe that was the one.
Speaker BSo a few more beer options for some people and maybe more seltzer water.
Speaker BHard things for my wife.
Speaker BI don't remember because I didn't drink One last time.
Speaker BBut she did.
Speaker AShe had.
Speaker AThey had Magners.
Speaker AI don't think they've had that before.
Speaker AMaybe they have, I don't know.
Speaker ABut the only one I drank it from was a maggot nurse.
Speaker ASplit it with a wife.
Speaker AJulian, did you get to.
Speaker ASince you're standing guard duty where you were, do you get to get any food, go to the vendors, anything like that?
Speaker CSometimes, yes.
Speaker COn occasion.
Speaker AGood.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker ASo how do the people.
Speaker ASo last week, the week before, I saw you were down kind of the supporters.
Speaker AThe.
Speaker AThe old supporter section.
Speaker AThe beer garden they call it now.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AAnd then this time you were more by the stands.
Speaker CYeah, I was between the pepper and restock.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AOh, yeah.
Speaker ASo.
Speaker ASo how does everybody treat you?
Speaker CVery nice.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker CI mean, it's.
Speaker COn occasion, you know, there's some stragglers, but, you know, I try to do my best part and just make them happy and do what I can do.
Speaker CThat's all I can do.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ANice.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ASo a lot of the people that go to this, to those.
Speaker AWhatever you call those, those areas, are they new to soccer?
Speaker AThey knew the battery.
Speaker AIs it like groups going there from work or are they.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CSo like last for last.
Speaker CThe game that we had, it was a lot of mesc people, so they had like a bunch of the box suites and resets and all that.
Speaker CSo.
Speaker CYeah, on occasion he had scroops or part birthday parties or, you know, special events of some sort.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BThat's cool.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AWell, good.
Speaker AWe don't have special events, do we, Patrick?
Speaker BNo.
Speaker CHey, this is a special event.
Speaker AThis is a special event.
Speaker ASo let's talk about the starting 11.
Speaker AAny surprises?
Speaker BLots, I would say, right?
Speaker BNo.
Speaker BSuper.
Speaker BNo Berry.
Speaker ANo Berry, yeah.
Speaker BStarting well.
Speaker BNo, no Kaisedo either.
Speaker BLike for how well he's been kind of performing, you would think he would start, but the rest are the usual.
Speaker BSo I think for me, Suber is the big, big absentee, you know?
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ADid it hurt us or help us that he wasn't there?
Speaker BI think everyone else stepped up to play.
Speaker BLike, I think we gelled really well together.
Speaker BSo I don't.
Speaker BI can't really say if he would have been better than Krill.
Speaker BCause I thought Krill did really good, especially getting that early card.
Speaker BI mean, that had to be like five minutes into the game.
Speaker BGets carded and not in any trouble for the rest of the game.
Speaker BPlayed really well, attacked the ball, stood his ground.
Speaker BSo, Yeah, I thought Foster was great too.
Speaker BLike just his attacking play to run off of people and.
Speaker CYeah, in the space so, so fast too.
Speaker AHe's amazingly fast.
Speaker AI.
Speaker AIt's just he was leaving some people.
Speaker AI was like, man, he's.
Speaker AThey have no chance.
Speaker AAnd I thought he would do really well against Dos Santos if they were going up against each other because Nate's a little slow.
Speaker ABut Nate was holding his own for most of the match.
Speaker AWe're still sticking with Zamudio.
Speaker AIs it time for a change yet?
Speaker BI mean, we harped on it last time, right?
Speaker AWe've harped on it.
Speaker BJulian, what do you think of.
Speaker BDid you get to see the goal that went in?
Speaker CI saw brief.
Speaker CI saw kind of like cross, I guess on.
Speaker CI couldn't see it very well, but yeah, I kind of saw the goal.
Speaker BBut, you know, I mean, in my eyes you just see a goalkeeper rushing out.
Speaker BGet the ball or get the guy.
Speaker BGet something.
Speaker BIf you're going to rush the guy, you have to get something.
Speaker AYeah, yeah.
Speaker AWell, it was defending or, you know, Messer is.
Speaker AHe is just killing it.
Speaker AAnd I.
Speaker AHe's fantastic and he's, you know, energized.
Speaker ABut I think he kind of set that whole thing up, put us in bad situation.
Speaker ABut I think Samudio should have done better on that goal.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AWho else?
Speaker BThey also had a shot like, I don't know, five, six minutes before that.
Speaker BTheir first shot on a goal.
Speaker BIt was kind of similar setup, but the guy hit it instead of playing it to the right side.
Speaker BSo I don't know if they kind of adjusted or just like.
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker BIt definitely wasn't too much of a breakdown in play.
Speaker BLike, the angles are good.
Speaker BYou shouldn't be scoring from that side of the field.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BThe goalie should have a better idea.
Speaker BPersonally, I thought he should have just stayed in the net.
Speaker BLike the angle is pretty harsh for them to score on you.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AAnd defenders coming back.
Speaker AI mean, it just.
Speaker AWell, let's talk about a switch from our starting 11 to.
Speaker ALet's talk about MD Myers.
Speaker APretty well shut him down, did we not?
Speaker BHe played.
Speaker AOh, I don't know.
Speaker AWas he?
Speaker AYeah, he's up there.
Speaker AHe was up there.
Speaker AHe did what he normally does.
Speaker AApparently he's on another podcast saying how he wanted to score like 35 goals this season or something like that.
Speaker AI don't know where he's playing.
Speaker ARec league maybe.
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker ABut what about Dos Santos?
Speaker ABecause, you know, he's my boy.
Speaker AHe doesn't look good.
Speaker AHe doesn't look good in green.
Speaker BHe doesn't.
Speaker BNo.
Speaker BIt's really Disgusting.
Speaker BLooking for honest.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker CMiss that dude.
Speaker AI know he played really well for him though.
Speaker AI, I see why he's starting with him.
Speaker BAbsolutely hated him during the game.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BPost game comes over saying hi and everything and yeah, he's a great dude.
Speaker BHate that he's on the other team.
Speaker CHey, we're friends off the pitch and we're enemies on the pitch.
Speaker CI guess that's how it works.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AWell, I understand why he left.
Speaker AWish he didn't have to.
Speaker BI think we need to talk about the wing play a little bit because.
Speaker AWhen you say wing as in our.
Speaker BOutside backs like we had, I. I get a really good advantage sitting where I sit that they every time we had the ball kind of going forward towards halfway there's like 20, 30 yards of space and Messer and Landry, I don't know it has to be coaching because they are not just going forward into all this space and getting the ball played to them.
Speaker BYou would think it's a no brainer.
Speaker BJust go run up the field 20 yards.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd if a guy's not going to follow you, we'll get the ball to you and you're in.
Speaker BWe got a two on one over there or we could get a cross in so maybe look out for in the next game.
Speaker BIs is weird that it was almost like they were told to stay back too much.
Speaker AWho that?
Speaker AOur backs.
Speaker AOur left and right back.
Speaker BYeah, our outside backs because they were some of the most creative players.
Speaker BObviously Messer gets an assist.
Speaker BBut I thought Landry played his balls off in this game like he did did.
Speaker AMesser's assist really wasn't from open.
Speaker AIt was was from corner kick.
Speaker ASo it was kind of a set piece.
Speaker AIt wasn't open play.
Speaker BWell, he also had the one to Cad's header like slammed off the post.
Speaker BI mean it was a little more on not on Messer but this is too high.
Speaker BBut still getting the ball to a guy.
Speaker AShould he put that in Julian, what do you think?
Speaker CTheoretically, yes.
Speaker CBut you know there's pressure on him too.
Speaker CI think so.
Speaker ABut he gets paid to handle that pressure.
Speaker CTrue.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AI look back I and I missed that during the match but when I looked back at the highlights and rewatched that part I was like oh man.
Speaker AThat was basically an open net.
Speaker AAnd just I guess after Sunday watching a lot of stuff hit the woodwork too.
Speaker AI just sometimes you, you're lucky, sometimes you're not.
Speaker AI guess I don't say lucky because I hate that word in, in the context of soccer because they make things happen or you don't but it could.
Speaker AIt could have really changed the whole complexion of the game.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AWhat about Ikaza?
Speaker ADo you think he had a better match than he's had in a while?
Speaker CI think so,.
Speaker BYeah, for sure.
Speaker BI think he definitely stepped it up from the last one.
Speaker BBare minimum he was getting touches on the ball and you can see him playing.
Speaker BSo I think the last game he was maybe caught a little too much in no lands land where he gets put to the background let's say.
Speaker ASo he was playing more of that eight role, was he not?
Speaker AHe's playing a little more forward than he has been the last couple matches.
Speaker CYeah, I think it was like attacking mid type.
Speaker AYeah, I think that's where he naturally goes.
Speaker ASo I had K. That's like he looks like he's huge, like a giant in the midfield.
Speaker CHe's strong too.
Speaker AOh, I was.
Speaker ASomebody was asking me about him.
Speaker AThat Chelsea fan I was telling you about.
Speaker AWe were.
Speaker AAnyways, he goes who is that huge like player in the middle of field?
Speaker AThat's are.
Speaker AI said said that's cr He's a pretty big guy and he's a midfielder.
Speaker AI said y. Yeah, they pair him.
Speaker BUp next to Foster.
Speaker AIt's great.
Speaker AExactly.
Speaker AThey should put.
Speaker AThey should put all three center mids there and put cause on one side, Foster on the other.
Speaker CAnd we have Alec Hughes back in the pitch.
Speaker CHe's going to add some more tallness there.
Speaker AYeah, pretty sure.
Speaker BFoster is Ikaza's like right hand guy.
Speaker BLike he opens the field so much for him.
Speaker BYou have to follow you.
Speaker BHe's so fast, so quick.
Speaker BHe.
Speaker BHe gets into space every time where it's easy to play a guy like that.
Speaker BThe ball you just got to kick it at least 30 yards in front of him and you know he's going to get it.
Speaker ASo let's talk about quickly the system.
Speaker AI mean we.
Speaker AWe played 442 which we've kind of moved around three at the back, forward to back, that kind of stuff.
Speaker ADid that work?
Speaker AI.
Speaker AYou think it worked well for us or do you think it's better that we keep changing up depending upon the competition?
Speaker AWell, let me talk about that.
Speaker AI think I like the 442, three to back I think worked against the Kentuckians.
Speaker BThe way we rotate it, just the players you put in, you're going to have to switch formation because they're not naturally stuck to certain roles.
Speaker BSo like you have a guy like Landry, you might switch a little more to three back for the game because he presses really high and even gets into that center mid roll, which opens up the role for that player to push up and maybe be a second cam or a winger.
Speaker BSo I think it just depends on the personnel you're picking more than the matchup itself for us.
Speaker AAnd Landry was doing he last season.
Speaker AHe played more midfield.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AAnd so put him as a right back.
Speaker AI think him tucking in his shirt, that makes him much better.
Speaker AMakes him faster.
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker BDefinitely makes him tackle harder, that's for sure.
Speaker BIt's proven.
Speaker BIt's proven that.
Speaker BAnd like tape around your ankle, fishing guards up.
Speaker AYeah, for sure.
Speaker AThat way when you hit at high velocity, they don't rattle around.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ASo we had possession, possession.
Speaker APossession wise, we weren't as dominant as we normally are.
Speaker ABut when you look at all the stats, we were kind of pretty even.
Speaker BYeah, I think that that's what I was alluding to.
Speaker BTo begin, like, we definitely controlled the ball more the way Tampa Bay would try to break and just lose possession or give away a cheap ball or try and play it in the air.
Speaker BYeah, we were too dominant to win it back.
Speaker BSo I think the stats lie a lot in this game because I thought we dominated most of this in our play and we weren't really threatened compared to they can take shots, but they didn't have that many on target until late into the second half.
Speaker AOne of the stats that popped out at me was, and it always seems kind of funny to me, so touches in the opposition box, they had 11, we had 23.
Speaker AThat stark difference between the two of us.
Speaker ABut then always go like we only had 23 touches inside the opposition box.
Speaker AWhich box are they looking at a penalty?
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker ABut still, it means that we're really getting a ball in there and.
Speaker AAnd, you know, shooting from close quarters versus from the long range shots.
Speaker AAnd I was trying to look up the other stat that kind of stuck out at me.
Speaker AAnd let's talk about quickly Casad hitting the post.
Speaker A71 Minutes.
Speaker AWe talked about briefly.
Speaker AOh, what does he need to do different to get that ball in there?
Speaker ABecause he was just subbed on.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker ARight before then.
Speaker CI think so.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BYeah, I think just more opportunities.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BJust keep feeding the ball the box.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BThis is how you score goals in any game.
Speaker BI mean, you're coming up cold off the bench.
Speaker BThis could have been his.
Speaker BI don't remember.
Speaker BMaybe his.
Speaker BOne of his first two touches.
Speaker BSo.
Speaker AJust, I don't know.
Speaker BTouches you get on the ball, the more comfortable you get in the game, the more you're feeling it and the more you, like, just get more opportunities.
Speaker AYeah, he was in great position.
Speaker AHe's there by himself.
Speaker AI don't know if it was just, like, drift into the ride a little bit, and it just kind of set everything off, but it was great service.
Speaker AJust.
Speaker CIt's supposed to add a little more oomph in that header, I think.
Speaker AYeah, I mean, that's what it is.
Speaker ASo what you think the opposition.
Speaker AKeeper, white, number one.
Speaker AI'll tell you what I'll think of him because I was down both ends.
Speaker AHe's whiny.
Speaker AHe's always cramping up.
Speaker BWhat do you guys think of getting a point here?
Speaker BYou think we should have got the win, or is it all right that we walk away from at least something positive?
Speaker CI feel like we should have tried to get a win, but I think a point against a undefeated team that's, you know, on the fly, basically, I think it's a good stepping stone for us to improve.
Speaker AI agree.
Speaker AI asked that question to Coach Pierman after the match, and he was slightly positive because I was trying to make it a positive question.
Speaker ALike, look, we played the top team two weeks, you know, couple weeks apart, and we took three points away from Kentucky and then took one point from here, and he was still like, yes, I hear you, kind of.
Speaker AI'm a little disappointed we only got one point because he felt like we played so dominantly over Tampa Bay, which we did, too.
Speaker ASo I like it.
Speaker AIt's.
Speaker AIt's just too bad we lost, you know, dropped three points in between.
Speaker ABut I think it shows.
Speaker AHopefully it builds up that confidence with.
Speaker AWith the team that they can.
Speaker AThey can dry, you know, slay dragons.
Speaker COr young teams, so.
Speaker CWhich is a much improvement.
Speaker CYeah, Yeah.
Speaker BI think we wear the jerseys more often.
Speaker CPersonally, I love those jerseys, man.
Speaker AOh, let's talk about them then.
Speaker BIt might be my favorite one.
Speaker AYou think?
Speaker AWhy?
Speaker AWhat jumps out to you?
Speaker AWhat speaks to you, Patrick?
Speaker BI love.
Speaker BI love retro looks, but when retro is done of high quality and not, like, cheaply made, I don't know, it's like the button, the nostalgia, it's something different.
Speaker BLike, I love the black and yellow, but it's nice to wear something different at home, not in a Cup game, like, have an alternate for when people wear puke green yellow jerseys.
Speaker BI mean, it looked great.
Speaker BI just.
Speaker BI love the whole aesthetic of it.
Speaker BI can't wait to get one.
Speaker BI'm didn't get One Saturday so I want to get a personalized one so.
Speaker CI think they're online already so you can grab yours.
Speaker ASo who you getting?
Speaker BI'm getting my name on it.
Speaker BOh, Patrick, no, I'm going to get Zamudia.
Speaker AYou are just incredible.
Speaker AIncredible.
Speaker AYou're such a supporter.
Speaker BAnything for the team.
Speaker BGot show show them some love somewhere, right?
Speaker ANo, seriously, who you going to get on the back?
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker BLike I think Landry, I love the way plays like I love his style but I don't know, I wish if Subaru was playing center back and just crushing people and doing what he does best and I would have got him hands down.
Speaker ASo let's talk about jersey buying tactics or strategy.
Speaker ASo what's six matches in right.
Speaker AGoing up on our seventh.
Speaker AAt what point do you go okay, this is the player I'm supporting and putting on my back.
Speaker AIs it too early?
Speaker AI mean like sewer might next match run out be like killing it.
Speaker AYou're going to be disappointed that you have Zamudio on your back.
Speaker BI don't think I would ever be disappointed.
Speaker BI have him on my back because I will carry him on my back the whole season if I have to.
Speaker BBut yeah, I just don't think we've had anyone become the breakout standout player yet.
Speaker BOur go to which we've seen past few years of guys just stepping up and becoming that center factor.
Speaker BThe guy who like I mean mainly we've bought targets that were huge profile like when we got Cal Jennings.
Speaker BThat's a big name.
Speaker BYou're getting the leading goal scorer.
Speaker BYou're bringing them to your club.
Speaker BYou're pairing them up with some guys who are leading the league in assist.
Speaker BMalloy was the center of our team.
Speaker BSo I think all of us fans just need a little adjustment to figure out who we really want to get on the jersey.
Speaker ASo let's Julian, what do you think what jersey you getting and who you getting on your on your jersey?
Speaker CMaybe Colton slot.
Speaker AOh yeah.
Speaker CRun the young gun maybe.
Speaker AYeah, he's good.
Speaker CI don't know.
Speaker CIt's that or may Subar on one of those.
Speaker CMaybe Emilio.
Speaker AI mean so Emilio is a classic, right?
Speaker COr maybe Daniel Kuznetka maybe.
Speaker CMaybe him too.
Speaker AMaybe we get it like Velcro.
Speaker ASo we just put different numbers and names in the back.
Speaker CSmart.
Speaker BI think you guys talked me into it's going to be Joey.
Speaker BHow could I not pick Joey?
Speaker AI know right?
Speaker BMy favorite guys on that pitch.
Speaker AI was far as to go when Joey's back There he is.
Speaker AJust full energy.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker AMaybe that's the stat I was looking for.
Speaker CLet me see those passes that he has.
Speaker CMan, he's.
Speaker CHe's good.
Speaker BHe's so good.
Speaker BHe.
Speaker BAfter the game, I was like, hey, great game, Joey.
Speaker BHe looked like, so angry we didn't win that game.
Speaker AOh, sure.
Speaker AWouldn't you.
Speaker BThank you.
Speaker BNo, he didn't see me.
Speaker CHe.
Speaker BHe thought it was a little kid.
Speaker BHe was being nice.
Speaker AKilled Palmer up.
Speaker BIt was her.
Speaker BShe said it.
Speaker BThe baby said it.
Speaker ABaby said it.
Speaker AWhere is it?
Speaker BYeah, I think those two.
Speaker BSo this is what is crazy to me.
Speaker BHow do we fit Suber into the.
Speaker BBack into this team?
Speaker BBecause I don't think he's fitting in super well into the role he wants to play.
Speaker BI mean, maybe this role of coming off the bench until he gets a better understanding of the play because it is a totally different position.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd you have Joey and Graham Smith behind him.
Speaker BLike, I'd rather have those two start consistently, keep the groove going, play really well together at the cost.
Speaker BThat Sean Suber needs a little more time to learn this role that he is very adamant in being in.
Speaker AJoey adds so much energy and.
Speaker AYeah, I think you gotta be getting back your jersey.
Speaker ABut you mentioned somebody's name.
Speaker AGraham Smith.
Speaker AHe had two massive tackles that were just.
Speaker AJust killed it with the one.
Speaker AThe first one, I was like, oh, man, that was just incredible.
Speaker AAnd the second one wasn't as impactful, but it was still a really fantastic tackle.
Speaker AAnd you can see why he was, you know, such a great defender.
Speaker ALast couple matches, maybe he hasn't been playing up to the standard he normally does, but this weekend he's done.
Speaker AHe's done a fantastic job.
Speaker BYeah, I think he's done well.
Speaker BI. I think he's a solid player.
Speaker BHe.
Speaker BWe.
Speaker BHe's one we don't have to talk about often.
Speaker BSo that just shows you how good he is.
Speaker BYeah, that we don't really touch on him.
Speaker BAs always outstanding or.
Speaker BMan, where is his form gone?
Speaker BHe's just been consistent.
Speaker BI'm just.
Speaker BWhat do you guys think of Cabrera?
Speaker BBecause I think that's the one question mark of.
Speaker BIs he a rotational guy in this squad now?
Speaker BShould we be thinking of switching him out a little bit more?
Speaker BMaybe Colton Swan going a little right, so.
Speaker BBut Barry's up top, so you have a little more attacking threat with that.
Speaker AI. I want to see more Colton Swan, Cabrera, and same thing with Barry.
Speaker ABarry, he's got a lot of energy, but somebody pointed out this is like that Guy jogs a lot.
Speaker AI'm like, a couple matches ago, he was on fire.
Speaker AHe was running everywhere.
Speaker AAnd then this past match there was, he was just not putting out the energy.
Speaker ABut Cabrera, he had a couple shots on goal, one shot on the goal.
Speaker ABut I don't think he's, he's lifting us like we need a lift.
Speaker CMaybe putting him in that cam roll, you know, under maybe barrier swan and strike and put him in cam.
Speaker CMaybe he'll find his role there.
Speaker CMaybe too.
Speaker AMaybe so.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BI don't know where everyone fits yet.
Speaker BI think Pyramid's still figuring that out too.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CBecause we also have injuries like Allen's out, so maybe that's why Subar's playing that defensive mid roll for the time.
Speaker CThat could be too.
Speaker CWho knows?
Speaker CBut that's what my thought process is with that.
Speaker BIt would be incredible if he just clicks and him and Krill are just who, that no one could run by these guys.
Speaker AWho, Subar.
Speaker BYeah, yeah.
Speaker BSubaru and Krill.
Speaker BWhat team could run past those two and then be like, damn it, now I got Joey and Graham Smith right behind them.
Speaker AWould that be fantastic?
Speaker AThat's, I like that thought.
Speaker AAnd then we put Emilio up in front of him.
Speaker AI still can't find the stats I was looking for.
Speaker AI found him earlier.
Speaker AJoey had some phenomenal stat I was looking at earlier.
Speaker ALike his.
Speaker AOh, here it is.
Speaker AAccurate passes at 58 out of 60.
Speaker A94% Of his passes were connecting.
Speaker AThat's Joey.
Speaker ACenter back.
Speaker AYou know, center backs in our, in our system of play where we kind of, you know, possession ball, expect them to have a lot of passes.
Speaker ABut when you're getting passing percentages like that, even when they're easy passes around to the side.
Speaker BBut still, I mean, pretty crazy.
Speaker BTen passes into the final third for Graham Smith.
Speaker AIsn't that amazing?
Speaker BThat's pretty insane.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker CFor a center back too.
Speaker AI know.
Speaker AWell, it's because our center backs play right, right above the D, right?
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker CThey kind of push up, I think.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker CGives us more blur and attacking prowess, I guess.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AAnd Joey had eight in the final third, so I think I, I, I feel like Joey and Graham are, are two center backs that we just need to stick with everyone else we need to move around because we have suber that can play center back.
Speaker AWho else can play center back?
Speaker BI'm sure you could put a couple guys in there.
Speaker BI don't think that's their best position, but I think you can slot a few.
Speaker BLike, honestly, I think Landry could Probably sit in there.
Speaker ASo what happens when Graham gets hurt?
Speaker BHe's not going to get hurt.
Speaker BWho says that?
Speaker AI said that.
Speaker AWho'd you say?
Speaker CJulia Isa beige put Shawn Schuber back in there.
Speaker CSupposedly that happens.
Speaker CAlmost.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CBut yeah.
Speaker AOh, have we played Subaru and Joey?
Speaker AIs that our two center backs?
Speaker CI think we played Sean and Graham for a little bit.
Speaker CJoey kind of came back and switched around or something like that.
Speaker ASo.
Speaker ASo we pushed Graham up forward to be our striker and then put Subaru in, Joey back there.
Speaker ASo the one person we haven't talked a whole lot about is who's becoming my favorite player is Messer.
Speaker AI mean, he is just having match after mast match after match where he's given good service in the box.
Speaker AThey're not like errant shots, you know, just kind of lazy ones.
Speaker AHe got an assist in the match last couple matches, got a couple assists.
Speaker AOne of the things I enjoyed, I was on the sideline taking some pictures and he.
Speaker AYou can hear him just talking to the other players, you know, giving instructions, tell him where he's coming.
Speaker AI mean it was just.
Speaker AI haven't seen that from a left back before.
Speaker CYeah, because it's usually one of our center backs probably speaking out.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker CGood to see you though.
Speaker ASo what we haven't talked about is Nathan Messer and his incredible corner kick off of the back of Martinez's head.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BPretty high to get to that.
Speaker AHe did, he did.
Speaker CHe did strike your instincts, I guess, even though he's playing like right back or left back occasionally.
Speaker ABut you know, well, he, he.
Speaker ASo the interview afterwards, he was saying, you know, we practice stuff like this, but you don't really practice it flicking off the back of your head.
Speaker AWhich I thought was funny.
Speaker CI think it's just James thinks too.
Speaker CYeah, yeah.
Speaker CBut then he exposed.
Speaker ABut yeah, here's the other cool thing about Martinez.
Speaker AAnd not that I had a low opinion of Martinez, but his aftermath interview, he was, he was nervous.
Speaker AHe was nervous that, you know, to do the interview.
Speaker AEnglish isn't his necessarily his first language, but he was just, he was nervous about it.
Speaker AI was like, you know, player of your caliber, why are you nervous about this stuff?
Speaker ABut it's kind of cool to see this, see that.
Speaker AI don't call it being humble, but kind of see the frailty of, of a player.
Speaker CYeah, we're all human.
Speaker CSo yeah.
Speaker BMessers corner kick.
Speaker BAre we at least like excited we have an outside player taking these and is good at it instead of having to push our center mid out to this.
Speaker AThat has to run at the beat feet back to cover any counters.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker CBecause they didn't like Arturo and Aaron take her corners last year.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker ASo is.
Speaker AIs Messer taking all of our corners, both sides?
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker CI feel like sometimes they switch it, but I feel like it's mostly him.
Speaker AI think Landry took some corners last season.
Speaker CI think they're trying to just see who's has the good service.
Speaker CI guess maybe.
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker BI mean it's working, right?
Speaker BHe's getting the balls in the dangerous position.
Speaker CSo we need.
Speaker AAnd they're good balls.
Speaker AI mean it's not.
Speaker AI think it's hard to.
Speaker AOr the people.
Speaker AThere's players who put balls into the area.
Speaker ABut he's putting it in the penalty spot.
Speaker AHe's putting in the box.
Speaker AHe's putting it where it's playable and you can see kind of sometimes he gets frustrated that there's not more done with his service.
Speaker BHe's switching it up too.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker BSo the goal was more front post area.
Speaker BThe shot that bounced off the post was back post cross.
Speaker BIt's like he's hitting it into different areas to get guys involved.
Speaker BNot like a guy taking corner kicks who's just.
Speaker BIt's routine.
Speaker BI hit it kind of in this little area every time because people can see that and goalies adjust to it and they may push guys aside and run to that spot to go and collect it.
Speaker BSo it's nice to see that he can place it in different areas to go ahead and keep the opposition guessing.
Speaker CIt's definitely putting out a bread basket for our player strikers to attack for.
Speaker ASo who's your player of the match, Patrick?
Speaker BOoh, player of the match.
Speaker BFor me it has to be Messer.
Speaker BI thought he just did a really good job even hustling back.
Speaker BIf we had had the ball turned over and honestly just killing a counter attack by getting in front of it or just getting in front of a guy, not letting him run back.
Speaker BObviously had a great offensive game, but those little things you don't really see unless you're live watching a certain player.
Speaker BI think he did it all.
Speaker AJulian, who's your player of the match?
Speaker CI know we Messer won it for us, but it was between probably Huu and Emilio.
Speaker CFor me, I feel like they kind of certified some spots and.
Speaker AReally?
Speaker CYeah, I think so.
Speaker AWe're not talking about Jeremy Kelly.
Speaker AWe have not said a word about him.
Speaker AI think.
Speaker CPlay.
Speaker AYeah, he play.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AI mean he.
Speaker AHe just.
Speaker AHe's that kind of quiet, you know, calmness there in the.
Speaker AIn the midfield that helps us out every once in a while.
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker AI'm gonna go with Messer.
Speaker AMesser, he was just.
Speaker AHe's.
Speaker AHe's consistently playing good matches.
Speaker AYeah, I think we need.
Speaker BI would give.
Speaker BI would give a second man of the match to half and half Joey and Graham for honestly just completely shutting down.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BMyers like.
Speaker AYep.
Speaker CThat's a puller, in fact, right there.
Speaker CSo, you know.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BAnd he was on a.
Speaker BOn an island up there.
Speaker BThey obviously had a game plan, let's feed him the ball.
Speaker BAnd we shut it down most of the time.
Speaker AThey've been playing against him for several years, not just at matches, but in practice and everything else, so.
Speaker AOh, that was the other stat I was looking at.
Speaker ASorry.
Speaker AJump in here is.
Speaker AIt's kind of telling to me, and maybe you all see it differently is clearances.
Speaker AWe had 18, Tampa Bay had 32.
Speaker AAnd clearances to me are kind of like, you just get the ball the hell out of there.
Speaker BRight?
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AAnd when you're doing 32 clearances and we're doing half as many, that's kind of telling how much time we spent down at that end.
Speaker CYeah, I think we were just putting enough pressure on them to, you know, make them react.
Speaker BAnd it's.
Speaker BIt's nice not letting our old players come in and get a win.
Speaker BI think they.
Speaker BThey probably thought they were going to undefeated, looking pretty damn strong and basically shut them down.
Speaker BI enjoyed it.
Speaker BI. I thought the goal was a mistake.
Speaker BI don't really give that much credit to their offense because there's a.
Speaker BOne guy got the ball between his legs, scored.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BLike it wasn't like some world strike.
Speaker BI thought our corner kick was a great open play.
Speaker BGetting up, winning that ball.
Speaker BThat shows more to me on getting a goal than,.
Speaker AYou know, set piece fc.
Speaker AI guess.
Speaker AI guess we'd be.
Speaker AIs it Charleston Madrid Soccer club?
Speaker AIs that what it is?
Speaker ASo it'd be f. Set piece sc.
Speaker AThat's all I have, I think.
Speaker ALet me check my notes.
Speaker BYeah, we're off for a bit too.
Speaker AWhen's our next match?
Speaker CWednesday or away?
Speaker BWe're off from Patriots Point.
Speaker BWe still play games until our next.
Speaker AHome match like May 2nd or something like that, right?
Speaker CI think so, yeah.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker B14 Jacks.
Speaker AWell, we.
Speaker AWe didn't.
Speaker AI didn't mention this.
Speaker AI don't think I did either.
Speaker ABack to Messer.
Speaker AI think he was named usl.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ASo that was in my notes.
Speaker AThis is like the second one down from what I was supposed to talk about and apparently I skipped.
Speaker AThat's all I got.
Speaker AShould we talk about the next match?
Speaker CLet's do it.
Speaker ARhode Island.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AIs it gonna be tough?
Speaker AEasy.
Speaker CMix of both, I think.
Speaker CI haven't played in a while, so just maybe new players going over there from our club, you know, trying to see how they play and kind of just feel it out for ourselves, I guess.
Speaker AAnd Messer come from, I think, Rhode Island.
Speaker CHe played there for a little bit.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker CAt the Portland, but.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AAre they still at high school?
Speaker AWhat was that.
Speaker AWhat was that stadium that they were at?
Speaker AThe first, because we talk about was like rainy.
Speaker AIt's another one of those Brooklyn things where you can only see like a quarter of the field.
Speaker BCenterville Bank Stadium.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AI would.
Speaker AI would deposit my money in the Centerville Bank.
Speaker CIt's nice seeing that.
Speaker BYeah, we only have one win against them, so it'd be nice to actually beat them another time.
Speaker AThey.
Speaker AThey just kill us.
Speaker AAnd they're.
Speaker AThey're kind of not bottom of the table, but they're lower half.
Speaker AI know it's only six matches in, but, you know, we just struggle against them.
Speaker AI don't know what it is.
Speaker BYeah, I think if we start taking some points away from road games, that'd be fine.
Speaker ALet's see.
Speaker ARight now we sit third and Rhode Island's at 11th.
Speaker ABut they've only played five matches or six.
Speaker ABut they're.
Speaker AI mean, the last five a draw against Sporting Jacksonville.
Speaker ATheir bottom table.
Speaker ARemember, lost to Louisville, lost to Miami,.
Speaker BWhich we didn't lose to Louisville.
Speaker BSo there you go.
Speaker BWe should crush them.
Speaker BSeven nothing.
Speaker AThey tied to Detroit, though.
Speaker BIt was cold.
Speaker BIt was cold.
Speaker AAnd.
Speaker AAnd they beat up on Lexington.
Speaker ASo the two teams that they've.
Speaker AWhere's Lexington?
Speaker AAt the table.
Speaker CIn the West.
Speaker CSo.
Speaker AYeah, that.
Speaker AThat doesn't count.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BEvery time I see his goals don't.
Speaker ACount in the west, every time I see Lexington, I think Columbia and I was like, they have a team up there too.
Speaker ABut anyways, okay, R.I. it's going to be tough match.
Speaker AIt's always a tough match.
Speaker AIs there anything we change from?
Speaker ADo we go back to a three at the back?
Speaker ADo we stay at four to back?
Speaker ADo we play Messer up against his old teammates?
Speaker BFor sure.
Speaker BI think maybe you give Martinez a start.
Speaker BComing off getting a goal.
Speaker AI think he earned it.
Speaker BYou got to play some guys in, you know, so it's not as if we're not going to rotate a few of them in and out.
Speaker BMaybe Subaru's back starting in this one.
Speaker BYou don't sign a guy like that and give him two games off coming off the bench.
Speaker BSo I think he's back in the lineup.
Speaker AWhere do you play him?
Speaker BPlay him wherever.
Speaker BHe'll figure it out.
Speaker CHoly center back.
Speaker CWho knows?
Speaker CHe could play a whole position right now.
Speaker CNot that we have the talent, but, you know.
Speaker ASo, Julian, what do you think about the US against Rhode Island?
Speaker AJust general thoughts.
Speaker CI think it's going to be tough because I feel it's always tough for us, but I think we might have a chance because they haven't seen us really play and we haven't played them in a while.
Speaker CSo it's probably going to be a little nervous antics from them and you know, we'll see how it goes.
Speaker CBut I think we'll get a one or two nil win at least.
Speaker AOh, now we're going to scoring predictions.
Speaker ASo we did.
Speaker ASo let's back up to that.
Speaker ASo last podcast we talked about our scoring predictions.
Speaker AI. I think I said three.
Speaker ATwo against Tampa Bay.
Speaker AWhat was yours, Patrick?
Speaker BI don't remember.
Speaker BThat was a while ago.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AI think you were one.
Speaker BI think it was one.
Speaker BOne.
Speaker AOne one.
Speaker AIs that what it was?
Speaker AYes.
Speaker AVery good.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BOne.
Speaker BOne or two?
Speaker BOne.
Speaker BI didn't see us keeping a clean sheet, so.
Speaker AYeah, well, we had.
Speaker AWe discussed that kind of where I went.
Speaker AYeah, we're never getting a clean sheet again.
Speaker AMaybe against the way.
Speaker BWe're definitely going to get a clean sheet.
Speaker AThey played well this match.
Speaker BWe just have to let zero shots on target.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BUntil the 95th minute.
Speaker CThat's fair.
Speaker CAnd I'll put where.
Speaker CApparently it's a Breeze cup now between us.
Speaker ABetween who?
Speaker CRhode Island.
Speaker CUs.
Speaker CBecause we're both sponsored by Breeze.
Speaker AReally?
Speaker AA failing airline cup, I guess.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BDo they have a direct route for us to take to get there?
Speaker BBecause I can't call it the Briscoe.
Speaker AThat would be pretty cool, wouldn't it just.
Speaker ABree says we're just.
Speaker AWe're just.
Speaker AWe'll transport battery players or fans up to watch the Rhode island match, bring them back next year back the other way.
Speaker CI mean, that's what Rhode island did when they came down here.
Speaker CThey had.
Speaker CThey brought their fans and players and all that, so.
Speaker AWell, Charleston area is much better than.
Speaker AWhere do they play?
Speaker AR. Is there any.
Speaker AOh, Pawtucket.
Speaker AThat's a nice resort area, is it not?
Speaker BThat's Nam Tucket.
Speaker AOh, sorry.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BYou're confusing your.
Speaker BYour paw and your Nan.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ASo one was my grandpa, the other is my grandpa.
Speaker AWhat else?
Speaker AThat's it.
Speaker AThat's all I got.
Speaker AI'm gonna say, of course I'm gonna go.
Speaker AI still have faith in Samudio.
Speaker ABut we're gonna do three, two.
Speaker BThat sounds like a lot of faith.
Speaker AIt does.
Speaker CWell, I'm gonna say one.
Speaker CNo dots.
Speaker CYou think so?
Speaker AOne.
Speaker ANil.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker CBecause I feel like they.
Speaker CThey generally like to drop back, you know, kind of like Brooklyn, you know, where they play that four or five back system.
Speaker CAnd they kind of like want to sit back and let us attack and they counter attack or something and they won.
Speaker ADid.
Speaker ADid we not lose Brooklyn?
Speaker AWe did, yeah.
Speaker CFortunately.
Speaker AOkay, fair enough.
Speaker APatrick, anything for the good of the order.
Speaker BNo, just everyone have a safe week.
Speaker BAre we still on burn burn Ban notice State?
Speaker AWhere are you?
Speaker BI think.
Speaker BI thought the whole state was.
Speaker AWhat are you going to burn?
Speaker BJust a jersey, you know.
Speaker AOkay, That's fine.
Speaker AThe governor has not signed any.
Speaker AOrder says you cannot burn jerseys.
Speaker BPerfect.
Speaker AOkay, Julian, what are you up to next?
Speaker CI'm just gonna probably work and then watch the game Wednesday.
Speaker AJust working, grinding it out.
Speaker AGood, good.
Speaker AThank you for joining us.
Speaker AAppreciate it.
Speaker CIt's always a pleasure.
Speaker CAnytime.
Speaker AWe will see you again, sir.
Speaker CYes.
Speaker AAnd that's all I have.
Speaker APeace.
Speaker AWe are the fleet.
Speaker AYour ship, we will sink.
Speaker CBut we, we are the battle Ra.
