Cup win: Smith at the Death, Battery Find a Pulse

The Cannon Crüe is back to talk Prinx Tires USL Cup action as the Charleston Battery open Group 6 play with a late 2-1 win over Loudoun United.

Granit is joined by Patrick and guest Andrew to break down a strange but useful cup result: Miguel Berry gets his first Battery goal, Graham Smith delivers the stoppage-time winner, and Charleston walks away with three points in the group stage. It was not always pretty, but after a rough road stretch, the result mattered.

The crew also digs into the bigger questions around this Battery squad: road form, attacking creativity, Miguel Berry’s role, whether Emilio Ycaza can help drive the midfield, and whether Graham Smith is becoming the on-field leader this team needs.

Plus: youth soccer foot races, Blue Angels flyovers, mystery tire sponsors, white-wall tire debates, crop dusters over Patriots Point, and a look ahead to Sporting Jacksonville.

In this episode:

  • Charleston’s 2-1 USL Cup win over Loudoun United
  • Miguel Berry’s first goal for the Battery
  • Graham Smith’s late winner and growing leadership role
  • Why the Battery still look unsettled on the road
  • The search for creativity in midfield
  • Whether the team is still missing an Aaron Molloy-type leader
  • Preview and predictions for Sporting Jacksonville
  • Cinco de Mayo night, Star Wars confusion, tacos, and rain

Speaker A

Welcome to the can of crew.

Speaker A

I am Granite and I'm joined by Patrick.

Speaker B

What's going on, man?

Speaker A

Just another day.

Speaker A

We've had two matches since last time we talked to do believe and we're going to talk ad nauseam about both of them.

Speaker A

Life has been good.

Speaker A

We might get a little rain too.

Speaker A

Oh, I did, I did get.

Speaker A

So I, you know, I do a little refereeing on the side.

Speaker A

City Rec league and tonight was U10.

Speaker A

Two girls matches and there's this one girl and she's just a beast and she just runs Both halves, they're 25 minute halves and at the end I do some sprints just so I can keep my old man but kind of from dying.

Speaker A

And she always, at the end she goes, hey ref, I'll race you.

Speaker A

So we race the race the half and again she's beaten me every time except for the time I cheated and started running then said go.

Speaker A

So kudos to the young lady that can beat me in the foot race.

Speaker B

She should let you win.

Speaker B

You hold the literal cards to her future match.

Speaker A

Maybe so, yeah.

Speaker A

She was always on fire.

Speaker A

She's a fantastic player.

Speaker A

Andrew, you're joining us, sir?

Speaker A

Yeah, we had you on a while back and that one never got published because for whatever reasons.

Speaker A

So thanks for joining us.

Speaker A

You are an avid battery supporter.

Speaker A

You stand up or in the stands with us and out in the parking lot with your family having a good time.

Speaker A

What else should we know?

Speaker C

You summed it up pretty good.

Speaker C

I just love the battery.

Speaker A

That's it.

Speaker A

Fantastic.

Speaker A

So how's been your week?

Speaker C

It's been pretty good.

Speaker C

It's been kind of long, but we have a vacation next week, so.

Speaker C

Looking forward to that.

Speaker A

Where are you going?

Speaker C

Nashville.

Speaker A

Oh, nice.

Speaker C

Going to a concert.

Speaker A

Do they have music in Nashville?

Speaker A

I don't know.

Speaker A

Probably pretty good place.

Speaker A

Blue Angels are in town.

Speaker B

Not to be confused with Hell's Angels.

Speaker B

Very different.

Speaker A

Exactly.

Speaker A

One's.

Speaker A

One is on the ground, the other one's not on the ground.

Speaker B

Both can kill you though.

Speaker A

Both can kill you.

Speaker C

Facts.

Speaker A

Different ways though.

Speaker A

Different ways.

Speaker A

Different ways.

Speaker A

So Blue Angels are in town.

Speaker A

I wish they would have coordinated the match this weekend with their stuff they're doing over the harbor on Saturday because that would have been really impressive to get the Blue Angels to fly over kickoff.

Speaker C

That would have been dope.

Speaker A

But hey, I just think of these ideas.

Speaker A

I'm not the one that executes it.

Speaker B

We could always coordinate with Patriots Point, maybe get the little tourist helicopter, fly by from time to time.

Speaker A

That would be a great Idea hey maybe we get a crop duster when it has a banner that flies across says cannon crew on it or something.

Speaker B

Like that or fertilizer for the grass.

Speaker A

Crop duster just spray everyone with like water Just kind of Fun about every 10 minutes it flies over especially when it gets hot and humid this summer so we're going to talk about two matches first one and we're gonna talk about Rhode island match and I don't know so let's.

Speaker A

Let's get into.

Speaker A

Well I guess that about sums it up for that match so let's move on to loud the USL cup as we were talking beforehand where has the Jagermeister gone The us all got drank.

Speaker C

Up drunk up I'm gonna get Johnny.

Speaker A

Depp so what are we doing now we're it called USL cup that sponsored.

Speaker C

By Prinks tires what is they said it in nauseam so it's stuck in.

Speaker A

My head what is Prince Tires have have you ever seen a Prince tire?

Speaker C

No, I've never heard of it unlike.

Speaker B

Jagermeister it sounds like a really weird alcohol.

Speaker A

We went from an alcohol to a a thing that you're not supposed to be driving while you're drinking alcohol.

Speaker A

So I think we're in group six this is round one and we're up at Loudoun is a look like a rainy night what was the general thoughts on the match?

Speaker C

Decent.

Speaker C

General thoughts not great decent we got the result which was great but decent at best.

Speaker A

Patrick?

Speaker B

Yeah I would think just lackluster I mean coming off that and we just talked about it that Rhode island match maybe hoping for a little more and kind of not doing anything to stand out just one one a game that could literally go either way while you watch it and it's not exciting having one of those our road.

Speaker A

Our road numbers aren't very good you know why I mean we we start let's talk about starting 11 any surprises on there.

Speaker B

I would say I was surprised Joey started after the last game at center back I thought maybe we we would see a switch there.

Speaker B

Yeah I I get why you keep playing playing them you know but it is a cup game so I would have maybe expected switch it up a little bit be a little more solid at the back and they didn't do that so that was my surprise.

Speaker A

Andrew.

Speaker C

Surprises in the starting 11 were Miguel Barry honestly why he hasn't he's.

Speaker C

He hasn't showed us why he came to Charleston yet in my opinion like he's had some no actually that was his first goal in the 16th minute, like he's played and he stood out in some games, but he hasn't really delivered yet.

Speaker C

And so in a cup match, I was like, let's get maybe shake it up a little bit.

Speaker C

We have Colton Swann.

Speaker C

Let's give him a spot.

Speaker C

Yeah, let's let him have a shot.

Speaker C

And that was my surprise.

Speaker C

Just out based on performance of late.

Speaker B

A little.

Speaker B

A little surprised as well that Kirill didn't get to start.

Speaker B

Yeah, I think he's just been really good, kind of getting into a groove more and more and I don't know.

Speaker B

I like seeing him out there.

Speaker B

I like the height.

Speaker B

I like what he adds.

Speaker B

I like his defensive work ethic.

Speaker B

And he's just a player that I really like to.

Speaker B

I like to see and I enjoy when he plays.

Speaker A

So what about our keeper?

Speaker A

We can.

Speaker A

We've talked about Zamudio and now we get to see Burner come out there.

Speaker A

Did he.

Speaker C

Yeah.

Speaker A

Did he play well?

Speaker A

Did he not play well?

Speaker C

We played pretty decent.

Speaker C

He made a few saves.

Speaker C

Some of them were kind of gimmes, though.

Speaker C

Like straight Adam.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker C

But he made like one or two.

Speaker C

That was like.

Speaker B

Okay.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker B

I mean, the.

Speaker B

We can't say the gimmes are always gimmes though, too, with our other situations.

Speaker B

So I think he did really well for even getting shot directly at to not just somehow dive out and let it go.

Speaker C

Yeah, that's fair.

Speaker A

Okay, so we had also Sean Suber at the back.

Speaker A

Do you think he's looking a little more natural as a back than moving him up as we've seen him as center mid?

Speaker B

I mean, he played more so in center mid.

Speaker B

So I don't think he really, like.

Speaker A

I don't.

Speaker B

It's going to be the question of the year until there's something solidifies.

Speaker B

I don't know, like you bought defender of the year and doesn't play defense for us.

Speaker B

So I'm just.

Speaker B

I have no idea what's happening.

Speaker B

And I. I mean, it's.

Speaker B

It's just a weird situation to me that we don't at least see him change positions a little more aggressively in like for instance, the pranks tire cup match.

Speaker A

Mean, like put him up there in Barry's position.

Speaker B

I don't know, do something like.

Speaker B

I, I just.

Speaker B

This is how many games in that he plays this CDM role and he's just.

Speaker B

It's not really gelling, so it's not convincing.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

Maybe throw him in center back for a couple matches, get his groove back.

Speaker B

Maybe all that confidence because he will Ball out in center back.

Speaker B

He'll destroy everyone.

Speaker B

He'll be the rock back there.

Speaker B

But build this guy's confidence back up to push him back up into CDM and let him go forward from that.

Speaker B

I think he just needs a switch up.

Speaker B

Benching him didn't work.

Speaker A

No.

Speaker B

So.

Speaker A

Do you think maybe he just needs a better midfield to help support him when he's playing cdm?

Speaker A

I mean, we got a pretty strong midfield.

Speaker B

You have Landry next to you.

Speaker B

That's awesome.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

What else do you need?

Speaker C

Yeah, Landry is pretty rock solid.

Speaker A

So the other person that you know, mess are always killing it and Kelly's always killing it.

Speaker A

Not always, but they're doing a fantastic job.

Speaker A

Is Martinez, Is he kind of up and down?

Speaker A

Are we seeing sometimes the great Martinez and other times not so great Martinez,.

Speaker C

Yes, his performance in the game was decent, but knowing what he can do it, it was a little lackluster.

Speaker C

Yeah, that would be my take on Martinez.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker B

I feel like between him, Blackstock and Foster, I mean Foster seems like he's breaking out a little more from time to time.

Speaker B

But between those three, someone you would expect one of them to step up and kind of be the go to guy who's going to be continuously getting picked.

Speaker B

But I don't know it, to me it seems like it's another one fresh out of preseason where you're not really sure, like, oh, let's rotate again.

Speaker B

I'll rotate these three guys, I'll play one of them, I'll get one off the bench and one will just have to wait until the next match.

Speaker B

And I don't know, it's definitely on the players.

Speaker B

I want them to put a little more effort in and go at a guy show why you should be starting these matches.

Speaker B

Be the difference maker, especially for attackers.

Speaker A

How important do you think this match was for not just the USL cup, but setting us up for our next couple matches in the usl Starting Saturday.

Speaker C

Sets us up pretty good to build back confidence after back back horrible losses.

Speaker C

In my opinion, if we can have the result on the road coming back home Saturday, no problem.

Speaker C

That's my opinion.

Speaker C

It'll help build that confidence back up that I'm sure got lost after.

Speaker C

What was it, a 3 nil loss.

Speaker C

40 Loss.

Speaker C

Back to back.

Speaker A

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker C

Those, those staying.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker B

And like you mentioned, Barry being a surprise to start.

Speaker B

It's about damn time he gets a goal and this could be what starts his season off in the positive direction.

Speaker B

Like maybe get him off the mark in the championship and then Get a little run of form going where Colton Swan isn't going to be starting some starting not.

Speaker B

He's just going to be the bench guy now.

Speaker B

So I think for certain players I, I thought this game was better.

Speaker B

Just personally, overall I'm with you guys like eh.

Speaker B

But personally I think Barry needed this.

Speaker B

I thought Akaza had a pretty decent game as well.

Speaker B

I mean his shot at the end led to the corner which led to the game winner.

Speaker B

I think it's good for the coaching staff and the coaches to be like, look, all that hard work, keep fighting, it paid off.

Speaker B

We got the game winner, extra time.

Speaker B

But I just want to see some difference makers.

Speaker B

I want to see people go create and make the space and make a name for yourself.

Speaker B

This is the stage to do it.

Speaker A

Let's talk about that.

Speaker A

Because we lack that kind of creativity, it seems like.

Speaker C

Yes.

Speaker A

Is that creativity, Is that from an attacking player or is that creativity needs to come from a midfielder, A number eight?

Speaker A

Where does that need to come from?

Speaker A

And who's going to be that player?

Speaker C

Yakaza.

Speaker C

He's our captain.

Speaker C

He should be running the midfield.

Speaker C

And I'm wearing a petri kit today.

Speaker C

Midfielders control the game in my opinion.

Speaker C

So we just need someone in the midfield to step up.

Speaker C

And I think Yokosa could be that guy just always finding the pass, fighting a little extra harder with possession.

Speaker C

Just.

Speaker C

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker B

Just more right.

Speaker B

I mean he's our starting eight.

Speaker B

You would expect a guy.

Speaker C

Yes.

Speaker B

To be like not fill Malloy's shoes, but do something with like possess the ball.

Speaker B

Look for that through ball to guys.

Speaker B

I mean Barry's goal came from a defender just launching it at him.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

Because we were in a 2v2 situation.

Speaker B

I mean I like it.

Speaker B

I like switching the play up a little bit from time to time.

Speaker B

Too many games we see the battery just want to knock it around and eventually get exposed by a bad pass.

Speaker B

So I'm all for like, you see that ball, play it.

Speaker B

But we should be getting a lot more chances from offensive creativity, especially with our midfielders.

Speaker B

I mean do they just look like they have to hunker to their positions?

Speaker B

Like there's no overlapping with previous teams that we used to see.

Speaker B

No switching.

Speaker B

No.

Speaker B

Like, hey, just stay centrally for a minute.

Speaker B

I'll go cover your wing or I'll drop back for a minute.

Speaker B

Like are we just too early in the season for that or do you think we just don't have those players?

Speaker A

I'm getting to think we don't have those players.

Speaker C

I think as A combination.

Speaker C

We don't have that players.

Speaker C

And the players also are still.

Speaker C

They just seem like they have.

Speaker C

They're not cohesive yet, especially on the road.

Speaker C

On the road, the whole playbook goes off the window and it's just like scramble and figure it out.

Speaker B

What's.

Speaker B

What's the solution?

Speaker B

Are we.

Speaker B

Are we supposed to do a Airbnb one house together?

Speaker B

No more individual hotel rooms?

Speaker C

I don't know.

Speaker C

I think it's just gonna take the hard work and dedication from them and then just one game where they all just lock in and they're like, okay.

Speaker C

But I don't know, it just seems like, in my opinion, that they're not fully, you know, one yet.

Speaker C

I. I don't.

Speaker A

But how does the road expose that?

Speaker A

Say they're not jailed 100%.

Speaker A

Why does it.

Speaker A

Why are our road matches exposing that weakness or even call it so drastically?

Speaker A

Because it's not like we're going places and losing, you know, one nil.

Speaker A

We're getting blasted.

Speaker C

Why.

Speaker A

Why is it so different?

Speaker B

Maybe atmosphere plays a little bit into it, but I think the big missing structure is that main focal point on the field, that leader on the field.

Speaker B

No one's honestly stepped up and became that role since Malloy left.

Speaker B

Yeah, like, Malloy was that guy.

Speaker B

He can bring the group together.

Speaker B

Let's go.

Speaker B

Give me the ball.

Speaker B

I'll start it off.

Speaker B

That leader that leads by example.

Speaker B

We hear it so often, modern football.

Speaker B

You don't have to have these guys shouting all the time, but they lead by example.

Speaker B

Well, we don't have anyone on the field doing that currently.

Speaker B

Just taking the ball and being like, hey, I'll put the team on my back for a minute.

Speaker B

Two minute spell here.

Speaker B

I will work my ass off and move around and keep possession.

Speaker B

Play 1, 2 balls with you guys something.

Speaker B

So I think that's where we're kind of falling apart.

Speaker B

We're just missing that guy who takes it all on himself for a couple minutes when we really need it.

Speaker B

And I think we're.

Speaker B

We're seeing it a lot more that Malloy was that glue.

Speaker B

More so than we gave him credit for.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

Do you think maybe.

Speaker A

Is it.

Speaker C

Is it.

Speaker A

I don't want.

Speaker A

I don't want to say that because I cause a fantastic player and he's a fantastic person and he brings a lot of energy.

Speaker A

Is he not that leader that you just described?

Speaker B

I mean, he's taken a back seat for so long.

Speaker C

Right.

Speaker B

I mean, it's kind of hard to be like, now it's on you if you're not that guy.

Speaker B

I think leaders are just leaders.

Speaker B

I mean, you may have someone else with the captain's armband, but you're still going to be on that pitch leading.

Speaker C

And he.

Speaker B

He wasn't like a consistent.

Speaker B

Getting all that game time before when Malloy was here, he was kind of a rotation player.

Speaker B

Really bad games, some really good games, but like subbing off.

Speaker B

So I don't know.

Speaker B

I just.

Speaker B

I think he's a great player.

Speaker B

I just don't think he is that on pitch leader that this team needs and this team requires this.

Speaker A

I think that's a very fair analysis because I don't want to disparage him because I think he brings a.

Speaker A

So much to the team and, and he spans what he's been with us four years now, I think.

Speaker A

And yeah, and I think what he brings is fantastic because we need that at times.

Speaker A

But you might be right.

Speaker A

Maybe.

Speaker A

Maybe we need a little bit different leadership profile.

Speaker C

I have one on my mind.

Speaker C

He's been a standout player and like, he even had a really big game against Loud, but he's a defensive player, so that's fine.

Speaker C

Graham Smith.

Speaker A

Do you think Graham Smith's the guy?

Speaker C

He has been playing his heart out like this has been like.

Speaker C

He's playing like he wants defender of the year again.

Speaker C

And what.

Speaker C

What match was it where it was the Tampa Bay game.

Speaker C

That one tackle he got, the second tackle he got inside the box.

Speaker C

He was.

Speaker C

He felt it like he was hyping the crowd up.

Speaker C

He was.

Speaker C

Everybody might be the guy.

Speaker A

Yeah, everybody felt that one.

Speaker C

Yeah.

Speaker A

Maybe that's a good shout out because he scored this time, did he not?

Speaker C

He scored the winner.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

So, you know, leading on both ends.

Speaker A

So let's.

Speaker A

Let's switch back to McGill's goal.

Speaker A

Thoughts on his footwork in the box?

Speaker A

Bad defending?

Speaker C

No, it was good defending.

Speaker C

It was excellent footwork.

Speaker C

He slid past not one, but two defenders and then the keeper and just tapped it in.

Speaker C

It was.

Speaker C

It was a fantastic goal.

Speaker C

I was like, yes, more of that, please.

Speaker C

More.

Speaker C

More of that.

Speaker A

Is that his forte?

Speaker A

We just put him in amongst the play, amongst other defenders and just let him dribble his way out.

Speaker B

Maybe as long as they're a little smaller and he can body them off.

Speaker C

Yes, because M is a big dude.

Speaker B

That just shows you he wasn't leaving it in the ref sands for some cheeky foul call or pen.

Speaker B

Stay on your feet, kids.

Speaker B

Finish.

Speaker A

He did.

Speaker A

Because I think.

Speaker A

I think other players might have went down because I think there Was a touch.

Speaker A

I think when he got past two defender, somebody swip swiped at his leg and he kind of stumbled a little bit.

Speaker A

But I think that he stayed up on his feet and finished it up really well.

Speaker A

Other players I think might have went down.

Speaker A

Not saying our players, but other, other players though.

Speaker B

And kudos to Barry too.

Speaker B

Or Cabrera.

Speaker B

Yeah, drawing.

Speaker B

Trying to draw the defender away, but the defender went to double and he held into these spaces for a pass.

Speaker B

I mean Miguel had it in his eyes he wasn't giving that ball up.

Speaker A

Attacker.

Speaker A

Right.

Speaker A

So that's.

Speaker B

And then he's.

Speaker B

He's not shrugging.

Speaker B

He goes and celebrates, throws his hands up immediately with him.

Speaker B

So like that's really good for a teammate, creating that space in those passing lanes.

Speaker B

If he were to knee it too often.

Speaker B

We've seen it before where guys just kind of like stand next to their guy like, oh well he's going.

Speaker B

So yeah, I'll jog up here with him and stuff but I'm not really going to separate.

Speaker B

So I thought he did excellent on that play even though he got no reward for it.

Speaker A

So Andre and I were talking about it's nice to watch a match a second time, especially when you know the results of it.

Speaker A

So that way you can look at a lot of the off the ball play.

Speaker A

And that's just what you described.

Speaker A

So you might miss it when you're watching it live because you're focused on, you know, the ball, where it's at, footwork, stuff like that.

Speaker A

So you don't necessarily watch all the off the ball play.

Speaker A

But that is so key.

Speaker A

So key off the ball play.

Speaker A

Getting like you said, pulling defenders away or having that option open.

Speaker A

So everyone has to play honest and he needs to keep that up.

Speaker A

That's what his gig is.

Speaker A

We need a lot more of that gig.

Speaker C

Someone who's been doing a lot of that is.

Speaker C

Well, he.

Speaker C

Now he's more been creating chances.

Speaker C

He's Messer, but I can't pronounce his name.

Speaker C

The Russian dude.

Speaker C

Yes.

Speaker C

When he comes on or starts, he's kind of getting into spaces and creating a lot of chances.

Speaker A

I don't know how he's getting into space because he's a big, huge son of a.

Speaker A

And so.

Speaker C

Yeah, I know.

Speaker A

Or maybe just.

Speaker A

Maybe just get the hell out of his way.

Speaker A

Like, okay, you have that space.

Speaker C

When he came on for Loudon, it was, it was just like the defenders from Loudon just had one extra job that they really couldn't handle.

Speaker B

Yeah, I mean it's tough Enough having to guard Messer's ass, who's just running up and down and getting crosses in and just playing like a madman half the game.

Speaker A

Damn kids, right?

Speaker C

To have that energy.

Speaker A

Ah, let's see.

Speaker A

Accurate passes he had 25, 34.

Speaker A

This I'm talking about Messer.

Speaker A

49 Touches, passes into initial final third five.

Speaker A

Oh, he's sucking.

Speaker A

Zero accurate crosses out of six off game for him.

Speaker C

Devil's advocate to that though.

Speaker C

It's.

Speaker C

Even though they're not accurate, he's still the guy that's creating the most chances.

Speaker A

He's making the danger.

Speaker B

Yeah, yeah, he's allowed to have one off game.

Speaker A

I'll give him this accuracy.

Speaker A

Especially with.

Speaker A

With.

Speaker A

What's the name of this?

Speaker A

The Prince Tire Cup.

Speaker C

Yeah, Prince Tires Cup.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker A

What do you think the trophy's gonna look like?

Speaker B

It's just a tire.

Speaker B

One tire.

Speaker C

Yeah.

Speaker A

White walls in or out?

Speaker A

Have you ever had that?

Speaker C

Don't have a spinner on it.

Speaker A

So on a more serious note, have you ever your rides, you ride with white walls in or out?

Speaker B

No.

Speaker B

White walls out.

Speaker A

Do you really.

Speaker A

What, what made, what made you go with that decision?

Speaker B

It's a regular Joe man flaunting around town, showing off.

Speaker A

One time I sent my, my Jeep to the shop with somebody else driving it to get new tires, come back with white walls out.

Speaker A

And I was horrified.

Speaker A

Almost led to a divorce.

Speaker A

Oh my.

Speaker A

You know how long it takes to scrub that white wall?

Speaker A

I'm just kidding.

Speaker A

Okay, let's so talk about Messer.

Speaker A

Let's talk about that last goal and come in it with the 80 something minute.

Speaker B

90 Something.

Speaker A

Not, I mean 90 something.

Speaker C

93Rd.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

So let's talk about, let's talk about Graham Smith just in general.

Speaker A

His, his playing, what he provided the other night.

Speaker A

Is he back?

Speaker A

Because he kind of had some down matches that now we've seen.

Speaker A

He's strung together Tampa Bay.

Speaker A

He was really strong as we discussed ad nauseam dirt about Rhode Island.

Speaker A

You know, there might have been some weak points, but we, we don't need to dwell on those like we did in that part of the podcast.

Speaker A

But is this another one where he's.

Speaker A

He's stepping up there and leading from the.

Speaker A

As a center back?

Speaker C

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker C

He was just always in the right spot and like he had one where it was a cross coming in, but it looked like it also could have went in coming from the side and he just headed it away like he was just in the right spot and made some good tackles.

Speaker C

He did get carded, if I remember.

Speaker C

Right.

Speaker C

Like something like in the 70th minute something.

Speaker C

But at that point I felt like ref was kind of card heavy.

Speaker C

Like he was handing out cards for nothing.

Speaker A

Well, he thought it was discount cards for tires.

Speaker C

But yeah, he was just always in the right spot and he's playing with passion and he's trying to get his team involved more and he's trying to lead that back line.

Speaker A

Is that, is that, is that captain material leaving?

Speaker C

Yeah, potentially.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

And of course the one week we don't do predictions for the next match.

Speaker B

I think I predicted a center back scoring every time.

Speaker A

I think so.

Speaker A

That's what you get.

Speaker B

Yeah, but that's why I predict it.

Speaker B

Because you have guys like this who when they turn their switch on and they're going, they can be the difference maker.

Speaker B

Doesn't have to be a striker.

Speaker B

It doesn't have to be your attacking mid or your up wingers, whoever they are at that time.

Speaker B

It can be your center back coming forward and nodding it in.

Speaker B

We saw it time and time again with Leland when he played for us.

Speaker B

He can make that difference.

Speaker B

And I think that is one thing that I do respect Pyramid on probably the most is he gets that out of all his players of it's not just on this one guy.

Speaker B

He's our star.

Speaker B

Feed him the ball religiously.

Speaker B

Anyone can make that difference.

Speaker B

It could be any person on any night.

Speaker B

It's just whoever wants it more and who's hungry.

Speaker B

And Graham Smith is doing it now.

Speaker B

So it's.

Speaker B

It's what we need to be honest.

Speaker B

We need a vocal leader, a field leader, someone who can do it on both ends.

Speaker B

Exactly what we described for captaincy or just someone to rally the troops.

Speaker B

There's your starter right there.

Speaker B

There's your number one spot.

Speaker B

Who should be getting it now?

Speaker A

I would.

Speaker A

I'll tell you.

Speaker A

I like captains that are the, the kind of the calm, cool characters and I kind of like them being.

Speaker A

Being more defensive minded.

Speaker A

I don't know why.

Speaker A

It just seems like when you have leaders behind watching the play in front of you, they can add a lot more to just that calming voice versus high energy all the time.

Speaker A

But that's just me.

Speaker C

Are we also a little like biased because we had a center back as captain for so long?

Speaker C

That's just like could be.

Speaker C

It feels a little weird having a midfield of offensive player like.

Speaker C

But I. Graham Smith is just like every, every game I leave I'm just like Smith had a pretty decent game.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker C

Like he's the first player that comes to my head like every time I think of like who had the best performance is what I am trying to say.

Speaker B

I mean you even allude to it with the Tampa game.

Speaker B

We don't get the win.

Speaker B

But we damn sure may not have gotten a draw if it wasn't for Graham Smith.

Speaker B

So even in matches where we escape with a point or even if we lose like he still is someone out there preventing more and more goals from going in.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

And we.

Speaker A

We have to have a strong defense and that's what we've always.

Speaker A

That's the advantage we've had over the last couple years is our defensive has been a wall and our weakness has always been about scoring goals.

Speaker A

Kind of in my view.

Speaker A

And this year it's a little bit twist on it.

Speaker A

But we're not scoring the goals.

Speaker C

Yeah.

Speaker A

But so we.

Speaker A

I think we still need a strong defense because we're not the over the top type of team that keeps putting the ball over top when we start doing that.

Speaker A

But this seemed a little bit different.

Speaker B

It's also a very good issue for Pyramid to have if we are tied going into extra time.

Speaker B

You get a corner kick and you have the opportunity.

Speaker B

You have one of these tall ass dudes, defender, whoever on the bench sub them on.

Speaker B

You might just grab a goal.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

You don't have to send the keeper up to try and get it.

Speaker B

Put.

Speaker B

Put one of your six, four, six, five guys out there.

Speaker A

But didn't it when that headed ball from the corner off Joey and then up near.

Speaker A

Then he put looped it over the keeper.

Speaker C

The Graham goal.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker C

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker C

That's how it happened.

Speaker A

So we got our two tall guys just batting around with their four hits.

Speaker C

It was a good overall it was a good corner.

Speaker C

Like the delivery from Yakaza was pretty good.

Speaker C

And then it had to pretty much go back into the middle.

Speaker C

There was no angle for his header.

Speaker C

So he sent it back to Graham and Graham just loaded it in.

Speaker C

It was.

Speaker C

It was.

Speaker C

It was good.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker B

We don't have to have the perfect corner but if it goes in we're great.

Speaker B

Right?

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

Smart thinking by Joey.

Speaker B

Just get it back into one of your guys.

Speaker A

Just put it back in the grinder.

Speaker A

Right.

Speaker A

And it was kind of a strange.

Speaker A

I don't say stranger but I like that it looped over and it wasn't.

Speaker A

Didn't have a lot of energy coming to Graham.

Speaker A

It didn't seem like it was not in slow motion.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

It's just what it appeared to be.

Speaker A

I'll take that.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker A

Anything else?

Speaker A

We Want to talk about with the last match of the not Jaegermeister.

Speaker A

Formerly known as Jaegermeister now the Pringles tires Cup Prince.

Speaker A

Is it Prince Pranks.

Speaker A

Pranks.

Speaker A

Pricks.

Speaker A

Princess.

Speaker A

No.

Speaker A

Okay, fair enough.

Speaker C

Yeah, I'm good.

Speaker B

Excited to be back home.

Speaker B

Get to watch it live.

Speaker A

Let's talk, let's talk about that sporting Jacksonville and I'm looking at the table.

Speaker B

And so you got scroll, scroll.

Speaker A

I did, I did.

Speaker A

I got all the way at the bottom and then it's just.

Speaker A

I don't know, maybe it's my computer is acting up with just a whole string of Ls next to them.

Speaker C

Aren't they an expansion club this year?

Speaker C

Like brand new?

Speaker A

I guess so.

Speaker A

They suck.

Speaker A

Let me tell you.

Speaker A

Well, I don't know.

Speaker A

I. I say I'll.

Speaker A

I'll take that back.

Speaker B

I'll.

Speaker A

I'll make that pronouncement after Saturday nights.

Speaker C

I would wait till Saturday.

Speaker A

Let's the roller coaster we've been on.

Speaker A

Yeah that's.

Speaker B

Don't bring up Brooklyn.

Speaker B

Don't bring up Brooklyn and their roller coasters.

Speaker B

Absurd.

Speaker A

That's fantastic.

Speaker A

Yes.

Speaker A

I didn't think about that.

Speaker A

We were on a roller coaster.

Speaker A

So we, we do well against top table teams.

Speaker A

We don't do so well against lower table teams.

Speaker A

And this is the lowest of the low you can get here.

Speaker A

Seven matches played, zero wins, one draw, six losses, Gold district a difference of negative nine.

Speaker A

They have one point.

Speaker A

What do we do?

Speaker C

I'm trying to look them up now so that I can see who all.

Speaker B

They've played all gas, no break.

Speaker B

Oh put a few people up top.

Speaker B

Just go for it.

Speaker C

To be fair to their.

Speaker C

I'm just looking at their last five games.

Speaker C

Pittsburgh, Robert Rowdies, Detroit, Louisville and Miami.

Speaker A

Yikes.

Speaker A

I just got look at that too.

Speaker A

Like let's not talk about it.

Speaker C

They may be losing a lot, but it looks like they're playing all firepower.

Speaker B

So.

Speaker A

So look at played River Hounds.

Speaker A

They lost three, two.

Speaker A

So it's a one goal difference.

Speaker A

They played Tampa Bay, lost one nil.

Speaker A

They play Detroit City, lost one nil.

Speaker A

They played Louisville, they lost one nil.

Speaker C

It's a little worse than that.

Speaker C

They can hold like Tampa Bay, Louisville to one goal.

Speaker A

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A

Maybe they just let off on it.

Speaker A

Maybe they said and they're expansion team.

Speaker A

We're just going to score one goal and then just not play anymore.

Speaker A

Okay, goal predictions.

Speaker C

I think Miguel will score another one.

Speaker C

I think he finally has because after that goal like that was a performance and a morale booster for sure.

Speaker C

Because it was, it was nice.

Speaker C

And probably another corner because we've been having results off corners and I would just predict one of the tall guys just getting a little bit extra height and hitting one in.

Speaker C

It's a toss up.

Speaker C

It could be anybody.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker B

I'm gonna go with one nil.

Speaker B

And hopefully Landry just hits a rocket on the edge of the box.

Speaker B

Low rocket, rocket.

Speaker B

I. I just want to keep a clean sheet.

Speaker A

Yes.

Speaker B

First and foremost we need to start doing that.

Speaker B

We need to get our heads behind us on that thing.

Speaker B

So let's keep a clean sheet and maybe we nab one, but you never know.

Speaker B

Maybe this is our breakout game where guys start getting it together and we get a couple.

Speaker B

So let's hope for that.

Speaker B

But I'll predict 1 0.

Speaker A

I was hoping that was Louisville.

Speaker A

It's the breakout gain.

Speaker C

That was a very good performance.

Speaker C

That two note win in the road.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

That we looked like a team.

Speaker A

I guess the good thing about that is we know what we're capable of.

Speaker A

We just haven't been able to replicate that.

Speaker A

Hopefully we can start replicating that.

Speaker A

What I'm trying to do before I give my prediction to see what the weather's going to be on Saturday night.

Speaker B

It'll be all right.

Speaker C

It's supposed to stop raining around 6 o'.

Speaker B

Clock, so yeah, it's going to be a little chillier than usual.

Speaker B

Not 90 degrees, but that's it.

Speaker C

65 Should be a nice, nice.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker C

Nice switch up.

Speaker C

Especially in May.

Speaker A

I have a wet field, little damp,.

Speaker B

You can warm up with all the Cinco de Mayo hot sauce.

Speaker B

Pop it on your tacos for Cinco de Mayo night.

Speaker B

Stay warm.

Speaker B

Toasty.

Speaker B

Get out there, get a Modelo.

Speaker C

And I'm not bringing the kids.

Speaker C

It's just gonna be me and the wife.

Speaker A

Oh, romance.

Speaker B

I thought you were gonna say it's just gonna be me and the tacos.

Speaker A

Well, it will just be me and the tacos.

Speaker A

My wife is going off somewhere hither and yawn and leaving me to my own devices.

Speaker A

And as she told my son, my son tells her, mom, you're leaving me here all alone with no adult supervision.

Speaker B

Smart kid.

Speaker A

Yeah, smart kid.

Speaker A

So humidity is supposed to be in the 90 percentile, but it looks like, like you said, temperature.

Speaker A

I have to bust out the warm weather gear again.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker C

I'm gonna go in May.

Speaker C

That's shocking, right?

Speaker A

I'm gonna go with two nil.

Speaker A

I mean two one.

Speaker A

Leaky leaky goalie.

Speaker A

Leaky leaky goalie.

Speaker B

Who knows, Maybe get a switch up and goal for once.

Speaker A

I hope so.

Speaker B

Not a cup game switch up, but a real switch up.

Speaker A

Maybe it's time to maybe let somebody ponder.

Speaker A

See on the other side of the.

Speaker A

On the bench for a regular match.

Speaker A

Any other surprises?

Speaker A

Can you wear May 4th regalia on May 2nd?

Speaker B

Oh, yeah, absolutely.

Speaker B

The.

Speaker B

The Battery already said it's going to be their sponsored night.

Speaker B

So full of fun festivities.

Speaker B

They had a few.

Speaker A

Is it a May 4 thing?

Speaker A

As may the 4th be with you, may the 2nd de Mayo be with you.

Speaker B

I mean, it's like more of a May 5th thing.

Speaker B

The May 4th thing.

Speaker B

I've.

Speaker B

I've.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

You could tell how much I watch Star wars, so my mind is on tacos margaritas,.

Speaker A

Not on Jabba the Hood.

Speaker B

I'm gonna leave my pristine high tower seats to go sit in the smoke and the drums.

Speaker A

No, you're gonna.

Speaker A

You're gonna slum with us people down in the poor section.

Speaker B

Yeah, for a few minutes.

Speaker B

I might go back.

Speaker B

You never know.

Speaker B

Keep your options open.

Speaker A

Are you bringing.

Speaker A

Are you bringing your crew with you?

Speaker A

You bringing.

Speaker A

You know, your.

Speaker B

My crew has good set bed times now, so we'll not be breaking that.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker A

Or we're gonna be in trouble.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker A

Kickoff is, I think, is it seven?

Speaker A

Is that correct?

Speaker C

Seven o'.

Speaker C

Clock.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

And Patriots point.

Speaker A

Everybody's listening to us, all 12 of you.

Speaker A

That's including myself, Andrew and Patrick.

Speaker A

So, yeah, 12 of us fight your friends.

Speaker A

Let's have a good time.

Speaker B

See you down there.

Speaker B

Doors open.

Speaker B

Well, gates open.

Speaker B

Fire.

Speaker B

5:30 Parking lots.

Speaker B

And yeah, they said everything should be clear from the air show.

Speaker B

So get down early.

Speaker B

Let's have a little fiesta celebration.

Speaker A

Let's do.

Speaker C

I will be down there early, especially.

Speaker A

With the cool weather because we might not get another match where it's not like 90 degrees walking into it.

Speaker A

So be good time.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker C

I'll actually get the tailgate because we won't have the kids.

Speaker A

Yeah, that'd be good.

Speaker A

That's all I have.

Speaker C

That's all I got.

Speaker A

Patrick, do you have anything else for the good of the order?

Speaker B

No, I'll just add my dad.

Speaker B

Dad.

Speaker B

Two cents.

Speaker B

But this rain, we really needed it.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

No, I knew it was gonna happen because I started watering my lawn and I was like, as soon as I start doing that, that's when the rain's coming.

Speaker B

But we should wash your car.

Speaker B

Easiest way to get it to rain.

Speaker A

Yeah, I guess.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker A

Gentlemen.

Speaker A

Andrew, thanks for joining us.

Speaker A

We'll have you back again.

Speaker C

No problem.

Speaker C

Thank you.

Speaker A

Appreciate it.

Speaker A

And that's it.

Speaker A

We'll see you Saturday.

Speaker A

Bye.

Speaker C

Later.

Speaker A

We are the fleet, as if we will sink.

Speaker C

But we, we are the battle ra.
