Two girls matches and there's this one girl and she's just a beast and she just runs Both halves, they're 25 minute halves and at the end I do some sprints just so I can keep my old man but kind of from dying.

And she always, at the end she goes, hey ref, I'll race you.

So we race the race the half and again she's beaten me every time except for the time I cheated and started running then said go.

So kudos to the young lady that can beat me in the foot race.

She should let you win.

Yeah I would think just lackluster I mean coming off that and we just talked about it that Rhode island match maybe hoping for a little more and kind of not doing anything to stand out just one one a game that could literally go either way while you watch it and it's not exciting having one of those our road.

Our road numbers aren't very good you know why I mean we we start let's talk about starting 11 any surprises on there.

I would say I was surprised Joey started after the last game at center back I thought maybe we we would see a switch there.

Yeah I I get why you keep playing playing them you know but it is a cup game so I would have maybe expected switch it up a little bit be a little more solid at the back and they didn't do that so that was my surprise.

Surprises in the starting 11 were Miguel Barry honestly why he hasn't he's.

He hasn't showed us why he came to Charleston yet in my opinion like he's had some no actually that was his first goal in the 16th minute, like he's played and he stood out in some games, but he hasn't really delivered yet.

And so in a cup match, I was like, let's get maybe shake it up a little bit.

We have Colton Swann.

Let's give him a spot.

And that was my surprise.

Just out based on performance of late.

A little surprised as well that Kirill didn't get to start.

Yeah, I think he's just been really good, kind of getting into a groove more and more and I don't know.

I like seeing him out there.

I like what he adds.

I like his defensive work ethic.

And he's just a player that I really like to.

I like to see and I enjoy when he plays.

So what about our keeper?

We can.

We've talked about Zamudio and now we get to see Burner come out there.

We played pretty decent.

He made a few saves.

Some of them were kind of gimmes, though.

So I think he did really well for even getting shot directly at to not just somehow dive out and let it go.

Do you think he's looking a little more natural as a back than moving him up as we've seen him as center mid?

I mean, he played more so in center mid.

So I don't think he really, like.

I don't.

It's going to be the question of the year until there's something solidifies.

I don't know, like you bought defender of the year and doesn't play defense for us.

So I'm just.

I have no idea what's happening.

And I. I mean, it's.

It's just a weird situation to me that we don't at least see him change positions a little more aggressively in like for instance, the pranks tire cup match.

Mean, like put him up there in Barry's position.

I don't know, do something like.

This is how many games in that he plays this CDM role and he's just.

It's not really gelling, so it's not convincing.

Maybe throw him in center back for a couple matches, get his groove back.

Maybe all that confidence because he will Ball out in center back.

He'll destroy everyone.

He'll be the rock back there.

But build this guy's confidence back up to push him back up into CDM and let him go forward from that.

I think he just needs a switch up.

Benching him didn't work.

Do you think maybe he just needs a better midfield to help support him when he's playing cdm?

I mean, we got a pretty strong midfield.

You have Landry next to you.

That's awesome.

What else do you need?

Yeah, Landry is pretty rock solid.

So the other person that you know, mess are always killing it and Kelly's always killing it.

Not always, but they're doing a fantastic job.

Is Martinez, Is he kind of up and down?

Are we seeing sometimes the great Martinez and other times not so great Martinez,.

Yes, his performance in the game was decent, but knowing what he can do it, it was a little lackluster.

Yeah, that would be my take on Martinez.

Yeah.

I feel like between him, Blackstock and Foster, I mean Foster seems like he's breaking out a little more from time to time.

But between those three, someone you would expect one of them to step up and kind of be the go to guy who's going to be continuously getting picked.

But I don't know it, to me it seems like it's another one fresh out of preseason where you're not really sure, like, oh, let's rotate again.

I'll rotate these three guys, I'll play one of them, I'll get one off the bench and one will just have to wait until the next match.

And I don't know, it's definitely on the players.

I want them to put a little more effort in and go at a guy show why you should be starting these matches.

Be the difference maker, especially for attackers.

How important do you think this match was for not just the USL cup, but setting us up for our next couple matches in the usl Starting Saturday.

Sets us up pretty good to build back confidence after back back horrible losses.

In my opinion, if we can have the result on the road coming back home Saturday, no problem.

That's my opinion.

It'll help build that confidence back up that I'm sure got lost after.

What was it, a 3 nil loss.

And like you mentioned, Barry being a surprise to start.

It's about damn time he gets a goal and this could be what starts his season off in the positive direction.

Like maybe get him off the mark in the championship and then Get a little run of form going where Colton Swan isn't going to be starting some starting not.

He's just going to be the bench guy now.

So I think for certain players I, I thought this game was better.

Just personally, overall I'm with you guys like eh.

But personally I think Barry needed this.

I thought Akaza had a pretty decent game as well.

I mean his shot at the end led to the corner which led to the game winner.

I think it's good for the coaching staff and the coaches to be like, look, all that hard work, keep fighting, it paid off.

We got the game winner, extra time.

But I just want to see some difference makers.

I want to see people go create and make the space and make a name for yourself.

This is the stage to do it.

Let's talk about that.

Because we lack that kind of creativity, it seems like.

Is that creativity, Is that from an attacking player or is that creativity needs to come from a midfielder, A number eight?

Where does that need to come from?

And who's going to be that player?

He's our captain.

He should be running the midfield.

And I'm wearing a petri kit today.

Midfielders control the game in my opinion.

So we just need someone in the midfield to step up.

And I think Yokosa could be that guy just always finding the pass, fighting a little extra harder with possession.

I mean he's our starting eight.

You would expect a guy.

To be like not fill Malloy's shoes, but do something with like possess the ball.

Look for that through ball to guys.

I mean Barry's goal came from a defender just launching it at him.

I mean I like it.

I like switching the play up a little bit from time to time.

Too many games we see the battery just want to knock it around and eventually get exposed by a bad pass.

So I'm all for like, you see that ball, play it.

But we should be getting a lot more chances from offensive creativity, especially with our midfielders.

I mean do they just look like they have to hunker to their positions?

Like there's no overlapping with previous teams that we used to see.

No switching.

Like, hey, just stay centrally for a minute.

I'll go cover your wing or I'll drop back for a minute.

Like are we just too early in the season for that or do you think we just don't have those players?

I'm getting to think we don't have those players.

I think as A combination.

We don't have that players.

And the players also are still.

They just seem like they have.

They're not cohesive yet, especially on the road.

On the road, the whole playbook goes off the window and it's just like scramble and figure it out.

I think it's just gonna take the hard work and dedication from them and then just one game where they all just lock in and they're like, okay.

But I don't know, it just seems like, in my opinion, that they're not fully, you know, one yet.

But how does the road expose that?

Say they're not jailed 100%.

Why are our road matches exposing that weakness or even call it so drastically?

Because it's not like we're going places and losing, you know, one nil.

We're getting blasted.

Maybe atmosphere plays a little bit into it, but I think the big missing structure is that main focal point on the field, that leader on the field.

No one's honestly stepped up and became that role since Malloy left.

Yeah, like, Malloy was that guy.

He can bring the group together.

That leader that leads by example.

We hear it so often, modern football.

You don't have to have these guys shouting all the time, but they lead by example.

Well, we don't have anyone on the field doing that currently.

Just taking the ball and being like, hey, I'll put the team on my back for a minute.

I will work my ass off and move around and keep possession.

Play 1, 2 balls with you guys something.

So I think that's where we're kind of falling apart.

We're just missing that guy who takes it all on himself for a couple minutes when we really need it.

And I think we're.

We're seeing it a lot more that Malloy was that glue.

More so than we gave him credit for.

Do you think maybe.

I don't want.

I don't want to say that because I cause a fantastic player and he's a fantastic person and he brings a lot of energy.

Is he not that leader that you just described?

I mean, he's taken a back seat for so long.

Right.

I mean, it's kind of hard to be like, now it's on you if you're not that guy.

I think leaders are just leaders.

I mean, you may have someone else with the captain's armband, but you're still going to be on that pitch leading.

And he.

He wasn't like a consistent.

Getting all that game time before when Malloy was here, he was kind of a rotation player.

Really bad games, some really good games, but like subbing off.

So I don't know.

I just.

I think he's a great player.

I just don't think he is that on pitch leader that this team needs and this team requires this.

I think that's a very fair analysis because I don't want to disparage him because I think he brings a.

So much to the team and, and he spans what he's been with us four years now, I think.

And yeah, and I think what he brings is fantastic because we need that at times.

But you might be right.

Maybe.

Maybe we need a little bit different leadership profile.

He's been a standout player and like, he even had a really big game against Loud, but he's a defensive player, so that's fine.

Graham Smith.

Do you think Graham Smith's the guy?

He has been playing his heart out like this has been like.

He's playing like he wants defender of the year again.

What match was it where it was the Tampa Bay game.

That one tackle he got, the second tackle he got inside the box.

He was.

He felt it like he was hyping the crowd up.

Everybody might be the guy.

Yeah, everybody felt that one.

Maybe that's a good shout out because he scored this time, did he not?

He scored the winner.

So, you know, leading on both ends.

Thoughts on his footwork in the box?

Bad defending?

No, it was good defending.

It was excellent footwork.

He slid past not one, but two defenders and then the keeper and just tapped it in.

Is that his forte?

We just put him in amongst the play, amongst other defenders and just let him dribble his way out.

Maybe as long as they're a little smaller and he can body them off.

That just shows you he wasn't leaving it in the ref sands for some cheeky foul call or pen.

Stay on your feet, kids.

I think other players might have went down because I think there Was a touch.

I think when he got past two defender, somebody swip swiped at his leg and he kind of stumbled a little bit.

But I think that he stayed up on his feet and finished it up really well.

Other players I think might have went down.

Not saying our players, but other, other players though.

And kudos to Barry too.

Trying to draw the defender away, but the defender went to double and he held into these spaces for a pass.

I mean Miguel had it in his eyes he wasn't giving that ball up.

He goes and celebrates, throws his hands up immediately with him.

So like that's really good for a teammate, creating that space in those passing lanes.

If he were to knee it too often.

We've seen it before where guys just kind of like stand next to their guy like, oh well he's going.

So yeah, I'll jog up here with him and stuff but I'm not really going to separate.

So I thought he did excellent on that play even though he got no reward for it.

So Andre and I were talking about it's nice to watch a match a second time, especially when you know the results of it.

So that way you can look at a lot of the off the ball play.

And that's just what you described.

So you might miss it when you're watching it live because you're focused on, you know, the ball, where it's at, footwork, stuff like that.

So you don't necessarily watch all the off the ball play.

But that is so key.

So key off the ball play.

Getting like you said, pulling defenders away or having that option open.

So everyone has to play honest and he needs to keep that up.

That's what his gig is.

We need a lot more of that gig.

Someone who's been doing a lot of that is.

He was really strong as we discussed ad nauseam dirt about Rhode Island.

You know, there might have been some weak points, but we, we don't need to dwell on those like we did in that part of the podcast.

But is this another one where he's.

He's stepping up there and leading from the.

As a center back?

Yeah, yeah.

He was just always in the right spot and like he had one where it was a cross coming in, but it looked like it also could have went in coming from the side and he just headed it away like he was just in the right spot and made some good tackles.

He did get carded, if I remember.

Right.

Like something like in the 70th minute something.

But at that point I felt like ref was kind of card heavy.

Like he was handing out cards for nothing.

Well, he thought it was discount cards for tires.

But yeah, he was just always in the right spot and he's playing with passion and he's trying to get his team involved more and he's trying to lead that back line.

Is that, is that, is that captain material leaving?

Yeah, potentially.

And of course the one week we don't do predictions for the next match.

I think I predicted a center back scoring every time.

I think so.

That's what you get.

Yeah, but that's why I predict it.

Because you have guys like this who when they turn their switch on and they're going, they can be the difference maker.

Doesn't have to be a striker.

It doesn't have to be your attacking mid or your up wingers, whoever they are at that time.

It can be your center back coming forward and nodding it in.

We saw it time and time again with Leland when he played for us.

He can make that difference.

And I think that is one thing that I do respect Pyramid on probably the most is he gets that out of all his players of it's not just on this one guy.

He's our star.

Feed him the ball religiously.

Anyone can make that difference.

It could be any person on any night.

It's just whoever wants it more and who's hungry.

And Graham Smith is doing it now.

So it's.

It's what we need to be honest.

We need a vocal leader, a field leader, someone who can do it on both ends.

Exactly what we described for captaincy or just someone to rally the troops.

There's your starter right there.

There's your number one spot.

Who should be getting it now?

I would.

I'll tell you.

I like captains that are the, the kind of the calm, cool characters and I kind of like them being.

Being more defensive minded.

I don't know why.

It just seems like when you have leaders behind watching the play in front of you, they can add a lot more to just that calming voice versus high energy all the time.

But that's just me.

Are we also a little like biased because we had a center back as captain for so long?

That's just like could be.

It feels a little weird having a midfield of offensive player like.

But I. Graham Smith is just like every, every game I leave I'm just like Smith had a pretty decent game.

Like he's the first player that comes to my head like every time I think of like who had the best performance is what I am trying to say.

I mean you even allude to it with the Tampa game.

We don't get the win.

But we damn sure may not have gotten a draw if it wasn't for Graham Smith.

So even in matches where we escape with a point or even if we lose like he still is someone out there preventing more and more goals from going in.

Yeah.

And we.

We have to have a strong defense and that's what we've always.

That's the advantage we've had over the last couple years is our defensive has been a wall and our weakness has always been about scoring goals.

Kind of in my view.

And this year it's a little bit twist on it.

But we're not scoring the goals.

But so we.

I think we still need a strong defense because we're not the over the top type of team that keeps putting the ball over top when we start doing that.

But this seemed a little bit different.

It's also a very good issue for Pyramid to have if we are tied going into extra time.

You get a corner kick and you have the opportunity.

You have one of these tall ass dudes, defender, whoever on the bench sub them on.

You might just grab a goal.

You don't have to send the keeper up to try and get it.

Put.

Put one of your six, four, six, five guys out there.

But didn't it when that headed ball from the corner off Joey and then up near.

Then he put looped it over the keeper.
