Episode 15 - Detroit v. CHS Pre-match banter from the pub

Join the Crue recording from Edmunds Oast Brewing Company for a little pre-match banter. We are joined by a special guest about midway through!

Up the Battery!

[00:00:00] Welcome to Cannon Crue, a weekly podcast discussing the Charleston battery. Your host, Granite, will be joined by other defenders of the fleet from the black and yellow supporters section and together they will help fortify and conquer their other Cannon crew.

[00:00:33] Welcome to the Cannon Crue podcast. I am Granite and I'm joined by Patrick. What's going on Granite? On location. And Ryan. What's going on Granite? Hey, we're just having a good time. We're here at Edmond's Oaks Brewing Company. We're here to discuss and have a couple beers.

[00:00:51] But we're also here to discuss the match tomorrow night kickoff at four o'clock. Detroit City versus our Charleston battery. Any thoughts, Patrick? A lot of thoughts. First thought, four o'clock kickoff at Edmond's Oaks. That means power hour everyone.

[00:01:08] So get your asses out here. Get a little discount. Get a little food. Get a little beer. And enjoy the match with everyone at a slight discount. A slight discount? So what is the discount? A happy hour? A happy hour.

[00:01:22] Pretty sure. Still 50% off all drinks and most of the menu gets a little discount. I'm not brushing up on that anymore but I know the beer is still half off. Yeah, on top of that though the beer prices are only $5 during the match as well.

[00:01:37] True. So regardless, you're still getting a good deal on beer. Plus four o'clock. Euros are going on. Get to watch a little European action. Slide the battery in. Sun's out. It's gonna be a beautiful day. What more can you ask for for an away game?

[00:01:53] No more ten o'clock games, right? No more ten o'clock games. No more eleven o'clock games. I will tell you what I'll ask for. I'm gonna ask for a Cuban or maybe a Fried Flander club. That sounds really good. So that's what I'll probably ask for tomorrow at about 4.15.

[00:02:09] About a quarter of the chicken tenders with tater tots basket. That's looking really good. I'll tell everyone that's listening, a little insider's secret. You want to go ahead and get the margarita pizza? Add sausage. Trust me. Oh, I trust you. That's good.

[00:02:24] So apparently when we do kind of semi-on-site podcasts, we have a tendency to gravitate towards the menu. But I'll tell you what, the beer selection here is just as good, if not better than the menu itself.

[00:02:40] And it is outstanding. So let's get back to talking about soccer or the football. Ryan, what's your initial thoughts on this match tomorrow? Initial thoughts on this match, Granite, is that this is again another pivotal game for the battery. It's another must-win scenario. They're going on the road.

[00:02:59] They haven't been on the road in a couple of weeks, actually. And this is the start of the two-game series on the road. And they haven't produced in the last three games. They haven't done anything extraordinary. They've looked very sloppy up front. They've looked very disorganized.

[00:03:16] And we've also seen a change in the locker room come through. So, you know, there's a lot of change, a lot of moving pieces and puzzle pieces moving around in that battery locker room.

[00:03:28] And I'm hoping that we can get those puzzle pieces to finally settle on their pieces again. Yeah, this is a way match too. It's up north. But we have a little bit of an edge. Because our coach might be from Detroit.

[00:03:45] Yeah, I think might be his understatement. He is Detroit. I think he might have motor oil in his blood. That's how native he is. Obviously, from Detroit, late at Michigan State, went and had his own career with professional football.

[00:04:03] And then went ahead and came back as an assistant for Michigan State University and Western Michigan. But the big tell is, Peerman was the Detroit FC head coach while he was an assistant at Michigan State. Took over in 2013 and first season going undefeated.

[00:04:24] The whole season, I believe they were in the MPSL at that point. But pretty much undefeated only lost in the finals of the MPSL.

[00:04:36] And just to add on that too, Patrick, you also have Greenwiss who hails from out of township just outside of Grand Rapids and played at the University of Michigan. And then played USL PDL side for the Michigan Bucks.

[00:04:53] So you have another guy who's been around the Michigan area and has seen how they play up there. That's a good point. I'm surprised Peerman has them on his squad if he's from Michigan. Maybe there's a link there, right? Yeah.

[00:05:06] But it's also very strange that, did you say he played, Greeny played with Michigan? Yes. And Peerman in state. Michigan State. Uh-oh. No wonder why Greeny is on the bench. He's not injured. He's just a Spartan. You think he's injured now? I think he's just a Spartan.

[00:05:26] I mean, it's kind of nice for Peerman. So it's kind of a homecoming for him. But he was at Detroit FC for six seasons. He went through all the ranks with them. Left eventually before he went out to like Birmingham and all that.

[00:05:42] But yeah, he had a 49-17 and 17 record over six seasons with Detroit in that time. So he kind of built this program and into what they are today. So I'm sure he's got a lot of feels going on, going back.

[00:05:57] But hopefully it gives us a little competitive advantage. When no matter if you're a coach or a player at any level, when you're visiting a former place of where you dedicated your time, hard work, dedication, gave it your all at,

[00:06:17] and you go back to visit and you're playing against it, it brings a whole new level of emotions and intensity that you want to be there to experience because it's going to be an amazing game. We're going to see some surprises, some tricks.

[00:06:31] I think we're finally going to get a set piece goal this game. I mean, especially for a guy who got his professional coaching start in a place. Like that's a lot of emotions going back to it. Yeah, granted he was assistant coaching at Michigan State

[00:06:48] and then took over this who knows what this club can be in Detroit. You can look at it. Michigan's his origin story. Everything for him flew through Michigan. And I would like to, before we get too far out,

[00:07:02] I will give a shout out to Detroit FC because they do have a women's program. They are heavily invested in the youth programs as well. So this is one of our forefront leaders in the USL championship of like development across all stages. So kudos to that.

[00:07:19] I hope a lot of teams can learn from them in this aspect and just doing community and team and development first and then professional level is our reward. Yeah, and add on top of that Pat, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds as well are also investing just as much as Detroit

[00:07:39] and it's amazing to see these different teams spreading across the US adding that into this nation and it's beautiful. So let's talk about Detroit. How are they going to come at us and how do we deal with it? I think this is a mix, right?

[00:07:55] So for a lot of games they try to seem dominant especially in the last game against Rhode Island they were dominant but Rhode Island is not a strong team, right? So the very average with their play they over commit to a side,

[00:08:11] the ball playing side a lot and their chances are far in few between. They get a couple lucky crosses in like usually on the ground is what they scored in against Rhode Island but they tend to play from behind and despite starting out like 5-0

[00:08:32] I mean they had a good record to start with the close games where they were 1-0 up and I believe 3 of the 4 previous games 2 of which they lost, one of which they drew and they ended up just giving the game away

[00:08:48] so I mean they don't have a lot of clean sheets in the league I think they only have 3, battery of 8 which is dominant in showing your defensive prowess but I think it's going to be even if this is a game where we go down

[00:09:02] and I have no, like, I don't feel like this is a game we're going to lose I feel like we're going to come right back and pound them with the ball because they're terrible on counters. Yeah, I think that's where you can hit them hard

[00:09:14] and just to add onto it with Detroit Detroit was winless in the month of May and they only have one win coming into this month of June with a win over Rhode Island last week and as you just talked about Rhode Island's not that great of a team

[00:09:30] they sit in more on you they don't have that attack going forward this is the game where a tactic's in and they get it going, they get the shit going because right now the tire books, the exhaustion the fatigue, the look on their faces

[00:09:50] of not knowing where to go the battery has been struggling lately though but especially when going forward we just haven't been getting anything in the final third, shot-wise and what I saw in the last game towards the end of the first half

[00:10:06] is what I hope I never see again and that was Archer and Seggbers immediately looking to the long ball and trying to play MD Myers over the top Great, that can work every once in a while

[00:10:18] but when you hit that ball three to four times in a row to one of the smallest guys in the field MD is not that big of a guy you're not going to win those balls every time when you have a six-four guy at the center

[00:10:29] play our game, we've got to play simple go back to how we played that second game against New Mexico, treat it just like that I will say this is probably a game where I'll dial back my hatred of the ball being played around a lot

[00:10:45] and then out to the wings just for the fact that Detroit loves to push forward too much the wings are probably the best point to exploit them we may be able to get in behind with a Torres and I know we had talked about Nick

[00:11:00] possibly moving to a center roll overlapping whatever we may be but I feel like he's going to get back on the score sheet, back in his scoring ways just from wing play in this game because Detroit over commits their full backs way too high

[00:11:16] they try and keep them in attack but when you get countered you're going to defend a counter when you're already sitting back with only two of your four guys yeah that's I think where we need Torres and Nick to step in if their full backs are coming forward

[00:11:31] we need to take over that space and use our speed and our skills and get the ball to the center but we still need to come down the middle is this a game that you guys possibly see a change in our lineup like a possible substitution

[00:11:45] with a potential player getting back into our roster mix are you talking about Rodriguez? we are talking about Rodriguez I don't know I hope so is he off the injured list or whatever list he was on he wasn't playing last match

[00:12:00] he wasn't even on the bench last game that's not a good time yeah I'm hoping he comes back because right now I feel like that's a vital piece that we're missing and I feel like we wouldn't have gotten rid of Jake we're down in numbers like that

[00:12:16] I feel like we got rid of him right when Rodriguez is coming back and I feel like Rodriguez should be getting minutes in the next game he should be dressed and he's going to be coming off the bench no he's not going to get his 60 minutes plus

[00:12:28] but I feel like he's going to be a good substitution for Icaza yeah we need to score a goal early and we need to just keep going at it yeah because it puts the when we get that goal early it puts the other team

[00:12:42] they have to attack us to that point and it opens up for our front people like Nick, like Torres like MD to put some goals in and it sounds like we probably have a pretty good chance of doing it and when you open the field like that

[00:12:54] what do you create? creativity you create space you create more communication you create more chances and you create more opportunities to connect and build trust with your teammates early in the season I will say one person I'm probably worried about from Detroit

[00:13:13] because there's not a lot of film on this guy is their starting striker Elvis Ammo who went down injured April 6 Rhode Island he came on made his first appearance back since that so was that two months two and a half months so he finally came back 80 minutes

[00:13:34] so 10 minutes under his boots but I just don't know what to make of this guy like you don't as a starting striker for your team you go down and you have a makeshift team kind of filling for you there's not enough to know if he's that attacking threat

[00:13:50] like an Augie Williams or someone who's just going to get past our centers like our center mids and get into our center backs and create a little bit of chaos that's the only player I'm kind of worried about because we just haven't seen enough of this guy

[00:14:03] number nine like keep an eye out I mean this guy's been missing for two and a half months and I mean you know more than anyone Ryan you come back from injury you have something to prove and you want to make sure your name's on that starting sheet

[00:14:15] again and again yeah and that's what defenders and the goalkeeper has to reiterate to his back line and ensure that guys when there's a free ball don't get it mistaken that that guy is not going for the ball you got a name that's the name

[00:14:32] that's not going for the ball you got to know every single time when that ball is up for grabs he's going in a hundred percent and he's going in full throttle because if he's got something to prove just like you said and he's got to get himself back

[00:14:46] in the starting lineup back with the minutes back in the glory of the team you know because he was that star for them right now he's not because he's been injured and he wants to get back to that glory spot as soon as possible exactly he's hungry

[00:15:00] he's ready we need to stop him so we're joined at the table by Joey he just showed up here he's been tending bar and slinging drinks and slinging drinks Joey what are we going to expect tomorrow night? well first of all thanks for coming over today guys

[00:15:17] and hanging out but tomorrow early match four o'clock kickoff we're going to go ahead and try and reserve as much of the tap room as possible to stack in as many battery faithful as we can and going to have some five-dollar beer specials you know

[00:15:33] throw out as many pints as possible at half time we'd like to give some swag away you know see the see the brand out there in public you know some beers some shirts some cool giveaway stuff but I mean it's been huge this season

[00:15:47] having a home for everybody to come to and sit down and you know support the team either home or away doesn't matter had a good turnout almost every week so hopefully this one is the biggest one yet and Joey you're just not a bartender

[00:16:00] you're just not some guy slinging some beer you're also a huge battery supporter sometimes unfortunately but recently very very yes like a massive massive soccer fan so we actually come over here you know and you said hey I want to talk about

[00:16:14] Detroit and how they haven't beat us in like a century or something like that I looked at it like a few weeks ago and I believe that like the last time that Detroit City beat the battery was in it was in 2022 and so since then

[00:16:29] I mean it's been some close matches so hopefully we can continue that winning mentality against them I mean we're overdue for one at this point if you ask me Oh we absolutely are so let's switch back to Edmunds host oh yeah

[00:16:41] so you and I have been working hard about getting some swag up on the wall oh yeah making it look like this is the home of the battery even though it's going to be in a future absolutely it has been the past

[00:16:50] and so when you come in here wear your jerseys wear your scarves you're going to see black and yellow on the walls behind the bar 100% and I know that just not you but the general manager Devin's bought into this and he's a huge soccer supporter

[00:17:04] not much of a fan but he has supported a team in this this pub for a while yeah and like it's he does support a team in the wrong color in this pub if you ask me I mean like the whole these arsenal fans come in

[00:17:19] and I'll tell you what I about got shut off there I'm so sorry no no it's been fun I mean being a fox in the hen or lion in the hen house so to speak you know as a Chelsea supporter it's I've been welcomed in nice

[00:17:32] I mean for the most part I mean I can't say that it's been the warmest of welcomes but everyone has warmed up to me being here that's for sure well as as the gooner we love you Joey can we at least get your Euro predictions then ooh

[00:17:53] I mean because I don't keep up with Chelsea and I'm sure there's some Chelsea maybe some Chelsea players I think we have we have five you know across the board it's a very last year we had 17 we had we were the most supported club that was actually there

[00:18:07] but I mean the hosts look really good obviously Germany is a powerhouse but I mean if if there was a generation to do it I think that football is coming home to the UK you know I think England has an absolutely like just steadfast defense

[00:18:25] firing on all cylinders on offense and if they had an opportunity this is the one so I mean I'd like to I'd like to see them just because I pay the most attention I guess a lot of those homegrown players just watching the prem weekend week out so

[00:18:38] they'll see but between Germany England I mean I'd go between one of the two of those taking it all the way bringing the trophy home for sure and Edmunds is bringing companies got all these games on this summer Oh absolutely like if it's

[00:18:50] if it's on TV and we're able to pop it on if I'm not here then you know ask any of the bartenders or whoever's you can grab a hold of and they'll be happy to toss it up there but if I'm in the building

[00:19:00] football is on for sure that's the reason why we love you that's exactly even though you're that blue color we still love you well it's in my blood what can I say when I first tattooed I didn't know anybody I was 21 what am I going to do

[00:19:14] but then I got more and then kept watching and kept watching and it was weird they started winning trophies it's just like I'm circling back and racking my brain for the last Premier League title that Arsenal won Joey's now shut off Well thanks for letting me

[00:19:33] come over and hang out with you guys for a bit I'll leave you to it Joey got one more question for you actually if it's okay with you I was going to bring over the jersey that got burned during the first home game of the season

[00:19:47] that I wore that signed by the entire team I have it in a enclosed case right now Oh absolutely I was going to bring that by and see if we could possibly have it hung up for the fans to see for the remainder of the season

[00:20:00] Oh for sure Absolutely like we got tons and tons of space in that goes for anybody if there's like battery swag or any kind of like memorabilia that's like related to the team definitely you want to have it like up I mean the three lines pub

[00:20:14] was such a really cool iconic thing you know black bod but at the end of the day you know that being taken away and all that stuff like getting put up for auction I know some people may have gotten a couple little pieces here and there but

[00:20:26] looking back and seeing all that cool stuff whether it had been from internationals or pro teams or whatever or just battery related stuff it was always just so interesting to see so hopefully we can kind of emulate that vibe and just like really just plant a flag

[00:20:42] and make a statement saying you know this is the home of the battery away from home you know this is where the supporters come to have some good beer have some good times cheer on the boys hopefully watch some really great battles back and forth and on Saturday

[00:20:58] hopefully they're here to see a Detroit win sorry a battery win we'll just have to cut that one out Joey has also cut off again he's a Chelsea fan so he's against everybody that we know about sorry I've been drinking don't tell my boss but you know

[00:21:11] I think one too many bomb-by-times for sure thank you Joey for your time appreciate it man we'll see you guys on Saturday thanks so much sounds good thank you for joining us man so let's continue on just for a quick second I think Joey makes a good point

[00:21:25] it's kind of if you guys remember the old battery stadium over on DI how much swag was upstairs and kind of like what do they have they had the whole case like world cup balls up on the way up to the bar they did anything that's cool

[00:21:41] and you think it is worthwhile it's not a place of judgment here I mean it's pretty cool it's an awesome we'd love to build it into a shrine of a football shrine so you got anything cool let me bring it I mean obviously not Spursers

[00:21:54] he's not welcome by anything battery or World Cup I mean love that stuff so cool shout out for that so let's wrap it up let's just meet here tomorrow kick off four o'clock we'll be here early tomorrow celebrating as I have just closed on my house granite

[00:22:15] and I will be staying in Charleston for the near future he's committed a warning to you all I don't know if we're all excited about that but I guess we'll accept him I know the West Asher area is excited I know one house

[00:22:28] you cannot kick soccer balls at because they will be defended so let's ask Ryan some how to pronounce certain streets little Charleston trivia it is it is Ryan how do you pronounce the island that's right by South of Folly South of Folly South of Folly

[00:22:53] alright so I want everyone starts with an E to realize that I am a Virginia native so I don't have my pronunciation so a lot of history in Virginia by the way a lot of history a lot of civil war history should know I'm gonna say Sheawha Islands

[00:23:08] no we talked about it earlier a little further a little further starts with an E yeah you go Pasquia well you go best Seabro aww so then a desto that's it a desto he got it Patrick you said he would get it nailed it

[00:23:27] okay we'll leave Ryan alone with his little house purchase hey another quick shout out Charleston United soccer team U11 yeah the 2011 Charleston United team gave them a huge shout out right now they are currently playing in the super regionals and Palo Alto, Texas right now

[00:23:53] they just hide against the Arkansas team 0-0 today and they will play against Texas and Oklahoma tomorrow so good luck to them those young men I got the referee to match a little scrimmage between them and James Allentine that was phenomenal

[00:24:09] and those young men were doing a fantastic job talking to one of their kind of managers out there and the boys were nervous very nervous so they were trying to get some things in there doing some fun things to get them to a little calm down

[00:24:22] so fantastic to hear that they got a point they move on to play next team so Patrick score prediction for tomorrow night I'm on the fence here boys if Grinny's in goal I think it's a 2-0 battery like it if uh

[00:24:45] Cous is in goal I think it's a 1-0 I think we just played a little different with Cous in goal we play safer is it like a late goal or is it an early goal just curious I think it's an early goal

[00:24:55] I think from what the way we play and what I assume Pyramen's been screaming at the boys in practice is you dominate the ball early you get the chances and we're just not converting them and we've seen this early on in the season

[00:25:10] for the first three four games I think we were just backing that rut and we're gonna slap that rust off and get back into knocking the ball in the goal early so I'm gonna piggyback right off of you and I liked what you said

[00:25:23] about scoring the goal early but if we score early since we're a team hasn't scored much in the last two to three games if we score early I have to see a score more so it's gotta be 2-0, 3-0 for us if Grinney's in goal

[00:25:39] if Cous is in goal guess what it's still 2-3-0 because Cous is just as good as Grinney when it comes to right now Grinney has a mask on right now Grinney's got a mask on that's cooler and Cous got two shutouts right now

[00:25:57] well the battery have eight Cous has almost as many shutouts as Detroit Grinney's got more than Detroit but Cous is our backup Cous is the backup right now and no disrespect to Cous but a mask man a mask man is stopping everything crying, soccer balls everything

[00:26:19] that's right Patrick Tully does not like Cous don't worry Cous I like you he's just trying to get a jersey he's giving up on Grinney he's moved on to the next one it's MD, he loves MD at this point who's counting how many jerseys

[00:26:35] he's trying to stack up he burns one to get another that's fair play that was well done I give you that, that was well done just in case you're concerned about my prediction I've got 3-0 because we've got three points we've got 3-0, Torres scoring two

[00:26:53] I love Torres scoring you know you want to say it the forward, say it Segber scoring the third oh my goodness I thought you were going MD gotta go MD I'm not a big fan Conway's got the haircut now Conway's really messed me up

[00:27:11] and you all know what kind of hairstyle I go with and he goes there and gets that crew cut or wherever he did Conway you got the Acasa cut but Conway cut his hair who was that and I had to oh that's Conway with the haircut

[00:27:27] he looks meaner, I think he's out for vengeance I'd love to see him get 45 oh I'd love to see him come in oh yeah, I'd like to see that too so we'll meet y'all we'll just be here, I think we're sleep, pull out the sleeper bags boys

[00:27:39] more afternoon we're just staying, yeah you guys are on at 9am so he might as well just yeah well, oh he throws his head on pillows we're good, we're good cheers boys camera see you tomorrow
