Battery visits the left coast.
[00:00:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to Cannon Crue, a weekly podcast discussing the Charleston battery. Your host
[00:00:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Granit will be joined by other defenders of the fleet from the Black and Yellow Supporters
[00:00:26] [SPEAKER_01]: section and together they will help fortify and conquer the other Cannon Crue.
[00:00:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Welcome to the Cannon Crue, I am Granit and I'm here to host a nice little discussion with two of my
[00:00:42] [SPEAKER_04]: co-hosts. Ryan how you doing? Doing good bro, good to be here. I'm also joined by Patrick Patrick,
[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_04]: how you doing? I'm well, how are you? I'm doing well, hey hopefully we're all recovered from
[00:00:54] [SPEAKER_04]: St. Patrick's Day on Sunday and we're ready to talk a little bit about our beloved Charleston
[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_04]: battery and their last match against the Oakland Roots in California. Patrick and I went down to
[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_04]: the Mnzo's Brewing Company to watch the match down there. Patrick, I mean honestly I was like a
[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_03]: kid before Christmas sitting at my house waiting for the clock to finally change to nine so
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I can head down to Edmund's Oast for the first viewing party of the season. Game was at 10 so
[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_03]: try to get there a little early expecting some people but we got a lot, place was packed,
[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_04]: staffers, former players. Yeah we got quite a few, thanks also to the regiment because they
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_04]: put that out on their website and their socials and brought quite a few people in it probably
[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_04]: 20-30. Yeah for sure, not bad for a 10 p.m. Saturday night watch party of the battery.
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_04]: So one of the things to notice when we came out, talk about the lineups first. We had a couple
[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_04]: changes in there to start out with. Greenwiss is a keeper, Sigbers the Santos this is I think
[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_04]: this is his first start, Palmer Smith, Malloy, Rodriguez, Allen, Conway, Marcanik and Gures.
[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_04]: On the bench there was a notable person missing, Mr. Archer, I guess we'll talk about that a little
[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_04]: bit later and you know we're running a short roster anyways and having somebody out
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_04]: not even on the roster not even traveling was a little mysterious. One of the first things
[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_04]: I want to talk about and go this out to you with the thing I noticed was the pitch, turf pitch.
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Ryan you've played a little bit of football in your life. Talk to me about the
[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_04]: differences between turf and grass and how that fixture play and everything along those lines.
[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Well now since moving down here to South Carolina being from in Virginia, turf is a lot
[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_02]: different just being down here and I just got used to now playing on turf that has sand and has
[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_02]: you know sometimes it has like wood and stuff like that underneath of it
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_02]: rather than just the rubber tire pieces. The field did catch my eye a bit it was I thought it was
[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_02]: kind of beautiful honestly and they had sewn in regular grass and around the field to tie it in
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_02]: to make it more of a natural turf field. It looks like the ball bounced around quite well on it and
[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I was quite impressed with it. I thought I heard one of the announcers say that they brought
[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_04]: that turf itself from their former pitch where they were playing to this one. Did anybody else hear
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_03]: that? I do yes yes they said if it if something looks a little familiar tonight your eyes are not
[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_04]: deceiving you and that. Interesting too. Ryan do you prefer to play on grass or turf?
[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it depends if I'm playing in the small sided like 8v8 or so I'd prefer to play on turf
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_02]: but if you're playing 11v11 grass all day. Well one of the things that Patrick and I talked about
[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_04]: was the injuries and we were just kind of talking about it then all of a sudden there
[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_04]: were two or three injuries not to any battery players thank goodness for doing the turf but
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_04]: it seemed like from the roots players and it's always been one of those discussions about turf
[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_04]: player and grass when it comes to injury prevention or anything like that. Patrick one of the players
[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_04]: we were watching really hurt himself and had to come off early. Yeah they had two first half
[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_03]: injuries I mean you see that as a battery fan this is an our home field so you just see
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_03]: that and you worry our players are going to have a similar outcome if not just a freak reaction
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_03]: to playing on turf maybe at just the ball skipping and running really fast and trying
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_03]: to adjust to the play style of it but you're not used to starting and stopping as much when
[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_03]: you play in these less natural fields that we're used to so fortunately we just came out
[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_03]: without an injury in this game because we really don't need any of those and we really don't because
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_04]: we're short I don't want to say short this is by design I do believe that we have a 19 person
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_04]: roster where other ones are carrying like 25 so any injury is going to affect us greatly
[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_04]: so let's talk about the the roots just for a second they're western conference team
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_04]: so this is our one time we play them this year we don't have to play them again
[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_04]: they play a little bit played very similar to North Carolina they were kind of setting back and trying to
[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_04]: let us come at them so let's talk about the first half Ryan your general thoughts
[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_02]: first half I thought if similar to North Carolina we're still able to maintain possession
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_02]: a great amount and able to really connect and flow out of the back even though we were missing
[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_02]: a very crucial piece and that was Lula Nartret center back not even having him on the bench
[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_02]: even at the stadium at all should have you think would have some effect on players you
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_02]: know mentality wise you know their big man top guys not there on the field he's hanging there
[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_02]: at all so they got to carry that with them and I thought they did an excellent job
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah I mean first half just there's a lot of positives to look at it right so we came out
[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_03]: the high press was very relevant we forced a lot of mistakes by Oakland that led to chances for us
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_03]: which is a huge positive not having to break down a 10 man side more so just having to
[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_03]: break down the next three or four players on a counter but what stuck out to me probably
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_03]: the most is we really exploited their right side of the field excuse me just with the overlapping play
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_03]: one two touches I mean the first 30 minutes I don't really think Oakland was able to string
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_03]: more than two passes together before the press really broke them down so positive to see
[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_03]: just that in essence of the team working as one unit to create chances for themselves
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah there was a lot of balls over switching over to our left hand side their right hand side
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_04]: and trying to move it up the side there with with sigbers and and a good rest now let's talk about
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_04]: the one big event that happened during that first half and that's the goal well leading up to the
[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_02]: goal I want to refer back to what we talked about last episode and that was with the North
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Carolina game we had mentioned that Charleston were getting into the final third but we just weren't
[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_02]: creating enough space to get the shot off in time this game we really took advantage of that and you
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_02]: saw it with the numbers we were able to get you know over 20 shots off and with that first
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_02]: goal getting that shot with the power behind it we were able to then knock it right in behind
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was a quality goal um it was great for Nick to get the first one in for the season
[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's showing why he is up top and a kind of question does leaving last game um if he
[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_02]: should be the main up top and I think he kind of answered some questions in the first half by
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_04]: scoring that he did and just to play up leading up to the cross into Nick was pretty impressive
[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Patrick we talked about at the watch party and just the movement of the ball getting it up to
[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_04]: to the right hand side and put it over on Nick uh it was pretty impressive yeah for sure I mean
[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_03]: everything with this movement started from a set piece so it all started from a corner
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_03]: which kept them on their back heels and as soon as they got the ball to drive it out
[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_03]: we pressed again ball back to the keeper press him hard he just boots it to clear it we then worked
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_03]: the ball back wide to Torres and I think they just realized if we're going to be sitting there
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_03]: and the opposition is just kind of going to set back and let us play he took the chance early
[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_03]: and it really paid for us um not sure on the keeper's finish on that one maybe Ryan you could
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: touch on that but either way the ball in the back of the net can't go wrong there
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_04]: so one of the great things that I saw was Nick's movement off the ball kind of slid into that you
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_04]: know cover that half space kind of slid between two defenders and when the ball come off his head
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_04]: it was kind of a somewhat a difficult header because he had to really whip his head to get
[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_04]: the ball on target so it was great first off to get in that position second getting the
[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_04]: ball on target and maybe it was a little bit of bad keeping Ryan what do you think about it
[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_02]: the keeper skills at that point I think the keeper he honestly just lost concentration of it
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_02]: he got the ball you see him grasp it and everything and Nick had as you mentioned he had a fully
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_02]: whip his head around the ball to get enough power on it so with that spinning everything
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_02]: just the continued motion of the ball the keeper just kind of lost track of it and let it go
[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_02]: he should have just grabbed it and fell down on it or punched it out
[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_02]: but luckily enough for us when our end it was able to go in
[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_04]: it still counts it's still went up on the yes scoreboard is a goal I do exactly crosses that
[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_03]: white line 1-0 hey Ryan do you think that maybe he was a little jittery since this was probably
[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_03]: the fourth or fifth chance we had inside the box of just him jump it around and he just wasn't
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_02]: prepared thinking it was actually coming to him well this keeper um Blanchett uh Blanchett
[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Paul Blanchett he is a top notch goalkeeper and he's always had top saves every week
[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_02]: throughout last season and he was a front runner for keeper the year last year this
[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_02]: is kind of how he plays he's a very uh very interesting keeper and from keeper to watch
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_02]: his Jerry movement is to trigger players into wanting them to shoot he wants them to shoot
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_02]: early and he invites that and um that's part of his playing style um it's just that time you know
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I think in that case the jitteriness did get the better hand of him was the first goal for
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_04]: the battery this season so like you said uh no more fitting person to put in the back of
[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_04]: net than nick he's worked hard up there last year he's working hard again this year putting
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_04]: himself in good positions and having some success so the big yellow elephant in the room cautions
[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean the only thing for me was we had a yellow card come out in it was about the 15th minute
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_03]: 14th 15th minute for palma and I really didn't think it was the yellow I mean if anything of
[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_03]: foul uh he got ball and the player at the same time so me growing up as a defender I see that as a
[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_03]: clean tackle but bare minimum I don't think that's a yellow at all uh and definitely not one for a
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_03]: center defender who has guys behind him on the play but that that's about it for what else I saw
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah and I'm going to talk about the yellow because it seems like we
[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_04]: what I would consider soft foul sometimes and then definitely this was a soft yellow if it was a
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_04]: caution at all you know you look back and see what cautions are issued out for one is unsporting
[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_04]: behavior in a bad tackle and it has to be a reckless what he did didn't seem to be reckless to me
[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_04]: uh he got foot on the ball and I thought it was a good tackle let alone it wasn't a
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_04]: it wasn't a cautionable offense when you look up you know because I like to read things you know
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_04]: reckless is defined by the laws of the game as any action usually a tackle or challenge by a player
[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_04]: which disregards ignores the danger to or consequences for the opponent I didn't see that
[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_03]: tackle as reckless yeah I didn't see him lunging in or going after a player
[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_03]: or just have no shot at making the play because he made the play and even if he missed and got only
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_03]: the guy I mean that's it's kind of rough coming in shoulder to shoulder on the side just to give
[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_03]: a guy a yellow but he did get the ball so mood talking point but I guess we just have
[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_03]: to move on with it because we did end the half with the goal and the most chances which
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_03]: really eases the pain a little bit it does help with the pain factor any thoughts on set pieces
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah for sure I think uh we had a lot of good opportunities from some free kick pieces I mean
[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_03]: hitting the wall on a few of them but regardless the ball went out to create another set piece
[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_03]: chance through a corner so regardless of what you think in a game the more set pieces you have
[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_03]: more opportunities to score so it's always nice to at least create these chances for ourselves besides
[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_03]: having to break an entire team down to create it out of nothing absolutely they didn't have as
[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_04]: many corners as we did but they had this this hackshaw guy and his throw ends it was like a
[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_04]: corner from wherever he was taking it a throw in on the field he was launching it into the
[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_04]: box there was one it seemed like he was almost at midfield and that ball was flying to the box he
[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_04]: has a range of you know almost a whole half of field it's pretty impressive we need that we might
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_04]: need a long throw or like that they come in uh work on you know with our players so go into
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_04]: the second half uh what happened then what i'm talking about is yes um I think a breakdown in
[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_03]: play I mean there's a few points I can touch on that I kind of saw uh realistically just three or four
[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_03]: defenders missing as they dribble down our right side and just lunging in tackle after tackle
[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_03]: and I mean at that point you don't want to say you need to get the guy but you need to get
[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_03]: something either you need to get the ball and the guy or you can't allow three guys to just
[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_03]: run ramp it down the side of our field making easy cross in to what look like people not watching the
[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_03]: game just kind of standing around um and then they had at home on the back post which is
[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_03]: some unfortunate spot to be scored on from yeah Ryan I'm going to get to you in a second because
[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_04]: this this comes back to your your keeper background um but the Santos love him he was making some
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_04]: great runs early today some overlapping runs some underlapping runs he was working well
[00:15:59] [SPEAKER_04]: down that left side but he kind of I felt like he got caught ball watching on this because the the
[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Oakland player can just drifting in ever so slightly hand up there I think he had at one point behind
[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_04]: him by good 10 feet uh when the cross come through do you think Grinnece could have done a better job
[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_02]: definitely um I definitely think he could have and it all comes out into judgment and knowing
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_02]: where your players are at and your comfortability and I think him still being new to Charleston
[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_02]: and not seeing him um really train and be here in preseason and he came in at the very late of
[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_02]: preseason um so he's still getting very comfortable with everybody in the back and also not having
[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_02]: again archer in the back um as that confident and that comfortability being a little bit
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_02]: shifted now um it's going to lead to some mistakes and that one it was just you know kind of a lapse
[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_02]: in judgment he thought staying home would have been safer and thought you know worst case scenario
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_02]: that should right at me pop it up um obviously not the case there yeah later later on he comes
[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_04]: out and punches the ball that I thought was spectacular and I was like why if you could
[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_04]: have done that the first one maybe I don't know maybe you know the angles you get from tv
[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_04]: angles you get from tv camera can be deceiving but when the head uh view from the side it seems like
[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_04]: could have got out there got the ball punched it or something but also did help the Santos was
[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_04]: standing in front of the goal and just basically ball watching there's nobody behind him he's got
[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_03]: a hand on his foot unfortunately for dos Santos in that play he did slip in the middle trying
[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_03]: to cover rock brewers who also slipped we just kind of fell down and I think his transitioning
[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_03]: with that caused him to slip as well but I mean just going back to the keeper
[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Ryan do you feel just not having that anchor and archer affected his mind in that moment just
[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_03]: knowing like hey if I go for this I at least know archer is going to cover the line for me
[00:18:07] [SPEAKER_02]: well that that is a factor but then you also have the other factor of just came out of
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_02]: half time you you were just sitting down you were just playing 45 minutes sat down for about
[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_02]: 10 minutes and it takes you about a solid five minutes to get back into the swing of things
[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_02]: and you know in that time frame you're kind of frozen you're flat footed Oakland took advantage
[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_02]: and drew straight at us and we had those three four missed tackles all misjudgments all flat
[00:18:36] [SPEAKER_02]: flooded mistakes and the keeper was right there to join them I think it was wasn't just on the
[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_02]: keeper I think it was the entire team was flat footed at that point because again you had
[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_02]: three missed tackles and then the keeper makes the mistake as well when you go back and look at it
[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_04]: a palma come out so it pulls him off the back line so you're left with the santos and think Smith
[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_04]: which is kind of the under the unsung kind of player he's doing a lot of hard work and nobody
[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_04]: mentions his name a whole lot but so Paul had to pull out seabirds already out I think he's the
[00:19:11] [SPEAKER_04]: second one tried to make a tackle and I think his mulloy had to drift back to try to cover
[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_04]: that cross and so it left basically two defenders left back in the left center back to cover that
[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_04]: and also we know that the roots Rodriguez he loves to do some I don't think he slipped I think
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_04]: it's a very generous thing because he slipped a lot or was found a lot and just kind of seemed
[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_04]: to fall on the ground whenever it was convenient for him but anyways yeah I think he's uh you
[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_04]: think he's a master of the dark arts I don't know if he's the master I saw him I mean dark arts is
[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_04]: when you don't see it and you have to have you know reviews but when people are just falling over
[00:19:51] [SPEAKER_04]: and you know in the crowds chanting Greg Luganis I think that's an indicator I think it was
[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not going to talk about the people in green let's talk about some of the good things that
[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_04]: happened you know we ended up tied at the end of the match I guess it's we didn't didn't
[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_04]: drop three points we went away out there probably a little sleep deprived going out to California the
[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_04]: long trip so maybe it's good result our last two matches we you know got a point from each one of
[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_04]: them which I think is a decent result I think we can do a lot better when you start looking at stats
[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_04]: like you know we maintain possession 66.8 percent of the time that's how when you start looking
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_04]: down the numbers it looks a lot like North Carolina and this time we did bust through I think one of the
[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_04]: things that was kind of standing out to me too is the number of shots we had because North Carolina
[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_04]: we didn't have very many shots we had I think nine here we had 21 why do you think we had so many
[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_03]: it was just pace of play honestly I have to give all credit to the high press that was run
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_03]: for the entire game like they were relentless they were forcing the mistakes it wasn't just
[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_03]: let's break down the other team the entire game it's let's force them to make the mistakes and we got
[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_03]: at least a third of those shots just clearly off of them turning the ball over in their half which
[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_03]: is it's incredible to watch that just knowing the other teams more worried about us pressing them
[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_03]: when they have the ball than just us with the ball Ryan do you think it's because we really tried
[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_04]: to take the ball wide and really spread their defense out and you know and working well in the box
[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_04]: and a couple of channels getting up there do you think that was helpful in doing so many shots in
[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_02]: oh getting out wide it's always going to be a benefit and that's what the battery really
[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_02]: took advantage of last year and I hope they do bring it back and that was where we found a lot
[00:21:52] [SPEAKER_02]: of success with nick out wide and you know nick had a I'm not sure if there was 11 or 13 goals
[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_02]: last season with a ton of assists to go with it so our people out wide can can make things happen can
[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_02]: create opportunities and that's where you know that that's what's going to benefit us going forward
[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_03]: that's a good good observation because I was just looking back and seeing we did have 27 crosses
[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_03]: in that game and they only had five so maybe I was just paying a little too much attention
[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_03]: to the press but the crosses for sure were a huge factor yeah when I was looking back at you know
[00:22:39] [SPEAKER_04]: just and I know there's only two we're only two matches in when you look at
[00:22:44] [SPEAKER_04]: shots on target or shots for the eastern conference I believe were second
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_04]: right however when you look for the conversion rate were 11 so it's two opposite ends of the
[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_04]: table and we did get more shots on target but we're not converting
[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_04]: so what's your thought do we just need to keep doing what we're doing and good things
[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_03]: going to happen yeah for sure I mean Alan had a volley at the edge of the box that
[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_03]: almost went in spectacular strike of the ball I mean what do you ask your attacking players
[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_03]: just to create the chances they will start going in it's still like you said second game of the season
[00:23:25] [SPEAKER_03]: these things will start clicking people will know where the ball is going to be and just
[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_02]: start being in those moments to put it home and so exciting to see you know the dramatic change
[00:23:39] [SPEAKER_02]: from Washington against North Carolina with only eight shots the entire game that's total
[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_02]: shots compared to now 21 shots this game you know that's what we were asking for that are from
[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_02]: them was to create the space to get the opportunity to get the shot off because once you get the shot
[00:23:55] [SPEAKER_02]: off now you have the opportunity to get the ball in the back of the net whereas last game we just
[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_02]: weren't doing that so now going into a home game hopefully we can we can continue that momentum
[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_04]: one of the other numbers is it jumped out at me was the number of clearances
[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_04]: we had 12 clearances they had 36 so just look at those numbers raw it I don't want to say it's panic
[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_04]: mode but it was just dump the ball as soon as it got into their third and we're putting pressure on
[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_04]: so they were not on the ball as much as we were obviously but they were just dumping it out
[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_04]: rather than trying to work out of the back so Matt chained it up nice little scuffle at the
[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_04]: end Ryan this I want to talk to you about also is that from the keeper's perspective when Gwyneth's
[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_04]: come out and he went up for that ball and Rodriguez I don't know if he was pushed into him or whatever
[00:24:55] [SPEAKER_04]: but he really did put Gwyneth in a really really awkward position I didn't think he needed it
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I think in that moment as a keeper we'd like to think that our teammates and we know that
[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_02]: our teammates always have our backs and in that moment I know for a fact Archer or Palma would
[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_02]: have been the first guys right in that face and Gwyneth would have either still been on the ground
[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_02]: or had just gotten up Gwyneth shouldn't have been the guy to go face-to-face being the one
[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_02]: who got nailed to the ground that it's going to be a yellow card every single time because
[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_02]: just retaliation you're instigating it it was it was a poor challenge but I think that it was
[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_02]: just unlucky because the battery player I think kind of pushed them into him you know unfortunately
[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_02]: kind of tripped them up so as a referee it's just you kind of look for who's retaliating
[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_04]: and I think there's another example of a dive too because Rodriguez just kind of fell over
[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_04]: on his back so another I think when I look back at it he drew two yellow cards against battery
[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_04]: players in a match and I think both of them were really really weak yellow cards so either he's a
[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_04]: very good actor in person when you're on the field or just the center was kind of bamboozled by
[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_02]: him I don't know I mean that's a pad said I mean maybe he's not the master but maybe he's taking
[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_03]: a class or two from the dark arts well he's in California he may be taking classes out in California
[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm sure it's part of their training so one of the interesting injuries that we had I don't think
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_04]: we had very many but one of them was drac he come down his back or he ran into an opposing player
[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_04]: and he was went down played a little bit and then went back down it looked like you might
[00:26:52] [SPEAKER_04]: injure his back have you seen or heard anything about that injury I haven't heard anything
[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_03]: about it but I've had back issues at my life from playing soccer growing up and golf as well
[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_03]: and it really just looked like one where it tightened up he tried to get it a little loose
[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_03]: but it just wasn't going and just re-tighten back up which hopefully it's not that serious
[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_03]: but I've been there where it's tight and the last thing you want to do is just I mean you
[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_03]: could see him when he was coming off he's still kind of bent over favoring it pretty heavily so
[00:27:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I hope it's nothing major a little hot tub massage session can't get out maybe a nod or something but
[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah back injuries are no fun at all I don't enjoy them either Ryan do you enjoy your back
[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_04]: injuries no no watch it watching you watching you on the field a couple times I thought you
[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_04]: were done but you're young and resilient so it's drac is to you what can we do to improve what can
[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_04]: we do better as a team out there I mean we're getting possession we're doing all the peers the
[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_04]: right things and now we're getting some people in the box and being dangerous but what else can we
[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_03]: do to improve I think just that final touch that uh striker mentality just follow through that ball
[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_03]: and and just know it'll probably either blast through the keeper or go right next to him
[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_03]: into the back of the net I think everything else is there right now starting to really show
[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_03]: show from our attacking threat that it doesn't matter who's putting the ball in or who's running
[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_03]: on it that that last person just is going to figure out that touch and get it into the back
[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_03]: of the net and we'll be scoring three or four a game I don't understand I agree with that and
[00:28:47] [SPEAKER_02]: it comes from the our aggression and how we will want to win the game and you know
[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_02]: what if we want to go and get the ball go after it and put the ball in the back of the net
[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_02]: and I think there's a few guys who are on the bench right now who are going to come back into a more
[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_02]: central gameplay mode you know more minutes and stuff like that more like 45 to 50 minutes
[00:29:10] [SPEAKER_02]: plus in the game and those guys are gonna really start getting goals for us
[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_04]: now from a keeper's perspective Grinus this is only second match playing with all these
[00:29:22] [SPEAKER_04]: players out there does it take you a while to jive with your defense in front of you and
[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_04]: you know start being that kind of vocal you know giving commands telling people where they
[00:29:33] [SPEAKER_04]: need to go or is that something that's just ingrained in keepers it's ingrained in keepers and
[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_02]: as a keeper the first thing you do when you come to a new team is that you find
[00:29:46] [SPEAKER_02]: your center back you find that one guy your captain the main dude your focal point
[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_02]: and that's your go to guys from there on out and you build that connection that's usually the first
[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_02]: connection really have or there as a keeper and defender because when you come onto the field
[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_02]: if you don't know anyone's name but you know your center back's name you can still play a whole
[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_02]: 90 minutes you can get it figured out but if you don't know anybody's name at all
[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_02]: you're not gonna have a good day so I think
[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_02]: trying to figure still figure out everything but it's Bert's still getting the ball rolling
[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_02]: here with the battery and two games in it's a lot of excitement going forward and I think that
[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_02]: we do have great potential to easily make this home opener a possibly a three four zero win
[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_04]: I hope so we're gonna talk about New Mexico here in a second we didn't talk about subs I don't think
[00:30:46] [SPEAKER_04]: they really affected the the gameplay at all the one person didn't get on the pitch I think was Jake
[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_04]: you think there's any reason why we didn't sub mouse I think we had did we use all five of our
[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah because uh because Josh Josh went on he subbed on in the 62nd minute but then he
[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_02]: had to get subbed off late for injury that's exactly what I was guys I was wondering why the
[00:31:12] [SPEAKER_04]: cover they'd get out there and and get some minutes in them because it seems like we're
[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_04]: trying to get some good rotation get minutes in people's legs the long season ahead of us
[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_04]: some positives from these two matches are particularly this match that as you as a team
[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_04]: would take away from it I'm looking at numbers like what's positive for me is just the passing
[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_04]: and we're second in the usl with uh 10082 passes we're second in the usl on past percentage at 83%
[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_04]: last year at the end of the season I know it's just two matches in
[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_04]: we're six of them passes 18th and actually percentage and so this you know probably gonna
[00:31:54] [SPEAKER_04]: talk about a lot of the season is Maloy Maloy Maloy and I think Smith adds those numbers
[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_04]: um but I think for me that's a positive we're consistent so far with these two games and
[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_04]: hopefully we keep that passing number of consistency up over uh New Mexico are there any other positives
[00:32:12] [SPEAKER_03]: you can think of? I mean I really think just the players coming off the bench don't disrupt our
[00:32:20] [SPEAKER_03]: game style don't disrupt our play they actually enhance it a little more um I'd like to see
[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Torres play a little bit more I know I got 45 the first game I think just a little over 30 in this one
[00:32:33] [SPEAKER_03]: so as an attacker it's kind of tough to get going until you get like 10 more minutes in you but um
[00:32:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean yeah it's a huge positive just possessing the ball not letting the other team have it
[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_03]: it's very good chance of winning that game if they never touched the ball
[00:32:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Speaking of Torres he's been out there only a couple minutes he has two yellow cards already
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_04]: passion so passion that's what I'm gonna truck it up to also hey let's think about key players next
[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_02]: match Ryan I think a really exciting key player for us is gonna be md Myers um he's going I think
[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_02]: he's gonna get more playing time he was kind of exciting watching him come off the bench and
[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_02]: get those last 15 20 minutes but just like how Pat said earlier in the episode with all the crosses
[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_02]: that we had you know it was 26 27 crosses that we had throughout the entire game md's a really big
[00:33:33] [SPEAKER_02]: guy and he knows how to head the ball with power behind it and that's where I think we're gonna
[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_02]: have a lot of success um so I want to highlight that I want to I think it's gonna happen this
[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_04]: weekend I saw a social media post by the battery and it says the doctors or the doc is in and I didn't
[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_04]: get it at first and it took me a minute said oh md I got it now so so I think there should be a
[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_04]: chant or something along the doctor line that maybe we can drum up in the future yeah may have any uh
[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_03]: maybe just on that you go with the uh classic doctor doctor what did he do I guess he scored
[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_04]: another goal for you okay we had that recorded so we'll pass that out to the masses as they walk in
[00:34:17] [SPEAKER_04]: so any other thoughts about the roots that we can take away from this you don't have to play
[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_04]: him again this season last season I remember that keeper he laid on the ground a lot he might be
[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_04]: one of the best in usl but he just he wastes more time I was writing down how long he was
[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_04]: in between getting the ball by the time he released it it would be on around 15 20 seconds
[00:34:40] [SPEAKER_04]: almost every time so you tell he was trying to do something speaking of dark arts him in Rodriguez
[00:34:47] [SPEAKER_04]: so first match home opener this Saturday it's gonna do mexico they have very similar numbers we do
[00:34:55] [SPEAKER_04]: kickoffs at 7 30 regiment's going to be out and forced out in the blue lot if you're
[00:35:01] [SPEAKER_04]: new to the battery if you're new to just charleston you come to the match go out there those people
[00:35:08] [SPEAKER_04]: the regiment out there they'll take care of you that was too friendly of a group of people
[00:35:13] [SPEAKER_04]: so walk over there say hi they'll get you in the right direction a lot of times they'll feed you
[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_04]: and they might give you a drink or two for just hang out over there but it's a good group of
[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_04]: people so the new mexico matches also our first eastern conference match ryan how do we attack
[00:35:33] [SPEAKER_02]: this think we go into it the same thing we went into with oakland but obviously it's going to be a lot
[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_02]: more exciting being at home for the first time this season defending the east at home you know the
[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_02]: last time we played at our home field we tragically lost and the penalty shoot out in the final
[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_02]: we had a lot of great moments last year a lot of great success and I don't see a stopping for
[00:36:01] [SPEAKER_02]: I think we're going to find success early but then I also think that we're going to be able to
[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_02]: fold off on the counters from new mexico because they're going to be pressing forward and I think
[00:36:11] [SPEAKER_02]: we're going to exploit them and hopefully get another one or two in the goal for us yeah I think
[00:36:19] [SPEAKER_03]: it's going to be a good game for us just having the backing of our fans I mean honestly
[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_03]: it feeds into the players the players you know this ryan as a player you have fans behind you and
[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_03]: you almost play to another level because you don't want to disappoint everyone that came out to support
[00:36:37] [SPEAKER_03]: you and everyone who's there for you so I think we really need to pack this stadium and just get
[00:36:45] [SPEAKER_03]: everyone out there chanting cheering and get behind the boys and get them w for the first
[00:36:49] [SPEAKER_04]: time this season I think that's a fantastic idea and I think I'll join I think I'll join in I
[00:36:56] [SPEAKER_04]: might even show up a little early have a beer to learn some new songs some new chants so we get in
[00:37:02] [SPEAKER_04]: there we're all chanting as one and people participating as much as they can and having a great time
[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_04]: because the stadium is a great place you haven't been there before got some great food got some
[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_04]: great drink stations it's always warm and welcoming there's not a bad seat or bad standing
[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_04]: area I think it's an improvement for where we were last ryan what is one of your favorite
[00:37:24] [SPEAKER_02]: things the stadium well now it's definitely having the another bev card down by the south
[00:37:35] [SPEAKER_02]: supporter stand before we would have to almost go on the opposite side of the stadium anytime you
[00:37:42] [SPEAKER_02]: would want to drink on the south side I voice my opinion to someone and they made it happen and
[00:37:49] [SPEAKER_02]: it was really awesome to see that they cared about the fans and what they had to say because
[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_02]: I made one comment I don't know who I had said it to but it was the very next match there was a
[00:37:59] [SPEAKER_02]: bev card there and they have almost doubled in sales and you know that's what we're here for
[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_02]: we're going to spend money if you give us the opportunity to and we want to we want to
[00:38:09] [SPEAKER_02]: enjoy the entertainment more and how can you help us enjoy it more you know so that all feeds
[00:38:14] [SPEAKER_02]: into the atmosphere and everything I think Charleston is going to go all in for this home
[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_02]: opener and I think the atmosphere is just going to be amazing yeah I think that's an excellent point
[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_03]: because that definitely pertains to myself and my needs and my wants but my wife's wants it's nice
[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_03]: having a little froze a truck out there and being able to share the drinks and not just be too
[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_03]: selfish on my end which is it's great so bring your wife she'll love it too and bring
[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_04]: your uber app definitely bring your uber one thing that I'm gonna really enjoy Saturday is
[00:38:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I have somebody I know that has a brand new grill is he gonna bring it out Ryan I am bringing it out
[00:39:00] [SPEAKER_02]: got a brand new Blackstone grill for my wife and I'm super excited to be grilling out this
[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_02]: season are you doing smash burgers and stuff like that uh yeah so we're either doing smash burgers
[00:39:11] [SPEAKER_02]: or we're gonna do chicken teriyaki skewers so exciting you gotta do hobachi style stuff
[00:39:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think you can go wrong either way either way you can't go wrong
[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_02]: so we're gonna be there in the yellow parking lot for the battered game so follow this mouse
[00:39:30] [SPEAKER_04]: you can find us on Facebook and scram and a little bit on x we also have a website
