In this episode of the Cannon Crüe Podcast, the Crüe breaks down Charleston Battery's hard-fought 1-1 draw against San Antonio FC. The battle on the pitch may not have been as legendary as the Alamo, but it sure had its fair share of heroic moments and questionable tactics!
Join us as we discuss standout performances, including ¡Torres metiendo un golazo!, analyze the defensive struggles, and take a closer look at the pivotal moments that shaped the result. And yes, we can’t ignore the referee's decisions—he may as well have been defending the Alamo with how blind he was to some of those calls! Was this a fair outcome or did the Battery deserve a more decisive victory? We’ll tackle that and much more.
Tune in for all this, the usual Crüe banter, and a look ahead to what’s next for the Battery. Remember, unlike the Alamo, this battle ended in a stalemate!
[00:00:03] Welcome to Cannon Crue, a weekly podcast discussing the Charleston Battery.
[00:00:21] Your host, Granite, will be joined by other defenders of the fleet from the black and yellow
[00:00:26] supporters section.
[00:00:27] And together they will help fortify and conquer.
[00:00:30] They are the Cannon Crue.
[00:00:35] Welcome to the Cannon Crue Podcast.
[00:00:37] This is Granite and I'm joined by Gunner, the super dog.
[00:00:40] Hey Gunner, what's up?
[00:00:41] How are you?
[00:00:43] Fantastic.
[00:00:45] And his partner, Patrick, how are you Patrick?
[00:00:48] What's going on everybody?
[00:00:51] And last and least, Ryan.
[00:00:56] How are you Granite?
[00:00:57] I'm doing alright but you have no beast with you.
[00:00:59] I thought this was our daily dog day.
[00:01:02] They're getting fed right now.
[00:01:04] Mine's a long ways away, both of them.
[00:01:06] They probably wish they were getting fed right now.
[00:01:08] We're here to discuss a little bit about our past match on August 31st in San Antonio.
[00:01:14] We did not get beat 7-0 like we did last time we met up with them.
[00:01:19] But it wasn't necessarily the best result we could have done.
[00:01:22] Amazon Spring Company had a good turn out there, not the best but quite a few people.
[00:01:28] Our staff was all hyped up, had their battery hats on, ready to roll and had a pretty
[00:01:34] good time.
[00:01:35] I think it was a great setup at Edmunds Oast and food's always good, beer's always good.
[00:01:42] It's a good time to be here especially with the new flavors out.
[00:01:46] Always got to get that Oktoberfest special.
[00:01:50] Didn't they have a cinnamon latte or something like that too?
[00:01:53] Apple cider donut beer.
[00:01:56] That's what it was.
[00:01:57] It was really good.
[00:01:57] I was close.
[00:01:59] Tanner was there having a good time.
[00:02:01] So it was kind of fun to sit next to him.
[00:02:04] Especially when we scored goals because he's a big guy and I thought he was going to kill
[00:02:07] me.
[00:02:08] I really thought he was.
[00:02:09] He was so excited.
[00:02:10] I think he took a couple of tables out and a couple of the staff out on the floor.
[00:02:14] But one fun bit of news I heard today, I didn't realize that after our thrashing
[00:02:20] of Orange County they dismissed their coach.
[00:02:23] So they picked up another coach.
[00:02:26] I think it happened right after the match from what I heard today.
[00:02:30] So that's kind of fun.
[00:02:31] You know, we're causing changes.
[00:02:33] That's a long, lonely flight back to California.
[00:02:36] So let's talk about what's staring us right in the face right now is Nick.
[00:02:40] Nick being transferred in January over to CD Castellon I believe.
[00:02:49] So I mean it is confirmed he'll be going in January so we still have him for the
[00:02:55] rest of the year.
[00:02:57] I think that would have been really bad business if you let the guy go in for a record.
[00:03:03] Just take off at the end of the season when you need a most.
[00:03:07] But I don't know, you guys, I feel like this move has been coming for a while before
[00:03:12] me's been in.
[00:03:14] I couldn't see anyone not putting a bit in trying to take him away.
[00:03:19] I think it's fantastic because everybody's eyes are always set on the MLS but it's
[00:03:24] pretty interesting when you're making moves and sales that eventually end up in
[00:03:27] Europe which is, you know, despite maybe Brazil and that part of the world is
[00:03:34] undisputed, that's where you need to go to make it big.
[00:03:38] No, it's actually amazing business with the battery have been able to do in
[00:03:42] the last two seasons because you look at Fidel Barajas and you look at Trey
[00:03:45] Mewes and both of them were able to make successful MLS transfers last year
[00:03:49] after the year Barajas had.
[00:03:52] And now he's got national team call-ups and he's looking for another transfer
[00:03:56] move and to back that up this year and have, you know, Nick Markanik coming
[00:04:01] through trying to break this league goalscoring record.
[00:04:05] And then now you're able to send him over to Europe as well.
[00:04:08] So a lot of different teams around the world are paying attention to the
[00:04:13] USL championship because it's not just the battery selling players over
[00:04:17] to Europe now.
[00:04:17] You got Louisville sent about two to three players as well and a few other clubs.
[00:04:23] So it's actually quite nice seeing all the different diverse groups and
[00:04:28] areas coming in and trying to pick apart to USL in a way, trying to take
[00:04:32] some talent elsewhere.
[00:04:34] Yeah, it's nice not having the MLS whooping in.
[00:04:37] So I mean just looking at the top 20 trampers from the USL championship
[00:04:44] and about half of them have gone to MLS sides or MLS who sides or
[00:04:51] academies of MLS team.
[00:04:53] So it's kind of nice to break away from that and not have a player
[00:04:58] with so much promise just go into a league that the feature has been
[00:05:03] kind of a huge talking point for a lot of US pundits and a lot of us
[00:05:07] soccer fans of almost an area where players go to kill their
[00:05:12] career because there is no future opportunity.
[00:05:16] King we've seen it with a ton of MLS teams that they just hoard young talent,
[00:05:21] sign them to big deals, leave them and don't let them go on loan.
[00:05:25] Don't sell them over to Europe and then they kind of just don't develop
[00:05:28] because their youth academies and training programs aren't that up
[00:05:32] that way as much as Europe is.
[00:05:35] So I'm excited to see them go to Spain.
[00:05:38] The second division, which I think is going to be a lot easier
[00:05:41] of a fit than the first division.
[00:05:45] That's for sure because you're not going to go from USL side
[00:05:49] competition and then just be thrown in against some of the best names in the world.
[00:05:54] So hopefully he can develop over there and we can see him
[00:05:58] back state side in the future.
[00:06:01] I believe it is pronounced city Castillo
[00:06:06] and looks like to have a nice little pitch
[00:06:08] and some training pitches in that part of Spain.
[00:06:12] So some of the cool things to from us is also the Salon clauses, right?
[00:06:18] Salon clause is a quite a good deal on our end.
[00:06:21] So currently the way the market is looking at more canik
[00:06:25] he's his current market values 350,000.
[00:06:29] But what CD offered us was 175, but 10 percent of future sales.
[00:06:36] So if more canik were to sell for about five million,
[00:06:40] you could see about five hundred thousand coming our way to the battery.
[00:06:45] So that's that's excellent business because then you change that 175
[00:06:49] into almost closer to 700.
[00:06:54] We almost have a million dollar man now.
[00:06:56] That's a really cool.
[00:06:57] Yeah, which would rival Fidel going for over a mill himself
[00:07:01] so that the back to back to business by the battery
[00:07:06] creating and generating some more revenue for the club to go out
[00:07:09] and buy some more young talent and bust in them
[00:07:12] and get to see these guys shine at a USL championship level
[00:07:16] and create a name for themselves and kind of cool to be able
[00:07:20] to follow their soccer paths from here on out.
[00:07:24] And speaking of another player that's kind of going for a temporary bit.
[00:07:29] Guess who got called up to national duty?
[00:07:33] Our captain, Leland Archer.
[00:07:36] The one, the only.
[00:07:38] And a very critical part of this even to.
[00:07:42] Well, so it's not it's not like the end of the world.
[00:07:45] Right? So yes, we will lose Leland
[00:07:49] for this upcoming game against Sacramento.
[00:07:53] As Leland has international duties
[00:07:55] for a game being played on the seventh and the 10th of September.
[00:08:01] We do play our set our next game after Sacramento
[00:08:05] on the 14th in Colorado.
[00:08:07] So I'd likely not see Archer playing that one
[00:08:10] as they probably set him out, let him come back and get recouped.
[00:08:14] So sitting out two games, both against Western Conference teams.
[00:08:19] One's home, one's away.
[00:08:21] They're both toss ups, but I like Samuel Beek
[00:08:23] sliding in for that home game.
[00:08:25] And I think that Colorado is going to be a lot closer than we want it to be.
[00:08:30] Yeah, I think just the issue is
[00:08:33] and granted and I, I think can relate a little more than you, Ryan,
[00:08:37] just from our other club we have an interest in is seeing players
[00:08:42] go on on international duty and pick up an injury
[00:08:46] when they don't need to for games that are super important.
[00:08:50] And I don't want it out there in the world, but like
[00:08:54] this is the concern with players going and playing for their national teams
[00:08:57] is he's our captain, he's our biggest investment.
[00:09:00] He's our leader.
[00:09:01] He's going to be there for the playoffs.
[00:09:03] You don't need to risk injury at this point in the season with
[00:09:07] what seven games left, six games left before playoffs.
[00:09:12] You you really need to keep everyone healthy, maybe limit the number of minutes
[00:09:16] they're playing every night a little bit as opposed to
[00:09:20] let's add on another 180 minutes on international duty, plus flights
[00:09:25] coming back and then like I don't think we're going
[00:09:30] to sit on my think he'll come on and play for a game against Colorado.
[00:09:34] And so not super excited with that, just the amount of wear and tear
[00:09:38] that puts on a player.
[00:09:41] Yeah, if we rush into that Colorado game, I mean,
[00:09:44] just like how you mentioned it, that's a ton of travel time
[00:09:47] that he's going to get.
[00:09:49] I didn't think of like that, Pat.
[00:09:51] It's rest time.
[00:09:51] He's on an airplane.
[00:09:52] He's probably, you know, not in coach.
[00:09:54] So he can rest in when you're above six to once you hit six to
[00:09:58] there is no rest on a plane.
[00:09:59] I'm saying he's probably in the, you know, the business class.
[00:10:02] So he's he's good to go.
[00:10:05] Have you have you seen him?
[00:10:06] He's like six five.
[00:10:07] Trinidad doesn't matter.
[00:10:09] Tobago, not France, right?
[00:10:12] Yeah, well, well different.
[00:10:15] Have all schedules, I would think.
[00:10:18] Just a different airplane rides.
[00:10:20] Yeah.
[00:10:21] Greatest thing he's going to be flying air France.
[00:10:24] Oh, he will be.
[00:10:27] He will not be on air France flying to Trinidad.
[00:10:29] You don't know that.
[00:10:31] He's on the guarantee you probably like three lines.
[00:10:35] Maybe.
[00:10:36] Anyways, that's fantastic for Leland and whichever mode of
[00:10:41] transportation he so chooses, I'm sure he's going to he's
[00:10:44] going to turn out well with it.
[00:10:46] And one of the other things who replaces him, we talked about
[00:10:49] beak, right?
[00:10:50] That's all we got.
[00:10:52] Yeah, Samuel Beek will come in and.
[00:10:55] You have Graham Smith sitting right next to him.
[00:10:58] And they've had zero playing time.
[00:11:01] They had a couple minutes the other night a couple weeks ago.
[00:11:04] Yeah, I mean it might be nice to see a little effort from
[00:11:07] some players will maybe a little running around in the
[00:11:10] backfield on like.
[00:11:12] This last game will touch on here in a moment, but
[00:11:15] maybe a little less standing around a little more effort
[00:11:18] going at the guy's ball set of.
[00:11:21] They call him eye tackles.
[00:11:24] Regis.
[00:11:25] Did you say eye tackles?
[00:11:26] Yeah, where you just look at the guy.
[00:11:28] So the eye tackles because it seems like we were trying to do
[00:11:31] that a lot.
[00:11:32] Ryan's disagreeing.
[00:11:34] No, he's agreeing with green.
[00:11:35] The eye tackle analysis.
[00:11:39] So yeah, let's move on down.
[00:11:41] Let's talk about or starting 11.
[00:11:44] We think of Robbie coming in for Seggburs.
[00:11:47] You know, I was kind of surprised with that and not
[00:11:51] having, you know, Josh track back there.
[00:11:55] As you're outside back, like I understand, Jack, maybe
[00:11:57] just a left side defender, but still to throw him in on
[00:12:01] the right side.
[00:12:02] I would have thought that would have been a better fit,
[00:12:04] but it was great seeing Robbie back out there and
[00:12:06] getting a start up for him.
[00:12:08] And think it's a little weird, right?
[00:12:10] Because we talked earlier in the year when you
[00:12:13] have all these options and rotating them around.
[00:12:15] And now it's kind of drone accustomed to seeing
[00:12:18] us starting 11 and maybe giving one guy a break.
[00:12:23] But now it's like, we're just going to switch it up
[00:12:26] completely and put a guy just randomly in who's
[00:12:29] not as natural position to cover when you have,
[00:12:32] like you said, Ryan, Drac on the bench, ready to go.
[00:12:37] It just didn't make sense to me.
[00:12:39] Drac's a drug play.
[00:12:40] Yeah.
[00:12:41] So yeah, it doesn't make sense to me either.
[00:12:43] I mean, because it kind of kind of telling
[00:12:45] them maybe some of our players and their
[00:12:48] non-ability to play in other position.
[00:12:51] I just like to see what's going on that training pitch.
[00:12:55] Now it could be something on or off the training pitch
[00:12:58] that's being seen by Coach Perman on that one.
[00:13:01] But just from a fan looking at the actual sheet
[00:13:04] and what they have, you know, that just still doesn't
[00:13:05] make a ton of sense.
[00:13:08] Luckily though, we're still solid in the back
[00:13:10] and I know we're going to talk about it here shortly,
[00:13:13] but man, what a game Grini had.
[00:13:16] I think this was probably my favorite game to watch
[00:13:20] of Grini's.
[00:13:23] Everything he demonstrated in the back,
[00:13:25] there was a bit of times where there was a few confusion.
[00:13:29] He handled those situations really well and then came up
[00:13:32] with some of the most crucial saves that were so beautiful to watch.
[00:13:37] He did, you know?
[00:13:38] He saved us.
[00:13:40] We were to walk out there having no points
[00:13:42] if it wasn't for Grini.
[00:13:43] And there was the first shot, the first save he made.
[00:13:45] The ball looked like it was moving kind of slow.
[00:13:48] When I first saw the shot taken,
[00:13:50] he got his hand on it, but then realized,
[00:13:52] man, that's pretty close range and that's a lot of ground
[00:13:55] Grini had to cover just by leaping to the side
[00:13:58] to get that ball.
[00:14:00] I mean, it could have been 3-0 going into half time
[00:14:03] with the amount of saves he was making.
[00:14:06] And that one right before half two and added time
[00:14:10] is the bottom right hand corner save.
[00:14:12] That one, that one, that was a goal all day.
[00:14:15] That one should have been a goal all day long
[00:14:16] and he absolutely robbed them.
[00:14:18] But yeah, Pat, I absolutely agree with you.
[00:14:21] It easily could have been and should have been 3-0
[00:14:23] if it wasn't for Grini.
[00:14:25] And that's what like, I'm sure we'll touch on Torres,
[00:14:28] but seeing that Torres got the man of the match,
[00:14:31] I thought it was kind of a little bit of a knock
[00:14:34] because I thought Grini was my man of the match
[00:14:36] or even keeping us in it.
[00:14:38] The entire time to give us the chance to come back
[00:14:41] and tie it up.
[00:14:42] So I don't know.
[00:14:43] Huge shout out to Grini for playing off his ass again,
[00:14:47] which he always does in big moments when he has to make up
[00:14:50] for the rest of the team kind of being lackluster.
[00:14:54] Yeah, maybe we'll call him both co-men of the match
[00:14:58] because I think both of them added equally to us escaping
[00:15:02] with a point and bringing it back to Charleston.
[00:15:06] Both played massive roles
[00:15:09] and contributing to the team's success that night,
[00:15:12] but both had different roles.
[00:15:15] Absolutely.
[00:15:16] And we need both of them equally as well.
[00:15:20] You know, all night in Torres is one of my favorite players,
[00:15:23] if not my favorite player.
[00:15:24] And all night Torres was putting balls in
[00:15:27] and getting crosses in.
[00:15:28] Sometimes he's taking some shots that maybe he shouldn't take,
[00:15:32] but man, when he lines that up,
[00:15:34] those shots sometimes are rockets
[00:15:37] and get past keepers very easily.
[00:15:40] I mean, we've seen him score from more ridiculous shots
[00:15:43] than what he was taking.
[00:15:44] So, mind as well, trying to start a little fire up front.
[00:15:49] Yeah, he did from that free kick.
[00:15:53] I mean, that's kind of the range he's deadly at
[00:15:55] in trying to get keepers.
[00:15:59] I don't know if that young keeper could have stopped that
[00:16:01] no matter what, so it didn't really matter.
[00:16:04] Yeah, it was a weird spot.
[00:16:05] Front post, front post quarter going in on that.
[00:16:11] I want to take a couple of seconds to talk about Chapman
[00:16:13] because he kind of filled in that spot where Aaron is
[00:16:17] or you know, back there.
[00:16:19] But there was a couple times he was just watching.
[00:16:23] He was just ball watching instead of being that active force
[00:16:26] that Aaron is all over the pitch.
[00:16:29] Sometimes Chapman as good as he is,
[00:16:31] he's really good on the ball.
[00:16:32] He's really got an IQ about him
[00:16:34] and he can really make some great passes.
[00:16:37] But there was a couple of times where he was just like he switched off.
[00:16:41] I think you can go right down the middle with all of them.
[00:16:44] And this is where maybe also it's a prize he causes not starting
[00:16:49] because he is that kind of momentum boost.
[00:16:51] If you're missing Maloy, that he'll run around.
[00:16:54] He'll be the energy guy and he'll create that kind of seal
[00:16:58] for the rest of the team of like, hey,
[00:17:00] step it up a little bit.
[00:17:01] I'm putting in the effort.
[00:17:03] The rest of you start putting in a little more effort.
[00:17:06] You can say the same thing with Chapman as you can for Rodriguez.
[00:17:10] I mean, you could say for almost every midfielder out there
[00:17:14] like Torres is great to see what was offensively.
[00:17:18] Defensively, he was just walking around.
[00:17:20] He wasn't really attacking the ball to try and win it back,
[00:17:23] which is kind of what we've grown accustomed to seeing from him.
[00:17:26] But yeah, I don't know.
[00:17:28] We definitely lacked the energy for a while there.
[00:17:31] I'll say that.
[00:17:32] Speaking of lacking energy,
[00:17:34] you got anything you want to add to that, Ryan?
[00:17:37] No.
[00:17:38] I just agree with that
[00:17:40] and seeing how he's still trying to find himself
[00:17:45] into this first team and wanting to get more minutes.
[00:17:50] You're kind of surprised by it.
[00:17:52] You're given this opportunity.
[00:17:55] Yes, he went to a different team.
[00:17:58] I believe he came from Hartford on loan to us.
[00:18:02] So coming from bottom of the USL,
[00:18:04] now you're on a team who's definitely going to go into the playoffs
[00:18:08] and you're flat footed.
[00:18:10] There's no little pick me up.
[00:18:12] There's no extra energy that you're bringing in.
[00:18:14] It kind of just leaves us wondering on the sideline,
[00:18:17] why did we go out and get you?
[00:18:18] What did we get you for other than just filling in the void from Aloy right now?
[00:18:23] Because I was kind of excited to get him.
[00:18:25] I saw some clips of him playing and everything,
[00:18:27] but I hadn't seen anything from him since he's come in.
[00:18:29] I think when he's gotten an assist,
[00:18:31] but he kicked the ball across the six-year-old line,
[00:18:33] how hard is that to do?
[00:18:34] I think he's good on the ball.
[00:18:36] When he's more than that, it seems like almost the CDM role,
[00:18:41] and he's got some presence about him there.
[00:18:43] But on the defending side, he was just, I'm not going back.
[00:18:47] And I was like, well, that's kind of what your job is, right?
[00:18:50] Because him and...
[00:18:50] Yeah, it's a CDM.
[00:18:51] Yeah, him and Alan are supposed to be back to patrol
[00:18:55] in front of our two backs.
[00:18:56] And if he just stand and watching,
[00:18:58] we saw a result of that when San Antonio scored a goal on us.
[00:19:04] Did you see, taking note in the first half,
[00:19:07] we can go back and watch,
[00:19:09] but you saw a lot more defending from Nick Markanik
[00:19:14] than I have seen all season.
[00:19:18] And that came from him having to track all the way back
[00:19:21] because at times there'd be a midfielder or two
[00:19:24] higher than Nick trying to get back in time.
[00:19:27] And Nick would just fly back trying to defend.
[00:19:29] Yeah, what's up with his shoulder?
[00:19:31] He kept grabbing his shoulder and there was a couple times
[00:19:34] he'd get some medical treatment.
[00:19:37] I'm hoping it's just a knock.
[00:19:39] It's just like one of those things where it's like,
[00:19:40] you know, it's just discomfort because he looked like he played on.
[00:19:44] So it looked like it was just something to where
[00:19:45] he has to get on through the night and sleep on it.
[00:19:48] I didn't know if it's from all those, you know,
[00:19:51] left-footed volleys he was trying to put in the back.
[00:19:53] The goal kind of, you know, he picked up a pinched nerve
[00:19:56] or something like that on his shoulder.
[00:19:58] I got a stinger.
[00:19:59] Very well done, Nick.
[00:20:01] He was really trying to make the tying goal a rocket.
[00:20:04] He was and he was putting it way up in the stands,
[00:20:07] way up in the stands.
[00:20:08] One time it was kind of interesting.
[00:20:10] He had the ball in front of the goal
[00:20:11] and he had on his right foot
[00:20:13] and you tell him he ain't taking no shot
[00:20:15] with his right foot.
[00:20:16] So he kind of laid it off to somebody else
[00:20:18] but it was kind of interesting because he was in that spot
[00:20:20] where if he was on his left foot
[00:20:22] he would have taken that but obviously,
[00:20:24] and that might be Nick's kind of, you know,
[00:20:28] his Achilles heel is that he is very, very left-footed.
[00:20:32] I think I heard somebody say
[00:20:32] 19 of his 20-some goals were all from left foot.
[00:20:37] Yeah, I mean, mentioning that, granite,
[00:20:41] he took that shot right footed that blasted over
[00:20:44] and then like a clear cut,
[00:20:46] he has the space in an even better position
[00:20:49] and he just passes it off,
[00:20:51] not in like a better spot for his teammate
[00:20:53] to take a good shot.
[00:20:54] He just passed it off
[00:20:55] and he's like, what are you doing, man?
[00:20:57] You're leading goal scorer in this league for a reason.
[00:21:00] Just hit it.
[00:21:00] No one's going to be mad if it goes wide.
[00:21:03] No, somebody take a shot
[00:21:04] because that's kind of what we've always,
[00:21:06] always kind of complaining about
[00:21:09] is that we can't score goals if we're not shooting.
[00:21:11] Well, it makes it more difficult at least.
[00:21:14] Now, the other thing, let's talk about the referee real quick.
[00:21:17] I have not been on a rant about referees,
[00:21:19] but this guy...
[00:21:20] Here we go.
[00:21:21] Lock it up, boys.
[00:21:21] Get ready.
[00:21:22] Let me tell you what.
[00:21:24] I don't know why there was not a PK
[00:21:27] called for taking out MD.
[00:21:29] For Myers just getting head slams into the knee
[00:21:33] and just being like, no ball.
[00:21:37] I don't know what the referee saw there different than...
[00:21:42] Well, the announcers eventually come around
[00:21:44] and said, yeah, that probably should have been a PK,
[00:21:46] but they were obviously slanted towards San Antonio
[00:21:50] because the one announcer saying,
[00:21:52] well, the keeper got all ball.
[00:21:54] Clearly did not get all ball.
[00:21:56] Apparently the referee thought that he got all ball
[00:21:59] because he awarded a corner kick to us.
[00:22:03] And when you watch the review
[00:22:04] and even when watching it at full speed,
[00:22:07] it's obviously come off the bottom of MD's foot.
[00:22:11] But that's kind of what I would call a foul.
[00:22:15] When you take a player out like that,
[00:22:19] no matter if you use your face, your hands,
[00:22:22] it's still a foul.
[00:22:23] He's challenging and it's kind of careless and reckless.
[00:22:27] And so I do not know why there was no PK.
[00:22:30] Any thoughts?
[00:22:32] No idea why there wasn't a PK
[00:22:34] and it's not like the ref was card shy.
[00:22:37] I mean, he handed out plenty during the match.
[00:22:43] Five yellow cards to San Antonio in the 80th minute and after.
[00:22:46] And there should have been one before.
[00:22:49] They earned every one of them.
[00:22:50] Two of those players should have been their second.
[00:22:53] I don't know how other teams get by with running their mouths
[00:22:57] of referees the way they do.
[00:22:59] So many warnings get given out in the first half
[00:23:02] to other teams and we get nothing.
[00:23:03] We're immediately shown a card
[00:23:05] and you see these other teams are their forwards like Max from Detroit
[00:23:10] and like how we just played.
[00:23:15] The team we just played.
[00:23:16] Orange County.
[00:23:17] San Antonio, they're top two strikers.
[00:23:22] Just throwing people around, shoving them out of bounds doing late hits
[00:23:25] and then they just get a talk into it with the referee.
[00:23:27] He just comes up to them, walks them backwards,
[00:23:30] has a little chat and that's it.
[00:23:32] Hernandez I think for the team, that was one.
[00:23:36] Let's see Conway is sitting on the ground and he comes up,
[00:23:38] puts a knee in his back so he causes jumps up there to his defense
[00:23:42] and kind of backs him up and then Hernandez starts grabbing his jersey
[00:23:46] and pushing them down now.
[00:23:48] It causes them to do a little acting there.
[00:23:50] He was constantly winding people up and in their face.
[00:23:54] There was another incident before that where he was all in Juan David's face
[00:24:01] and basically chest bump and I'm trying to get him out of the way
[00:24:05] and everything else and then Wander's off.
[00:24:07] Referee lost control of it.
[00:24:08] When you look at the one player, not gonna butcher his name,
[00:24:12] I don't know if I can give a shit if I butcher his name.
[00:24:15] Signorus or whatever his name was.
[00:24:18] Senor?
[00:24:20] Senor, hang on.
[00:24:24] Selaatje neck, whatever his name is, five fouls.
[00:24:26] Five fouls and then he acts surprised when he gets a yellow
[00:24:29] on the fifth foul.
[00:24:31] Well, it's called, in case he doesn't know that maybe he's not that intelligent,
[00:24:35] it's called persistent offenses and Referee's hand him out
[00:24:39] when all of a sudden you've got like five or six fouls
[00:24:42] and he acts shocked in that.
[00:24:43] I don't understand why other teams get by with so much bullshit
[00:24:50] and I look back, I think it was one of our first matches
[00:24:53] and Torres kind of kicked, put the ball to the sideline
[00:24:57] and they gave him a card for time wasting
[00:25:00] and there's no inconsistency
[00:25:02] and I don't know if it's because of the regionalists of these referees.
[00:25:08] I don't know.
[00:25:09] Yeah, I mean, I think for sure we can at least agree.
[00:25:12] penalty not given, huge miss call.
[00:25:15] Luckily the battery didn't throw it away, kept sliding, came back
[00:25:18] and at least got the equalizer which I think was well deserved
[00:25:22] in the second half more than the first half of them
[00:25:26] keeping it nil nil because I really thought we played so poorly
[00:25:29] we should have been down one or two going into the break.
[00:25:32] So hopefully they don't continue this in the next few games
[00:25:36] because it's not going to be easy.
[00:25:38] Now this next game is going to be a good one.
[00:25:42] I mean, it can easily go south for us quickly if we don't lock in.
[00:25:48] So what do we need to change?
[00:25:49] What are we doing fundamentally wrong?
[00:25:51] We go in and we blow past somebody.
[00:25:53] Yeah, I think it's all energy.
[00:25:55] We're so flat footed.
[00:25:58] Like I don't know how they don't get up like we seem to save it
[00:26:02] for home games to like amp themselves up or like get it going early on.
[00:26:08] I mean you saw it with Louisville they came out so flat
[00:26:12] not even trying to play not even trying to go for a ball
[00:26:15] and just being pressed and giving up almost like 10 minutes
[00:26:20] into that game of like well hell we can't run with these guys
[00:26:23] the whole day and it's like we play the same style we press
[00:26:27] before we win the ball back high up the field.
[00:26:31] You got to bring that from the first whistle
[00:26:34] and keep it going in order to make the other team feel that pressure.
[00:26:38] Otherwise they play one long ball you have four guys like in this
[00:26:42] game against San Antonio going to tackle the ball but like
[00:26:45] kind of half hardly throwing a leg in there and the guy just dribbles out of it
[00:26:49] like we need someone to either commit in and if you don't get the ball
[00:26:54] you get the guy and it's a foul and he's not dribbling through 20 yards at a time
[00:26:59] we either need that or we need the guys to just keep that high press
[00:27:03] and just win the ball back and force the other team to create the mistakes
[00:27:07] because it's worked for us all year.
[00:27:10] Yeah counterattacks are kicking our ass and it's like we're being caught up
[00:27:14] in a forward position and especially this when we concede this goal
[00:27:18] I don't know what Leland was doing way up on the sideline about the midway line
[00:27:23] way out of position which he went to like excuse me
[00:27:28] he went to head the ball and went over him or something
[00:27:31] and just set it up for the San Antonio player to pick it up
[00:27:35] and then go in towards goal and then as we talked earlier
[00:27:39] but he's kind of watching ball watching there we have three midfielders
[00:27:43] trying to track back that aren't trying hard enough and the guy gets some miserable little topo pass
[00:27:50] and we're just standing there looking foolish.
[00:27:54] It's another situation you can look back on
[00:27:57] some of the guys that we let go this season like Gutierrez
[00:28:03] as much as he is kind of similar to Torres and you can't really please everyone
[00:28:09] he is a guy that you can sub on or at least have Torres be like
[00:28:12] hey you got to keep working man defensively as well as offensively
[00:28:16] because we'll put another player on in the next game or you'll come off at the 60 minute mark
[00:28:23] which we used to see for the entire first half of the season
[00:28:27] another one with who's the guy we just gave to San Antonio
[00:28:32] Blacapa like huge energy guy these are the guys right now that our injuries have stacked up
[00:28:39] to some of our more high energy players
[00:28:42] that we really could use this off the bench to like drive the team and like create a sense of urgency
[00:28:50] and you just kind of see it every other game just kind of lackluster fallback
[00:28:54] it's almost like they're only playing for the playoffs like it doesn't matter
[00:28:58] we'll make it and who cares what we get seated who cares what our form is
[00:29:02] like you can't go into this stretch of the season thinking that way
[00:29:07] you're going to get humiliated in the first round by a team that's way less talented than you know
[00:29:14] if you just aren't putting in that energy every game
[00:29:17] I think teams have our number in that they know counterattack
[00:29:22] if you look at we generally a possession team and when we lose it's generally through counterattacks
[00:29:29] they come back and we're not being able to deal with those counterattacks effectively
[00:29:34] and we're not scoring goals we score goals we score a lot of them
[00:29:37] but when it's a decent opponent and has a decent defense we're scoring one or none
[00:29:43] and unfortunately like I've been saying all season
[00:29:46] Nick's done a fantastic job but he's not the one to win in these 1-0 matches or 1-1 matches
[00:29:52] well let's just hope they turn it on for our next two home games because Sacramento and Tampa Bay are
[00:30:00] still beyond big for our team and our sense of pride in who we are
[00:30:06] and kind of like getting the guys to think like hey this will be our year
[00:30:11] because they've been hearing it all year you have the best goal scorer but you can't just have one guy doing
[00:30:16] all the goals for your team and we're just getting in there because he's getting a hat trick in certain games
[00:30:22] maybe one goal here that's the winner like we need everyone to start contributing a little bit more
[00:30:28] yeah the MDs doing a great job and Ryan you should be smiling when I say that because I think both him and Nick's
[00:30:36] combined total is greater than any other two players in the USL
[00:30:43] and I said they were going to hit 30 this year combined and they're well past that
[00:30:49] what does Nick sitting out need one or two more
[00:30:54] he needs one to tie so you said it 24
[00:30:56] that's one to tie the USL
[00:31:00] yep
[00:31:01] and then was he has to get 27 to
[00:31:05] pre-file time at the weeks
[00:31:07] something like that
[00:31:08] that's the battery record but that's also including playoffs
[00:31:12] yeah that's included play if that's what it was
[00:31:14] okay because he's already set the battery record for single season
[00:31:19] well hopefully he turns it on Saturday night
[00:31:22] hopefully we see a fantastic story barrage led by the left foot of Nick maybe his forehead
[00:31:29] his right foot whatever he needs to do to get those bicycle some scissors maybe a scorpion
[00:31:36] let's throw in a scorpion
[00:31:37] did they have scorpions in Spain maybe that's how he shows off there
[00:31:41] he says you know shows you can do that
[00:31:42] and speaking of Nick's I know this will probably come out tomorrow or the day after
[00:31:48] but he's doing an interview on CVS sports glazzo today at like just 545 540
[00:31:58] so I'm sure there'll be some replays of that where you can catch it maybe hear from him a little bit about his move
[00:32:03] and maybe a little more about the playoffs coming up in his current run of form which is incredible
[00:32:08] so check that out and hopefully he gets us that record tying goal against Sacramento on Saturday
[00:32:19] maybe I don't know this is pie in the sky maybe just some investors start looking at a real stadium
[00:32:25] up until you know I started seeing all these other stadiums that are just phenomenal based off of where USL championship level
[00:32:33] and going man are the batteries deserving of that level of you know stadium
[00:32:40] and maybe some somebody will build it and we will come
[00:32:45] me you put this team in any other city they have it but Charles the real estate if you can put an apartment complex there
[00:32:53] that's what's going there
[00:32:56] let's talk about Saturday night kickoff 730 against the Sacramento Republic
[00:33:04] hopefully our battery can beat up on those bears I don't know if they have a bear in their little California several
[00:33:13] it's only our third time ever playing them
[00:33:16] and what's our record against them
[00:33:19] so the first time we played against them we lost 4 to 0 and then when we faced them last year in Sacramento we tied 1 to 1 to open the season
[00:33:28] so predictions it's time for predictions
[00:33:33] Ryan
[00:33:36] ooh come to me second
[00:33:38] Patrick I don't know if you can see this but he's consulting his ESPN gambling app or something
[00:33:45] I said oh how did you know
[00:33:49] it's not good the odds makers are never always right
[00:33:54] I was half right I was half right this last match
[00:33:59] I was more than half right
[00:34:03] I said 2-0
[00:34:03] yeah because I got I got Taurus scoring both goals and we only scored once so that's like twice
[00:34:12] I'll give you mine Granite because this will probably be the only one I do this year but I think we're not going to win this
[00:34:21] I think it's gonna be a loss you don't have our captain defender
[00:34:25] who knows if coach Pyramid is just gonna put Robbie Crawford his center back for this one so
[00:34:32] I think it's just gonna be a 1-0 loss unfortunately
[00:34:36] I think Grinney's gonna keep us in it for as long as he can
[00:34:40] can we pick up a loner
[00:34:42] should be able to we got a goalie for it right
[00:34:46] that was during the transfer Sabre should be back correct
[00:34:51] yes yep and so that that tightens up the back line a lot just by him his presence on the field
[00:34:58] Ryan what do your gambling god say
[00:35:01] well currently they're having the it's actually a very even line can go 50-50
[00:35:09] but I'm actually gonna go and say that battery win 2-0
[00:35:16] Sacramento gets jet lag coming over here
[00:35:20] who's scoring
[00:35:22] I have more canik snag in one
[00:35:27] and I have MD score in the other
[00:35:30] but I also do favor an MD brace this game
[00:35:34] you got it's a prediction you can't predict like 15
[00:35:38] I'll go with an MD brace because I feel like my man is about to turn it on Samuel Beak in the back
[00:35:44] is gonna help Grinney get these shut out and MD Myers is gonna get the brace
[00:35:49] and he's gonna come off the field and say Ryan I'll give you my jersey when we play against
[00:35:54] Lamb County that's who's gonna save me
[00:35:57] okay I'll meet your 2-0 battery and
[00:36:03] I just have a feeling that MD is gonna get one of those two
[00:36:06] and the usual suspect
[00:36:10] Juan DeVito Reyes is gonna get the other one
[00:36:12] I like that one off a set piece or open play
[00:36:15] I think he's due for an open play
[00:36:17] haha I like it
[00:36:19] he's been he's so remember the first year he was
[00:36:22] he had the range on these shots way outside the box
[00:36:26] but they were just going all over the place
[00:36:28] now he's got where he's getting them on target
[00:36:31] he just needs to get that
[00:36:34] that velocity and then in the knuckledness of a ball
[00:36:37] like he did it on the free kick of the night
[00:36:39] soon as he gets those that lockdown
[00:36:41] his team is gonna fear him even more
[00:36:45] Ryan I don't know how jet lag they'll be
[00:36:47] this will be two weeks rest for Sacramento
[00:36:51] so they might be well charged and well game plan
[00:36:54] for the battery
[00:36:57] yeah and a lot of preparation
[00:36:59] as it does to players if they don't maintain their physique
[00:37:03] day in and day out and they just go home
[00:37:05] and you know do the things that they want to do and not stay disciplined
[00:37:08] that's what I'm kind of hoping on right now because even the pros lack at times
[00:37:12] I mean they're also in sitting in second currently so
[00:37:17] I think they might want to fight for first place in the west
[00:37:20] maybe get that so that little advantage
[00:37:24] since they're working on their behind us with four hours
[00:37:29] three hours three hours
[00:37:31] so puts them three hours behind us so arching off seven
[00:37:36] three yard time so in their biological time it is
[00:37:40] four o'clock four o'clock
[00:37:45] so what a which hotel they staying at do you know
[00:37:49] I'm not saying we should go visit right like that you know give them up
[00:37:52] get them up later something like that but did we give them the South Carolina tour
[00:37:56] and you know say welcome to the Carolinas by shooting off some fireworks outside their hotel
[00:38:01] I think she off fireworks is illegal except for certain times of year
[00:38:07] on South Carolina
