Charleston Battery game week 3 match-up against New Mexico United. Join Granit, Ryan, Patrick, and Matt as they discuss the exciting home opener. Up the Battery!
[00:00:00] Welcome to Cannon Crue, a weekly podcast discussing the Charleston battery. Your host Granite will be joined by other defenders of the fleet from the Black and Yellow supporters section, and together they will help fortify and conquer their other Cannon Crue.
[00:00:36] Welcome to Cannon Crue, I am Granite and I am joined by Ryan. Hey, how you guys doing? Patrick, what's going on? And Matt, hello everyone. Matt sounds all formal because he's chiming in from London.
[00:00:52] Hey welcome all, so we're here to talk about the battery and the four nil broadside beating that we successfully laid upon the New Mexico United team. But before we go on our victory
[00:01:02] parade, I want to say I like the owner of New Mexico. So he and Rob come out, Peter and Rob come out to visit with Regimental Troops and with Bar Charleston and he brought some beer with
[00:01:17] them so all of a sudden he is a he's geared himself to my heart. I've met him before at another match, had a good discussion with him. He seems like a great guy, loves football
[00:01:28] and loves being an owner and gets along well with Robert Pierce. Is that something normal for most owners to travel? I have not seen an owner, I have not witnessed an owner like that be so
[00:01:39] involved. I think Rob and him have some kind of you know they know each other and prior to this or they get along really well. So it's kind of a surprise I was standing next to the guy and
[00:01:50] was eventually introduced to him while we're watching the match. I thought that was pretty interesting that he'd come all the way from New Mexico to watch his team play and now stood up through with us people in this order section.
[00:02:01] I was just going to say I think it's uh that must show that he's probably really nice to all the home fans because he's going to spend all that time flying out here for for us and giving
[00:02:13] gifts to us. We might have to fly out to New Mexico now. I will say he did bring one cooler of beer so I was lucky enough to snag one but if I were owner I think it may bring
[00:02:27] maybe a couple extra coolers. Maybe schmooze up the people a little bit more. There it is Brad, it's got it right there. Is that their local local one they use? If you look on if you watch
[00:02:41] their Facebook feed uh that's what they do the watch parties is from what that beer from I'm not going to mention it because Edmond Zos rocks and while he was before he got out there
[00:02:51] with his brand of beer I don't know if it's his brand of beer Edmond Zos already donated a uh I think five cases bound by time stuff like that to pass out amongst the regimental troops
[00:03:03] so we beat him to it but it was very nice gesture of him to pass out some some free beer and then have his team beat for now that's always a good thing so this is our first home game
[00:03:16] at 2024 to regular season a couple of big things that happen is some changes to the field. Yeah so the tunnel to the field looks absolutely amazing and they added new banners going around
[00:03:30] the stands on the north end the really cool graphics very modern it's a really cool way they upgraded the stadium and the players coming on to the field it was really cool
[00:03:43] instead of you know how it was prior when they would have to you know block off the road and everything now you know it's a little bit more civil and it's a little less chaotic brings a
[00:03:53] lot more atmosphere to the fans fans surely enjoyed it and got more into it. Yeah for sure I mean just being there hearing the drums pounding again you know being out in the blue lot
[00:04:08] celebrating with everyone getting ready to go in the vibes were high everyone's just like getting amped up it's our first home game you could definitely feel the players in pretty warm up
[00:04:18] just buying in and super excited to play in front of us. There was a parade around the stadium I'll say real quick and I feel like it got everyone who maybe it was their first time there
[00:04:31] got them really into the action and excited to kind of watch the battery play and like maybe pay a little more attention to the game going forward so that was nice to see. Yeah it's really it's
[00:04:42] always impressive to hear them coming through the bottom of the stands and then come out out by where people start coming in and all of a sudden you see this see and smell the smoke
[00:04:51] and everything else and those drums just beating away just marching on through down to their end of the stadium it's actually a pretty neat tradition they started there. One of the other interesting things is right before kickoff there were some banners that were unveiled and I had
[00:05:07] honor of being one of the unveilers and it was our banner for recognizing that we were Eastern Conference champions last season. I just think it's big to get a trophy in the new stadium after
[00:05:22] leaving Daniels Island you know struggling to create an atmosphere at you know Patriots points to that first season or two and now it's starting to really feel like home to the battery. It really is it's kind of interesting that we start looking at numbers coming in there
[00:05:37] and I think we're starting to track more and more people that were probably sitting in the sidelines and seeing what would happen before they showed up but the attendance was pretty good and I can't remember Ryan you were talking about the number beforehand.
[00:05:52] Yeah there was uh 2,958 people in attendance I think last year you know we tried to give a rough average of how many people attended our home games we'd say between 16 to 1800
[00:06:07] give or take a few people you know so to have doubled that amount for our first home game I think it's you know something really positive to look forward to. The place was packed out the last
[00:06:21] game last season it was around 5000 it was about 5000 but you could see though with the new additions especially to that north end it felt like there wasn't 3000 people there though and like there basically was there was 3000 people there and it didn't feel like that and that was
[00:06:39] what really excited me after I after the match and I saw that number because I know we can if we get back to the final we hope to match like that again and we packed that stadium you know
[00:06:51] we're gonna say about 7000 plus in that stadium. So yeah let's talk quickly about what they did with the supporter section on north end right I thought they just added some standing rows
[00:07:03] but they actually widened it I kept going up the wrong stairway and ended up in the wrong place but they actually widened out on both sides of it so there is a lot of standing row last year
[00:07:13] several of the matches especially towards the end of the year we were packed in there like sardines which is always a lot of fun but now they've added more to it so hopefully a lot more
[00:07:21] people come out and realize how much fun it is to be behind a goal especially when shots are being fired and they're going to top bins and we'll talk about those top bins later right so let's move on to our opponent New Mexico
[00:07:35] and let's talk about the lineup you know of course started back there with Grinwes on the back line was DeSantis Smith Palma and Segbers and then right in front of them were
[00:07:46] Maloy y Casa and then I believe we had Gutierrez Rodriguez and Marcanik and then on the top Myers Ryan go ahead talk about Myers yes I loved it absolutely loved Myers in this game getting the
[00:08:06] call up I thought it was absolutely perfect going to this match I was I was just so happy you saw this smile on my face the moment they announced the lineup I saw a cold cross my phone I saw
[00:08:18] he was playing up top as the sole striker I was so happy I thought that was the perfect move and I think New Mexico was a great opponent to see what he can do and to see how he's going to be our
[00:08:32] big man up top not just be our striker or so our big man up top because he has two happy presence with them he has to have Sear and and the defense of our opposition and he did that
[00:08:49] I mean this is what we talked about in the last pot I mean the chances were there we're just wondering who's going to be that guy to kind of be the central player to receive the
[00:09:00] ball or at least play off the ball and I think he called it we had that central figure who made his presence known to allow our playmakers to run a little more free with the ball but create
[00:09:12] a little more chances that seemed a lot more solid and that we had some real opportunities from by just having that massive presence in the center yeah and I just want to say one more
[00:09:26] thanks I know we'll talk about him again but the fact of his selflessness while he was playing with the ball always giving it up to the best option never being selfish with the ball
[00:09:40] I thought was absolutely just so beautiful the watches of fan and is what you want but it's so hard to expect that for someone coming to a new club new city you know new atmosphere
[00:09:52] everything and he just played with such passion and love for the sport that it makes me want more I'm just so happy and can't wait to see him play more he was working the whole game every
[00:10:05] second he was out there he was running and he was running with passion he was 100 the whole time he was out there I was very impressed by his work rate now I don't
[00:10:18] want to talk about all the subs but quickly we had our usual suspects on her but we had three additional ones and there were three academy players three young men that were they can play
[00:10:32] at home games and it was braden cob matthew dean and charlie denis and braden and charlie are both charleston natives here and go to ocean side collegiate and matthew is from georgia yeah I
[00:10:47] think it's what we kind of talked about the start of the season is maybe when we were questioning the 19 man group is this what we were leaving room for were we leaving room
[00:10:58] to expand through youth and experience and just trying to gain these players some momentum in the season so they could come on and help us in the cup or just confuse the opposition in future games
[00:11:12] not knowing really much about them it's cool to see obviously hometown kids you want to see that you want to see it through your hometown club but I think it's really cool to add three more
[00:11:23] midfielders to this already star-studded lineup yeah I think especially for me growing up I did also attend ocean side so you know I'd love to see some of my former school's players getting in
[00:11:38] and you know I think that definitely speaks to the high school systems in the troll scenario and I think there's just such an abundance of talent that's right in home for us and I think
[00:11:50] the battery needs to continue to look at that and I just want to say props to the recruitment not just on the youth level but across the whole front even you're going back to coaching staff I mean
[00:12:02] it's really just been spot on for the past couple years now Charlie was he was the can we sign last year and so he continues on with this year now just switching over to the
[00:12:15] couple players we didn't see on the lineup drackin and leelit yeah we didn't see archer on the lineup at all but fortunate for us tailgating over in the yellow lot for everyone you did get to see him doing some pretty intense drills over on the practice field
[00:12:35] not something you would see from someone coaxing an injury or kind of wean his way back he was out there full-fledged going hard coaches pushing him and honestly we were there for two or
[00:12:48] three decent beers so give that 20 30 minutes over there and he was pushing I'm excited to see him I think he's gonna be ready for the next game yeah and the other on the other person that we
[00:13:01] were missing was our left back dross drack and he missing him he took that late knock against oakland back injury but couldn't really tell if it was something if it was his lower back or if it
[00:13:17] was something with the legs not entirely too concerned now that we see the depth that we have you know we were missing both archer and drack and we did not miss a beat in that backline
[00:13:33] we had our filler was Nathan DeSantos and that guy balled out in the left back position for us brad I want to let you talk about him because I know you're really excited watching him out
[00:13:48] there playing on the left side oh I was because he wasn't supposed to be a starter at the beginning of the season it didn't seem like he came in got a couple minutes the first couple
[00:13:56] match our first match a little bit in the second match but he was out there and just going and working hard and there's a couple other things we'll talk about later what he brought to the team
[00:14:07] especially regarding the first goal because his thanks to be called about Maloy but his soccer IQ his eyes were watching and he saw a weakness and New Mexico and him and two other players helped exploit that so let's talk about New Mexico and let's talk about kickoff
[00:14:25] yeah I think New Mexico I think the one big thing for me was there's a pretty similar formation from them to what the batter is playing there was more you know a little bit of a 4-2-3-1
[00:14:37] there and I definitely think my biggest takeaway from New Mexico was they just really kept trying to break up play throughout the entire match yeah so it really felt like New Mexico's game plan was to
[00:14:53] try and just describing what you were talking about Matt really trying to break down our game plan but you saw a lot of cheat you files a lot of niggly files just kind of hitting the legs
[00:15:05] taking someone out not unnecessarily rough but kind of just trying to stop our flow of the game and the pressure we were putting on them so it definitely seemed like their ultimate game plan
[00:15:17] was hey as long as we slow charleson down we can probably limit the amount of chances they get on us any player that has the ball a lot gets fouled a lot Maloy was just getting hacked time and time
[00:15:30] and time again throughout the whole match it was kind of interesting this time we didn't get as full as many yellow cards as they did we did have one he kaza did some craziness did he not with some
[00:15:41] fouls one he took he took the guy out the first half with a kind of trailing leg and up into them for no reason I don't understand it he's a much smarter player than that it was all the way
[00:15:53] down in the other end and he just took him out then later on he does another crazy foul on a player any other thoughts on that I think you're lucky not to have anything else
[00:16:08] looked at I mean maybe I know it's the usl championship but if var was involved maybe he's looking at something a little harsher on that first tackle because any other contact on the guy
[00:16:19] and I mean he's going up at him it's really just a dumb challenge and you saw it right after the guy came back and retaliated and almost kind of killed that nonsense between the two of them
[00:16:31] it was over with they both got their cards they moved on I think we were fortunate in that challenge that he didn't really come away with anything else yeah and having that challenge the way it was
[00:16:44] it really hurt he causes gameplay a little bit because he couldn't hold that presence like he did in the midfield because man got both 20 minutes into the game on a yellow card so he has another
[00:16:58] 70 minutes of the game that's completely changed because one bad tackle and he's out of the game and we're now manned down um so it it should change the way he played and it did change the
[00:17:08] way he played and affected that midfield but luckily for us we were still able to maintain the possession and the flow with the midfield I'm gonna differ with you a little bit
[00:17:19] when you see it he causes second foul you can see the stud marks on the inside of the guy's yellow socks he was pointing to them the referee looking down that one was if it wasn't a second yellow
[00:17:31] it might have been a straight up red because he came in studs up on inside of his calf after watching it again I was like whoa we got by with that one big time so let's talk about the game
[00:17:41] itself let's talk about how we started out I think the first thing to start out with is the work rate of Myers we talked about a little bit earlier but he was just pressing the other
[00:17:52] players were pressing too but he was just going at it yeah I mean eyes in the back of his head right I mean you see things and it didn't take long for him to get going immediately making an
[00:18:05] impact you can see defenders drawing to him and I think we'll just hop into it right 17 minutes set piece dos Santos your boy makes a quick throw Myers eyes on the side and the back of
[00:18:18] his head just makes the flick over right up to Mark Anich and I mean it was a one two three let's not take a lot of time but that was really heads up play so they've been trying to work out of the
[00:18:29] back and they weren't being very successful and they got over to the right back because Gutierrez that really laid some pressure on that right back and so he tried to dump the ball out and
[00:18:39] they went out of bounds and the Santos picks up the ball and just all said notices what the weakness is on their side Myers is split between two defenders and to his right was Mark Anich and it was a
[00:18:53] beautiful throw New Mexico was definitely watching at that point they were still arguing about what they just did and it was a wonderful header yeah I mean I haven't I didn't see from
[00:19:05] my perspective last year when I was watching the battery play to this year hadn't seen a player really win the header challenges challenges in the air aerial attacks for the battery like I did
[00:19:18] last night with Myers the way he went up and got it perfectly put it down for Mark and Mark Anich was able to go in and score but that's also the selflessness I was talking
[00:19:29] about earlier in the cast and the awareness to see Mark Anich as they are headed to him instead of just trying to head it down to himself or chest it and try to do a side volley or something
[00:19:42] towards that front post he simply did the smart thing and put his teammate right in and drew both defenders to him yeah it was a great finish nice and calm and put it in the
[00:19:55] corner there and the keeper didn't have a chance now keeper didn't have a chance to save that one and that was another thing I had mentioned last last episode was sliding Mark Anich
[00:20:08] back out to the outside and that is a I just think it's a great fit for him he was paired with Fidel last year on the outside and this year he will have Gutierrez was on the other side I
[00:20:21] think both of them play quite well together on the outsides and especially with Myers now getting him that goal first goal at home I think they're going to have a good chemistry build right
[00:20:31] there so that's two goals for for Nick this season out of three matches I think it's pretty good I know we can do better I know he's got it in him the other good thing was
[00:20:41] this spreading out of goals across multiple players and just not getting goals from this same person so let's move on to the second half there was a shot on goal Greenwiss got it and then there I think there's another shot he did a nice little
[00:20:56] kick save attempt and it went around him Maloy just being everywhere clears it off the line seems like Greenwiss does quite a few kick saves is there is that a certain technique or something like that Ryan? It is a technique you know you know there's a world-class keeper
[00:21:14] out there named Gigi Buffon that is quite known for his kick saves but a kick save is generally gone to a keeper as a last resort as a last-ditch effort to just let me throw my body out there
[00:21:28] because I can't get my body to the ground quick enough but a lot of keepers have mastered it with with Greenwiss seeing him how he played yesterday I kind of thought he played a little on
[00:21:42] his line and when I mean on his line like he played up and he was a little further but when I mean on his line is by the fact that he played a little shallow and scared and he everything
[00:21:53] was very last second and almost like a last-ditch effort it wasn't very clean and he didn't have his mind made up of what he wanted and so we had a close mess up right there but Maloy was there
[00:22:07] to back him up and I again our teammates being there for each other in those hard moments is is really building our team chemistry we're really buying into what the battery are trying
[00:22:21] to do here in this city yeah I feel like Maloy really had his back and that which we talked about last week with the one mistake of if Archer's in that does he come for that ball and maybe make
[00:22:36] his presence a little more known I feel like the boys are starting to get his back a little more I mean kudos to Maloy the whole first half he was working his ass off and just recovering a loose
[00:22:49] ball that maybe even made a pass and they tried to make a pass off of it and he went and cut it to win it back slow the game back down and bring it to our tempo so where we can restart again
[00:22:59] so I mean I feel like he really was just the workhorse for this entire first 55 60 minutes until we got back into that group because 17 minutes the goal comes but from that point on it was
[00:23:14] really looking like it could have been tied up in the whole sway of the match could have went to either side and sure sure could have and Maloy was just awesome on the ball all night he's apparently
[00:23:26] been doing this his whole life but last night he was really just circling around him all they could do to stop him was found there were sometimes he was three on one and he was
[00:23:35] dribbling out of him two on one dribbling out of him and one on one the guy that guys didn't have a chance so after that save Amanda Santos does a nice little pass to Rodriguez and what does Rodriguez do
[00:23:54] he scores a goal it is a fantastic goal yeah I mean it all started with realistically a driving force by us and then turning into numesco winning the ball back and it looked like a
[00:24:07] promising counter attack and then from that counter attack we just turn when the ball and Rodriguez without hesitation does what Rodriguez will do and he put it just strikers poachers goal
[00:24:19] whatever you want to call it you can call it a world-class goal because it went right up into that top end oh it's definitely made the highlight tape for the year palma has come in and stepped
[00:24:36] up for archer and almost had a hit kind of a rough start the first half hit two giveaways he's trying to force the ball through but we're doing a great job build up by the back yeah I mean I I think
[00:24:52] it needs to be mentioned that not only palma but as well smith they both really struggled with their distribution especially on such a dominant performance from the rest of the team
[00:25:04] yeah so I was just gonna say with palma and smith they both um for me looked a little poor with you know palma had 44 accurate long balls smith had 29 accurate long balls and I just think
[00:25:22] for such a dominant display for the rest of the team to have both your center backs playing the full 90 and struggling you know just on the possession end of it uh it's just a little
[00:25:35] worry for maybe those tougher games later down in season yeah math that's a great point I think from just watching it back I didn't even notice that because I'm so focused on how well dos Santos
[00:25:48] was playing from games one and two that I never really noticed how poor the center back distribution was and that he was kind of just covering their asses and bringing more of the
[00:25:59] pressure onto him in that wing play yeah well I think it wasn't just to Santos who had to step up I think the whole midfield then had to step up but you know I did definitely think one of our
[00:26:14] midfielders stepped up certainly more and I think you you know you skipped down to the 56 minute there's honestly one of the best free kicks I've seen in a long time yeah
[00:26:27] yeah I think uh Matt you and I were sitting behind this thing and we were just watching from I mean we've seen it this season so far free kicks just kind of hit the wall and dribble out to
[00:26:40] corners and we were treated too or worldly but we see this guy but 19 yards kick it up get it over the wall and not into the top end but even harder about mid-level for the keeper to try
[00:26:57] and save what you don't really expect as the keeper yeah with the with the free kick you know we talked about it in the 20th minute or the 19th minute in the game our midfielder gets a yellow
[00:27:10] card we need a we need a big midfield presence who are we going to count on well loy steps up in a big way for us and goes to take this free kick now when he delivered the free kick
[00:27:22] if the ball was in a very tough spot it was in the center of the goal but just a tad bit to the left and it was only 19 20 yards out he was still on the arch of the top of the 18 so there's a very
[00:27:36] tough angle to get it up and down I want to I'm going to ask you guys again what your thoughts were as you guys were behind the goal we could really see the angle of the ball but
[00:27:45] as again looking back at the keeper I didn't think he really hesitant or even questioned about the ball like he kind of already made his mind up like if it was on target he was going
[00:27:59] to give up on it for a save because he knew exactly where it was going to go everyone knew that Malouis is going to go to the keeper's right and when the keeper goes to die for it
[00:28:11] he gave up on it because the keeper didn't even hit the deck he didn't hit the ground at all so that was that wasn't do you think with it being that close it's 19 yards that's not like
[00:28:24] the sweet zone to put a ball up over a wall have it drop back in that it's not a normal flight of a ball from from there you think maybe the keeper said hey that's not he's not even
[00:28:34] challenged that area because he can't get it up over the wall and back down and to a surprise it went over the wall and come back down I don't I'm just gonna say this to any average soccer fan
[00:28:46] they gotta watch a soccer game to experience that because anything is possible you know we've seen we've seen matches where a team has had 10 possession two shots on goal compared to a team who's had 30 shots on goal or 30 shots with 20 on target and 90
[00:29:04] on possession and still lose two to one and it would be like these magic moments and yeah yeah I'm just watching I'm just watching it back right now and the wall did jump so it even more impressive than what I remember because while jumping at that close distance
[00:29:26] and still getting it over them and back down very impressive now that's actually a good take because I didn't notice that the wall jumped and maybe the wall jumping froze the keeper up because
[00:29:39] you're that's a longer time for the keeper to recognize where the ball is or to see the ball because when the players jump you lose where the ball is whereas if they stay down you the
[00:29:48] keeper has a good chance of seeing the ball the entire time because when we set up our walls we set it up in between the players legs so we could still see the ball even while we're
[00:29:58] setting up in our position that's just how keepers can always keep an eye on the ball that's what we're trained to do and that jumping of the wall you kind of lose it by the time it
[00:30:08] gets up to their waist side right when it goes up to like the shorts area lose it the whole time so I could see I could see that happening now so that was our third goal by third different
[00:30:20] player in the match in it third one of the season all set so let's move on to the there's a couple subs that come on Torres Conway at some point
[00:30:32] and boy did they have an effect on the play it was at the 90th minute but it was still a fantastic shot by Torres coming off the post and then right into the line of Conway who put himself
[00:30:46] in a great position and just calmly put it in the bottom corner and we haven't seen Conway play a lot so it was kind of nice for him to come out and finish that one so easily
[00:31:01] yeah Conway is another player that is starting to break into the scene as well it's good to see him get those minutes get that goal of course at the 91st minute but this kind of goes in with
[00:31:14] Myers making that massive impact you would want to think how is this going to now affect Conway's future bowl with the club and him coming in and scoring and making it known that he you
[00:31:28] know he can get the job done in different ways is very positive and the fact that again we are able to show how much depth this team has with only having 19 players on a roster is amazing
[00:31:44] I love it the quality of our players are adding new it's a new high and one of my bold predictions for the season I'm going to go ahead and say it is that I honestly believe that we we could be
[00:31:57] hosting the final again near and jar will send that thing in the season yet I think just a touch on that goal I think the confidence for Torres as well to start building a little more
[00:32:10] you got the ball past keeper unfortunately it hits the post but just knowing your teammates may clean that up for you and just get you a little more confidence by saying hey man keep
[00:32:21] shooting the ball because if you're not going to hit it in we'll get it for you and knock that one in it even looked like Conway was lining up for the right footed shot on that and it kind of
[00:32:32] caught him a little off guard which seems even more impressive that he somehow switched his body last second to go ahead and hit it in with his left so talking about shooting stats Matt you
[00:32:45] like to look at numbers that's kind of your thing yeah I when I pulled up the stat sheet for this game I was honestly getting a little bit shades of a Pep Guardiola's man city here the amount of shots
[00:33:00] that the battery are taking but also getting on target it is quite impressive 18 total shots with 10 on target from five big chances created that's that's elite numbers especially for the USL yeah so that pretty much finished out the game there's a lot of fun being there
[00:33:20] up in the new expanded standing section at one point we moved down to the board charleson area if you're new to peter's point don't be afraid go down into the bar charleson area
[00:33:33] and enjoy the festivities they've got going on there it is loud it is fun they're warm and welcoming they'll have you beaten on drum doing something so there's a lot of fun down there so kind of
[00:33:52] look at some of the numbers at the end of this match where we're at in the eastern conference number two for goals number one for shots clean sheets tied with number one goals conceded number 10 out of 12 passes 1500 and four accuracy 82 percent both of them were number one in
[00:34:14] an eastern conference and if you start looking at individuals nicks got tied for number one goals with two of them tied with number one for shots i'm sorry he's not tied he has number one
[00:34:27] for shots with eight mires with seven and just goes on and on and then will always just top on everything so it's i don't think we're playing any different and we had the first two matches
[00:34:40] we just finally had better results at the end yeah i think we touched on the past two weeks and we get to just keep talking about how strong our attack is and that the chances will flow the more
[00:34:54] these guys get to play together the more we'll see that ball go in the back of the net and this is a great example of it yeah it's a home game so maybe they're a little more pumped up amped up to go
[00:35:04] but this is a huge confidence boost for the battery especially going on a two-game road streak next so it's nice to see them clicking a little more and just having the confidence to
[00:35:15] strike the ball yeah so if you're the battery right now right going into this season after the season we had last year how do you build upon that we had a 59 point turnaround from the previous
[00:35:32] year how do we improve and get better and get more points than last year right i don't i would it be surprised if coach pierman has literally printed out the schedule from last year and circled
[00:35:49] a fat circle over every single game that we lost or tied every game that we dropped points in because like for new mexico for example like new mexico last year we beat them one to zero it was
[00:36:01] the first time we actually beat new mexico and our history of playing them so that should be another easy win we took care of that even better than what we did last year when we
[00:36:11] played oakland we lost to oakland last year so this year we were able to get a point from them which was amazing and north carolina was just a new team coming in as first game of the season on
[00:36:20] the road i'll take a point gladly miami is a frustrating team coming in to this game who's our next opponent and we're going to talk more about that but they're a team that we lost to
[00:36:34] last year and we also tied so we only got one point away from playing them twice last year would do not play new mexico again this year because they're a western conference team but
[00:36:45] miami you're right we played them twice this year but before we get into miami looking to next weekend i want to hear some thoughts on man of the match yeah i mean we had the official
[00:36:58] announcement which is going to differ from my pick but dr. mires was the official man of the match which if you haven't seen it check out the batteries instagram page maybe the most
[00:37:10] old-time picture for a man of the match him just with that heineken light sitting there amazing but for me i'm going to go with meloie i mean the workhorse man he did it back to front
[00:37:24] goals defending goals just winning the ball back that's my guy so for this game mires getting man of the match something that we called going into this game we called it um from the last
[00:37:36] last podcast mires coming into this game i was expecting very high things i didn't expect anything less than what he went out and produced out there he way exceeded my expectations and i
[00:37:49] rightfully thought he deserved a man of the match but again it is very hard to pick who should have gotten man of the match in that game because it could have gone to so many
[00:38:00] different people for me my man of the match would i have to agree here with the shout from meloie i think he put in a season defining performance and i think that's something that can just carry him
[00:38:14] for the rest of the year well i'm going to disagree with all of you meloie's just doing what meloie does if we went off what he does like he did this saturday he will always be man of the
[00:38:26] match every match of the season my pick is a boy dos Santos he was killing it left side he was getting balls under he was he was the pre-assist for the first goal that vision seen what's about
[00:38:40] right to happen and just all the play he did afterwards until it was just an impressive coming on because your starter is injured and you're coming out there doing the hard work and getting results so let's talk about miami looking forward we're going down there on saturday
[00:39:00] 30 march kickoff set seven does anybody have any intel on miami yeah miami is coming into the season with a new head coach which he has a little bit of an interesting history his
[00:39:16] name is antonio i hope i don't butcher this no sereno he is a former uventus a c melan west ham palermo and orlando city player he was part of the second ever siri at team of the year
[00:39:31] in 2010 21 2011 he played with kaka in melan and in orlando so a little bit of the decorated career here but this is his first ever season coaching that's an interesting it's interesting
[00:39:46] right there with miami having a new coach i'd wonder to see is you know how miami retained the majority of their players from last season and if they're going to be playing as a new team in a system
[00:39:59] or if they're going to be playing as a team with that chip on the shoulder who read it are gradually missed out on the playoffs to detroit based off of head to head because it in the usl
[00:40:11] it doesn't go based off gold differential as a tiebreaker it goes based off head to head first miami is one one in one and any players we should be looking for
[00:40:25] yeah so i'd say one player to keep an eye out for is ellen gavel anas probably messed that up pretty bad but uh he's a young american kid 24 easy to see him on the field he's number 99
[00:40:42] he brings a lot of pace a lot of energy uh he had two goals in the last game it seems like he's starting to come into a little bit of form out of six shots he's had this season four
[00:40:54] have been on target so he's always hitting him at the goal and i mean this season he's almost played every single minute of all three games he's been subbed off twice but really for
[00:41:06] like 10 minutes in each game so he's got the play style to really threaten to attack the battery especially in a defense that's just trying to come together without their leader but this is also his first time in the usl championship i mean he just moved up this
[00:41:25] season to miami from greenville triumph so he really shined last year had a total of 18 assists which is dangerous in most crosses in the championship with about 41 so i know the last game he was
[00:41:40] scoring them but i think he would be more of a threat to us just crossing that ball into his teammates and really creating the dangerous ball yeah i think with uh staying on that same note
[00:41:52] with chance creation they're right back nicholas cardona he is one of their biggest defensive presences which will definitely ramp the watch our wing situation going down left hand flank for us but he also has created two chances from this season so it you know miami definitely doesn't
[00:42:13] just have one attacking outlet in terms of uh creativity so i definitely think we're gonna see a really big defensive form of defensive performance needed from paulman smith which i'm not really
[00:42:27] filled with too much confidence as we had talked about earlier based off blast kit yeah another guy to watch as well um while we go down and play against miami is a guy we didn't mention andrew
[00:42:41] booth you know that's a familiar name to the battery fans over here is he was a battery last year um he did play for us in the final and now he's down there miami i wonder if that's going to be any
[00:42:55] sort of uh if he's gonna have a chip if there's gonna be any sort of styles or anything like that um you know that's it's gonna be kind of interesting to see that yeah i was just gonna say i wonder
[00:43:07] if we're really gonna see uh alan and maloy paired back up to try and counter this with just a few more defensive players who can really recover the ball back and just distribute it
[00:43:20] without knowing that he causes going to be going in for a tackle a harshly on a team like this yeah i think piggybacking off of that uh miami's game plan is counterattack sit off the ball and give away a lot of styles they're currently on seven yellow cards
[00:43:40] the three matches with three different players and biek bata and genzano all having two so i think we're gonna see yet another dirty game which again going back to that 19 man squad hopefully no injuries are sustained yeah so when when we go down to miami
[00:44:02] we have to realize too like big picture if you look at all of our recent times we've played miami the last five times alone we have only time we've only come away with one point
[00:44:14] out of five times playing them we've only come away with one point meaning one point means that we've only tied them we've lost four other times to miami this is going to be a game that
[00:44:26] i feel like again ben pierman has surfed on his calendar this is i feel like he's a crucial win in the east right now and i feel like a match prediction could be a two to one we get the victory
[00:44:40] and the 80 plus minute it's going to be a hard fall it's going to be gruesome and there's going to be a lot of fouls ryan just give us a prediction because you gave gave one a great one last time
[00:44:53] but uh just see we need to check our other co-host to see if they have any predictions yeah ryan i'm actually a little curious do you think this is md's chance to kind of break in and stay
[00:45:07] in the team i'm predicting a one-no win for us but do you think this is him solidifying his play from this last game to go ahead and start this next one i i do believe so i don't see why you
[00:45:24] wouldn't start him again just the way he draws so many defenders and his movement and everything i definitely give him the nod again to start and especially if you're wanting to
[00:45:36] in if you're wanting to play ben pierman style which is the way he's come out every game and played is that soul striker i feel like he's the guy who's fit that role the best for us
[00:45:49] okay y'all i think it about wraps it up we're running to almost an hour long right now which is uh it's kind of fun when you're just talking amongst friends of how long how time can fly
[00:45:59] we'll be down at edmunds host saturday night seven o'clock kickoff follow us on socials www.cannoncrew.com and please send us questions that's all but you
