[00:00:00] Welcome to Cannon Crue, a weekly podcast discussing the Charleston battery.

[00:00:22] Your host Granit will be joined by other defenders of the fleet from the Black and Yellow supporters

[00:00:26] section and together they will help fortify and conquer their other cannon crew.

[00:00:37] Welcome to the Cannon Crue Podcast, this is Granit and I'm joined by Patrick.

[00:00:41] How you doing Patrick?

[00:00:42] What's up, Brandon?

[00:00:44] Ryan.

[00:00:46] They're doing good.

[00:00:47] How are you?

[00:00:48] Good.

[00:00:49] So, we're here to talk about the battery and their recent escapade up to Indy and

[00:00:56] up to the brickyard in our 4-2, I think, beat down?

[00:01:00] Is that right?

[00:01:01] Or made them Black and Yellow?

[00:01:03] We made the boys in blue, Black and Yellow.

[00:01:05] That's what we did.

[00:01:07] Let's talk about first off the lineup changes.

[00:01:11] We didn't see much.

[00:01:12] Only player we saw come off was Torres and Gutierrez back on for this game but Terry

[00:01:17] Kee for the rest of the squad so really that was it.

[00:01:20] Not much of a change.

[00:01:21] Coach Piriman is doing a little tweaking here and there.

[00:01:23] We'll talk about some significant change.

[00:01:25] We think it's kind of interesting later on.

[00:01:28] First let's talk about first half and an excellent goal by Emilio Icaza.

[00:01:33] Comes in, little give-and-go and he puts it right just calmly in traffic at the back

[00:01:39] of the net.

[00:01:40] It was a great goal all around from a team effort.

[00:01:42] It comes from a great distribution by Grinny.

[00:01:46] Unfortunate by Nick to hold onto the ball but Icaza comes right through with

[00:01:51] strength, coys, wins the ball, one-two give-and-goes and puts in the back of the net.

[00:01:57] It was beautiful.

[00:01:58] Yeah, first goal of the year too.

[00:02:00] I mean five starts finally gets one in there for as much work as he's been doing on the

[00:02:05] field.

[00:02:06] He also had like a slight chance right in front of goal about a minute before this

[00:02:11] so I think he was just warming up for this one but he did do the legwork to

[00:02:15] get that ball out to Nick to start that whole movement as well which is nice to

[00:02:19] see.

[00:02:20] He worked hard all the matches he's played in.

[00:02:22] Got a couple unlucky yellow cards, the work ethic he's put in is really paid off on

[00:02:28] this goal.

[00:02:29] I mean it was just simply, I mean it was really just a beautiful give-and-go,

[00:02:34] passing it off and then picking back up to continue the run and just so many defenders

[00:02:39] around him but he was very good at clinically putting the back of the net.

[00:02:43] Yeah, slots at home.

[00:02:45] I'm surprised that ball made it to him but I think it was just the perfect ball

[00:02:51] across from Nick to find him sitting there making that effort showing what every

[00:02:56] other player should be doing on the field and you'll be rewarded with a chance.

[00:03:01] I think it goes to the discussion about off-the-ball play, put you in a good

[00:03:06] space and position to receive it and do great things with it and I think

[00:03:11] Kaza showed here that his ability to do that was just working out very well.

[00:03:16] He never stopped his motion once on the play.

[00:03:20] He continued his run and continued to keep himself in a position where he was

[00:03:25] behind his defender and had the space to get into the attack to score the goal.

[00:03:31] It was perfect.

[00:03:33] Yeah, I think that confidence just builds knowing that Nick's in such form too

[00:03:38] that he's going to make something happen so just go for it and you may

[00:03:44] just get something off of this.

[00:03:46] You can really see the level of soccer IQ has risen from last year into this year.

[00:03:52] It's exciting to see.

[00:03:54] So this Nick guy, we'll talk about a little later.

[00:03:57] I think he's all right though, right?

[00:03:59] So he got the assist on this goal because he did and I think he might

[00:04:04] have some spectacular things later that was recognized by the USL.

[00:04:10] But we'll talk about that in a little bit.

[00:04:11] What's Lord Giveth?

[00:04:13] Lord, take it away.

[00:04:15] And there were back-to-back goals against us.

[00:04:17] Patrick is a defender.

[00:04:19] Talked me through it.

[00:04:21] Yeah, I mean the first goal is just...

[00:04:25] I think Smith just was trying to shield him outside and

[00:04:30] notice he wasn't trying to bite on that.

[00:04:32] So the set of shifting his body over and get a little closer,

[00:04:35] close out the space, he almost took a step back and opened it up for

[00:04:40] the indie player to just take a shot, have that goal.

[00:04:43] And it was a well-placed goal but as a defender,

[00:04:46] you can't be giving up this kind of space at the 18 yard line.

[00:04:50] I mean, you're the center back.

[00:04:51] You should be closing that outside the box and blocking it if not making

[00:04:56] a foul or doing something to just not give a free open look on goal.

[00:05:00] Yeah, exactly.

[00:05:01] And as a keeper standpoint, rewatching the goal,

[00:05:05] you can make the plea for Graham about how he was trying to defend.

[00:05:11] He tried to force him out wide.

[00:05:13] He didn't really have much help out wide.

[00:05:15] Didn't really want...

[00:05:15] Couldn't really slow the play down because the guy had pace over him

[00:05:18] rather than shifting him towards the inside where he had archer and help inside.

[00:05:24] But when he did, he shifted the wrong shoulder and gave him that two yards

[00:05:28] of space where the guy did take advantage and get the shot off.

[00:05:31] And it was just well-placed.

[00:05:33] But when you're given that amount of space at this level,

[00:05:37] you can best believe the shot should come.

[00:05:39] Because I know what the end result is.

[00:05:40] I'm going to say that was a fantastic goal on their part,

[00:05:43] but revenge is a best serve cold, I do believe.

[00:05:48] Well, they did get one more about 20 seconds after this one,

[00:05:52] which is incredibly annoying to see just our kickoff,

[00:05:58] trying to play the ball a little bit.

[00:06:00] And honestly, I thought it might have been a foul against Marcanik

[00:06:05] on the way that they took the ball off of him.

[00:06:08] I mean, the referee didn't even pay any attention.

[00:06:12] Didn't wave play on and do anything.

[00:06:13] And they just countered quickly.

[00:06:17] Like this has been a battery issue that we've seen a little bit now

[00:06:21] is if a team is going to play as fast-paced this in a counterattack,

[00:06:28] they had five guys in the box.

[00:06:29] But our midfield was just a world too flat.

[00:06:32] You can't ask four defenders to cover five guys in the box.

[00:06:36] And they were left wide open on the back post and you guys take your pick.

[00:06:41] Go Zay.

[00:06:43] So we seemed a little susceptible to these counterattacks.

[00:06:47] What can we do differently to kind of insulate ourselves from that?

[00:06:52] Honestly, I think you just if we're playing the ball forward,

[00:06:55] play the ball back and shift it around the line

[00:06:58] and push the field up a little bit to give you a little more breathing room.

[00:07:02] If they're going to press you.

[00:07:05] If you're passing the ball past them

[00:07:07] and switching the field back two or three times,

[00:07:09] they're going to lay the press off a little bit

[00:07:11] because it's just going to wear them out in about 10 minutes.

[00:07:14] So I don't know.

[00:07:15] I mean, this one was unfortunate,

[00:07:17] but there's not really much more you can do than let the ball do the work for you.

[00:07:22] Yeah, at this moment in the game,

[00:07:24] they have to realize that they have to stay focused tuned in the entire time

[00:07:29] and that the referee you have to go by the referee's whistle.

[00:07:32] If he's not going to blow it, you got to get up and you got to keep going.

[00:07:36] It's just plain and simple as that.

[00:07:37] That's the nature of the game

[00:07:39] until the referee blows his whistle.

[00:07:41] There is nothing to be said.

[00:07:44] Right. So it's it is unfortunate,

[00:07:47] but end of the day we got to respond

[00:07:50] to the mistakes that we created in the back and looks like we did with

[00:07:55] this guy named Nick, this Nick guy.

[00:07:59] Who is this guy?

[00:08:00] Last week, he's running around with a brace, right?

[00:08:03] And then he wants to show off a little more with the fantastic goal.

[00:08:07] I don't know, Patrick, do you think it was a pretty good goal?

[00:08:11] Not much to talk about.

[00:08:12] Big Dick Nick just takes the ball left footed, smashes it,

[00:08:15] side top bends like what else you can talk about on this?

[00:08:19] I mean, this guy is just killing it.

[00:08:21] I'm going to be so upset when he moves on

[00:08:25] to bigger and greater things in the future.

[00:08:27] But for right now, I'm just going to revel

[00:08:30] in this enjoyment that are Nick Marquena goals.

[00:08:34] How far out was that show?

[00:08:36] I mean, it was just 20 yards.

[00:08:38] It was just a minute.

[00:08:40] Yeah, 20.

[00:08:41] 20 yards, which is a little bit maybe 20 to 24,

[00:08:45] just from the angle he took on that as well.

[00:08:48] So.

[00:08:50] A beauty.

[00:08:51] What I'm one of the best goals of the year for sure.

[00:08:55] It just kind of looked like he was messing around

[00:08:58] like something in the backyard, right?

[00:09:00] Just like, I'm going to take it. Boom.

[00:09:03] And also, it's the back of the net top corner keeper didn't have a chance.

[00:09:06] I think the keeper saw the whole way, right?

[00:09:10] Well, it's it's one of those things too,

[00:09:12] where it's just like the endies first goal where Graham slipped,

[00:09:17] made that little simple mistake and gave him the space

[00:09:20] for Andy's defender.

[00:09:22] Unfortunately, his defending was pretty solid.

[00:09:26] It's just Nick has that ability to say,

[00:09:29] I'm going to shoot it regardless.

[00:09:31] You better know or to come at me and dive to come get this ball

[00:09:35] because if I shoot it, it's going to go in

[00:09:37] and you put it out there on the table.

[00:09:39] Yeah, you can't stop that.

[00:09:41] Even as a defender, what are you going to do?

[00:09:42] Slide at him.

[00:09:43] He has this ability to touch the ball

[00:09:46] half a yard to still have his wind up and hit it.

[00:09:50] Like it's insane.

[00:09:51] The defender, the defender's arm length away from him.

[00:09:54] Like he's tight to him.

[00:09:55] It's not like the only thing the defender could have done

[00:09:57] is he push him off the ball or to tackle him.

[00:10:00] And Nick is standing over top of the ball when he shoots it.

[00:10:03] Like it's not like he has the ball

[00:10:05] way out in front of him and he's running onto it to go strike it.

[00:10:08] You know, it's at its feet.

[00:10:11] So enough about Nick, because I think he's just he's just a flash in the pan.

[00:10:17] Nick, the mechanic is just he just gets one lucky goal.

[00:10:21] Well, OK, OK, two really good goals last week,

[00:10:23] then one really good goal here.

[00:10:25] Oh, yeah, that's right.

[00:10:26] He got an assist earlier, right?

[00:10:28] Yeah, yeah, just involved in all of them so far.

[00:10:32] Stats are through the roof right now.

[00:10:36] You know, and I'm tired of seeing another player on top of everything

[00:10:39] and getting all the accolades when Nick is just he is just beast mode

[00:10:44] and just every time showing up everywhere and giving assist

[00:10:48] scoring goals from just incredible places.

[00:10:50] Well, anyways, enough about Nick, because I think he's

[00:10:53] I think we won't hear anything else about him rest of the year.

[00:10:56] Could be wrong, but I don't know.

[00:10:58] Yeah, maybe maybe for like eight more minutes.

[00:11:01] Or maybe I was a little disappointed it took so long for us to score a goal.

[00:11:06] And maybe Nick has held us up from that.

[00:11:08] Maybe Nick is the one holding us back.

[00:11:10] So instead in the first eight minutes, we got 19 minutes.

[00:11:12] We'll talk about talk about Nick maybe next week.

[00:11:15] If he does anything spectacular, well, anything.

[00:11:18] So let's talk about the second half.

[00:11:22] Yeah, not much for about 30 minutes in that second half.

[00:11:26] I mean, the chances were there.

[00:11:30] I will say there were a few.

[00:11:33] Better look chances by both teams, but nothing going in.

[00:11:37] So just to credit to the keepers on this, not necessarily defenders,

[00:11:40] but the keepers more so we're keeping.

[00:11:44] Indy in the game as well as us.

[00:11:47] And then we get into another set piece situation from a corner

[00:11:51] and seventy fifth minute chances create goals.

[00:11:55] And we get an own goal off of this one, fortunately for us.

[00:11:59] This is something that we teach the youth defenders to do.

[00:12:03] Simply you don't want to face your own goal defending, right?

[00:12:08] It's just plain and simple as that when you're facing your own goal

[00:12:11] and the ball is coming in, the most likely thing to happen,

[00:12:14] the easiest thing to happen is the ball just easily simply

[00:12:17] bounce right off of you and you carry the momentum

[00:12:20] and it goes right in your net.

[00:12:22] I saw the defender he immediately turns gives off of his knee.

[00:12:28] It goes right off of his knee off of his chest and his chest is poor.

[00:12:31] Right at the goal goes right in.

[00:12:33] It's just super unlucky for Andy, the very fortunate for us.

[00:12:37] Yeah, so what Ryan is saying, Indy, is that your players need

[00:12:41] to go back to youth level and learn the basics.

[00:12:44] I mean, if I was a keeper, I'd be having a word with my defenders afterwards.

[00:12:47] I'll be teaching them everything again.

[00:12:51] Well, if you're if you're the defender at the back post,

[00:12:53] why are you even facing your own goal in the first place?

[00:12:56] You should be either backpedal to the line to clear it out

[00:13:00] or put a head on it to get it out.

[00:13:01] Like there's no need for you to be facing your own goal in that situation.

[00:13:04] There wasn't anyone around him really.

[00:13:06] He had about three yards of space around him.

[00:13:09] So easily just turn your body to the wing to get out.

[00:13:13] Patrick, you're a defender by trade, right?

[00:13:17] Yeah, for sure. Why don't you do that?

[00:13:19] You don't. That's the simple answer.

[00:13:21] You don't do that.

[00:13:22] You look like a buffoon.

[00:13:25] I'll be nice.

[00:13:26] I don't know what he was doing that far off.

[00:13:28] He was at three yards out, like sprinting back to his goal with his leg up in the air.

[00:13:34] What are you doing, man?

[00:13:36] If anything fall to the ground and let the ball go by you

[00:13:39] and hopefully it just skips past the goal, you don't touch that ball.

[00:13:44] That is bad.

[00:13:47] Mr. King, thank you very much.

[00:13:49] We'll always use the extra goal if you can put it in for us.

[00:13:52] Then hey, I'll go for that.

[00:13:54] Before that, we had a couple subs coming on.

[00:13:57] Looks like we had Jake coming on for Gutierrez and

[00:14:03] Robbie, great Scotsman, coming on for Chris Allen.

[00:14:07] Do you think that changed any part of the game?

[00:14:09] I think it sped up our offense a little bit, taking Gutierrez off.

[00:14:14] I mean, this is about the time we see him come off in previous games.

[00:14:17] Unfortunately for him, I think this was just one of his worst games where he

[00:14:21] really slowed our play down a little too much and tried to take it on himself

[00:14:25] without just playing the flow of style that we've been used to seeing in the past

[00:14:28] couple of games and every just hindered us and that's why he came off.

[00:14:33] For the record, I think Diego is really good on the ball.

[00:14:37] I think he's really good on the ball.

[00:14:39] Sometimes I think that people are so technically talented at the ball at their

[00:14:43] feet, sometimes they do kind of slow the play down a little bit if they're not

[00:14:49] passionate as quickly as we need.

[00:14:51] But I think Diego is fantastic on the ball.

[00:14:54] But I agree with you.

[00:14:55] He's kind of slowed things down on that side, which causes little problems.

[00:15:00] Yeah, I agree with you.

[00:15:01] I think he's a fantastic player.

[00:15:03] I just think this setting

[00:15:05] he gave us what he was going to give us.

[00:15:07] And I think just the style of play we were locked into.

[00:15:11] I mean, we want the clear cut favorites in this game just from our chances

[00:15:15] created, shots created.

[00:15:18] And I think it was just time to maybe switch it up and let's go for the gung ho

[00:15:21] and put this thing to bed.

[00:15:23] Exactly right.

[00:15:25] As you just said, Pat, this is more of a tactical change than anything.

[00:15:29] He gave us what we needed in that game from him.

[00:15:32] And we got to a point where we needed to take him off because we needed to play

[00:15:37] this type of style against Andy.

[00:15:39] Now we had to play the quick pace, the one, two's

[00:15:42] in going into that motion rather than more of the technical style because

[00:15:47] there's going to be certain games this year where his abilities are going

[00:15:50] to shine and be amazing in those games.

[00:15:52] But right now, an indie on the road,

[00:15:55] him to come off and then to switch him out was a good move in that moment.

[00:16:00] So, Ryan, what do you think Jake gives us that Diego wasn't giving us?

[00:16:05] Well, the difference between Gutierrez and Jake that is very noticeable is

[00:16:10] that Jake comes to the ball always in a constant.

[00:16:13] He's always checking to making the quick runs off of it, but staying short

[00:16:17] to make that space and always stay connected to the one, two's.

[00:16:21] He's also not afraid to come back and put a challenge in.

[00:16:24] Yeah, I think he's he's just that like workhorse you can turn to and say, hey,

[00:16:29] we need to close this thing out.

[00:16:30] I'm going to need you to just give me everything and he puts it in there.

[00:16:34] And if he gets a card or something, you don't really mind because you see him

[00:16:39] kind of roll the guys up around them and be like, hey,

[00:16:41] pick up the pace a little bit.

[00:16:43] We have this. It's our game.

[00:16:44] Don't worry about it.

[00:16:47] What does Robbie give us that Chris wasn't giving us?

[00:16:51] I think it's just more of this change ups with him of

[00:16:55] putting fresh legs out there on the field.

[00:16:57] Chris has been running up and down the field

[00:17:00] with the counterattacks against Andy, then us going on to the attack and

[00:17:04] everything like that, but Chris had a pretty sound game.

[00:17:08] And it was just time for him to just to come off and to put fresh legs out

[00:17:12] there and to close this game out.

[00:17:14] I think that's just what ultimately came down to.

[00:17:17] At that moment, sixty fifth minute,

[00:17:19] you're kind of looking for, hey, who's my most tired guy out there?

[00:17:22] Who needs a sub? Where can I put a six in right away?

[00:17:26] Because you don't want to be, you don't want to have your team slowly deteriorate.

[00:17:30] And then last second, your whole team is just gone and you're two zero down again.

[00:17:36] Yeah, you're also just looking at like

[00:17:39] what's kind of the spot they're trying to exploit the most right now?

[00:17:42] They weren't going to the wing play.

[00:17:44] They were coming back to the middle most of the game.

[00:17:47] So you're naturally just going to get tired if your center mids are having to

[00:17:51] cover outside and back in outside, back in.

[00:17:54] And I think it was just exactly what you said, Ryan, let's get some fresh legs on.

[00:17:58] Let's settle the game down a little bit in our favor and just

[00:18:02] kind of take hold of it for once.

[00:18:05] So shortly after those two substitutions, like we said, we backtrack a little bit.

[00:18:10] Oh, we got our own goal.

[00:18:11] Thank you, Mr. King.

[00:18:13] And then.

[00:18:16] I don't know who wants to talk about this.

[00:18:18] I'm going to have to step away from this.

[00:18:20] I don't want to get stabbed later on.

[00:18:24] The brogmas continues.

[00:18:26] The brogmas continues.

[00:18:27] It's creeping us all out.

[00:18:29] It's creeping some listeners out.

[00:18:30] But go ahead, Ryan.

[00:18:32] Tell us about whatever MD Gus.

[00:18:35] MD, the man himself has done it again.

[00:18:40] The ability to hold the ball up with two defenders on his back.

[00:18:45] And guess what?

[00:18:47] He has now shown us the ability that he does not need to just lay off the ball

[00:18:51] anymore, he can now turn and take two defenders on,

[00:18:55] shrug them off with his strength and put a top ends.

[00:18:59] Absolutely class to shut out this game to close it out.

[00:19:03] It was.

[00:19:05] I was I was running down the street when I saw the goal.

[00:19:08] Yeah, I was jumping up and down trying not to spill my beer.

[00:19:12] But I will say

[00:19:14] it's an awesome it's an awesome play from a striker just shows his strength

[00:19:18] and ability to just turn.

[00:19:21] And it means everything encompassed in a central striker in one play.

[00:19:25] The strength to turn

[00:19:27] the ability to hold a defender off of you.

[00:19:30] And then also the skill to cut the ball back on two defenders and then pop base it

[00:19:37] again on what was the stronger side for the goalie.

[00:19:41] So beautiful play and huge shout out to Econza for the assist on that one.

[00:19:47] So he got his goal and he got another assist for himself in this.

[00:19:52] We ended up rep up that match for two didn't start out comfortable,

[00:19:56] but it seemed at the end it was pretty comfortable.

[00:20:00] A lot of players come in there.

[00:20:02] Oh, I want to talk about one particular player.

[00:20:05] So when this season started out,

[00:20:07] better does a fan fest season ticket holders come in and get to meet.

[00:20:12] Last year was just a couple of players.

[00:20:14] They just put a couple on stage.

[00:20:15] I mean, this year they did a fantastic thing and brought in all the players.

[00:20:21] I think I was talking to Mr.

[00:20:23] DeSantos and this young man comes running up and he just had this grin on his face.

[00:20:28] He said, I'm Matt Dean.

[00:20:30] I just signed with the battery.

[00:20:33] It hasn't been announced.

[00:20:34] I'm so excited.

[00:20:35] And I was like, this is the youth coming in.

[00:20:38] The other night we saw him with his first start.

[00:20:41] So congratulations, Matt, for going in there and getting some couple of minutes

[00:20:46] in there, it just it's just a battaclur coming all the way from Georgia,

[00:20:50] coming up here to join the team, academy player and just

[00:20:54] his youth and just his enjoyment of the game just come through that first night.

[00:20:59] And I saw it on his face when he come in.

[00:21:01] And then when we waited around after the players come off the pitch,

[00:21:05] talked to Matt for a few seconds and he still had that same grin on his face.

[00:21:09] And man, what a great thing to see.

[00:21:15] Yeah, you love to see it.

[00:21:16] This is whatever San Wasan see a young guy

[00:21:20] getting in, getting some minutes, someone to root for someone who's like,

[00:21:25] I don't know, Brad, every time we've seen this kid,

[00:21:27] has he not just had ear to ear smile grin on his face?

[00:21:31] Just the happiest dude out there.

[00:21:32] Like, I'm glad he every time.

[00:21:35] Yeah, every time I'm glad he got some minutes on this.

[00:21:37] Like, I hope it's the first of many to come for him.

[00:21:42] So an interesting thing that we've talked about in the past,

[00:21:45] we've kind of batted around or kicked around, I should say,

[00:21:48] was the Torres versus Gutierrez person.

[00:21:54] Yeah, I feel like it was a good move for this game to give Gutierrez the minutes.

[00:22:00] He's been working hard.

[00:22:01] Torres had the last two games.

[00:22:03] We saw what he's done and I think it was time to give Gutierrez the start back.

[00:22:08] And with his time that he did in that 60 so minutes that he played,

[00:22:12] it was really good.

[00:22:13] Torres not even traveling for this game.

[00:22:15] I think he's getting rested possibly for next game,

[00:22:19] but I don't see him getting the start next game.

[00:22:23] I have a little, a little different opinion here, Brad.

[00:22:26] I don't know if you want to touch on it first,

[00:22:28] but I think Gutierrez in these certain situations is just

[00:22:33] kindness slowing our creativity down a little bit.

[00:22:37] You see it in our build up play.

[00:22:39] We can build it up from our center

[00:22:41] mids and kind of kick it out and then we force it back in and back out.

[00:22:45] And then eventually we get it into a dangerous situation.

[00:22:49] I eat the box or a shot right outside the box or even win a corner off of it.

[00:22:55] I think too much in this game, we just saw him kind of hold the ball a little too long

[00:23:00] as players are making forward runs and then look to come back,

[00:23:05] but then look to go back on his own and not really lay the ball off.

[00:23:09] Whereas Torres, we kind of see a little more in these situations.

[00:23:14] Plays a little more like neck.

[00:23:15] He plays a lot more forward.

[00:23:17] He tries to just run in, get in a little bit behind on a defender first

[00:23:22] and then brings his head up to look for something instead of cutting it back

[00:23:26] and laying it off.

[00:23:27] And I think we're going to see a huge difference in these two guys

[00:23:32] for this season just for the games that they are picked.

[00:23:36] We can kind of predict

[00:23:39] what the coach is thinking in this moment of like, is there a weak spot to attack

[00:23:44] or is this a game where we need to bring the ball back and control it and like

[00:23:48] force them out a little bit with Gutierrez

[00:23:51] or play Nick a little bit more in the center role and have Torres kind of take

[00:23:57] the role of men need to come out and approach him with the ball on the outside

[00:24:01] and create space in the center.

[00:24:03] So I mean, it's a good problem to have.

[00:24:06] But I think for this certain game, I don't think this was the right call.

[00:24:10] I mean, I rather have seen Torres up there trading a little more space and a little

[00:24:14] more positive opportunity for us because again, we were outshot in this game.

[00:24:20] And it's the first time that's happened.

[00:24:22] We were kind of just like on our heels a little too much.

[00:24:26] And coming from what we've seen in the past two or three weeks,

[00:24:30] it's it's not a step back because obviously it's another road game.

[00:24:34] It's another win.

[00:24:35] It's points in the bank.

[00:24:36] But it's something we can learn from and move on in the coming weeks

[00:24:39] and see how we can utilize these two guys in different roles.

[00:24:43] Do you think it's kind of a horses for courses kind of selection?

[00:24:47] I think so.

[00:24:48] Like you can look at certain teams and how they line up or is there an outside back

[00:24:55] that the center backs don't cover?

[00:24:57] And maybe you put Torres on where he just works in 1v1, whereas Gutierrez.

[00:25:02] I mean, he tends to hold the ball a little bit longer on the outside where

[00:25:06] Torres kind of directly goes at the guy.

[00:25:09] So like in those situations, you kind of know it's 1v1.

[00:25:12] If he beats him, we're going to get a good opportunity off of this.

[00:25:15] But I think we'll see that.

[00:25:16] I will definitely see that coming up in some games here.

[00:25:19] And that it's just something to look out for.

[00:25:21] It's not an issue, but it is something where you can kind of look at the game

[00:25:25] and maybe we're missing him a little creatively in the final third for our team in this one.

[00:25:32] I do I do enjoy that we have a choice of not necessarily like for like

[00:25:37] I've mentioned that before, but two different players have two different

[00:25:41] kind of skill sets that we can use

[00:25:45] you know, strategically against other teams based on what skills they have.

[00:25:50] For the record, I think all the battery players are awesome.

[00:25:54] And Brad, just just to touch on what you said again,

[00:25:58] this is one of the best teams the battery has had so far.

[00:26:02] And to have such a small roster as well.

[00:26:05] And to have literally every single play on this team,

[00:26:09] even on the bench would be a starter on any team in this league.

[00:26:14] Let's talk about team of the week.

[00:26:16] Emilio, all the energy he brings, you'll have to agree that the energy

[00:26:21] brings to the battery, to the pitch, to after the match, everything.

[00:26:27] Jumping on the nets down there at the south end.

[00:26:31] Emilio just brings a level energy that most other players don't bring.

[00:26:36] And he was honored to be named as one of the USL players of the week.

[00:26:42] Well, deserves like a goal and assists.

[00:26:45] And it's just the consistent play in the workhorse,

[00:26:48] like going, tracking the ball back, winning the ball to give it out to Nick

[00:26:53] and then running off of that to get your goal.

[00:26:55] But like having the vision to toss the ball to M.D.

[00:26:59] Myers and be like, he's going to wrong turn this guy and get in behind.

[00:27:04] It's like how we talks about just like the battery playing in this more of a free

[00:27:10] flow when you're happy and you're enjoying your football.

[00:27:14] Things just start creating so easily for them.

[00:27:18] And then he causes one of these center points where things just kind of go off

[00:27:23] of him and people are affected by it.

[00:27:25] Like off the pitch, this guy is amazing on the pitch even better.

[00:27:29] I'm just glad he got team of the week.

[00:27:32] I don't know if you've seen a cause after some of the battery helm games

[00:27:36] and how he interacts with the fans afterwards.

[00:27:39] But every time Emilio comes across that pitch and comes to the south

[00:27:44] stands to the supporter section with Barrow Charleston and he's cheering with us.

[00:27:49] He's going off of the drums and everything.

[00:27:52] And I've mentioned before on this podcast talking about the yellow wall and everything

[00:27:58] and the energy that the supporter section brings.

[00:28:01] Ikaza is the definition of the yellow wall.

[00:28:03] He is the supporter section.

[00:28:05] He is the saiyan fast of the team.

[00:28:09] He brings that energy and that's what he is there for, for this team.

[00:28:12] And it's vital to this team.

[00:28:15] I think if you talk to any battery fans or even people have been to a match or two,

[00:28:20] there's a couple names you can take off and they recognize.

[00:28:24] Number one is our captain, Leland Archer.

[00:28:26] Everybody knows who Leland is, right?

[00:28:29] I think the next one right up there is Emilio.

[00:28:32] Anybody seen him last season this season?

[00:28:35] He's I don't want to say a franchise player, but man,

[00:28:38] I love him to stay around for as long as he wants to stay around

[00:28:41] because he brings that energy to it just not even just on his play.

[00:28:45] But even after the match is fantastic.

[00:28:48] And it's so

[00:28:50] gratifying to see him score a great goal and make Team of the Week.

[00:28:54] So let's talk about the other

[00:28:56] persons that were listed on Team of the Week for the USL.

[00:28:59] And that is Coach Peerman.

[00:29:03] I mean, just with this, though, it's

[00:29:06] it's like it's almost expected it should be there.

[00:29:10] But Coach Peerman doesn't shouldn't care about this award.

[00:29:13] You know, he this award should be meaningless to him.

[00:29:17] He is playing with a chip on his shoulder because he was robbed from last year.

[00:29:21] Coach Peerman hands down coach of the year last year was robbed by USL.

[00:29:26] These coach of the week stuff like that.

[00:29:28] He's going to say, cool, this is nice.

[00:29:31] He's he's wanting that final and he is bringing it to Charleston.

[00:29:36] If you if you go back and look at the battery, I said this in the first podcast.

[00:29:40] The smartest thing for for Coach Peerman to have done is to have

[00:29:45] circled every single match, every single game that we dropped points in.

[00:29:49] And if you look at the games, the teams we've played last year compared to this year

[00:29:53] and the points we've dropped were already points ahead of where we were last year.

[00:29:58] Our goal differential is much better than what it was last year.

[00:30:01] I think we ended with like plus five or six.

[00:30:04] We're already a plus eight second best in the USL.

[00:30:06] You got to think he's playing with a little chip on his shoulder with this

[00:30:09] whole new team that we have with 19 players.

[00:30:13] Every single one of them can be a starter on any team in this league.

[00:30:17] It's hard not to imagine it.

[00:30:20] And then there's one other player that rarely pops up in any scoring sheet,

[00:30:25] anything like that.

[00:30:26] And that is.

[00:30:29] Nick Markianic.

[00:30:31] Death player of the week.

[00:30:34] Is he not well deserved in this one?

[00:30:37] How many Bayers have we seen on goals from him and not gold?

[00:30:40] Assist as well.

[00:30:41] Like this guy is everywhere on the pitch.

[00:30:45] You would think this guy is your stunner,

[00:30:47] attacking mid the way he distributes the ball and gets his teammates involved.

[00:30:51] So amazing.

[00:30:54] I love this guy like if there's one guy that you need to get a jersey of,

[00:30:59] get Nick's jersey.

[00:31:02] No, just I just have to congratulate Nick on a fantastic week.

[00:31:06] We got six points.

[00:31:08] He gets three goals on the week.

[00:31:11] Then assist or to assist.

[00:31:13] It's fantastic.

[00:31:15] Keep our team rolling and let's keep this energy going.

[00:31:18] He's doing fantastic ever since he's

[00:31:20] locked out to the outside wing.

[00:31:22] I think that's his that's his true home.

[00:31:25] Yeah, he's just dangerous everywhere.

[00:31:28] And I think that's just goes back to Coach

[00:31:30] Pyramid and his ability to recognize where players need to play on the field

[00:31:35] that helps benefit just not that particular player, but the team itself.

[00:31:40] And Nick, I think is somebody that embodies that.

[00:31:44] Not always getting goals, but he's getting assist, which are goals themselves.

[00:31:49] So let's look back at what we've accomplished.

[00:31:52] I say we are team of the batter if it's accomplished first match North Carolina

[00:31:57] away, we pull out a point.

[00:32:00] Second match Oakland roots.

[00:32:03] Rest a lot of point.

[00:32:06] And last year we lost to them.

[00:32:09] Finally, we get a home match.

[00:32:12] And we just bump on New Mexico.

[00:32:15] So we get three on there.

[00:32:16] We go to two more away matches, Miami, Rhode Island.

[00:32:20] We come back with four points from there and then we return home.

[00:32:24] And the team that is kind of the Cinderella of the USL right now,

[00:32:28] Louisville, we kind of do a little thumping on them.

[00:32:31] And then we go away again.

[00:32:33] Another three points.

[00:32:35] Yeah, and so Louisville at home, that's another game where we dropped points last

[00:32:40] year, we gained it this year, Miami on the road.

[00:32:43] We've never won there in seven, seven trips down there in Miami.

[00:32:47] That's another three points gain.

[00:32:49] So right there off the bat, there are six, seven points more than what we

[00:32:53] had last year just off of these earlier results.

[00:32:56] And it's really good that we're getting these away results now because you

[00:33:01] get these away results nice and early, you get your team in form.

[00:33:05] Now the back half of the season, you're sitting at home resting your players.

[00:33:08] You got all your home games now.

[00:33:10] That's very dangerous coming to play off time,

[00:33:13] especially when you get that high seating and all of our games are going

[00:33:16] to be at home in the battery.

[00:33:18] October is going to be a good month for battery fans.

[00:33:23] So we come off a win against Indie 11 and we move into another way match.

[00:33:30] In Oklahoma.

[00:33:32] Yeah, we just got another way match, unfortunately.

[00:33:36] And you guys are going to get so sick of hearing Patrick say

[00:33:40] the Ebb and Zost for the watch party.

[00:33:43] But once again, this will be our back to back watch party.

[00:33:47] And then we're finally going to have a homestead for more than one, more than one.

[00:33:51] So let's go out.

[00:33:53] Let's do a big watch party.

[00:33:55] Let's get excited.

[00:33:56] It's a six o'clock game.

[00:33:57] We're going to rough Tulsa up.

[00:34:00] They're going to wish that was just tornadoes coming through and not the battery,

[00:34:04] but regardless, let's support them.

[00:34:07] And then we have a banger back to back potentially back.

[00:34:14] Home game.

[00:34:15] So we'll see.

[00:34:17] So, Ryan, before you start talking, let's talk about Oklahoma's right?

[00:34:22] We have a couple of listeners out there.

[00:34:24] I'd like to give a shout out to the Papa Ronas family in Oklahoma.

[00:34:29] That's my brother-in-law's girlfriend's family out there in Oklahoma.

[00:34:33] So shout out to them.

[00:34:35] But Tulsa coming up, this is going to be another hard game for us.

[00:34:40] I'm predicting this game to be just like the Miami game for us to face.

[00:34:43] It's one of those struggling teams that's in the bottom of the West.

[00:34:47] But it's one of those teams that we tend to do play down to.

[00:34:51] Last year, we did beat them both times two to one.

[00:34:54] It was those struggling wins.

[00:34:56] I'm hoping we can put them away earlier this year.

[00:34:59] Tulsa.

[00:35:01] Had a red card in their last game in the 16th minute against Sacramento

[00:35:05] and then conceded a goal shortly after, but they did very well in the second half

[00:35:10] playing a man down and getting an equalizing goal in the 70th minute.

[00:35:14] And that's against their top the top team in the West.

[00:35:17] And then the week before that they had a 3-3 tie against Phoenix.

[00:35:20] So Tulsa sitting in ninth place in the West,

[00:35:24] they're playing actually pretty good soccer right now.

[00:35:26] They're just getting unlucky results.

[00:35:28] And I think it's going to be one of those brutal games for the battery that we

[00:35:31] need at result in Tulsa.

[00:35:36] Yes, Tulsa, another away game.

[00:35:38] Everyone's going to get so sick of hearing me say,

[00:35:41] Edmunds host, watch party, see you there.

[00:35:45] Let's go another W on the road.

[00:35:48] But I promise you this is our last

[00:35:51] match party that we have to watch there for at least two games,

[00:35:55] maybe three games because we have two home games coming out

[00:35:59] and potentially a US open home game coming up.

[00:36:05] Yes, the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

[00:36:09] It's one of the best tradition still going on in the US.

[00:36:12] Been around since 1914 for the round of 32,

[00:36:16] entering the round of 32 would be the top eight teams from the US championship

[00:36:21] from last year and then eight teams from the MLS,

[00:36:26] including that eight also includes the defending champs from last year,

[00:36:29] the Houston Dynamo.

[00:36:32] Again, just a little reminder, we have beaten the Dynamo, correct?

[00:36:38] Dynamo, Dallas, the fire,

[00:36:42] Chivas, USA, San Jose, earthquakes.

[00:36:45] I'd do some record against them the last so don't be scared if we get matched up.

[00:36:50] Yeah, and last year we made a deep run in the tournament as well.

[00:36:53] We made it to the quarterfinals and we sadly got knocked out by Inter Miami,

[00:36:57] pretty messy era in a result in Miami.

[00:37:00] Just won nothing loss and it was just heartbreaking.

[00:37:03] This year, I think we can make a deep run again.

[00:37:06] You know, if you look at it, we last year we entered in the second round.

[00:37:10] This year we got an automatic bid to the round of 32.

[00:37:13] So coming into this tournament, five wins and you win the final.

[00:37:17] So battery have a really good chance here.

[00:37:21] So I'm going to go into one of my rants.

[00:37:24] I don't care about MLS teams,

[00:37:27] right? I think the USL is going to rise up and be the league that everybody

[00:37:32] wants to play in. And so when the MLS did their little,

[00:37:36] I'm only going to provide so many teams to play in the US Open.

[00:37:40] LaMaur Hunt trophy

[00:37:43] tournament, I think it was a snub at the USL and all the teams below that work

[00:37:50] really hard to try to get in this tournament and get wins in this tournament.

[00:37:56] A great point there.

[00:37:58] This has been going on since 1914.

[00:38:01] No one forget that MLS was formed in 1993 as a bid for the US World Cup.

[00:38:08] So they don't have the high horse to stand on for this competition as the end all be

[00:38:13] all what we say goes, they are a part of this.

[00:38:17] They can contribute or not contribute, or we will create a league to pass them up.

[00:38:22] And I think that comes from US soccer standing strong.

[00:38:26] The US soccer must put their foot down when it comes to this.

[00:38:29] And they did.

[00:38:32] And in my opinion, they still let MLS walk over them a little bit in a way.

[00:38:36] But the world is now America is now seeing what MLS is really about and what

[00:38:43] this tournament is.

[00:38:44] I mean, if anybody else other than an MLS team wins this tournament, it's going to be massive.

[00:38:51] And I think MLS really short handed themselves by only sending eight teams in.

[00:38:56] This sounds like a great idea for some spin off podcast for us.

[00:39:00] I am a firm believer in the USL becoming a promotion

[00:39:05] relegation league and outperforming and surpassing the MLS.

[00:39:14] Edmond's O's Brewing Company last weekend, it was a blast.

[00:39:18] Had a lot of different people there.

[00:39:20] Some of the people that are associated with players watching the match.

[00:39:23] Edmond's O's Brewing Company offered up some swag to hand it out to some of the

[00:39:28] people that showed up, had a great time.

[00:39:30] Five dollar pints.

[00:39:32] Do it again this Saturday night.

[00:39:34] Had a lot of way matches.

[00:39:37] Joey behind the bar running everything, doing a fantastic job.

[00:39:43] Patrick, you have any questions of Ryan?

[00:39:46] I just haven't seen him there.

[00:39:48] Are you going to be here on this one?

[00:39:50] Unfortunately, I won't be there this week.

[00:39:53] I have a game to coach for West Ashley soccer.

[00:39:57] It's shout out to West Ashley soccer tonight for senior night.

[00:40:03] Jose, my senior goalie.

[00:40:05] Well done tonight.

[00:40:06] Kept the clean sheet 7-0 win.

[00:40:09] And young man, I look forward to what you'll be doing next year when

[00:40:13] you're continuing your academic and soccer career in Rome, Italy next year.

[00:40:23] Congratulations, man. That's awesome.

[00:40:26] Fantastic.

[00:40:32] on the battery, but we also want to focus on some of our local teams,

[00:40:44] If you're listening and you want us to talk

[00:40:59] I think that's all I got.

[00:41:02] See you guys out on Saturday night.

[00:42:26] Far from the Greek to all the Greeks.

[00:42:28] It's not stated.

[00:42:31] Hold on.
