[00:00:01] Welcome to Cannon Crue, a weekly podcast discussing the Charleston Battery. Your host Granit will
[00:00:23] be joined by other defenders of the fleet from the Black and Yellow supporters section,
[00:00:28] and together they will help fortify and conquer their other Cannon Crue.
[00:00:36] Welcome to the Cannon Crue podcast, I am Granit and I'm joined here by Patrick. What's up?
[00:00:44] And Ryan? Ryan? You there? Ryan's going to catch up with us later
[00:00:53] and we're here to talk about Charleston Battery and focus a little bit on
[00:00:56] the last meeting between Tulsa and the Battery. So let's start with some lineup changes.
[00:01:05] I think everyone can kind of relate to this, now just been flopping between two players so it looks
[00:01:13] like Pyramins got hits that lineup that he wants to go with and he's just going between Torres
[00:01:21] and Gutierrez for starters. Every game obviously we've seen them both play in, but that's the only real
[00:01:28] difference so Torres gets the start in this one versus Tulsa. I don't really know if it's something
[00:01:35] we predicted as much as just the style play that Tulsa plays where Torres may add a little bit
[00:01:43] more to the game but these guys have been going back and forth for four games now so
[00:01:49] Torres obviously starts against Tulsa on this one, Gutierrez was against Indy,
[00:01:56] Torres switched back for Louisville and then Gutierrez against Rhode Island and
[00:02:02] you would have to go back the previous game to have Gutierrez played against Miami as the last
[00:02:07] time we saw this position not change between the two. So I don't know, it's the only difference
[00:02:13] we see but it seems to be working through the Battery and you can't really knock it until
[00:02:17] something bad goes our way. Yeah, you know they're two kind of different players and how they approach
[00:02:23] the game. I noticed Torres against Tulsa here he kind of, I don't want to say hanging back but
[00:02:32] he was a little bit less forward than when Gutierrez comes in and he is more on the attacking
[00:02:37] side so maybe that's what they're doing. I did have a quick one for you. Is it just his
[00:02:43] more forward play from Torres as opposed to Gutierrez who seems to like, I don't know maybe his
[00:02:49] vision is just a little more of like who can I pass it to or Torres is a little more head down
[00:02:54] player? Do you think it's just confusing the opposition? I don't know. I kind of see it the
[00:02:59] other way around when Gutierrez gets the ball on his foot it's hard to get it off there and he
[00:03:02] likes to go at players one-on-one. He's really technical with the ball and he seems to try
[00:03:09] to tack down that sideline. Torres under the hand he has awesome passing stats from this last game
[00:03:15] and he seems to, he's not afraid of the opposition at one point he had opposing player
[00:03:22] in his left hand and opposing player in his right hand and he dribbled right through both of them
[00:03:27] dragging them along trying to keep them out of the way and he was very successful so it's kind
[00:03:31] of like two different types of players and maybe it is maybe just coaches give them all minutes
[00:03:38] or hey maybe it's he sees a weakness in the other team and that's when he plays Gutierrez
[00:03:44] and he sees another weakness and that's when they play Torres and maybe the weakness this
[00:03:48] weekend we'll talk about later might be just crazy insane shots. But that's some good thoughts
[00:03:54] and see how the next match against Las Vegas see who gets to start that one. First I want to
[00:04:00] talk about the fantastic turnout at Edmunds O's Brewing Company. Esme's about 80 battery supporters
[00:04:06] there having a great time nice and loud had a couple special guests there from from the ownership group
[00:04:15] Rob was there helping me give out the half-time drawings and it was just a real fun experience.
[00:04:21] Again Edmunds O's does a fantastic job supporting all the supporters and making sure beer's
[00:04:27] flowing and making sure everybody's getting what they need all the TVs were on the broadcast the
[00:04:33] volume was up it was a really really good time. That's awesome yeah I was set and said I had to miss
[00:04:41] it unfortunately I was out a little sick this weekend so didn't want to get anyone else sick
[00:04:50] but fortunately enough for us we don't really have to deal with a little
[00:04:54] watch party for the next couple games which is a little positive thing a little home stand for once
[00:05:01] so yeah I'm excited for this. I am too it's hopefully it's a great night I was going to
[00:05:07] be a great night it's always great now even when we're not doing well it's still a great
[00:05:10] experience at Patriots Point and watching the black and yellow go out there and we'll get to
[00:05:16] now really know where we want to stand and where we want to observe the match especially
[00:05:21] with the tunnel there and the players coming out it's pretty interesting last time Patrick you and I
[00:05:29] hung around a little bit after the match and got to see some of the players talk to them as they
[00:05:33] were coming back off the pitch and they were in a really good mood so I'd invite anybody who
[00:05:37] out there and you know you get to get kind of up close to the players and they're giving kids
[00:05:41] high fives taking pictures stuff like that it was a great experience. So let's talk about
[00:05:47] couple of the big moments of the match and again the doctor was in the house
[00:05:54] opened up the scoring. Yeah we didn't have to wait long this time Granite so nine minutes
[00:06:01] Charleston known for our hospitals, our amazing staff, our contribution to the medical society
[00:06:09] and here's another member in MD Myers. Fourth goal of the season.
[00:06:15] Miss again coming up big dribbling the ball up about 20-30 yards creating the space.
[00:06:21] I honestly probably blacked out and thought that he's just the man who created the ball but
[00:06:28] went in doubt Nick gets a touch to head it on and get the assist and then
[00:06:33] MD calmly finishes the day and nine minutes in battery up.
[00:06:39] I love that the little flick from the header from Nick. The other thing that was pretty
[00:06:45] interesting is MD getting in the space. It's so much space. I don't know what on that side
[00:06:54] I think he did it later on too. I don't know I don't know how you tell me aren't defenders
[00:07:00] supposed to be kind of like communicating with each other and have a nice back line there so
[00:07:04] boards don't get behind them. I think Nick's the guy in this play like they're just so worried the
[00:07:11] ball is coming to him and they don't expect this flick that it just he hits it and they're
[00:07:19] like mentally committing to him and it's just off to the races. It's like
[00:07:25] Nick, Secretariat in the Kentucky Derby he's gone. There's no one catching him. He's on his own
[00:07:32] and yeah I don't know. I mean Nick is someone to worry about so I can see why the defenders
[00:07:39] kind of stepped towards him but great goal by MD Byers at the end of the day he still
[00:07:45] looked good in the back of the net and he did very calmly.
[00:07:49] Almost with surgical precision would you call it that?
[00:07:54] Yeah almost like he went to school for six years to get the doctorate in goal scores.
[00:08:01] Well you know he's not a medical doctor and we're all kind of choked around about that but
[00:08:05] he does have a PhD. What it is we'll find out later but right now it's a PhD in scoring goals.
[00:08:16] So as batter is getting their rhythm and incredible now you and I are both big
[00:08:25] Juan David Torres fans. I think he's a incredible player. He's strong on the ball
[00:08:35] and he's getting in his groove and the doctor goes in and he separates, dispossesses a Tulsa player
[00:08:43] from a ball Torres at the half line and then something just magical happens.
[00:08:52] Backer IQ. I mean this is what you want in someone that you sign who you think is going to be an
[00:08:59] exciting person for the entire season and we haven't talked about them in a negative way
[00:09:07] but we've talked about them in a way of oh when's he gonna get this first goal?
[00:09:12] When's he gonna kick it in? And it just turns out his first goal is just gonna be uh you know what I
[00:09:19] think I'll just turn have a look at the keeper from half field and I'm just gonna blast it in
[00:09:25] because my soccer IQ is a lot higher than theirs right now and what a way to start your Charleston
[00:09:34] battery scoring career and usl championship scoring career then potentially the goal of the season we
[00:09:44] already know it's goal of the week. We've seen the things come out this is happening. This could
[00:09:51] be goal of the season no one expected it and it was mesmerizing to watch. It was like top
[00:09:58] bans it wasn't like just some sloppy you know just um the keeper's way out of position
[00:10:03] type of goal they had there was another goal by another team that was about the same distance
[00:10:07] a little bit further but it bounced in front of the goal because the keeper so far in a position
[00:10:12] the same result got a goal but it wasn't as beautiful in this excellent shot that was just
[00:10:19] precisely placed above the keeper into the back of the net. You can see the keeper turn
[00:10:25] like he's even running at it and he just knows he really can't do much on that trajectory
[00:10:32] and hey Ryan what would you do as a keeper on that one where you just got to eat it right?
[00:10:37] No that one you immediately have to be aware and alert that that's always going to happen
[00:10:42] and you have to quickly drop your back shoulder and elevate yourself to extend your arm fully
[00:10:47] out so you can cover from the crossbar and out and as you can tell that keeper as soon as
[00:10:53] he kind of hopped up he just did like the little twirl spin he never really fully laid
[00:10:57] out for because he knew he was beat and that sense he truly didn't know that Torres would have shot
[00:11:04] it from there he was not expecting it and Torres carried it he didn't leave it short and that's what
[00:11:09] the key here is is not under hitting it it's giving yourself the opportunity to get it into
[00:11:14] the goal so you'd rather over hit it than under hit it and the keeper just misjudged it.
[00:11:20] I mean let's be honest there's not there's not many people who can hit the ball like this
[00:11:25] so you don't expect it at all from a midfielder yet alone aware to turn ahead maybe a center
[00:11:32] defensive mid or a big center back just mashing power through it right?
[00:11:38] Yes so the keeper for Tulsa they had saved the week last week and this week he's featured in
[00:11:43] goal of the week against him so he's made some TV minutes for two different reasons.
[00:11:49] Not only goal of the week but also ESPN top 10.
[00:11:52] Coming in at number six right?
[00:11:55] I turned it off at number six so that was my number one.
[00:12:02] There was nothing controversial in a lot of games but the battery game the PK I don't think it was
[00:12:07] a PK. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I don't know the referee was in a good the center ref
[00:12:16] was in a great position he was right there outside the 18 yard box he was watching the play
[00:12:22] not I don't think he was necessarily straight on but a little bit of an angle so he had some
[00:12:26] trying to get space between the players so we could see and it simply looked like
[00:12:31] Lloyd put his foot in front of the ball and the attacking player tripped over it
[00:12:36] because it was odd the ball come bouncing out behind him it wasn't even you know he
[00:12:42] I don't know what it was I don't know what the center thought it was other than the guy
[00:12:46] throwing himself to the ground after a great just very simple tackle that you know you tell your
[00:12:52] youth players just put your foot in front of the ball and that's what looked like happened so maybe
[00:12:57] I don't know Ryan your thought my honest opinion and it's I want everyone to know it's my honest
[00:13:03] opinion the way the game was going it's two to zero at the time a few moments later as a
[00:13:09] referee you know the home team is down they get a controversial call right in the box I think
[00:13:17] the referee is going to give it to him every single time right before halftime I've seen it
[00:13:22] it's happened not only in this game but it has happened across the league in almost eight games
[00:13:28] so far this season so it's averaging one game a week where this is at least happening across
[00:13:33] the league where a team will be down one or two zero and then kind of that controversial
[00:13:40] pen is it a pen or is it not and it's given to the home team you know to see if it would
[00:13:46] wondering to see if it's to make it more of an interesting match maybe or if it's just to
[00:13:51] see if there's hope there for the other team but the battery absolutely just without question
[00:13:57] put that to bed with an immediate response after the penalty
[00:14:03] yeah I'm gonna make one more comment about penalties so the announcers who were doing a decent job
[00:14:08] they kind of rushed it off is that because the battery players won't protest I guess
[00:14:14] surrounding the center official yelling at him which they shouldn't do anyways even if they
[00:14:20] disagree with this call they kind of chalked it up like well it must have been a penalty
[00:14:24] because there was nobody protest yeah I have let let me give two cents on this real quick
[00:14:33] I think we all agree whether you're a battery fan first and you casually watch any other soccer
[00:14:41] we all will occasionally watch a Premier League game that's on the weekend that's what is
[00:14:46] just broadcast to us in the US and it's a lot of consumption for me personally it's a little
[00:14:52] tough seeing games like this where a call is not super clear cut either way that my first reaction
[00:15:03] watching it is just oh they'll take a quick look at that I think this is as much as we bitch about
[00:15:11] the AR and what it brought to the Premier League I think they get a lot more right than wrong
[00:15:16] in that instance and especially watching the USL championship I think this is one of the only things
[00:15:25] that could be implemented to actually make a big change in the whole system and take a little
[00:15:31] pressure off the rest because it shouldn't be on a ref just to make that judgment call
[00:15:36] hey you're down two nil it's a home game like it should just be clear cut I don't need
[00:15:42] home fans bitching at me let's check the replay real quick quick check in his ear hey guess what not
[00:15:49] a pk is a pk and we move on I think everyone is fans can at least appreciate that aspect more than
[00:15:57] what I think what we've seen for years in past where it's just the ref is a little biased because
[00:16:02] the team is getting a little bit of a beatdown yeah and I don't think that I would not think
[00:16:09] that center refs and ARs go in there with a bias but you know you never know and I will say that I think
[00:16:15] he referee made a great advantage call on our first goal and you know usually if it's mid
[00:16:26] halfway of the field you don't see a lot of vantage calls but he played advantage that allowed
[00:16:31] us to eventually score that goal I was gonna say like Ryan said obviously it's something we
[00:16:37] can talk about but not much for the team themselves to dwell on because they got it back right away
[00:16:44] around 41 minute mark ball makes his way to nick nick does a nice little pass well MD gets a nice
[00:16:53] little space behind defenders again nick does a nice little pass to him and then the doctor does what
[00:17:03] it goes a little wide off post nick following the play
[00:17:08] we'll tap in that doctor pulls the Torah is on this one I'll say yeah and if this just goes to
[00:17:16] having that great chemistry that bond with the players and in fighting for every single
[00:17:22] chance and opportunity not giving up on a play you know a lot of players even in high school
[00:17:28] that I just coached today I saw a lot of players that once the ball was kind of kicked to a certain
[00:17:33] area they just started walking or gave up on the play when you know you put a little effort into
[00:17:38] a little sprint you can actually get to it and MD has shown them every single game this season
[00:17:43] and it's awesome to now see other players now sitting off of that energy and getting in
[00:17:48] and getting those goals now because you've seen MD score a couple of those goals now
[00:17:53] nick is getting those goals and I wouldn't doubt if somebody else get those goals next week you know
[00:17:59] so it's really nice to see and getting more opportunities to score is always fantastic
[00:18:06] it's kind of that basic principle follows follow the shot right
[00:18:11] I was just watching him back and it's gotta be a little deflating I think
[00:18:17] every single defender on Tulsa was expecting MD to score they just as soon as he shot it
[00:18:22] they all just sat flat yeah and then you just see nicks the only person running
[00:18:29] yeah that's that literally is clear cut and dry of players who are willing and wanting
[00:18:35] to fight for the ball and players who simply just gave up on the play and they did they just
[00:18:40] turned around and walked they thought the ball was already going in and nicks like nope but now
[00:18:44] it is and now it's three to one going into halftime totally different game than a two
[00:18:50] to one going into halftime now you're up three to one after just conceding a pen but you just went
[00:18:55] right back down the field and scored four minutes later it's always nice to score going in the half
[00:19:00] you know I know there's a couple minutes before but still that's kind of especially putting you up
[00:19:04] three to one has to be a little bit challenging to the opposition especially knowing that your
[00:19:11] three goals have all come from open play and the one goal you conceded was just from a
[00:19:17] simple mistake in the back line it was just a simple mistake simple pen
[00:19:21] you're gonna lock it down now you're gonna lock it down now in the second half and
[00:19:25] you know no worries there I want to talk about just quickly was the demi ball through Torres to
[00:19:32] Icaza we're just interesting just quick little thing and Icaza is off and running it was a nice
[00:19:41] little play they got caught a lot of people off guard and really let Icaza out in the open field
[00:19:47] go in towards a goal yeah I feel like this is a play that really opened up the first half for us
[00:19:54] so like it's such a smart play by Torres to recognize that Icaza is running in behind him
[00:20:02] that he'll get this ball in like 30 more yards of space and just don't stop the ball because
[00:20:07] the play is going to be so much better if you just let it run behind you but you can see almost
[00:20:14] from this point if you go back for anyone listening if you can go back and watch the highlight
[00:20:20] watch this play if it's on there and just see how much the game turns like the defense almost
[00:20:26] just depths back and is lost from this point forward because they don't know what to expect
[00:20:32] from any of our attacking players there's too much overlapping runs there's too much one two balls
[00:20:37] there's way too much from the battery perspective of covering everyone and running off the ball
[00:20:45] after you play it for them to even know where they're at in their own box which is it's a
[00:20:50] beautiful play I wish we would have scored on it but I really feel like this is one of these
[00:20:55] turning points in a game that opened it up for us yeah and talking about the build up trying to
[00:21:02] gather the back and moving the ball forward a lot of those plays started with just kind of a basic
[00:21:08] passing triangle you know Maloy or uh Alan would slide over to one side and kind of joined a little
[00:21:15] passing triangle fun and it bounced around between two or three of them back to Greenis back
[00:21:20] to the other side passed around between three of them until we could get plays like that which
[00:21:25] opened it up a lot so just our control and I think that's shown through the stats for the first half
[00:21:35] I mean we had to be dominant in that first half right I know you're the stat guy
[00:21:39] granted you have some for us because I felt like we dominated 59 possession 10 shots
[00:21:48] five on target just in the first half I mean some of those numbers when you got 10 shots and five on
[00:21:52] target that's some teams aren't even getting that in a full 90 and here we did we just
[00:21:59] clip that out in the first half which really put us ahead I think not just goal wise but
[00:22:06] mentally against Tulsa second half starts Tulsa comes out a little stronger team
[00:22:15] the crying they're pressing they had a lot more possession of the ball we were sitting back a
[00:22:19] little more but then he's the one the only the man the myth the legend himself Dr. Myers
[00:22:30] every single game this man is going to get in the position to score and he has done so
[00:22:37] every single time he started ever since I called out the North Carolina game for this
[00:22:41] man to start he has scored or assisted in every single game and he continues to put himself in a
[00:22:47] vital position in the middle of both center backs to continue to press to continue to go forward
[00:22:52] to continue to draw the fenders and guess what no matter who is on this man he is still going
[00:22:58] to provide you a goal and the fact that we now have an aerial threat with a beautiful header
[00:23:03] going across the goal frame I'm done that my man has won player of the season already
[00:23:10] I'm already calling it and I'm just so fascinated he's going to have a highlight reel of at least
[00:23:17] 20 plus goals this season and thank you Aaron Malloy for the fantastic ball in there that was
[00:23:26] that wasn't the crazy up against the connection line it just puts it in there with such pace that
[00:23:31] the doctor just got to think about it goes off glances off his head back into the net
[00:23:36] I want to see how these training sessions go because the way these guys they're chemistry the
[00:23:41] connection it's just everything just looks so beautiful like they've been doing it first
[00:23:47] years now like but playing with each other and having that build the connection the trust
[00:23:52] with each other knowing that they're going to be there it's just so beautiful to continue to
[00:23:57] watch and they continue to yet again improve and get better and below our minds each and
[00:24:04] every time they step out on the field deja vu have we not seen Malloy from almost this is an exact
[00:24:10] spot in the field across the ball in last time it was a free kick to Myers but this time open play
[00:24:17] same exact spot header back post goal like right you talk about trading I think
[00:24:25] this is what they're doing in training because they see this base that they can exploit to maybe
[00:24:31] draw a few people out and whip this cross in because they're attacking the ball we talked about
[00:24:35] the first week once these guys are getting a little rhythm trusting each other getting on the
[00:24:41] end of these balls goals will start flying in and now you're seeing it like there there's no
[00:24:47] hesitation they're like hey you're going to whip that ball in we're crashing it we're
[00:24:51] going to get this ball even the shot he hit off the post marcanic sprays onto it he's
[00:24:56] going to clean it up like there's no hesitation from these guys and I love watching them play because
[00:25:03] there's nothing better than a nice solid headed goal onto the back post and the keeper just
[00:25:08] dives to nothing turns out that those two players were named usl team of the week players
[00:25:15] in the moment that happened I was running up and down the street hood and holler and screaming
[00:25:20] with my charleston battery flag I cannot wait for this man to be player of the season
[00:25:27] and he's going to have a run in with nick because it's going to be tough to take that off of them right
[00:25:32] now but I can see what you're coming from on there yeah my ears with five and you have marcanic
[00:25:38] with seven so that's 12 goals right there and eight games yeah just between two of them
[00:25:44] I'm thinking they're going to hit 30 that's 12 out of 18 total which is a little insane for two
[00:25:52] guys to be making up this much of the first part of the season as well they're not even getting
[00:26:00] perfect form yet if you look at it some uh what do you call it statistical standpoint when you kind
[00:26:06] of improve us the season goes on you gel a little bit more and this is what is so exciting to me Pat
[00:26:12] is that the majority of these games are all on the road I'm fine with it right now like go play
[00:26:16] your road games go do your magic on the road get yourself informed for towards the middle to the end
[00:26:22] of the season when you're playing the majority of your games at home and produce nothing but pure
[00:26:28] magic to get us in that high seed for the playoffs because once we're in I don't see us losing at
[00:26:33] at Patriots point if we get to the fully sound way we are because he comes into I believe August
[00:26:40] August and September and those are the first few months where we have more home games
[00:26:44] than away for the first time Nick also made the bench of the usl team of weeks
[00:26:49] Chaka you want to go through any of these stats post game well I would but they look like there
[00:26:56] are normal stats from match to match to match they're really awesome but they look very similar
[00:27:01] this is the way we play you know we're ahead on everything possession passes past accuracy
[00:27:08] you name it except for files we're almost identical from match to match all right well let's
[00:27:15] let's do something different then do you got any like league leaders or something you can at least
[00:27:20] give us give the fans yeah there's a couple I think this guy named Aaron Malloy personally
[00:27:31] can pass this and interestingly Smith comes in second I know we have one or two more games
[00:27:38] in other teams but I don't think that's going to change much other is Nick tied with seven
[00:27:46] I like that I like that stat on Malloy because it almost
[00:27:52] can lead us into a discussion of I don't know if we just ignore it a little bit but
[00:27:59] do the battery play a little more ticky taco than we think
[00:28:04] because number one and number two and passing are from the battery and there's a big discrepancy
[00:28:10] in passes there's like 75 between them so going from first place to second place
[00:28:17] there's a big gap I mean are we just not paying attention because of the amount of goals flying
[00:28:23] in of how much we're actually distributing the ball around to each other that's a great point
[00:28:30] because if you look at the player stats Aaron Malloy leads the team with 555 and then it's
[00:28:40] three of our backs Graham Smith with 477 mark Segbers with 358 and Nate DeSanto's with 344
[00:28:50] so that ball is being passed around the back quite a bit well it's not also being passed out the back
[00:28:56] because you look at where those checkpoints are you have your outside backs who are constantly
[00:29:00] checking in with your wingers who are constantly checking in with your midfielders like Malloy
[00:29:04] but then Malloy is constantly distributing to Graham Smith to also bounce it around around
[00:29:09] that six or around that striker and then to move it around the midfield the battery do a great
[00:29:14] job fanning the ball out dropping the ball back and then switching the field of play we're constantly
[00:29:20] switching the field of play and we can do so successfully because we only take those one or
[00:29:25] two touches and we don't stay on top of the ball unless our wingers have it and we're going
[00:29:29] forward to try to create more space the moment we go backwards it's one or two touches and
[00:29:34] it's and it's all into the side of the field watch that more we notice how we do do that
[00:29:40] a lot Ryan I'll negate the fact you said do do oh yeah and raise you do you think we can go to a
[00:29:52] flyback system because of the amount of passions that are coming from our outside backs to almost
[00:29:59] create more of these channels up the wings we can easily play a five back system and I believe
[00:30:06] we went to a five back system two games ago just to keep just to keep Andy at bay
[00:30:12] and you could almost make the argument in the 90th minute against also we could went to a five back
[00:30:18] because we subbed in Josh Drack and Joshua Palmer as well for Marcanik and so but it is easy to
[00:30:25] slide into a five back system and then play Maloy right above them I think it's an easy system
[00:30:31] for us to play and it's going to be a nice tool to have that we could switch from a five in the
[00:30:37] back and then easily attack and go back to a 433 options for peer men right yeah it's an option
[00:30:43] for peer men and I think he's messing around with it a lot more now and I think once we get later in
[00:30:48] the season we are going to actually see it live in game him switch from five in the back to a 433
[00:30:57] in game will watch the players actually shift themselves he'll call it from the sidelines say
[00:31:01] now and they'll shift and they'll have a new formation mid game and that's gonna how we
[00:31:06] counter and score not something to look out for for everyone listening because it is interesting
[00:31:14] obviously the five subs in this game he made a lot of defensive subs taking offensive players off but I
[00:31:19] think he was toying with that a little bit which is like you said it's something to look out for a
[00:31:24] little further on that's two games in a row he's done it two games in a row he's done it now
[00:31:29] that's the end we're just seeing observation so he caused it we all he's he's our he's our number eight
[00:31:35] right yes this word is drag come in for a cause is he a traditional eight that drags a left back
[00:31:44] yeah so it's sliding right back they're taking out our number eight and
[00:31:48] and slide another back in there right so we also saw Paul more came in for
[00:31:55] marketing as well so it was kind of a defensive sell but maybe see some of these guys like we
[00:32:03] talked about previously let's see some of these guys play a little bit different roles and
[00:32:08] make them uncomfortable because it's going to be uncomfortable season and I think
[00:32:12] coach fearman is going to ask these guys to play a little bit different roles as the
[00:32:16] season goes on and be a little uncomfortable and I think that's really going to cross up the
[00:32:22] other teams and make them think like what is going on with us but as a player you that has to make you
[00:32:28] somewhat excited to know that you're on this type of team to where anybody on this team we've always
[00:32:36] mentioned it can be a starter but now you're also being asked to have the ability to have that
[00:32:41] adaptability to go and play other positions even if it's just for a few minutes well hey
[00:32:47] you're a defender go up top and go back you will go for your five minutes that you're up
[00:32:51] there to give our player a little rest or switch us out when we're in defense and stuff like that and
[00:32:56] allow the players to have that freedom to where they can play with it and create those bonds more
[00:33:02] and create that chemistry a little bit more even for the players not getting the full time players
[00:33:06] coming in at the last second stuff like that they're still building I love that point because
[00:33:12] as a defender there was nothing more I'm like I had to go to foot skills growing up all the
[00:33:17] time there's nothing more you want to show off then a little bit more skill than just running
[00:33:23] chasing the ball down and getting it back like I think these guys want to showcase a little more
[00:33:28] skill and I think coaches have seen it in training and he's like hey I'm going to give some of these
[00:33:33] guys the opportunity to actually go out improve it and then I'm just going to mess with every
[00:33:41] team we come up against and no one's going to be able to prepare for it it's interesting that
[00:33:48] we're having this discussion I have a friend that used to play in a couple European leagues
[00:33:52] and he said what made him have his career longer and he wasn't at the top levels but he was kind
[00:33:58] of mid-level teams his career lasted so long because he was so versatile because when he got
[00:34:05] to a team and you realize I'm a left back well they've already got a left back
[00:34:10] so either I sit on the bench and then all of a sudden an opportunity to be a right back or some
[00:34:14] other position on the field and he was so versatile he could fill those other spots in which made him
[00:34:20] much more valuable which he contends made his career a lot longer rather than just being pigeon
[00:34:27] holed into one position and that maybe that's the idea behind the shorter bench too it's
[00:34:32] reminiscent of another team that Patrick you and I enjoy and love and watching their progression
[00:34:39] and watching the batteries is kind of eerily similar very similar for sure and that goes for
[00:34:46] impact that doesn't just go for defenders soon that goes for all positions as Brad has seen on
[00:34:51] the field from myself like going as a goalkeeper you know I had to go through striker camps and
[00:34:57] defender camps and did I did every single position so I know not only how to do something like
[00:35:05] each I know exactly what each player should be doing how to do it and now my soccer IQ has
[00:35:11] expanded to where I can now put that on the field and I can almost be like the little puppet master
[00:35:16] and say this should happen if this happens and all this and so on goalkeepers have the mental
[00:35:21] capacity to literally play out an entire game if you have gone through the training and you
[00:35:27] know all the foot skills and every single thing it takes to do it now I've seen you on the
[00:35:32] field and I've seen cards issued to you for your foot skills and your I also saw you cheering for
[00:35:39] in a fantastic tackle and it was totally clean and all ball and it results in a red card but that's
[00:35:46] alright league rules we'll go with league rules seven of our goals come from right feet seven
[00:35:55] other goals come from left feet and three were headers I want to see a few more headers going
[00:35:59] but I'm loving it I'm loving how it's all that's all spread out I mean this is what we were seeing
[00:36:05] early on right we were almost concerned it was almost a header team and now we just haven't seen
[00:36:12] them for like the past three games and now we're back to getting a couple headers here and there
[00:36:18] it's nice when they're just sprinkled in but not like the only goals we're getting right and
[00:36:23] you also mentioned that too where we brought up where the first few games you know we weren't
[00:36:28] getting any goals from set pieces or anything like that and we talked about it the next few
[00:36:34] games we were getting all of our goals from set pieces like a four nothing one against New Mexico
[00:36:38] where like two or three of those goals were from set pieces and we continue that and now we're
[00:36:43] like are we even going to get any goals from open play how many goals are we actually going
[00:36:46] to get from the open field to play a good goals and so on and we started to get one or two
[00:36:51] a game and then now this is our first game where he had all four were from open play
[00:36:56] and so that totals up to seven different scores for the battery across these matches so I like
[00:37:03] that we're distributing out who's scoring also well we'll see a little more open play goals
[00:37:08] now that we have one David scoring from 50 so we're good should we expect that from
[00:37:16] them from every match I think it's a go to now yeah the posts you just roll the posts out and
[00:37:23] as soon as he receives it on a half line lookout it's going in I think he's going to try it again
[00:37:29] I don't think he should try it immediately like his next time he gets it at midfield but always
[00:37:34] give it a look and see if the keeper is even paying attention I think goalkeepers now his
[00:37:39] opponents are going to be a little bit more on the lookout for it if he gets it around the
[00:37:42] midfield line but if that keeper is not paying attention go for it I mean worst case
[00:37:49] this is something the opposition has to prepare for and keep their goalie glued back
[00:37:54] to let those long ball runs go through and actually give our MD Myers Nick Markinik a
[00:38:01] little space to run onto the ball because they're not going to be stepping up as much
[00:38:05] yeah that's that's the scary part your keeper can't be a sweeper for you and step all out
[00:38:10] of his goal box and just come out and make that simple clearance and put the ball back
[00:38:14] up the field or so on he has to play a little bit more further back because that ball
[00:38:18] could easily go in the net that's a great idea Doris we love Doris added another
[00:38:23] little depth of dangerous to our attack okay let's uh go to our man of the match picks
[00:38:31] Ryan I'll let you go first of course it's my boy MD Myers no are you kidding no way
[00:38:40] two goals again and a header oh you got to be kidding me no MD Myers all the way on this one
[00:38:47] including an assist I think he I think he rightfully deserved team of the week as well
[00:38:52] Maloy gets another amazing shout out another you know team of the week and Markinik has
[00:38:59] another great game I think this is a point where you can almost take a lot of these players from
[00:39:04] this team and give them man of the matches I think the battery have played so well
[00:39:08] where the more than half the team can get team can get man of the match awards and
[00:39:14] sad that we can only give it to one person MD Myers uh is this tough for me granite because
[00:39:22] there's two ways I can go right I can go I look at everything I look at who's my man of the match
[00:39:28] as in who is our glue and I really just want you to go first but I'll just go ahead and say
[00:39:34] it I'm gonna give it to Smith I really think he was the glue in this game I was a little harsh
[00:39:40] on him early on in the season and just seeing his play even the one play where he stepped
[00:39:46] up 20 yards obviously master ball of Markinik header on to create 20 yards of space that led
[00:39:53] to a goal from a center back position is insane you don't see that in any league
[00:40:00] any professional league they're called world class center backs and they're at 100 million
[00:40:07] dollar premium so this guy literally is playing the best right now and I hope it continues because
[00:40:16] he is creating chances and defending chances and there's not much more you can ask from a player
[00:40:21] on the field I'm going to go with one of our goal scores and that's one David Torres and
[00:40:31] I'm looking at some of his numbers and we compare him with Emilio Nicholas
[00:40:39] the passing accuracy in the opponent's half he was at 93% and he had very similar number passes so
[00:40:45] it's 31 33 and 28 for Torres so he has the same number passes as the other two players up playing
[00:40:52] similar positions but he's getting a past percentage accuracy in that opponent's half
[00:40:59] 93% that's to me that's an incredible number if you look at like Aaron Maloy he was at 77%
[00:41:08] so for me Mr. Torres thank you very much for the goal it is fantastic all of us down Edmond
[00:41:15] Zos at first there was a moment of shock and everything went dead silent and then it was just
[00:41:21] unbridled jubilation everybody jumped up and down well mostly me high fiving having just
[00:41:27] fantastic goal so let's look at the upcoming match on Saturday Vegas baby it's Vegas baby
[00:41:37] good luck coming to our home turf and getting anything yeah what happens in Charleston we're
[00:41:42] gonna tell everybody just not gonna just stay in Charleston does not stay in Charleston no
[00:41:47] absolutely not those five goals we score on you five one that goes public
[00:41:55] this is only one of three right we finally get a couple home games in a row
[00:42:00] something we can all get excited about we don't have to just go do a watch party at 10 o'clock
[00:42:05] or seven o'clock or six o'clock and actually go tailgate start the game at three o'clock
[00:42:11] they'll get it up yeah it would be a first two for the batter you know we've never beaten
[00:42:16] the los vegas lights on our home turf before kickoff is at 4 p.m at patriot's point of course
[00:42:23] canikrew is going to be kind of meeting up there in yellow lot if you want to come visit with us
[00:42:27] glad to talk to you we'll do a walkabout and go spend some time with the regiment down in
[00:42:32] the corner down there not in the corner blue lot and have some fun with them like always tell you
[00:42:37] it's a great group people if your first time it's the battery match do not hesitate they
[00:42:42] look intimidating but they're very friendly people they might even throw some food your way
[00:42:47] or drink or something like that so please go down there get the mix introduce yourselves
[00:42:53] one shout out i want to give out real quick is to bring back to this team new mexico united
[00:43:00] i said after we beat them week two that i was going to be a more supportive fan of theirs
[00:43:05] and they have won me over with their form they're playing lately they're four one-on-one
[00:43:10] and this week they're in prime time going against tampa bay rowdies who are also undefeated one of
[00:43:14] the three teams undefeated in the east so we know we're rooting for new mech if we're charles
[00:43:20] and battery fans we're rooting for new mexico united this weekend to beat tampa bay because
[00:43:25] that helps us defeat a opponent in the east but then it also holds a tiebreaker because
[00:43:30] we beat new mexico so if it later comes down with tamplin us head to head we would
[00:43:35] then hold the tiebreaker of them like that so but it's a mad it's a massive game right there for
[00:43:41] those boys right there that's all i got thanks y'all please please
[00:44:05] oh
