Tacos > Goals: Greenville Shuts Us Down

The Battery came out firing... just not on target. In this episode of Cannon Crue, Granite, Patrick, and Ryan break down Charlestonโ€™s 1-0 loss to USL League Oneโ€™s Greenville Triumph in the Jรคgermeister Cup. From dominant possession to fruitless finishing, the Crue unpack what went wrong, who didnโ€™t show up (cough Rubio), and why a taco truck mightโ€™ve been the real MVP.

The Crue also looks ahead to a crucial away match against Loudoun United, breaking down tactics, players to watch (Aboukoura alert!), and why the โ€œboot itโ€ philosophy might just be the strategy we need.

Speaker A

Welcome to Cannon Crew, a weekly podcast discussing the Charleston Battery.

Speaker A

Your host, Granite, will be joined by other defenders of the fleet from the Black and yellow supporters section.

Speaker A

And together, they will help fortify and conquer.

Speaker A

They are the Cannon Crew.

Speaker B

Welcome to the can of Crew podcast.

Speaker B

I'm Granite.

Speaker B

I am joined, as always, by Patrick.

Speaker C

What's going on?

Speaker C

How are you guys?

Speaker B

Good, man.

Speaker B

You?

Speaker B

I see something behind you.

Speaker B

You got the room ready?

Speaker C

Yeah, room's ready.

Speaker C

Just no baby in here yet.

Speaker C

So countdown is still on.

Speaker C

Well, we're past.

Speaker C

Past the countdown.

Speaker B

Well, we're counting on you to make sure you take care of business.

Speaker B

Don't be stealing other people's babies, though.

Speaker B

That's not cool.

Speaker B

Speaking of baby thieves.

Speaker B

Oh, nice.

Speaker B

Not Ryan, but Ryan, how are you?

Speaker A

I'm doing good.

Speaker A

How are you, Granite?

Speaker B

I'm doing all right.

Speaker B

So your baby is past the stage below and is into baby washing.

Speaker B

Stage.

Speaker B

Any advice?

Speaker A

Some long nights about it.

Speaker A

Get your sleep while you can now.

Speaker B

Yeah, I.

Speaker B

I gave you some advice the other night about baby washing, but maybe we shouldn't say that in here.

Speaker B

Getting me in trouble.

Speaker B

So we're here to talk about a little bit about the past match.

Speaker B

I don't want to say a whole lot about it.

Speaker B

I'll let you guys talk ad nauseam while I yawn.

Speaker B

Because that's exactly what the match was.

Speaker B

A loss to Greenville come down here.

Speaker B

I think kind of shows the.

Speaker B

The narrow margins that the leagues have between them.

Speaker C

Yeah, you could say that.

Speaker C

I mean, it wasn't our strongest squad.

Speaker C

Your.

Speaker C

Your boy Juan David wasn't even on the bench.

Speaker C

They use his doppelganger brother instead.

Speaker C

But yeah, I mean, the Battery did dominate.

Speaker C

We just.

Speaker C

I think we forgot the most important part, and that's getting the ball in the net.

Speaker B

You don't have to get all the way into the net.

Speaker B

Just past the goal line.

Speaker B

Right?

Speaker B

Just all the way across.

Speaker A

Well, I mean, technically, Cal did score.

Speaker A

There's just both sides.

Speaker B

Well, that means he didn't score.

Speaker B

Technically.

Speaker B

Technically, he was offside.

Speaker A

Well, big going back tonight.

Speaker C

I had a great view of that one as well.

Speaker C

Cause I was at the taco truck, and that is straight across the line where he was.

Speaker C

And I was like, yep, completely off.

Speaker B

That's fantastic.

Speaker B

So let's talk about tacos.

Speaker B

How was the taco truck?

Speaker C

Amazing as always.

Speaker C

I think we just went with some classic ones.

Speaker C

Couple.

Speaker C

Couple fish, couple pollo.

Speaker C

Some carne.

Speaker C

It was great.

Speaker C

That was the highlight of the match.

Speaker C

There you go.

Speaker C

That was match highlight right there.

Speaker B

Taco truck.

Speaker B

Well, the disappointing part is Christian went out there, didn't have a whole lot, and then one player let him down and got a goal.

Speaker B

He came out, made himself big.

Speaker B

It just went over his leg, under his arm.

Speaker B

But he shouldn't ever been put in that position.

Speaker B

It's gotta be frustrating for him.

Speaker A

You know, Christian had a good game, he had good distribution, he had good communication.

Speaker A

It was that one breakdown right before halftime and that, you know, everyone knows is the most vulnerable turn in a match is first 10 minutes in, last five minutes before halftime and then vice versa in the second half as well.

Speaker A

You know, that's two losses in a row in this Jaeger Metro cup, both to USL League one teams, both won zero games.

Speaker A

So, you know, Grant, go back to what you said does show the minimum error, but it also shows too in two years time why promotion and relegation would work so well in usl.

Speaker A

The whole, you know, between the three leagues.

Speaker A

I think it's very, this is a good stepping stone for USL and soccer in general.

Speaker A

But this match was just a heartbreaker.

Speaker B

I, it's not a heartbreaker.

Speaker B

I'm pissed.

Speaker A

It's a heartbreaker.

Speaker A

It was a heartbreaker for me because I wanted them to sport so badly and I mean, I felt like I didn't look at the numbers.

Speaker A

I didn't look at the numbers.

Speaker A

It felt like we had like 25 shots and just at one point we.

Speaker B

Had, we had three fours on the pitch.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

You know who we didn't have on the pitch?

Speaker A

One baby.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker B

I've said it in the past that he, he is the playmaker.

Speaker B

He is the one that, that makes things work.

Speaker B

They're the engine that gets, that gets in that middle third and putting shots in.

Speaker A

You know, I think, I think the game is totally different though.

Speaker A

Greenville doesn't make that center back sophistication at halftime.

Speaker B

I, I think it's totally different if, if, and I want to say it's going to sound bad, but if Sagbers was playing, because last Saturday night he wasn't, he was caught, he was caught several times standing and watching.

Speaker C

Well, if you, if you listen back to some of the highlights, apparently he was playing two minutes into the game.

Speaker C

I mean, it was Martinez who had the shot on goal, which literally should have had three or four goals in the first five, six minutes of the game.

Speaker C

But the announcer thought Segbers was on the field and taking a shot at goal.

Speaker C

So he was there in spirit for sure.

Speaker B

Okay, I'll go with that.

Speaker B

I, I, all I know is that he just when the, when the, the play up to the goal was just.

Speaker B

He was so far behind him and, and my boy Nate kind of drifted to the right a little bit because the attack was coming down that left hand side.

Speaker B

But they should never let that happen.

Speaker C

I mean it's kind of, it's difficult because they convert one of their only two chances in the game where we had 15 chances, like three or four wide open, like 1v1 scenarios at goal and we just could not place it into the back of the net.

Speaker C

So like this is a team that had the chances.

Speaker C

We can't really say we didn't have our strongest lineup.

Speaker C

Yeah, we were missing one or two starters from the lineup, but we still had everyone else out there.

Speaker C

We had our playmakers, we had guys creating, you mentioned it, we had three forwards on the pitch at one moment.

Speaker C

So there's no excuse for these guys being in the 18 yard box and not scoring a goal.

Speaker C

When you have 15 shots you have to convert minimum one of those.

Speaker C

And I mean it, it, it's a terrible thing to be sitting here talking about a lack of defense on one tiny play which led to a goal.

Speaker C

And our offense just couldn't even put anything together from all the chances they had.

Speaker B

And we've seen that before.

Speaker B

We've seen where we just can't seem to score a goal.

Speaker B

And MD got close second half, just put it over the top of the bar just a little bit.

Speaker B

But I don't know, we got shots.

Speaker B

It was just, we were not really that threatening.

Speaker C

So it led, I think, I think besides the first like six, seven minutes, then it started to settle in a little bit more.

Speaker C

But definitely once they got that goal it was just possession based from us and trying to break it down.

Speaker C

And kudos to Greenville.

Speaker C

They, they put in that low block which has worked against our team a few times this year and it shut us down and we couldn't break it down anymore.

Speaker C

So I mean the first half was open after their goal.

Speaker C

They completely sealed that game up with how they played and they definitely deserve credit for the second half on that.

Speaker B

Well, it led me on a search and I found two articles.

Speaker B

One is, was titled Booted a pragmatic alternative to buildup play.

Speaker B

Right.

Speaker B

And the other one is leaving goals on the pitch, evaluating decision making in soccer.

Speaker B

And the first one was talking about, hey, what's the chances xg, whatever you want to call it, of buildup play of scoring a goal.

Speaker B

And it kind of, and I haven't read the whole thing and studied it completely, but it was talking about maybe sometimes you just boot it, boot it out.

Speaker B

So out of your end, into the other end, put it out and then go for that 50, 50 ball from the throw in and you have a better chance of scoring sometimes than trying to build up out of the back and then up in a situation like we were where they're just, you know, there's park the bus.

Speaker B

The other one's talking about how we're leave not just any, just not battery, but teams leave some goals on the pitch because they're not taking shots from outside the 18 yard box.

Speaker B

And that I went, you know, that's where Juan David just fills that void, right, because he's taking shots from outside, he's not inside the box.

Speaker B

He's taking these rocket laser shots from outside and scoring goals.

Speaker B

And it doesn't have the.

Speaker B

Because we're so driven towards high XG shots which happen to be sitting right in front of the goal within six yards that we don't take the other ones.

Speaker B

That's kind of the premise of the one study.

Speaker B

So Juan David, I'll send it to him and so he can spread around the team.

Speaker C

His obviously his spot he wasn't in and Martinez was in for him.

Speaker C

Do you think Rodriguez would have made a bigger difference for Klein in that game?

Speaker C

And same with I guess also Rubio starting up top instead of just Cal in that MD combo that we've seen.

Speaker B

You know, I like Klein, I like him, I like the way he moves.

Speaker B

I like, I like his speed, I like his intensity.

Speaker B

So I don't want to say he wasn't adding to it.

Speaker B

Rubio, he's not doing anything for me.

Speaker B

How many games we see him in, he has done nothing for us and so I'm glad we have him.

Speaker B

But he's not.

Speaker B

If he can't produce against a team.

Speaker A

He'S going to be out the next weeks, right?

Speaker A

He's going to be out for the next two weeks.

Speaker A

He's got international call up, so we won't have him coming up actually for tomorrow.

Speaker A

I think he actually flew out today for international duties with Guatemala.

Speaker A

So we'll see somebody else there.

Speaker A

You know, who I'm starting to question, I haven't seen in a while.

Speaker A

Is he injured?

Speaker A

Jackson Conway.

Speaker C

Not injured.

Speaker C

He was on the bench.

Speaker C

So I just, I mean you have guys that you brought in, in Rubio especially.

Speaker C

So he's now getting his chance in this cup game.

Speaker C

So that makes sense.

Speaker C

But he didn't come off the field.

Speaker C

Like I just don't think he Was like you said and mentioned, I don't think he added anything to our team.

Speaker C

He really didn't create.

Speaker C

When we talk about a number nine or number ten and like a goal scorer, you want them to be a true number nine.

Speaker C

Pushing the ball, receiving it and pushing it and he kind of just kills that play down.

Speaker C

He slows it down a lot.

Speaker C

I just, I don't, I don't understand keeping him on the field.

Speaker C

Honestly, I think he should have come off and just completely put Cal up there and put MD behind and let the guys work because they've been playing so well together and creating chances that I don't know.

Speaker C

I think this is going to be a huge mission for the club.

Speaker C

I'm buying this guy and bringing him in because if he's not scoring by now, he's not going to start scoring.

Speaker C

There's no more clicking for a seasoned pro who is on international duty with his, with his team.

Speaker C

Like, if you're not scoring goals at club level, you're not going to get better just going away at international level.

Speaker A

You know, I think he's putting more emphasis on his international duties right now.

Speaker A

Just if you're just looking at it point blank, him getting all those 90 minutes the other day, staying on the field, you know, he's not going to be playing the next two, two to three games for us, so why not use him for the full 90?

Speaker A

But he also hasn't played a full 90.

Speaker A

I don't think he played a full 90 all season for us.

Speaker A

So him leading up to international duty, that was pretty important for him to be able to show that he can last a full 90.

Speaker A

So I, I think a lot of that kind of played into it.

Speaker A

But mentioning Jackson earlier, I think we see him come out against Loud and because we're looking for change now, now that we have a few options, I think Rubio.

Speaker A

Is Rubio the only one on international duty?

Speaker C

I believe so.

Speaker C

Okay, so, I mean, does, does he not remind you of the situation we had last year with Jake La Cava?

Speaker C

But Jake La Cava actually performed and kind of played the style we were looking for, whereas Rubio just.

Speaker C

He kind of looks like a lone wolf out there who it's not.

Speaker C

The guys aren't helping him out, but they're making the runs.

Speaker C

He's just not seeing them.

Speaker C

And he's holding on to the ball a little too much.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker A

And he's Sadie, though.

Speaker B

Well, I, I think he was a bad purchase.

Speaker B

I let the young people go out there and play because I I do not like that we are building him up to get 90 minutes of into his leg so he can go off to international play.

Speaker B

Doesn't do us any good.

Speaker A

Well, I mean now we're out of that competition, right?

Speaker A

So there's.

Speaker A

We have two games left, Miami and Tampa and you know, even if we win the two games that can just give us six points.

Speaker A

I'm pretty sure we got two undefeated teams in there already.

Speaker C

Granite is this is a pretty good eye opener of did we do the right business with Zeke Soto going to Greenville because Rubio essentially is brought in to become the starter along with Cal Jennings to push for a championship in the usl.

Speaker C

If that's not possible, is it a huge miss and should we have just kept Soto and just not went with the Rubio option because at least Zeke has a lot more talent to develop and maybe that progression will go that we've seen in past players.

Speaker B

No, I.

Speaker B

I'm 100% with you is that I like the youth, I like the development potential.

Speaker B

You're not going to develop Rubio.

Speaker B

It's just.

Speaker B

It's not going to happen because he's already past that point and you know, I don't know if he brings in a level of.

Speaker B

Of I've done a lot so follow what I do and I'm not going to necessarily finish my runs and everything like that and doesn't have that hunger there because maybe he thinks he's better than everyone else.

Speaker B

I took as he is an international player and played for a US national team, I do believe but hey, that doesn't get us trophies.

Speaker A

Say in my honest opinion, whoever went out and scouted Edwards at center back for us, we need to listen to him and hear his suggestions on any other late transfer ideas we're up for up front to partner with Cal and md I mean I'd be open for it because I mean Edwards has been absolutely outstanding since we've gotten him.

Speaker A

I.

Speaker A

I feel like it's definitely a different scout than who went after Rubio and I don't know the same hey, let's go.

Speaker B

Let's jump on the Edwards horse.

Speaker B

Fantastic deal right out.

Speaker B

He just stepped in and just his presence is just very calming and.

Speaker B

And just Joey is a little.

Speaker B

I don't say excitable.

Speaker B

He's got a little higher.

Speaker B

I don't say energy but higher energy little and so they work very well together.

Speaker A

Excited, he's happy and he's got someone there pushing him to that next level to be better to hit that drive of we are an absolute wrecking force in this back line.

Speaker A

And having when you get Leland back in there we can easily run a three back system with them.

Speaker A

Three.

Speaker B

Oh, let's back system.

Speaker B

I sent you all a link to what ours Vanger said about the.

Speaker B

The perfect formation.

Speaker B

So I don't know why you're going back to three bags.

Speaker B

Okay.

Speaker A

So anyway, anyway it adds option if we need to go forward because obviously we like to throw four forwards up front sometimes when you go or we can get.

Speaker B

But your premise that you can only do that with a three back system I think is incorrect.

Speaker B

I think you can get a bunch of forwards up there and you get a bunch of backs up there and have two at the back.

Speaker B

I've watched it week in, week out with several teams that Premier League.

Speaker B

You have two backs that are kind of holding down the fort.

Speaker B

Everybody else is pushing forward.

Speaker A

Yeah, I mean but you look at our back line and you have five guys essentially who could be those two.

Speaker B

No, no, I agree 100%.

Speaker A

Right.

Speaker A

Like that's what I'm saying.

Speaker A

So at least I'm throwing another one out there.

Speaker B

Well, we just, we.

Speaker B

I think we're missing opportunities on transitions sometimes because we're not pushing it.

Speaker B

We kind of hold up the hold up and let everybody get in that position and maybe that's may.

Speaker B

I think that's by instruction from Pyramid because that's the way he likes possession ball.

Speaker B

He likes that buildup and sometimes I think it slows down play and we're not.

Speaker A

Don't have that again.

Speaker A

Yes you do have Torres but Torres pulls the ball back towards.

Speaker A

Pulls the ball back and allows people to get up.

Speaker A

Yeah, but you don't have Mechanic don't have that taking the guy down the line all the time but cutting towards Goldfoot shot it.

Speaker B

Hey.

Speaker B

Which moves faster, dribbling the ball or passing it.

Speaker B

Torres can cut through two lines of play.

Speaker B

He can pull the ball back.

Speaker B

I know, I know.

Speaker B

He likes to get in the middle.

Speaker A

He likes to get his assists and he likes to score absolute bangers from midfield and beyond.

Speaker A

But what we're missing is that third level of attack penetration into the box which Forest provides when he's there, but when he's not there.

Speaker A

I mean we had Nick Markening and Barajas on either side.

Speaker A

They're just missing that compliment on the other side.

Speaker A

Yes, you have Kyle Jennings up top but teams are starting to get comfortable with him now.

Speaker A

We need to elevate him.

Speaker A

We need to push him to be better than what he's getting into right now and right now he's doing fantastic.

Speaker A

I mean he's got nine goal, 10 goals in 10 games in USL competition, in USL Championship League play.

Speaker A

It's just still, it's still fantastic.

Speaker A

And you can take them to an even higher record and possibly break Nick Mercadic's record.

Speaker C

I think just to touch on that, Ryan, I, I don't want to harp on it, but I think it's just watching this game, it is the player Rubio who kills that.

Speaker C

I think everyone else is creative enough around it and if you, because Cal Jennings played, but if Cal is your main guy and you have MD or even a casa behind him or Rodriguez, you're going to get different opportunities.

Speaker C

I think Martinez played amazing.

Speaker C

You still have Blackstock who can push up the field in those roles.

Speaker C

And I think he's creative enough and fast enough to warrant a team not letting him go 1v1 on their defenders.

Speaker C

So I just think this is a one off like scenario.

Speaker C

I don't think we're that dead in the water with Juan David, but I don't think Juan David's not going to play.

Speaker C

And then Rubio is going to start up top anymore.

Speaker C

I think that's now put to bed, put to rest and we're going to just put someone else in up top if we have to.

Speaker C

Maybe we'll go back to md starting up there with the cause behind him for these type of games.

Speaker A

I mean, give Jackson a shout.

Speaker A

I mean last year with his creativity.

Speaker A

I mean don't forget he's still the guy who scored against Elena United in the US Open Cup.

Speaker A

I mean this guy has provided for Charleston in big moments and he is creative and can poach inside the six yard box of what we need currently at the moment.

Speaker A

I was just very shocked he didn't get in last game.

Speaker B

Well, he, he hasn't played in a while and Rubio's been playing those minutes.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

But now with Rubio going out, hopefully Jackson and I hope he scores.

Speaker A

You know, got Loudon coming up this week.

Speaker A

You know what, that's my bold prediction.

Speaker A

Jackson, super sub coming off the bench.

Speaker B

So I would like.

Speaker B

So maybe this isn't the match for Jackson to start, but he needs.

Speaker A

No, this is match the super sub.

Speaker B

Yeah, well he needs to get, we need to find some mid table teams, lower level teams and let him get some minutes in there full time.

Speaker B

Get him 90 minutes in there so he can create.

Speaker B

Yeah, you know, he's.

Speaker B

I hear you, a super sub.

Speaker B

I'm thinking of super subs.

Speaker B

In my head, and they produce, you know, relatively often.

Speaker B

But I don't know if he's.

Speaker B

Yeah, you get.

Speaker B

You give him 20 minutes and expect him to do something wonderful, and it's hard to do that.

Speaker B

But I think he's still got skills and talents, and I think maybe if we give him some more minutes and so he can build up that confidence because, you know, he was starting behind a couple players and then all of a sudden this might be his chance.

Speaker B

And all of a sudden Rubio comes in and he start behind three players and he's not getting any minutes.

Speaker A

Now if he gets in, he's got to take his opportunity and his chance, and that's what I'm banking on.

Speaker B

I, I'd rather see him on the pitch than Rubio right now.

Speaker B

And that's not going to be a problem because he's off in international duty.

Speaker B

Not Jackson.

Speaker B

Jackson on domestic duty.

Speaker B

Okay.

Speaker B

Have we, have we whined about that match long enough?

Speaker C

Yeah, I think pretty much forward now.

Speaker A

We got this weekend.

Speaker B

I said, I got, I got one more thought and I can't remember what it was.

Speaker B

I know what it was.

Speaker B

So, so there was.

Speaker B

We're gonna talk about opposing team player.

Speaker B

So, Ryan, you and I got the opportunity to interview Toby Sims, and he played the whole second half.

Speaker B

And if we need another back, if anybody's listening, I think Toby's the man because he did about four or five different stops where we were almost in on goal and he shut it down.

Speaker B

And this guy's coming off long season and then he's stepping right here, second half, and not missing a beat.

Speaker B

As a matter of fact, somebody, before I left the stadium, we're talking about him and he says that man was.

Speaker B

As soon as he stepped out there, he was in charge of the back line and he's.

Speaker B

He's what, saved in that second half.

Speaker A

Absolutely agree with it.

Speaker A

I mean, when you have four tackles inside your own six yard box, keeping the ball out of the net, it's.

Speaker A

It's hard not to root for it in a way.

Speaker A

I mean, you got to keep me high.

Speaker A

Hushed at times too, because it was hard.

Speaker A

Not.

Speaker A

It's weird too, seeing someone that you've played with and shared those times with and then playing against the team that you love so much too.

Speaker A

It's definitely, definitely a hard thing to root for, but amazing to witness and, you know, hopefully he can be brought over to Charleston.

Speaker A

But again, I mean, we have six deep right now, and it's a hard, hard enough to figure out which ones Would be starting.

Speaker C

Yeah.

Speaker B

Okay.

Speaker C

It's a, it's very, very.

Speaker A

Don't forget Toby.

Speaker A

When Toby started the league with Pittsburgh, he was a left winger, so can't play anywhere.

Speaker C

Well, let's go from talking about the Battery at the bottom of a league to top of the league.

Speaker B

Who's top?

Speaker C

We are first in the league.

Speaker B

Okay.

Speaker A

We're first in the league.

Speaker A

In the entire league.

Speaker C

And it's a huge matchup.

Speaker A

Right.

Speaker C

I mean, we're going against number three.

Speaker B

Number three and up in Virginia.

Speaker C

Yeah.

Speaker C

Which is.

Speaker C

I, I think it's going to be tough.

Speaker C

I mean, Loudon are undefeated at home.

Speaker C

They haven't lost.

Speaker C

So this isn't looking good for our team.

Speaker C

Coming off a one nil loss to a league one squad and switching over to a very tough opponent where we have to be on our game and ready to bring it.

Speaker B

And they just come off a win.

Speaker B

Correct.

Speaker B

They beat whoever they were up a matchup against Jagermeister last Saturday.

Speaker C

Yeah.

Speaker C

And they have, I mean we have Kyle Jennings who has 11.

Speaker C

I think you had said 10, right.

Speaker C

He does have 11 in the league.

Speaker C

But third in the league is a guy named Obukhora from laden who has seven goals.

Speaker C

And he's scary.

Speaker C

He's 20 years old.

Speaker C

He's a monster.

Speaker C

He was drafted 10th in the MLS this past year and went down to Loudon and he's been tearing it up and he, he may be young player of the season.

Speaker C

Totally insane.

Speaker C

I mean he's, he's already have career highs and dual success.

Speaker C

Possession one in the final third, which is scary for a team like us who can get countered pretty easily.

Speaker C

Or these random 50, 50 balls where we see mistakes made.

Speaker C

That's usually how we end up going down in a game.

Speaker C

But yeah, he's won player of the month for March as well in the championship.

Speaker C

So if we have to focus on one player, I think it's Okora.

Speaker C

And if we shut him down, we have a good shot.

Speaker C

But both teams only have two clean sheets on the ear.

Speaker C

So that's another scary stat.

Speaker C

Looking at it going in.

Speaker A

Oh, I'm thinking it's going to be goals in this game.

Speaker A

I mean, you're having two guys early start racing for the golden boot.

Speaker A

Two teams struggling defensively to find their identities in the league and how we play getting adjusted still.

Speaker A

And the Battery essentially are still trying to figure out what we're doing in the back.

Speaker A

And yeah, you guys tell me each week why do I keep or not picking for the battery to hold a clean sheet and it's just simply of knowing the battery's identity and knowing at certain moments the breakdowns and we get caught so much in transition loud and are going to exploit that.

Speaker A

But I'm expecting high scoring.

Speaker A

Game three, two.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker C

I mean, both teams have top three in goal scorers and top three in assists.

Speaker C

So I'm right there with you.

Speaker C

I don't think it's going to be a defensive showdown.

Speaker C

As much as we talked about how great our defense is for the past like 20 minutes.

Speaker C

I think we're going to get scored on, they're going to get scored on, but it's just going to be whoever figures out how to put it in the net a few more times.

Speaker B

So I'm looking at kind of the team stats and one thing that stuck out to me is this is team leaders.

Speaker B

Torres chances created.

Speaker B

Torres leads our team with 24.

Speaker B

Their chances created, it says too tight at 14, which tells that there's two points of attack.

Speaker B

Right.

Speaker B

That there's two people that can feed the ball in and help create these chances.

Speaker B

That's a little scary.

Speaker C

Yeah.

Speaker C

The main guy is Valo.

Speaker C

He has five assists on the season, so he's tied with Torres for first right now in assistance.

Speaker C

So they do spread it around.

Speaker C

But like I said, their main guy is Abu Kora.

Speaker C

So if we shut the Egyptian down, he.

Speaker C

I mean that's probably their best shot.

Speaker C

You can look down that list and they're, they are far stacked down.

Speaker C

They're not in the top 15 with anyone else.

Speaker B

So are they a possession team like us or are they kind of transition team trying to strike back?

Speaker A

They're training.

Speaker C

Yeah, they're, they're not very high up on the passing, we'll say, I mean.

Speaker A

Like, they'll pass it around, they got possession, they'll bop it and everything.

Speaker A

But they're, they're a counter team.

Speaker A

They're on catch you on the transition and I feel like that's why they have it spread out so much because like again, on a corner kick, if you receive, if you are defending, you receive it.

Speaker A

You're just building it up the field to your big man up front and then he takes off with it one on one.

Speaker A

I mean, how many times have we already seen that this year highlight tape, USL posting about him taking the defender one on one off of corner kick that the other team took.

Speaker A

So that's a great way right there of, of seeing how they're able to spread it around and not feel threatened by that because it could be from anyone distributing that ball.

Speaker A

Just getting it up to them.

Speaker A

So we just have to make sure our corner kicks are properly taken and are threatening.

Speaker C

Yeah, I think another factor is going to be it's probably going to be very physical with loudon.

Speaker C

They're top 10 and yellow cards.

Speaker C

They have a guy who's top five who.

Speaker C

I mean it's 10 games into the season and he has four yellow cards.

Speaker C

It's quite impressive.

Speaker C

Right.

Speaker C

And our team, as much as we think we get a lot of reds and stuff like that, we're second to last in yellows for the season.

Speaker C

So I think they're going to bring the game to us a little more and I don't know.

Speaker C

I don't think we do well when a team challenges.

Speaker C

Challenges us hard like that and goes hard in on tackles.

Speaker C

I think we might get into a little game with complaining to the ref.

Speaker C

Yeah, I just.

Speaker C

I hope we don't do that.

Speaker C

We don't fall into that trap and I hope we play our game.

Speaker A

But I think that's a good shot too.

Speaker A

The referee's definitely going to play a factor in this game too.

Speaker A

And just hoping that the battery keep their heads and just listen and let the referee call the game and not worry about their position and allow Loudon to get frustrated with the calls because if Loud wants to be physical, don't let Loud and dictate the game.

Speaker A

Just play our way.

Speaker A

I think we'll be good.

Speaker A

But.

Speaker C

And they may have a familiar face.

Speaker C

So Abukora.

Speaker C

Correct.

Speaker C

This was not the one drafted by in the MLS.

Speaker C

It was Karamoko who we just played against in D.C.

Speaker C

united.

Speaker C

Well he's now on loan.

Speaker C

Just went on loan to Loudon.

Speaker C

So it's another really good player who we have have seen and lost to and he may add a little more and not much tape on him because he didn't get any playing time besides the game we played against him at D.C.

Speaker C

united.

Speaker C

So this is another fresh face who's a very good attacking threat that we have to look out for.

Speaker B

Well, I'm going to encourage Pyramid to go with this theory of this paper.

Speaker B

Boot it.

Speaker B

A pragmatic alternative to build up play.

Speaker A

Pretty.

Speaker B

Pretty crazy numbers that are talking about.

Speaker B

I'll share it later.

Speaker B

I'll link it in the notes.

Speaker B

I haven't done that before.

Speaker B

I'll link the study in the notes.

Speaker B

I like science.

Speaker C

You have two guys up top who would be great for that.

Speaker B

Well so now that you got me started.

Speaker B

So this is the little table.

Speaker B

They have probability of scoring in next 10 actions following a Throw in or pass out from the back.

Speaker B

So if you're passing out from the back, the probability of scoring is 0.8 or 1 8%.

Speaker B

The probability, probability of scoring if it's a throw in at the other in the attacking part is 0.34%.

Speaker B

So you have a higher percentage of scoring.

Speaker B

If you boot it down, it goes out and then you take the throw in than you do if you try to build out of the back.

Speaker B

Just saying.

Speaker C

Yeah, aesthetically, it looks like garbage.

Speaker C

Hot, hot garbage.

Speaker B

But you start.

Speaker B

See, I've noticed some teams do it.

Speaker B

When I started reading this, I was like, I.

Speaker B

I've seen a couple teams just not just boot it down and try to get on over the ball over top, but purposely boot it out of bounds from a goal kick or something like that down the field and then gets down to that 50, 50 throw in.

Speaker B

Well, maybe a little more than that.

Speaker C

But can you imagine just popping Landry up into the midfield role and being like, hey, you're just going to do wind sprints this match.

Speaker C

We're going to get you eventually.

Speaker B

Oh, okay.

Speaker B

What else we gotta talk about?

Speaker C

I want to hear your score prediction after all this has been said.

Speaker C

What are you thinking?

Speaker B

So I'm, I'm gonna, I'm gonna split it.

Speaker B

If Segburs plays, it's 2:1.

Speaker B

If he doesn't play, then it's 2: Nil.

Speaker C

Okay, Ryan.

Speaker C

Not, not the Ryan Martin from Loudon.

Speaker A

I'm going with three to two.

Speaker A

Jackson Conley, late winner, super sub coming in.

Speaker C

Yeah, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go 2:1 loss.

Speaker C

I think they're just gonna take it to us and we're gonna, we're gonna argue more with the ref than play our own game, and we're just not going to be physical enough.

Speaker C

So there's a reason they're undefeated at home.

Speaker B

Yeah, because they haven't played anybody.

Speaker B

I don't know who they play.

Speaker C

They really have.

Speaker C

I mean, it's like Hartford and teams like that that aren't that great.

Speaker C

I mean, they beat Rhode island, but so have we, so.

Speaker B

But we've scored more.

Speaker B

We've.

Speaker B

We've earned more points at home than they have.

Speaker B

Part of it's because we played one more extra match, but we were 15 points from home matches and they're 12.

Speaker B

So even though they're undefeated, they haven't played as many matches as we are.

Speaker B

And we have more points from home games.

Speaker C

I mean, we should, we should have been smart.

Speaker C

Since neither team has a draw on the record.

Speaker C

Someone should have picked a draw, right?

Speaker B

Next thing, my new jersey.

Speaker B

You see it?

Speaker A

Los Santos.

Speaker B

Yeah, that's fun.

Speaker B

And I got another one we'll talk about next week.

Speaker A

Oh, can you see my shirt?

Speaker A

This is the new Oklahoma City United team.

Speaker A

Npsl, Brother in law out to Oklahoma.

Speaker B

Do you have any batteries on?

Speaker B

Do you have any battery?

Speaker B

Is your under.

Speaker C

Now?

Speaker C

Are they playing in the soccer.

Speaker A

Huh?

Speaker C

Is this a team that would have a team in the soccer tournament?

Speaker A

That lovely competition right now?

Speaker A

Yeah, I would hope so.

Speaker C

It's a million dollars.

Speaker A

They didn't want me.

Speaker B

Let's see.

Speaker C

Million dollars up for grab.

Speaker C

Gotta get it.

Speaker B

Playing in Virginia, kick off with six o' clock, I think.

Speaker C

Six o' clock?

Speaker B

Yeah, yeah, six o' clock party.

Speaker B

And I, I, hopefully we're ready and go out there and get a win, come back.

Speaker B

Three points.

Speaker C

Would be nice.

Speaker C

I hope my prediction's completely incorrect and we win five, six.

Speaker A

No, we all hope that.

Speaker B

So did anybody just change the subjects when that storm was off the coast kind of going up, or did anybody feel like it was hurricane weather the other day?

Speaker A

Yes, 100%.

Speaker A

That's how it felt the entire time.

Speaker A

The rain, the, the wind, everything.

Speaker B

The heat, just nasty.

Speaker B

Hopefully that visits up there so.

Speaker B

So the Virginia boys can feel some heat.

Speaker B

What else you got, Patrick?

Speaker B

Is that it?

Speaker C

That's it.

Speaker C

Yeah.

Speaker C

I'm just on.

Speaker C

I'm on Countdown watch here, so hopefully I can watch some of this game and hopefully we get the win.

Speaker C

But if not, then good things are.

Speaker B

Happening to you and the misses.

Speaker B

Good luck.

Speaker B

You don't need it.

Speaker B

You got skills.

Speaker B

She's got talent.

Speaker B

You just awesome cheerleader, loud voice.

Speaker B

Oh, nice.

Speaker B

And Ryan, keep working on those washing duties.

Speaker A

Yes.

Speaker A

And also to anyone out there, don't forget to check out the TST tournament going on right now in Cary, North Carolina.

Speaker A

7v7.

Speaker A

It's great, great entertainment.

Speaker A

Soccer, playing for a million bucks.

Speaker A

Pat McAfee's team just one in the round of 32, so that's cool.

Speaker B

Very good.

Speaker C

And Sergio.

Speaker C

Sergio Aguero.

Speaker A

Someone got him off Laser by Sergio.

Speaker C

Yeah, someone got him off the streaming services and got him back on the pitch, so it's nice to see.

Speaker A

Well, he was in it and he was in it last year, too.

Speaker A

It's.

Speaker A

It's cool seeing him, his involvement with it.

Speaker A

I was surprised Ronaldinho didn't get a team involved with him being in Greenville now or having ownership in Greenville now.

Speaker B

He's living in Greenville.

Speaker B

We should go up there.

Speaker A

I don't.

Speaker C

He's just an investor.

Speaker C

He's not living.

Speaker A

I'm surprised with guero and stuff getting in.

Speaker A

Like, Suarez is having a team next year in it.

Speaker B

We don't allow biting, do we?

Speaker B

Oh, I guess we got spiders.

Speaker C

They allow a fair amount of shoving in this, so it may be allowed.

Speaker B

What's to keep the biters away?

Speaker B

They're practicing for next year.

Speaker B

Everyone, tape up your ears.

Speaker B

It's gonna look like a rugby match.

Speaker B

You know how they have their little.

Speaker C

Little.

Speaker C

Put on your pedder.

Speaker C

Check.

Speaker B

Helmets.

Speaker C

You better check it out there.

Speaker B

Okay, y' all.

Speaker B

That's all I got.

Speaker C

All right.

Speaker C

See you, boys.

Speaker A

See you later.

Speaker A

We are the fleet.

Speaker C

Your ship, we will sink.

Speaker A

But we, we are the battle race.
