I'm doing all right.

So how's your coaching adventures going?

It's going great.

Just getting ready to kick off another season.

Got my first team meeting this weekend and putting them right to work with a workout sheet for the summer.

Fantastic.

So make sure that they hydrate or die.

And they do a lot of push ups.

I think that's the secret to physical fitness.

Success.

Not far from retested.

So I saw you Sunday in our little victory thing over Southampton.

And it's getting close.

We're close.

Real close.

Two weeks.

It's God's plan.

Hey, you know the due date.

Just an estimate anyways.

It's just an estimate.

I mean, it's not even until they implement AI on figuring out due dates.

It's just.

It's just a guesstimate.

Well, I mean, or swag.

We'll call it swag.

My wife and I were in the hospital for almost a week before he came out.

For our one came out, she was 41 weeks.

Yeah, we are.

We are eight days away from expected due date.

So we're in the window.

Window?

Yeah.

Okay, so let's talk.

Stop talking about babies.

Let's talk about the Charleston Battery.

And they did pretty well this weekend.

We didn't get to attend it.

We tried to, but the flight got canceled.

So all three of us had to watch from our comfort of our living rooms.

And it was kind of a fun WhatsApp conversation going on the whole time.

But first, I want to talk about big things that happened.

Right.

Because we don't talk about this whole lot.

So pyramid.

You got team of the week, coach.

Right.

For seven consecutive leagues.

Victory.

You think it would happen before then, but.

Right.

You think these are.

These are victories.

These are wins.

These are W's.

Third in the green.

Not draws, but victories.

Cal, I think this is his fourth team of the week, right?

Yep.

Championship record with nine consecutive games with a goal contribution.

And this time.

This time he had a brace again.

And then my favorite Juan de Viator is second time as team of the week.

And if you look back, got me thinking, looking back, and MD's been on it a couple times and he wasn't this week but he provided an assist.

It's pretty cool that our players are like turning out these, these team of the weeks.

I don't know who the other people because other teams suck.

So I don't know why they don't fill it out with all 11 of our teammates.

But anyways.

So Patrick, what's your thoughts on the game?

Just generally.

Very scared to start and then very relaxed ish going forward once that third goal went in.

Relax a little more.

But that would be, that would be general thoughts.

You also forgot to mention we now have the lead leader for goals and tied for league leader and assist with Juan David.

Both of them.

So Cal's got league leader goals.

I think he's 11 to nine, right.

And then Juan Davies got five.

So he's leading the league and assist.

And we're gonna talk, I'm gonna talk a lot more about Juan David and enlist your guys thoughts about his incredible play.

I think he's the most unrarived player in the USL right now.

So first let's talk about their stadium.

It's something.

There's a train, it's a train to back.

I mean it's very, it's very Detroit.

It's like industrial.

We needed some smokestacks to just top it all off.

And some cars, some old, you know, Chrysler sitting in the background.

Patrick at one point come with the idea, hey let's get one of those houses.

We can buy them dirt cheap and turn it into a big pirate ship.

And so the next, every time we, we have to play up there we get to shoot cannons off the front of it and just have a big battery party on the pirate ship right outside the stadium.

Turns out I think it's high school, maybe old high school stadium or something like that.

Ryan, what's your general thoughts on the match?

I was, I was quite, I was actually quite surprised by the battery and the consistency that we're displaying out on the pitch.

I and I'm all for it.

I can't believe the work ethic, the attitude and the response by our players.

It's absolutely extraordinary and fantastic to have not only early in the season but after suffering those two losses in the first month and then to rebound and go seven straight.

I mean we started 0 and 2, right?

We did, yeah.

Started oh and 2 and 7 straight.

So think that we're just playing absolutely great soccer.

I think we had a win in between the losses.

Now I'm thinking about but just to have that consistency and display about trusting the process, trusting in who your coach is, who your other players are, and having the entire team involved or involved.

That 12th man for the Battery is truly alive this year.

That 12th man snuck up to Detroit and did a little there on their numbers.

So they were fifth.

Right.

In the standings.

And if you listen to announcers, and by the way, those announcers suck.

And if you guys, you know, announcers, if you can't like do your job to do something else because you guys really shrunk because the whole time they were just talking about the Battery the whole time, how great Detroit was.

And turns out that, you know, they score a goal early.

I think it was the reason why Coach Pierman was coach of the week or player or coach of the week on the team, because I think he planned that.

I think we said, we let, let Chapman, former player, put in a goal and then a couple minutes later we equalize.

So let's talk about the first.

Sure.

That was the plan.

Let's.

Let's let Chapman get that goal.

Just giving those Detroit people, just give those Detroit people the smiles and the grids and the smirks on their faces and then ripping it away from them and then beating them with it later on.

That's priceless.

That is priceless.

They beat us in the first two minutes of the game and they definitely beat our 12th man in smoke bombs.

I'll say that you're talking about the Chrysler factory and just getting the smokestacks.

I would hate to be in that stadium.

It's just everyone, they're zooming in on people and it's just face masks, scarves, trying to breathe.

It looked like Covid years out there.

Everyone's just coming.

That's because it's cold as up there.

It's cold as up there, you know, but.

But they did, they did flares going off in their face, but they had.

Their flares were color coordinated.

I thought that was pretty cool.

So.

So let's talk about the first goal.

So.

So what, Ryan, I want to ask you as a keeper.

Yeah.

When you're a keeper and a cross comes in or a corner comes in, what's the decision point?

To come out and punch it away or stay in in the box?

So here's the hard part.

It's that if the player is coming down the side and he hits the baseline or comes inside that six yard box to the baseline and he hits it across, it's almost a guarantee that the keeper has to play the ball and has to go for it.

Things that players have started to master, though, is that left, if they're coming on the left side, is using your left foot to do an outer curl so it goes towards the goal, but then curls outside of the six away from the keeper.

So then it's a free header.

That's called a fool's ball.

The reason that it's usually called that or keepers kind of name it that is because it tricks you into going for it, biting on it, and you're not going to get to it.

That that's similar to what's happening.

What happened here.

Other than that, though, I think the keeper definitely could have been able to punch it away and he misplaced.

He just mistimed his jump.

Boom.

So I watched it a couple times and you can see Nate.

Nate was lined up to head it away and Chapman come flying up behind him.

So Nate didn't even know he was coming up behind him.

Arturo was on.

On Jay's back, but it seemed like, I don't know.

I'm not a keeper.

I tried to watch it to see what.

What decision making is going on in keeper's head.

So I don't know if he just saw it and didn't see Chapman coming, going like, okay, we've got this covered.

I don't know.

You see, that's the.

As a keeper, the idea that you would want to have the ideal position you'd want to have your defenders in is having their backs kind of caddy cornered, so they're almost facing their own sideline with their chest open.

So that way they can have that peripheral vision to look over their shoulder and see.

And that since Nate was so squared off to where the ball was and his body was his focus on the ball, there was that miscommunication right off the bat.

In the first two minutes of, hey, Chapman's coming in behind you.

There was none of that communication.

All eyes were on the ball to start.

So I felt like that lack of urgency communication from the start, missing that and then conceding early just fired these boys up.

So we get.

We gave them false hope and then come back a couple minutes later.

Patrick, talk us through the goal that we scored.

It was awesome.

It was a great response.

This is a play that if you watch it back, the ball goes out of bounds and you can see maybe two players want to kind of take it slow, but Juan David is like, give me the ball, give me the ball.

Give me the ball.

Receives the ball quickly.

The defense is not set.

Makes a great ball through and we're in for a shot on goal, and it goes in.

So it's like that.

The urgency the boys are just playing with right after giving up that goal is what you want to see from your team.

And this time it works.

And I think that really boosted the boys to give them confidence to keep going and get a couple more.

Because one thing Detroit did that I was scared of was take a lot of shots and get a lot of open looks that they just flat out miss.

So, yeah, I don't know if we didn't get a goal that quickly, if it would be the same outcome, but that urgency definitely played a huge part.

So a lot of times we talk about scoring that first goal because it sets you up, makes the other team maybe come off their game plan a little bit.

And some.

Maybe that goal was too early for him, or maybe we're just that good.

We just.

Juan David was on fire.

He's always on fire.

But this was great exposition of him, you know, moving the ball around, being in the right place and seeing the field in front of him and just everybody being in the right place.

And it happened quickly.

Now, the rest of the first half, we were shit, but at that moment, that just put us back at level footing and just helped out so much.

I mean, yeah, you.

You also.

You're giving the guy with the hot hand, so to say, getting the ball at his feet and just.

I think he went near post on that and just beat the keeper, just flat out smashed it.

So, I mean, it was a tricky angle, but 1v1, the confidence is there.

That's why he's leading the league in goals.

And you also got to look at it like this, too.

We.

I kind of mentioned a little bit about this in the last season when we were going through it, but it makes sense, right, for Pierman at the beginning of the season to look at what points we dropped.

Right.

So if you look at both.

Both times we played Detroit last year, we lost two to zero.

We tied two to two.

So we lost five points against them.

We only gained one point this year.

Those games are like this Detroit game in Detroit had stars all around it circled in six different colors and highlighted through this.

Was that important?

And you could just see it on these players faces, that urgency, the urgent.

Like Pat, we both said the urgency was there, but it was consistent throughout the entire game that they wanted to just stomp on them after.

And especially after that goal.

Like, we wasted zero time making sure that they were not ahead.

Yeah, I mean, that goal by Cal really kind of set the tone.

But then the second goal that we see right before half by Cal again is just.

It's my goal this season.

I don't have to see another one.

This is what you're taught as a kid, how you play as a team, how you move the ball up a field and just pick apart any defense on the planet with that and it shows is beautiful.

I love that from you love that.

Well, showed the build up of the plate.

Even though I don't think we were the strongest in the first half, it showed that we were the tenacity and staying with it and you know, and putting the ball forward and still even though we were making some shit passes and everything else in the first half, it showed how well we keep going and how strong the team is because we just don't give up now.

Yeah, that's.

You don't see that in there.

That second goal showed how diverse we are as a team.

Like we don't just have to long ball it like most teams.

We don't have to just stick to wing play.

We don't have to slow build up.

We can play a quick Tiki Taco if we really need to.

If and move the ball fast and just open teams up.

I mean I don't know what you guys saw that goal but I.

That's my favorite.

That's up there with the Juan David.

Half field shot like so the amazing thing.

So Juan David cuts.

He gets up the halfline, right.

And.

And he cuts through several players with his passing and seems like midfielders that have that ability to really put some weight behind the ball and direct it through that midfield just set us up and MD got the assist on this one if I remember correctly.

And his one touch the Cal off that ball was just fantastic.

And then Cal just.

He took it and I was like, oh man, he's cutting down the angle and he just put it away.

I mean he just.

Fantastic shot.

Yeah.

Did he do the MD celebration on that one or was that the first one where you did finger gun?

Yeah, I think.

Was it the first one?

I can't remember which one it was.

I can't remember which one it was either.

I think it's the second.

The one.

The first one.

It was the one that V.

You know, Google's the goggle things so we'll have to figure out what.

Where that's coming from.

But yeah, so.

And it's fun to see that excitement in the players when you know, Count's been scoring goals a lot.

But still to See him so excited about scoring goals and everybody coming over to give a high five to all the players that are involved with it, I think is incredible.

It's a testament to the team how they're playing together.

And you can see, like, you watch videos back in his time at Tampa, and you see like, he's got teammates there.

It's just.

You want to.

You want to think it's not the same, but you can look at it and you can easily tell he's enjoying himself much, much more.

And it means more to him, where he's at and how he's playing right now compared to how he was at Tampa.

Tampa.

He wanted to be the legend, wanted to get everything through, but they just didn't have the support that team with him.

Now that he's left, he's now found that and knows how to be a part of it.

And it's like, I've been missing this my whole childhood, and he's like a new kid in the candy store.

Just so happy to be there, just so happy to be a part of everything.

Like, you're gonna give me a goal, I'll do your celebration.

Your celebration.

Your celebration.

You get an assist.

You get an assist.

You know, just.

He's just loving it.

It's so fun to watch.

That is fantastic.

That is absolutely a great way to look at it, because that's exactly what he's doing, right?

Would you help me out?

I want to get.

Do your celebration.

I'm going to give you your celebration.

And I love the synergy that's going on because they went up there, you know, the concrete pitch that maybe had had some crazy lines on it that I was complaining about the whole time, because I don't think it's laws of the game allow what kind of pitch they're playing on.

I don't think that white touch line that, that at one point, Nate went to do a throw in, and obviously he thought the kind of erased line was the throw in the touchline.

And then they backed him up.

And then if you look at the penalty spots, oh, my God, they're nice spots.

Those are penalty dashes.

I don't think they're.

I.

I don't see anywhere in the laws of the game that allows that, but maybe I'm wrong.

But anyways, for our players to go up there, because we often talk about turf versus grass and that transition for us, and it.

We were just on it in the second half.

We were just rocking and rolling at that point.

Yeah, I Mean, turf usually throws us off our game a hundred percent.

And like you said in our group chat, we were just going off of like, is this gonna be another game that we just can't figure it out on turf?

But that first goal, that quick response, kind of put that to bed.

And then we watched our.

I mean, the passes were still off, so we still watched a game where the passes.

I don't know, they.

If they seem like the turf's going to take it in a few yards in a different direction, but they're.

They were just either behind or like, way off.

So eventually they got together.

But, yeah, I.

I'll just say I'm never talking about defenders again on this podcast if it's just going to turn into goals in a minute and 30 seconds into the game against us.

No more hype, no more hyper.

I swear it was a plan.

Why do you.

It's like you guys always ask me, why do I always pick us to get scored on?

It's like, I just.

It's just a simple.

It's literally all.

It is a simple transition for me.

And the fact that you have to respect other teams because they wouldn't be at the same professional level that we are.

Right.

Or that that battery is okay.

That's just coming from a Wolves fan.

Always respecting everyone else.

And this wasn't their goal.

Wasn't a transition.

It was.

It was the set piece.

It was a set piece.

So it has nothing to do with your theory.

How many.

Oh, I want to throw out one thing.

How many trophies did Arsenal win this year?

Same as Wolves.

No, we got a Champions League trophy.

You don't respect women's sports there, Ryan, come on.

At least I'll be fair to this, though, Elise.

Arsenal is fair and loves their women's team because Wolves didn't even allow their women's team to be promoted into the top flight for women's team this year.

Like, for the women's prem this year.

Yeah.

They're like, we don't want to pay for you guys to get promoted or apply for you guys to be promoted.

I think we gotta wait for.

But we are going to move on to Brad's favorite segment of the night.

Was he talking about how the Wolves are when we meet them in Championship League group stage next Year that they're going to beat us.

He said Wolves are so poor they can't afford to have their women play.

Yeah, that.

No, we couldn't afford.

We didn't want to afford.

We couldn't afford and didn't want to pay for our women's team to be promoted.

Like, we didn't want to apply for it either.

Like, they won the League and everything, they're about to get promoted and we just didn't want to promote them.

Well, that's very sexist.

I think I'd pick another team pretty bad.

Root, did you mention Arsenal women won Champions League?

Yeah.

Yeah.

I don't know.

So let's.

Let's go back to something not as much fun, but really cool.

And so we're talking trash on our little WhatsApp group.

And then halftime came, and then there was talk about they got a really cool beer commercial.

Pastor, you point that out.

It was pretty cool that.

I think it was a Strohs commercial.

It was.

It was.

It had all the Detroit terrible beer.

But a great commercial.

Yeah.

Maybe the battery should learn from that.

I don't know.

I mean, it's cool.

It's cool to see little fan engagement.

Get them into a commercial that's just going to be shown during your matches on probably what they thought was their local tv, but obviously ESPN doesn't know how to figure out geography, so we get theirs.

But it was cool.

I mean, it's fun to see it.

You want to see your club do stuff with the fans, get them more involved.

And I think everyone in the Championship can learn from this.

I mean, it's.

It's just something that kind of builds your.

Build your fan base, build your interest level.

Everything.

Yeah.

I mean, it was.

It was absolutely beautiful.

And it's nothing short of what he's already shown that he is able to do with his abilities and his skill set.

We're going to be seeing this stuff all year long and it's only going to get better.

And it's like I've said, he finds himself.

He doesn't find himself.

He works himself into fantastic, fantastic positions where he is just in space.

He's the right place, right time.

He's been doing it all season.

I think it's only get better and better and better.

If not what, what teams will start doing is, is double teaming him and it's going to pull people off from.

Other players which makes no sense because then you have the golden boot runner up front.

You're going to double, double mark him.

You double mark those two guys alone.

I mean then you got MD free.

I mean you're going to have people free then taking shots from outside the box because we all know that USL loves taking shots from our flight.

Whoops.

Damn.

We sound about V Ray destination.

That's fantastic.

So anyways, while we wait on Ryan to return to quell his beast.

So second half was much better than the first half.

I think we controlled the ball and also Detroit's getting beat down at this point.

But we were more in control of the situation and possession was ours.

Even though if you look at the stats, possession throughout the game was, was pretty even compared to what we normally do.

But I think we did much better in the second half to controlling the game.

What do you think?

Yeah, I mean it's, it's not that it was completely shut down because they did have open opportunities where they just blatantly missed like what two back door wide open headers where they just thank God they weren't on their game as much as we were on ours.

But yeah, it's not a team that's that crazy.

Defensively if they did get a goal we were still going to go in control the ball up on their third and just get another chance.

Get another chance.

So I mean we worked them.

We definitely worked them.

I was surprised we didn't get another goal or two from how well our play was starting to build up.

But three, three is a good, good amount.

We had, we had four shots on target so we got, we, we converted three of the four and I don't what's the stat that Detroit hadn't lost at home since last August.

So we went up there and took care of that record for them.

I mean their announcers want to say how good they are.

I mean they're the only team with more than 3 kais in the season.

I mean, they literally have, what was it, five or six ties in the season.

There's five.

Yeah, yeah, five ties on the season.

I mean.

So now you're getting me fired up.

Got the announcers again because they're.

If you're gonna talk great things about a team.

This is fun.

I know.

All right.

And I'm trying to.

I'm trying to be good about Detroit because here's a couple things I wrote down about their stadium.

Right?

They did great use of containers at the end.

You notice the 40 foot containers that.

Like that, right?

That's something we've also have at Patriots point.

Okay.

That was it.

So the other thing that I was kind of bitching about, the damn camera angles.

I don't know what it is.

You can't see the touch line.

Well, you can see the fake, the false touch, not touchline, but you can't see the real touch line.

And they need to just lift the cameras up a little bit.

Now who.

Now whose camera work is better, Rhode island or Detroit?

The first Rhode island match, Detroit hands down.

But I think Rhode Island's got a little bit better this time.

It just.

It's just I.

And I know they're.

They're working with what they have, and.

And it's great to reuse stadiums and they're not building new ones that cost a lot of money, but just put some sandbags underneath it or something, I don't know, next to the field, something.

It's a good recommendation.

You want to pull out some more things about.

I was talking about.

No, zoom.

Stop zooming in on everything.

Oh, my goodness.

Mess up a lot.

Do they have a button it just says zoom?

And then all of a sudden it's in somebody's face.

Like, we got to zoom this.

What it seemed like right when the.

Ball'S still being played or like a dangerous attack and someone passes it and they're like, no, you already zoomed in.

We got to see that guy.

We got to see him.

Okay, Ryan, you work on the zoom thing.

So let's quickly talk about my favorite subject right now.

Can we see it?

So that's our next match on Saturday, and it is at home, and it's against Gville G.

Vegas.

The Triumph.

Greenville Triumph.

Yeah.

First.

First home game for us, too, in Jagermeister.

So we've already played one and we lost, unfortunately.

But what do you think?

You think we can easily win this one back at home?

Fans in front of it?

I think it's going to be a good match.

I would actually be.

I'm going to be surprised if, honestly, if Christian's not starting in, If CG is not starting in goal.

I think he has done right in training and done right in the field, being that positive extra keeper.

And I believe that he's should be earning his minutes.

And this is a game where he can show why he has made this move to the Battery, why the Battery went out and seeked him and brought him into this team in this culture.

And I think that he has everything, all the means to take us above into victory on Saturday.

And I.

If he is playing, I'm going with a shutout.

What?

Wait a second.

The shutout?

Really?

Okay.

Do you think we're going to have a strong lineup comparable to Detroit, seeing that we are currently sitting bottom of the group in sixth place?

Yes.

But since we're in bottom of the group, the only thing I see is switching out that some people may worry would be switching our keepers out.

Everything else would be full throttle.

Our best lineups going out because it's.

It's a must win.

And then you go local 1020 at halftime and then you can start selling some players.

I think that's exactly how it's going to be.

We're going to handle them in the first half and then we can do what we want to do in a second.

But this Greenville team though, they.

It's not like they are nobodies.

You know, they got some people on their team now who may or may not be just on the loan sent to the club to help them for certain tournaments like this.

You know, I really.

We Soto, didn't we?

Yeah, we gave them.

So we loaned soda to him to Greenville.

Now I'm not sure if Soto's allowed to play against us since we still technically own Soto.

Not sure if he's allowed to play, but if he is, that's another familiar face.

And then there's two to three other players who were in USL Championship either last season that we played against or two seasons ago.

Those players have come in back from overseas and they're ready to make a imprint and get themselves back into USL Championship again.

Okay, Patrick, what's your prediction?

Score protection?

I mean, I'd like to say 3 0, but we kind of have a toss up history with Greenville triumph.

So I will say one nil, we'll get one out and I'll say super sub JK gets one.

I would like to see Rodriguez bang one in.

I think he's been an incredible form and deserves to get one eventually.

With all the assistance I have him scoring this week.

I would love to see him score.

On Saturday I had him pick to score.

I have him pick to score, AAZA to score, MD to score and Torres to score.

I have Cal Jennings not possibly coming into the game for this one.

Arturo is on fire.

He.

He adds a different element, a different bit that, that Juan David on the other side.

It's like they're kind of the yin and yang thing.

And I think it works out so well.

So well apologize because last year I talked a lot of crap about him.

Beginning of the season, I talked a lot of crap about him.

I wanted him out.

I, I would, you know, if he left, I wouldn't have been mad or anything, but I just couldn't see it from him.

Right?

Everybody, every coach, everybody has different opinions about players, right?

So, like if a current youth player right now goes to a D1 coach, D1 coach could tell him how great of a player he is.

Yet he could go to a different school.

It'd be a D3 school.

And that coach tells him he's.

He's crap.

He doesn't want him.

It's just difference of opinions and stuff like that.

And when I was looking at Arturo last year, I just couldn't see it.

And then now in the last six, seven games, this run that we've had, I.

I truly see it now.

I see why we've kept him.

I see what type of player he has stepped into, stepped in to become this yin and yang role like Granite has said.

And he is on fire.

And he's absolutely making this extraordinary jump from where he was last year in my eyes.

And I think it was there.

He's.
